This place is a dying breed -- small, independent, full of quality stuff for people who are actually going to put it through hard use, and with employees that actually use it and know what the f* they're talking about. I try to make a few purchases here every year, even though the prices are often marginally higher. I feel good about buying here, knowing it's more likely that Mountain Supply will still be around the next time I actually need quality gear and advice. I came in for the first time last week looking for hiking shoes, and was pleasantly surprised by the excellent service I received! I find it very challenging to find shoes that fit well and had been to three shops without luck. I told the employee what I needed; the second pair he brought out were the best hiking shoes I have ever tried on. I have worn them on several hikes and they fit perfectly. The employee also had a wealth of knowledge in other areas of the store. My experience exceeded my expectations and I will certainly shop there in the future. read more

Spectacular service from August. I have rented skies from a number of places; nobody has ever taken such good and through care of providing my ski rental. He showed 100% concern for my boot fit, ski selection, pole fit and as he expressed most importantly the helmet! I've been skiing 50+ years and not often do I learn something but I did from August. Mountain Supply has a nice selection of outdoor clothing, ski apparel and gear. Trudy manages the shop and she is fantastic. I was there with a friend from Australia who would likely only use her ski wear once or twice, and Trudy went to extra trouble to help us find cheap ski goggles. The gear carried at Mountain Supply is top shelf, and their team is top notch. Having been to gear shops all over the west, and the big box gear stores locally, I feel like Bend has lucked out with our local gem. From a wide selection of all the gear you need for backcountry exploits, to helping you out with some information on how to get to that amazing bouldering location that everyone's been talking about, they've got you covered. When I look at the wall of climbing gear in my garage, or flip through photo sets of my climbing adventures, these guys have provided me with necessary rigging. Another good reason to frequent the shop is their community citizenship. Having coached the Sisters High School Climbing Club, I would send all of the kids in to get their gear here. They gave the kids a nice little discount, and treated them awesome. And when it came time for our club fundraiser, they generously donated gear for raffle prizes and signed up as an event sponsor. In addition, at all of the local climbing comps, they are always present and representing with gear giveaways and prizes. I think almost all of my climbing shirts, hats and chalk supply are exclusively raffle prizes from Mountain Supply. Whatever you spend here gets reinvested in Bend's outdoor community. I was in the market for some new climbing shoes. Being a new climber I was a little apprehensive about this decision but this place hooked me up. Wolf spent a ton of time going over everything with me and I tried on tons of shoes until I found ones that fit me. Store was stocked with lots of good stuff and had a good vibe. These guys are super knowledgeable and professional while still being very approachable. That's rare in the outdoor industry. Felt very comfortable and can't wait to go climb now! We went there one day to rent snowshoes and go to Meisner. We spent 30$ on 3 pairs of snowshoes. When we went to Meisner we found out there were more left feet then right so I had to snowshoe in two left feet and also another pair was completely broken. When we told them they did not care and charged us another day for being an hour late. 60$ for broken snowshoes for one day. Would NEVER recommend. read more

I came into Mountain supply desperately searching for a climbing wire for my ski bindings so I could finish a marathon volcano tour across the Cascades on time. It was late in the season so mountain supply happened to be out of stock of the item. Instead of turning me away, the ski mechanic called all of the other shops in the bend area. It turned out that nobody in bend could help me, but mtn supply still did not give up! The folks at mtn supply spent about half an hour trying to bend some stock wire into a climbing wire for me! Mtn supply customer service is AS GOOD AS IT GETS. If it were not for them there is no way that I would have finished my trip. read more

My husband and I came to Oregon to climb Mt. Hood and happened to make a pitstop in Bend. We were looking for crampons and boots for our trip and REI didn't have what we were looking for. We came across Mountain Supply and not only did we find the items we were searching for but the salesman was an absolute expert in mountaineering and was able to give us many tips about Mt. Hood. I stopped by here to check out their climbing shoe offering one day. After happening upon a shoe model and size that I thought my girlfriend would be interested in, I returned with her the next day to check them out. On that day, there were 2 salespeople and they were quite nice and very helpful. Despite loving the shoe's fit, she didn't walk out with them that day because she needed to think over the price tag ($175 MSRP!). On Saturday, 8/17 we returned in the early evening because she decided she had to have them even at the price. Unfortunately this time, the shopping experience was so substandard we walked out after a solid 5 plus minutes of being ignored. She had just finished a day of work and had cash in hand, ready to bite the $175 bullet. The previous day, we had found the shoe online for 10% off plus free shipping. Wanting to support the local business, I called the day before asking if the shop would do a price match within reason. I left my phone number and was told a manager would call me back. I was waiting for a simple yes or no and to be honest, my girlfriend would have purchased them regardless but I never got a call back. And this brings us to our experience on Saturday. We walked in and there was one gentleman working the store solo. He was with some customers at the register when we walked in but he did greet us with a simple "hello". After that, we sat on a bench if front of the shoes waiting patiently. Some minutes later a man with a camping stove walked in and he and the gentleman talked at the counter for a brief second and my understanding was that he was going to help him after the 1st customers had left. Meanwhile, we're sitting in front of the shoes, waiting. There was no acknowledgment of our presence or curiosity of our intentions...no eye contact at all after we had walked in. Meanwhile, the sale had been closed with customers before us yet he's just sitting there behind the counter and chatting with them. We decided we were over it and walked out knowing she could get them online for cheaper and without the rudeness. For nearly a decade, I once managed a small brick and mortar climbing shop. It's already an uphill battle to make it in the face of seemingly thousands of online sites that don't have the same demands of rent/mortgage, staffing, stocking etc. The small brick and mortar climbing shop's bread and butter has to be stellar customer service in order to make it. If you're working alone, a simple Gap greeting such as "hello, welcome" may not be enough if you are going to spend over 5 minutes making a sale and some minutes after the sale simply chatting. Rather, an acknowledgment such as "Hello, welcome..I'm working solo and I'm with these guys but if you need anything at the moment I'd be happy to help you", would go a long way. In this case, it would have been as simple as asking us that question and then grabbing the shoes from the back stock guaranteeing the store an extra $175 in the till before close. It's a necessity in the customer service game to multitask if you're working solo. Maybe the gentleman working that evening was new. Perhaps he wasn't trained well. Regardless, the local small gear shop lost a decent sized sale and along with it (and maybe more importantly) the respect and patronage of locals who would now rather spend money elsewhere. My girlfriend is now acquiring the shoes online after trying them on at Mountain Supply, It's a scenario we wanted to avoid altogether. However, after substandard customer service, our hand was forced...This kind of experience is the thing that sends the small brick and mortar shops to their demise. read more
