We always search for interesting food stops when we travel. We were traveling from Lynchburg to Charlottesville and saw this recommended so we stopped! What a fun find. After placing your order at the walk-up window you then go inside to get your drink. The food was ready quickly and we were pleasantly surprised at how delicious everything was. We tried the white and dark meat, mashed potatoes and green beans along with the roll. The service was quick and the setting, a gas station, is great. Worst milkshake I've ever had, it tasted like plastic and soap. They buttered the outside of my BLT when they toasted the bread. There was one small slice of tomato and one piece of lettuce. The only good part was the amount of bacon-because really it was a bacon sandwich. This was my first time and my last. My friend and I visited Chicken Coop on a Sunday drive returning from Ruckersville, VA to our home in Winston-Salem, NC. It was an easy quick detour off of 29. The parking lot was really busy when we arrived. We parked closer to the car wash on the far right side of the lot and approached the exterior order window. I ordered a hot dog and a two piece chicken meal with two sides. I got two thighs with fried apples and mac and cheese. My friend ordered a hot dog with waffle fries and a side of green beans. But she had to purchase her drink seperately inside (?). We took a seat inside at the large high table and got our beverage from the mini Coke freestyle machine inside the convenience store. Our food was ready quickly. Everything was really good. The hot dogs were darn near great. Only things that would have made them perfect would have been a slightly thicker dog and a toasted bun. Chili and cole slaw were great. They use Moore's Original Hot Dogs from nearby Lynchburg, which I like a lot. Macaroni and cheese was super cheesy and well-seasoned. Fried apples were really good too and a GENEROUS serving. Chicken had a nice crispy skin that had great flavor. The roll was good with a nice spread of butter on it. All in all, a really fun stop. We've passed this little gas station/restaurant quite a few times taking our kids to college and the sign always boasts about the chicken. So I finally decided to try it. Inside was nice and clean, the staff was friendly and helpful with explaining what I should try, I went with the chicken tenders and I wasn't disappointed! They were really good! The chicken coop is amazing. If I live nearby, I'd eat there a few times a week. I wanted to order everything on the menu. Meatloaf was off the hook. I bit into my chicken egg, and cheese biscuit and it was like a party in my mouth. They were dancing around with doing the funky chicken, all covered in chicken, egg, and cheese with a soft delicious biscuit blowing my taste buds away. Sheila at the front counter was so sweet and nice. I will drive all the way from Troy Virginia just to get a little taste of what they got. Just put it in my mouth and I'll bring the party favors. Me and my dad go here for breakfast and sometimes I get their potato wedges and/or chicken. Delicious food, good service, and a nice ambience to sort of set the mood if you're dining in. Even though the place is called the Chicken Coop, everyone recommended some version of their hamburger. Unfortunately, we were out of time so we stuck with what was left of the pre made fried chicken. The chicken is really good and juicy. The Mac is so creamy with a hint of garlic powder. The bread or biscuit is a complete miss. It's not fancy, but you can eat inside at a large community table. At a glance, this is by far the best place for food in Lovingston. Can't believe we missed out on this wonderful hometown restaurant for all these years. New neighbors spoke about their great meals so we decided to check it out. Since then we've eaten there at least twice a week every time we're in town- breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We've had pancakes, omelet, eggs with bacon, Rachel (Reuben with turkey), cheesesteak, chicken pot pie, meatloaf, prime rib, and fish and chips. Food was good, the fried chicken breast was really juicy and cooked well. The waffle fries came in a large serving and were good when fresh and hot. The bag they are served in should be dumped out on a plate or something or it will make the fries get soft and loose the crispness quickly. It is in the back corner of a gas station store. They have a couple of tables where you can sit and eat. You get drinks from the store and any chips if you desire. The chicken is Pretty decent here (moist, unlike Shady's) but there are other issues. The string beans are inedible. Stringiest low quality beans ever. The 'string' inside the beans isn't edible and I just gave up. Not sure how the ladies in back haven't tried them and refused to serve to the public. OK, California guy visiting Virginia for the first time. Checked yelp ratings and this looked worth a try. First off I love fried chicken. I have eaten it all over the country. Was a little surprised when I pulled up to see this restaurant attached to a gas station. I mean are we in Mayberry or what. Went inside and was surprised to see the cleanliness of the facility. A big plus+++ Ordered the 8 piece chicken only to go. "Thelma, we need an 8 piece for the nice gentleman" was the call to the back. Was served literally in less than 2 minutes. Chicken was HOT and the coating was cooked to the darker side of the scale, which I prefer. Bagged it up for me with napkins and hot sauce (lots of each, don't you hate when people are stingy with these). Headed out. Had to eat a piece in the car. Chicken was hot, crunchy and perfectly seasoned for my taste (you might call it slightly salty). But I like it that way. Cooked perfect all the wAy to the bone. Hot sauce reminded me of franks. Working in Nelson County for a few hours and my husband says; let's grab a burger...I know the best spot, you'll love it! Anticipation grew and I thought, heck yeah - let's nosh on a burger I could use a break, sitting down, being served etc. Imagine my face when he pulled into the gas station/convenience store parking lot, with a vintage looking sign that says "The Chicken Coop" right beside gas prices. Look, I love a good dive bar, so I was all in though, not too sure I'd be ordering a burger from this joint. At once, looking at the menu and seeing some of the ready made items they had for the lunch crowd, I thought, I'm def getting the burger. And I'm SO glad I did! Hands down, one of the best burgers I've ever, ever had. No exaggeration. The fact they also offer 3 various types of french fries was a huge win for me too. I ordered the regular cheeseburger - with simple ketchup/mustard and seasoned fries. It wasn't greasy. It was cooked to perfection and super juicy! Know going in that the regular burger is a 1/2 pound. And know that you are going to wait, they cook burgers to order. The fries were seasoned properly with a fresh potato taste. Very angry and disappointed . I've been getting fried chicken from here for about 10 years . I just got a two thigh meal today. It was $16.86. That's insane, I used to get kind of upset when it was $12.. I know for a fact chicken is the cheapest meat. Its not inflation its price gauging . I mean I can make all it takes to make this food , but it's a matter of convenience. You can't tell me that they are not making money hand over fist. The place is always busy. Plus the food is good. This is very tasty fried chicken, and this is coming from someone who isn't really a fan of eating fried chicken. Every once in a great while I get a craving for it, & this is where we go. The batter is light & tasty, the meat is tender & they just really do a great job. I ordered their 2-piece chicken dinner for Take-Out, & they asked me which pieces I preferred, which is always nice. They include a roll in the container, separating it from the other food so it doesn't get soggy. Nice touch. Utensils are also placed in the container, in a cellophane baggie. I chose mac & cheese & their wedge fries as my sides, but I'm not a big fan of big fries. Hard to get those to cook all the way through, so they tend to be either mealy & under-done or burnt, which is why I'd like to see a different type of french fry used; but that is my own personal preference. I have returned a couple times & the food was great each time. I tried their fish & chips, but that was a little too fishy for me, so I'll stick to the chicken. I will probably try it again one day, depending on the fish they have on offer. Other people have already described that this is a little hole-in-the-wall establishment in a convenience store/gas station. I was afraid it would not be big on cleanliness, but they put together a nicely done, neat take-out packaging, so I no longer feel squeamish, lol. I will add a picture of their outdoor-placed menu marquee, but you may want to double-check for any new changes in items or prices, as time goes by. Changes I'd like to see: I'd love to try a terrific chicken salad on a hoagie-type sub roll, instead of plain bread. I also hope they'll add hush puppies to the menu, which would be a great additional side with the fish & chips & the chicken. read more

The chicken was super moist, not the best we ever had but surely some of the most moist. If you're comparing it to KFC this is a hands down winner but if you compare it to a mom and pops home style crunchy crust and moist chicken dinner, no. For fast food chicken it is a winner. read more
