I noticed the window sign said "Angie's Clayton Cafe" and whilst being seated at 11:45AM on Tuesday June 2, 2026, noted the wall art had changed, no more local memorabilia, and the menu is now a well worn, two sheet pieces of copy paper. No problem, the place was nearing capacity per usual and we did get a window seated table. But, then I noticed, no collard greens on the menu. So, if you read my earlier reviews, you will note that I have eaten at quite a few "meat and three" style country diners and that I also know how to cook this food at home. That's a big qualifier, because Clayton Cafe had become a part of our destination trip to Clayton from Greenville, SC. It was just that good, a notch above the crowd. I didn't find this experience to be the same. The decor, service, ambiance was the same. Even the same crowd starting a 15 minute table wait shortly after noon. Business has not suffered, but the food is not the same. Overall, everything was less flavorful, more bland. The highlight, the white sawmill gravy was piping hot and flowed well, not a gloopy mess and I like that it was served on the side. The country fried steak was tender, but it had less crunch on the crust and was significantly bland - pepper and salt please. The green beans had a small chunk of meat involved, but they too were very bland and lacked a depth of flavor expected from the hamhock, the biscuit was good, but not the buttery crusty biscuit if yore. The okra was straight up flour breading with no cornmeal in the mixture and that's a game changer on this dish. Fried chicken was good. Squash, or squash casserole was a bland mess and left uneaten. Don't get me wrong. This three star rating means "OK". It's still a good meat and three. It's just not an exceptional meat and three as experiences my multiple prior visits. So that's when I asked the server if the restaurant had changed owners and yes, in April 2026. Well, there ya go, but Bon Chance to the new owners and Godspeed towards the hard work and keeping it going. Obviously, a full house lunch crowd on a Tuesday in June shows positive momentum. I'm just saying, pay attention to flavor, both in depth and complexity, to make these Southern standards stand out from the meat and three crowd.

He offered his apology, a refund, and an appreciation for the feedback. It goes a long way when a person takes responsibility, especially business owners. Based on his explanations to me, which fit my experience, they were understaffed by 1 person, and also had double the traffic that they do on a usual Tuesday. I don't know if I'll ever be around this area enough to give them another shot, but I do appreciate reaching a real human, especially in this day and age. We were informed that they will continue to serve brunch. We stumbled upon this place as were visiting Tiger, GA. We went to the wine tasting at Tiger Mountain Vineyards and were told about the Red Barn Cafe during the tasting. They told us that the place is usually crowded so we needed to walk over and see if there was any availability for the evening. We followed the orders and upon walking in, ran into the chef. He greeted us and said that yes, there was availability. I asked what they had on the menu and he replied, "I'm not 100% sure yet, I haven't finished making it." He then proceeded to tell us that he would definitely have steak and fish, but he was not sure what else. I loved hear this as it meant everything was going to be fresh! We came back that evening and walked into the dining area where we were greeted by the 1 waiter that was working. We were the only people in the place. The dining area has a cozy, at home feeling to it, with flowers and lit candles on each table. There is no air conditioning but there are heating lamps around the tables and the waiter provided my wife and I a blanket if we needed it. The waiter was awesome and wish I would have gotten his name. Very personable and provided great service all evening. I got the NY Strip with a baked potato and some sort of greens. It was fresh, came out fast and absolutely delicious! My wife ordered the grouper (we did not know it was fried). It was excellent! I will definitely be back for brunch. All in all, the Red Barn Cafe provides a great atmosphere, excellent service, and superb food. Looking forward to coming back soon.

The patio is about half full and the dining room inside was less than a third full we were seated quickly. It took 10 minutes for somebody to come by with the menu another 10 minutes to get our water and coffee, and our food, which was an omelette and a breakfast bowl, took another 45 minutes, which as I read on yelp was the chief complaint. My wife's breakfast bowl was very good, but my omelette was definitely overcooked. The waitress literally stopped by our table for the first time at the 45 minute mark, other than that, we sat there for what felt like an eternity. We asked twice about the food. One time got no answer. The other time got "We are short staffed today." This seems to be a running theme with this place, if you read on Yelp, probably 2/3 of the reviews are very positive about the food which my wife's food was very good, and the other third is about the absolutely horrible wait times and the general unfriendliness/indifference of the weight staff specifically the only female who acts as a waitress. There are two other gentlemen who see you and get you, water, menus, etc., and help where they can, but I was so beyond frustrated with the amount of time it took to get our food on what should've been a relaxing Sunday that the wait time completely killed the whole experience. I will say that the waitress got really really interested in service right around the time it came to pay. To the ownership I'll say this much, while the food was overall pretty good, you can't make people wait for an hour and a half for an omelette and a breakfast bowl especially while your restaurant is not even half-full. I think if you figure this out the place will be a success.
