A fun casual place for lunch. Our group ordered the party melt, the grilled cheese, the single cheeseburger and Carolina burger. We also ordered the fried pickles and cheese curds as well as some beers and ciders. It was a good place for us to meet up and catch up. The service was fast and very friendly. The seating is limited. They have outdoor seating but it was raining the day we went. Everyone liked their burgers although one person said it was a bit small. The cheese curds and pickles were over breaded and overfried. The grilled cheese had hardly any cheese on it but the cook did accommodate my request to add tomato which was appreciated. If you are vegetarian or don't appreciate beer, your visits may be few and far between. This is where the locals go for great beer, service and food. Don't come during karaoke though. It is packed and standing room only. You just got to do this place. I have to say that I did have high hopes that this would have been a better experience. I assume that I went at the wrong time of day (lunch) as I have never had to wait so long for a simple burger. I guess you can look at it two ways. The burgers are cooked in order, they simply did not seem to have more than one order on the grill! Hey Stadium Inn !!who is owned by the same as this place, why the heck can't you make burgers that taste like this.. the bun hold's together, the burger does not taste like old grease like the drill does not get cleaned during the day.. the fries are yummy cause you can tell the fryer has fresh grease... the best burger around.. and the hot dogs are yummy and actually grilled not dropped in the fryer... yes the stadium says they don't do that, but we have witnessed this 3 times, so we don't get dogs there anymore .. not lie.. maybe you should let this girl running this place run it there.. just saying .. excellent. I really wanted to try The Bonfire Burgers and Grill today, but unfortunately they were closed. Instead, we opted for the Filling Station, which is exactly that - a gas station/restaurant. It was very dimly lit and very small. There were about three low tables, several counter seats and a couple high tables. We tried one of the "Specials". I had the Philly Cheesesteak and my friend ordered the Chicken Philly Cheesesteak. Each came with a side and we chose the chips. There are no soda fountain drinks, only bottled beverages from a cooler. My special and bottled soda came to just under $20. The meal tasted just okay, and I would not buy again....too expensive for a sandwich, chips and soda. read more

A lovable little gem of a beer & burger place, and with a sense of humor yet -- its website is "GrowlersGrubAndGas" and it provides info on both its food and the gas at its pumps. It doesn't have a big menu or wine list, but they make an EXCELLENT cheeseburger and they have terrific selection of beers in bottle and on tap. Also good for hot dogs, nachos, etc. Live music some evenings, cramped but fun. Staff generally very friendly -- last time I was there I was addressed as "Hon", later as "Darlin'", and finally as "Sweetheart", thus hitting the trifecta. read more

I hate to post a great rating because I want to be able to get in the place instead of fighting a crowd but this place is enjoyable. I had an Octane Burger which is their version of the Western. The Octane is on Texas Toast where a Western is just a hamburger bun. The Octane was great and not too expensive at $10.99. My wife had a single burger at $7.99 and she enjoyed that. We also had onion rings, which were good, and seasoned fries. They have a HUGE selection of tap and bottled beers. The only negative is that it's a small place. Heck, it's a gas station, too. So stay away so I don't have any problems finding a seat. read more

The Filling Station is a hidden gem located right off U.S. Route 29 in Amherst, VA. It's a renovated gas station/convenience store that still sells gas, sodas, chips, candy, etc.; but also has a small dining area and kitchen complete with a flat top and deep fryers. Plus, they have a robust beer selection, with a few on tap and a walk-in full of singles and beer to go. We've stopped a couple of times and both times I've enjoyed a cheeseburger and Onion rings. read more

Wendy did some Yelp magic and found The Filling Station in Amherst. An old Esso station that is now a great lunch spot with an even better beer list. Normal lunch fair of burgers and sandwiches. Everything in the place looked good. I had a great Collective Arts IPA from Ontario. I will now change my tune. There IS a great place between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. What a hidden gem on a road trip to pick up an eBay win. Awesome selection of beer and cider on tap that we wish we had time to sample. I grew up in Amherst and remember the old days of the filling station. I now look forward to,stopping there for a cheeseburger that tastes like the old days. We picked The Filling Station for a quick meal because it had all 5-Star reviews on Yelp. We were not disappointed at all and enjoyed every minute of our stop. The staff was oh so friendly and the food was as advertised - perfectly delicious. I do have to say that their fried dill pickles are probably going to be a bit of a craving issue for me. Without deliberately knowing it was there, you'd just think it was another gas station - but we were happily surprised with the space inside and the menu selection. Also, they have about a dozen local craft brews on tap, as well as the rest of the things you'd typically find in a regular gas station convenience store.
