Devil's Backbone, like a good story, doesn't try too hard--and that's exactly why it works…read more We wandered in for an early dinner, the kind of stop you tell yourself will be quick and sensible. But the beer had other ideas. As expected, it was excellent--cold, confident, and clearly in no mood to be rushed. Everything was clean and orderly. The burger arrived and did not disappoint. Honest, well-made, the sort of meal that reminds you why you ordered it in the first place. My wife's brisket sandwich, meanwhile, was everything brisket ought to be--tender, rich, and just indulgent enough to feel like a reward rather than a mistake. Fries came alongside, hot and crisp, doing their job without complaint or ceremony. And then, on the way out--as these things tend to happen--we stopped at the bar. That's where we met Vance. What followed was less a quick cocktail and more a conversation with drinks attached. The cocktails were excellent, but the company made them memorable. Vance makes a great adult beverage. All in all, Devil's Backbone isn't just a place to eat and drink. It's a place where a simple plan quietly turns into a better evening than you expected.

Devils Backbone has more business going on in the warmer weather. We visited at Christmas. The main…read morerestaurant and gift shop was open. There were outside fire pits. During the summer, there are BBQ areas and lots of out door seating. A large outside stage has bands and entertainment. There is a campground and RV area with shared shower houses. The camping area is year round. The gift shop has outdoor colors (forest green, browns) tops and sweatshirts. The long sleeved t-shirts are $29. The short sleeved tye died shirts were my favorite. The restaurant has the "resident" stuffed bear. At the entrance. We were expecting a 15 min wait but were seated earlier. The menu has a beer and beverage menu. The dining menu has burgers, fries and vegetarian items. We enjoyed hot chocolate. Our friends had sandwiches and fries. I enjoyed the vegan chili. It was delicious. Spiral noodles didn't work in the Mac and cheese. The place wasn't crowded. I bet that the grounds would be crowded with guests during the summer.

Kevin (yes, we're naming names!) was hands down one of the best servers--friendly, attentive, and full of great recommendations that had us ready to come back before we even left. Once we were seated, I was shocked that they didn't offer or ask if a high chair was needed for my 2 year old. I am used to most places asking when they see small children. I saw the high chairs and just grabbed one myself. The waitress did acknowledge us once we sat down and let us know she would be back shortly. No problem, gave us some extra time to finalize what we wanted. We had 2 kids, 2 adults in our party. I ordered the caramel latte with cold foam, mom ordered a coffee, kids got a lemonade and also a strawberry lemonade. The strawberry lemonade is really good. The latte I ordered itself was pretty good but the cold foam threw me off because it wasn't sweet, it tasted like pure heavy whipping cream thickened. I added Splenda to the top to make that taste like something. I wasn't sure if that was on purpose. For food we had Sticky Chicken which is fried chicken between French toast and it's supposed to have sriracha on the chicken and maple glaze on top, mom ordered steakhouse omelette and the kids did eggs & bacon; French toast and bacon. My mom didn't enjoy her food at all, the filling was not much and she said it tasted very bland. The scrambled eggs for one of the kids also wasn't enjoyable. I didn't try the eggs but can only go off of their word and barely eaten plates. The chicken in my meal was pretty good, the French toast is on thick slices of bread. It was overall okay. I also had grits and they're made mill grits style in case you're a fan or not of that texture of grits. We had to ask for silverware, as did the table next to us I noticed. The waitress was nice nasty in way. Where she tried to be nice with a hint of rudeness, but she could've been just having an off day. We asked for more splenda for my mom's coffee. She never bought it. I got up and grabbed some from another table because we figured she wasn't going to do it. When it was time to pay, she did go over the items first to confirm if everything was good to go, but her delivery and rushing of it was off putting. Like she walked up and didn't ask if we were ready for the check, she just said okay who's taking care of the bill or is it split or together with her card reader. I felt like I had to rush to go ahead and grab my wallet to pay and it was a little intimidating how she stared during the tipping part of it, which I was going to tip regardless of the lackluster service. Overall it seems like this could be a hit or miss place. I probably wouldn't go back but definitely think others should form their own opinions from their own experience

Everything came out hot and crispy, and both the fish and the shrimp had the lightest touch of batter so the seafood flavor really came through. We ordered extra sides (a steal at $3 each!) of mac and cheese and beans. You could make a meal out of the mac and cheese itself-it is a very generous portion of creamy, cheesy goodness! The standout for me of all the dishes was the baked beans. You have never had beans like this. Trust me. I rarely eat beans because they're often too sweet, but Papa's beans are only slightly sweet and laced with an amazing smokey flavor (they are cooked with smoked brisket). I'm excited to come back and try the collard greens! On top of all the fantastic food, Jamar, the owner and chef, came out to ask us about our meal, which was the highlight of our visit. You will not meet a nicer, more caring restaurant owner! He really cares about his customers and you can tell the food is made with heart. It is truly a family business, with Jamar's mom behind the counter and home cooked recipes on the menu. It is worth the wait to get food this good, so kick back with a beer at one of the tables outside while your food is being prepared with love! 5 stars for food, 10 stars for service. It's like going to someone's home for dinner. Pro Tip: You can't see Papa's from the road if you are on North Delphine. It is on the backside of the mini-market on the corner (you may see the picnic tables on the side-that's where Papa's is!).

My wife and I stopped in and got two chicken sandwiches. All and all these sandwiches alone demonstrated a keen eye for quality. The chicken was tender and the breading has a good flavor. I look forward to this restaurant opening its doors completely. If you are just traveling through the area or are a local. I except this place to become a hometown classic.
