I have a few different feet issues and Bob was very knowledgeable, friendly and extremely patient with me. He also helped my husband with his hiking boot purchase. Can't say enough good things about Bob and our REI experience. I should also mention the other associates in the shoe department were all seemed very knowledgeable and pleasant. This is a cool store. It's in the "old mill District" of Bend, and when you see the building, you can see why they call it that. It's a great store, two stories, with lots of goods. Clothes, shoes, outdoor gear, hiking gear, freeze dried backpacking food, energy bars, if you are looking for something for the outdoors, you will find it here. I bought a bicycle sometime back at REI, and it did me very very well. I'm on a "road trip", so I didn't buy anything today. Prices are definitely on the higher end, but hey, you get what you pay for. If you are an REI member, you get offers, and discounts throughout the year, and a rebate in the form of a gift card based on the amount that you spend every year. Not a bad deal. Beware unmarked tariff price hikes when buying goods! The price you pay is NOT the price on the item. I recently purchased a new climbing harness at this location. The rack was a little disorganized and I found a harness I liked and checked the price on the box: $94. When I left the store, I noticed I paid $104 for the item! I returned to the store and did a price check and was told by the clerk this was a tariff price increase and they never bothered to update the sticker on the item. They claimed they had the correct price on the shelf, not the item. (Due to the disorganization of the shelf, it was hard to tell which item was which and I went with the price on the box.) Please consider updating signage to warn of tariff price hikes or something to better manage customer expectations and avoid wasting time. read more

Upon returning an item bought at REI Bend, I encountered an unpleasant associate. I purchased a sleeping bag for pick up at the store, when I went to return the item the female associate was not you typical REI employee, she was questioning my return. I had the item 2 days, it was too short , tags intact, in the box it came in, and stilll she asked me more than 3 times did I use the item? On another note she kept asking when did I pick it up, I had my wife pick it up and we had it 2 days. REI used to be so easy to go to and make purchases and returns, the associate couldn't navigate their new system and made me feel like I was doing something wrong. Do better REI. read more

Even if you're currently a shop assistant take some pride in what you do. I don't think I've been to this location before. It was a bit tricky to get to and it was New Year's Eve, so the store was a bit hectic. I was looking for some snow boots last minute because I had forgotten mine. There weren't many affordable ones there. I did manage to find one in clearance but in the end the fit isn't optimal. Normally a decent experience, but today I had an employee get uppity over the hiker box, of all things. For those of you not in the know, that's a spot where through hikers (think PCT) will often leave things to reduce weight as they hike, things that will be another hiker's gold, potentially. A lot of us plan a year in advance as well. Anyways, I asked to see as I was in store to get running shoes. As I was looking through, the gal decided to literally shut the one drawer nearly on my hand (there were two, I'd been looking less than five minutes). No discussion, just profiling. I'd literally set aside a small bag (like tent stakes come in), a shoelace, and an elastic band. Ridiculous, especially considering this is by hikers for hikers, and I'm not only a fellow hiker myself, but I was clearly ALSO making purchases. The name she gave me was Melissa (I wasn't about to get close enough to confirm via name tag). Filed a formal complaint, but putting this here to warn others, and validate anyone with a similar experience. Policing a hiker box is ridiculous no matter what (we want our discards to find use and homes!! That's the whole point, and most of this is not stuff that has value in the larger thrift circles, it's very hiker specific!! You'll know when you hike weeks on end and see the beauty in a busted out pair of shoes you can salvage a part from, but that wouldn't be resellable.) And again, the planning phase covers the off season. What a huge REI! They are 2 stories with lots of outdoor adventure clothes and supplies. Nice displays. They have a re-sale section of clearance goods. I will say the service was not great. Several workers were grouped talking to each other throughout the store. Only 1 person said hi to us and that was on our way out. Disappointing for REI's reputation as a Co-Op. great selection and good value. Plenty of parking. read more

I tried to buy new climbing shoes. The associate I found after about 10 minutes seemed very uninterested in helping. He refused to go look for more than one pair at a time. I was specific about 4 models I was considering, and asked him to look for my size. Nope, he has no idea what they have in that size. I picked two. He took a long time to come back and tell me that they only had a 42 in men's. Fine. He took a long time to bring that out but still hadn't looked for the other one. When he finally found it, he asked if I had been wearing that size. I had already told him what climbing I was doing, so yes you already know I wear the size I'm asking for. My feet are horrible to find shoes for and I'd have been there for hours waiting for him to check every single shoe one at a time. I have great luck with the REI stores in the LA area but this one absolutely blew it tonight. read more

What a great REI store! It's a two story building with a great selection of merchandise. But more importantly, the employees are very helpful and friendly. I bought two Oru folding kayaks there this week, and each time Marilee gladly helped me carry the kayak to my car. When one of them popped a seat grommet after my second outing, it was really easy to exchange it for another one. Ethan was efficient and gracious during the exchange, and he too helped me carry the kayak to the car. When I was waiting to exchange my kayak, I heard over one of the walkie-talkies that someone upstairs had asked a couple to leave because they refused to wear masks, and that they wanted to be sure that the workers downstairs kept an eye out and made sure they left. Sure enough, moments later I saw a maskless couple coming down the stairs. They left on their own. I was impressed that REI enforces its mask mandate, and it made me feel safer there. This is one weird REI store. I must declare driving up here from California was the best decision I made for some outdoor gear. They have a great selection of things that can be used for all seasons. Due to the fact that Oregon is a very rugged state, this store is a good fit for things needed to go cycling, mountain climbing, hiking as well as canoeing. Unlike the store near my flat in Cali, this store is two floors which means you can find a lot more than a regular store. They have a larger selection of bikes available. The employees that work at this store are very friendly and willing to help. If you are not from the area, I recommend you drop by. This place seems to grab the attention of a lot of travel magazines and tourist who want to take photos of the place. read more

Let me start by saying I don't mind paying premium prices for quality gear. My wife and J have been to this store 4 times in the last twelve months and have left without what we came to buy. Either it is out of stock, or the stock is for the extreme ends of the size spectrum. Not in just one brand but across multiple brands. I have been to many REI stores in my life and this one, although attractive, is a disappointment. The inventory management team here needs a shakeup! I have had to resort to Sportsman's Warehouse which gets you by but not the same high end gear. Since I drive 20 miles to visit this store, I probably won't return. probably my favorite REI store and I have been to quite a few. The inventory on hand is pretty normal and expected from an REI, the cost of goods relative as well. What makes this one stand out is their team and support of the community. These guys care about more than making a buck and it shows, which is pretty amazing being that they are in a tourist trap part of town and probably make a large percentage of their revenue off customers who will not be in very often at all. They support local, they support good causes that make an impact on the community at large and they are good people. You earn my repeat business easy, when I am back in town (I moved) I will be back in. read more

Terrible parking. By the time I got inside line was at least 30 min long on a Wednesday afternoon. Left immediately, waste of my time.

Very rude store manager. Tried to walk in with my dogs and before I could get through I was stopped by the store manager (Rick) who rudely said, "We don't allow dogs in the store, unless they are service dogs." Before I could say my dogs are in training to become service dogs he said, "They are obviously not service dogs" and said we had to leave then walked away. We have both a Rottweiler puppy and a Bulldog and it seemed due to their breed that he didn't care if they were service dogs or not. When I went back to talk to him he denied what he had originally said. I told him my dogs were training to be service dogs, but he didn't want to listen and said there were signs posted everywhere and I should have looked before I came back in. I have never been treated to poorly and I hope he doesn't reflect the views of REI as a business. I hope that not everyone is as biased as this manager was and I would hope that an REI district manager would educate this guy to be nicer to customers and not judge based on appearances. read more

We went to buy a stroller and found one already assembled next to a price tag. Upon checkout the cashier told us it was more expensive than we thought. Once we realized that we decided to return it to its location in the store. The cashier then proceeded to follow us as we returned it to its original location. As well as alert her colleges that we were coming to their department. She made us feel as though we were going to steal the stroller and made us extremely uncomfortable. I've visited a TON of REIs... and this one hits the "okay" mark. The service is quite good - probably a 4.5. The selection is pretty bad though. I was looking for an insulated stretch jacket (Outdoor Research, Arc'teryx, North Face, and Patagonia all have them) and the only one I could find was the Arc'teryx. And they had only three available in one color (thankfully they had a medium.) And it's that season. So it's not like I was in there in the middle of the summer looking for an insulated jacket. And this is just the most recent experience where they didn't have what I was looking for... it's certainly happened several times before. And while it's fine to order online and then return if it doesn't fit - it'd just be nice if I could try things on without having to buy them first. Plus, there's always the enjoyment of instant gratification. Ha. :) The parking is also a challenge if you go during the busier times. There's a large log behind the building - but even that can get filled up. Don't say I didn't warn you. :) But I suppose that if you're in Bend, you already know that it's at top capacity. read more

Earlier I whined about my experience at the Tualatin store. I don't know what happened but the planets aligned at REI in Bend. Gorgeous store in the Old Mill District filled with great stuff AND incredibly helpful staff. Lets face it, life is pretty damn good if you are a REI employee in Bend. Got my first pair of Keen sandals (been looking for the right style for about a year). Best of all, I forgot my dividend notice and the cashier looked me up in the system, applied my dividend, gave me the member's 20% discount and processed the sale in 30 seconds. Overall so happy to have this major store here at the Mill at Bend. The staff are courteous and ready to assist. They are required to limit store capacity due to COVID, and their employees did a fantastic job keeping the line moving and making sure everyone had space. The gentlemen running the shoe department were phenomenal! It was so busy, but they doggedly hunted down all the sizes I was looking for, trying to fit two little kids and myself with sandals. The store was out of everything in my size, but we scored a pair of kids sandals for only $12 (reg. about $45) and easily located another pair online. Made all the lines and out-of-stocks worth it. This is a review of the bike shop only. I brought in our Santa Cruz Superlight for a brake bleed + installation of new brake pads. A few days later I bring the bike home and remove the wheels to change tires. I then discover that both the front and back brake units are loose. I can move them side to side. What the bleep. Where is the quality control? If I hadn't taken the wheels off, I would have been out riding on brakes that were not properly attached. So I tighten down the brakes but that action throws the rear brake slightly out of alignment. I sent an email regarding my order to the store but never heard back. Typical. read more

Glad to see REI has come to Bend. I couldn't think of a better place for it. It's your standard store, just like all the others but a great location in the Old Mill District and right where you want to buy and use all your items. We had a gift card that was burning a hole in our pocket so we went in and got some must needed items. They were out of water purification kits. Tis, the season for that sort of thing I guess. I won a bet with the main man when I said they had bathrooms upstairs and he wasn't sure. So, keep that in mind folks as there are few public restrooms in this mall. read more

On May 26, 2022 I bought several new items and also a used item that was Keen Boots. The boots were my size and on the tag just said they were not waterproof anymore, which was fine with me as I did not need that. On the top of tag was two boxes that said non-conforming and damaged. Neither was marked and admittedly it was dark in area of store I grabbed them and trusting REI I thought they were fine. When I got them home I noticed they were ripped and had a hole in them. I thought that REI had made a mistake and gave them the benefit of the doubt they would not deceive me as they were marked undamaged on tag. I went back to store to return them and Sheryl the cashier accused me first thing of not buying them there. Then I said I absolutely did as I had receipt to prove it. Then she said it must have been along time ago as tag had Eli's name on it and he did not work there anymore. Im sure he left as REI has lost its integrity, and soul and the turnover is very, very high. Anyway, I showed her how to read a receipt and she clearly saw I bought them 4 days ago. She said she had to call a manage, and Kalen Medina came up and refused to take them back. Note, this is absolutely the first thing I have ever returned at REI in 25 years of giving them my business. So I called customer support and asked for a manager and the lady on the phone said she was one to help me. I told her the story and she put me on hold and called store. When she got back on, she said she could not take them back but would give me a $20 gift card. I said it's not about the money, it's about the fact REI did not disclose they were ripped and deceived me. I asked if I could have a case number for complaint and her employee number. She said I will only give you my first name Alexandra. I said how can I track complaint or have any accountability. She assured me she would do it or that I could put complaint in with store. I said, you mean with the manager I already talked with. Wow! She admitted she was not a manager and only seasonal employee but only option I had. Umm, if this company is not real anymore, why am I not just dealing with Amazon as they are cheaper and come to my house on time???? I told her to keep the $20 gift card and I would end my relationship with REI as they have lost their soul and all integrity and will take my business elsewhere or just order everything from Amazon from my house and actually pay less. read more

Just needed some bike cleats... I'm a little greener in what may be the best fit for me & was seeking something I could use during spin class but also dabble in clip-ins on mtn bike trails. I typically use flats since I don't race or are too aggressive past the mtn biking mt bachelor has to offer but see the benefit of both sides. Again just was seeking opinions for what's best in my abilities. Unfortunately Benjamin at REI made the assumption that being a woman I had no prior experience and instead of listening to my needs he spoke over me and made assumptions. Rei is in a class by itself when it comes to finding outdoor products. The amazing part is how knowledgable the staff is when it comes to their product offerings. When I ask about a product they may not be as familiar with they brought me to someone who knew more. Great to look for the dates of their special sales of returns. If you arrive early enough you can find great prices. The other aspect of REI is that they really stand behind the products they sell.
