Our family had a 10 out of 10 star experience learning how to fly fish with Pete Reynolds with Mountain Angler. Pete really made this a positive and fun half day walk and wade trip. Our group booked two guides - Mark and Luke. They were excellent and we had so much fun fishing Antero. My husband and I were in Luke's boat. He was very knowledgeable and worked very hard to help us land lots of trout. I had never been fly fishing or fishing at all, and I was skeptical that a guide would make that much difference. I landed 5 trout and my husband landed 7 trout. All of the boats hovering around us (without a guide) were not catching anything. I am a believer now that an experienced guide makes all the difference. They knew the right locations, depth, and lures to use throughout the day. Luke taught me to cast, set the hook, and land the trout. He showed us several styles of casting. Our friends were in Mark's boat and they also landed a lot of trout. Guide selection was very good, which is most of the job. I've never used American Express fraud services, came close here. Mine is an unfortunate story, and strange. I gave a lot of opportunities for business to make amends, and they couldn't. The store captured my guides tip, and didn't pay him. Weird got weirder when they claimed I'd received the money in cash and said they had surveillance footage of the incident. I pressed for the footage! None was offered. Manager included. I hooked up the guide with his tip at his part time job as server at a local restaurant. This store kept his tip. Not cool. More remarkably, they couldn't work with me to get a reasonable conclusion and I ate the entire mistake. read more

On December 24, 2020 I was surprised with a fly fishing trip to the summit area of Colorado, our guide was Chris Fleming. I am 72 years old/young the trip was fantastic. Chris was the perfect guide both in instruction and support. I know he was subtly aware of my age, climbing around in snow and ice as well as wading in the stream. However Chris never made me feel what some would say is my age. (I am quite capable and physical. Quite a pleasure. The equipment provided was excellent as was our guide, Chris. The physical environment goes without saying was excellent as well. I would suggest that anyone considering a guided fly fishing trip consider Mountain Anglers and Chris's Fleming as a guide. One of my best fishing experiences ever. I booked a full day wade about a week in advance with my son for a Sunday. First off, everyone at the shop was very careful with social distance and masks etc. The gear we borrowed was great but the real star of the place was our guide, Josh B. A great down-to-earth guy who really knows his stuff. He took us to pretty empty (even on Sunday!) part of the Colorado and got us going quickly. We caught 12 in all! Josh also gave us some advice for a solo trip my son and I did and arranged for the right flies to be left at the store for us to pick up. Caught seven in Upper Slate Lake with his recs! I sure would like to rate this outfit higher but I can't. This review will have two main feedback items for last year's trip and this year. 2018: I used them last year to take my oldest son on his first fly trip. I was given a referral by a close friend and called a month in advance to book a day with him. When I showed up to check in, things were pretty hectic and nobody really greeted me. So I went up to an employee and told them I needed to check in for our trip with the specific guy we signed up with. I was then told "he isn't working today" and "I'm not really sure what happened". The guy could care less and we were put with a random guide. He was a really nice guy and good with my son which is the only reason I gave them a 2 instead of a 1. 2019: I called yesterday to book a half day trip for me and both of my sons. As I was booking the trip I told him the ages of my sons, 13 and 10. I am not making this up that his response was, "we don't recommend anyone below 13 years old as our guides don't want this to be a babysitting trip". My 10 year old is no baby, very athletic and follows directions to a tee. Perhaps he is young to fly fish by some standards but there are dozens of other ways this young man could have said the same thing without offending me. We did not use them but rather called Breck Outfitters. They are much friendlier and told me their recommended ages are 9 and up. read more

Andrew took my mom and I out on our first fly fishing adventure. He shared some great tips and tricks that had us out on the water in no time, in a beautiful and remote location. The fish were definitely biting and we learned about the currents and where fish may most likely be hanging out and what type of bugs they may eat at different stages of life. As conditions changed - we learned how to cast to adapt. We appreciated every minute and will definitely book future trips with him so we can learn more. Booked a guide a few weeks ago. Flew into Denver on Saturday. Float was supposed to be Sunday. Hadn't heard from the guide, so I called the shop when I landed, and Kevin said they don't want to go out on Sunday due to the weather. First of all, why hadn't I heard from them already? I had to call them to check in to find this out. And second of all, why didn't they call me on Friday? They knew I was coming in from out of town. Bad service. Would not recommend. I'm sure they will say, they can't control the weather. That's not the point here. It's about proactive communication. read more

Decent, though somewhat small selection of winter gear, they're not just for fishermen! We stopped in looking for winter boots and while their selection was on the small side, they did have a few we hadn't found elsewhere, especially Pajar brand from Canada. They also some items on sale, specifically Patagonia clothes that made them 10% cheaper than the Patagnoia store down the street. They're tucked into one of the "malls" but definitely check them out for different selection of items and possible items on sale. read more

Probably my favorite fly shop anywhere. I've been stopping in at Mountain angler every time I'm in Breckenridge since the early 90's. The staff is always friendly and helpful and the store has an excellent selection and provides good information. I have a special soft spot for the place since I bought my first rod there when I was in middle school (a sage ds2 demo rod and a great deal). Booked two trips with Mountain Angler. A float trip and a private river trip. My hackles were up from the first call where the booking agent kept using "35 years experience" as justification for everything. Said wading staffs weren't included as gear because they hadn't used them in 35 years. Ridiculous! Brought our own. The guide for the float trip called us 6:30pm the night before and told us if we wanted waders we would have to come down to the shop and get fitted. We were in the middle of making dinner and cocktails so that wasn't an option. No one had mentioned this pesky detail in several conversations we had prior to the reservation. Fortunately, we did have our own waders, though I wanted to use their equipment to try something different. And we had paid to put wear and tear on their equipment, not ours. The float trip was ok and Chris did a good job helping my wife who is recuperating from a knee injury. Caught around 8 fish between us. My wife lost a 20 incher because the drag on the reel was set too tight, even though Chris was right next to her. I missed the set on three additional fish to discover that the hook had broken off the dropper. My wife had the same issue. Chris failed to mention that sometimes that happens. He wasn't checking terminal tackle, but he did have his hands fill navigating the river. All in all not a bad day though. Private river trip was an expensive bust. We were promised the same guide for both trips, but we changed the date twice so I understand why that didn't happen. The new guide did not remember our conversation of the night before, nor did he know the river well. Started off with a 20 minute march through a cow/horse-paddy laden field with difficult footing, to discover we couldn't access the water he wanted to fish. Another 20 minute slog back. Hooked one decent fish but lost it: my bad. Nothing but less than 6 Inchers the rest of the day. The booking agent gave us a lot of marketing talk about how they had 5 rivers to float on and how the guide would select the best one for our day. Baloney. The guide had only floated two rivers all season. The Colorado was the only one anyone was fishing. Same deal for the private river. Exclusive, scenic, magical, blah,blah,blah. They simply put us with the guide and location that way most convenient for them. Thought I'd talk with the owner before posting a negative review. Got in touch with him to discover that his protocol for dealing with customer service issues was intimidation and bullying. The problems start at the top. Many other outfitters that respect their customers. Will not be coming anywhere close to Mt. Anglers again. I still can't shake the feeling I got played for a shmuck. read more

Came in from out of town for a few days and wanted to pick up a few flies and some advice from a local shop. Went in and said hello and asked about the area and local fisheries and was basically ignored. Their response to "hey I'm new to the area and was wondering some decent spots to fish" was greeted with a "everywhere is good." I asked about flies to use in the area and one of the employees just pointed towards a board with recommendations without saying anything. I wasn't expecting them to give up those secrets but a hello might be a good place to start. Not quite what I was expecting nor was it what I'm used to. Probably won't go back here when I return to Breckinridge next summer. read more

I have been in a few guided fly fishing trips and Logan from Mountain Angler was one of the best. Guiding for us on a recent Project Healing Waters trip Logan was professional, patient, extremely knowledgeable and seems to know here and what method is best for each stretch of river where we fished. He took the time to teach different methods of casting and flies and why we would use those in a certain situation. The quality of trout I caught with him were amazing, a testament to his experience and knowledge of fly fishing and guiding. I never write reviews (look at my profile) but I had a great experience today with the shop and with my guide Logan. I booked a last minute slot for a guide as a solo traveler and they were able to fit me in. I arrived a little early for my designated time but the shop signed me in anyway and told me Logan would be there shortly. The shop was slammed with people and their guides trying to get signed in...proper licenses...fitted for waders and boots etc. They moved through everyone pretty seamlessly and there were easily 15 to 20 people waiting to go fish. I grabbed a quick bit next door and went back to the shop. Logan was there and was introduced to me. The dude was on point and got me fitted for boots and waders in a snap. To shorten the story we dropped off my Jeep and I rode with Logan to our fishing spot for the day. Maybe 35 mins south of Breck, just off the highway and we were the only two people there. We geared up got to the river and got after it. I'd been fly fishing earlier in the week in Durango so Logan shortened his "this is how you do it" speech and we went fishing. We walked up river stopping at every hole that looked good. Within minutes of getting there I caught a small brown and then a rainbow. Logan taught me a few new ways to cast and they proved to be effective quickly. If I got snagged or messed up a cast, Logan fixed me up and we kept on fishing. All in all it was a great day. I ended up catching several larger trout. A rainbow that was 18 to 19 inches and several browns that were 14 to 16 inches. Probably landed 15 or so fish in 3 hours with another dozen that shook off the hook or that I tried to set the hook too hard and just pulled it out of their mouth. All told it was a great experience for me. The shop was great and my guide Logan was great. I learned a lot about fly fishing, caught more fish than I thought I would and along the way had fun conversations with Logan. read more

As a full service fly shop these guys are good. They have excellent guides (whom I have hired on multiple occasions). They also have an excellent fly selection and some good gear. However the owner and a few employees are not very friendly or just downright rude and arrogant. Fly fishing sometimes gets a bad reputation for being an elitist douchebag sport. It really is not, but there are a few employees here that are upholding that undeserved reputation. Update: employees have turned over and are once again very friendly and welcoming. I've been fishing with these guys for over 20 years. The guides know the area, put you on fish, and work hard to get you hooked up. The store has a very good selection of gear, flies, and clothing. My wife has food allergies, and they accommodate those with lunch. The owner of the shop remembers my name, and always greets me. One of a handful of shops I come back to time and again. Just a fantastic experience with Mountain Angler. The guys were terrific and lined up a guided trip on Black Friday. My son and I had a fantastic time catching some beautiful cutbows during a snow storm. Honestly my only regret was not booking a full day despite the cold. Used them for a trip with co-workers to go fly fishing. They provide all the equipment you need, and guides to take you to the best spots to fish. Everyone on my team caught at least one fish, and everyone had a great day out on the river. The man in charge was a little rude when we checked in and got suited up. We were a casual group, so I think he was a little pissed that we came a bit late and took time to get dressedd, instead of being out on the water by 5am. Luckily, the guides were nice and friendly and not at all rude like the man at the store. I recommend them for a great day out on the river, for both novice and expert fly fishers. read more

Ive been in a lot of fishing stores, and these guys not only have great stuff to buy, but they did a great job of making me feel like I belonged there. Fishing is fraternal at best and they treated me and my son like we were in the club. All that in spite of the fact that we are not really fly fishermen. We went for a full day trip with Cory, who I highly recommend. Yes -- we had a great day and caught a lot of fish, but the thing that distinguished him was that he was great to be around and did a great job teaching us more about how to do it ourselves. I would give this outfit a generous three. When I arrived at the shop in the morning The young man behind the counter was welcoming but the guide acted aloof and upset at me for missing a phone call from him the night before. They provided me with filthy wading boots which were still wet and sandy. When I got sand on the carpeting in the shop the owner started chastising me. Would be nice if they provided clean dry gear to begin with. My guides attitude ranged from grumpy at best to downright rude and condescending at times. I will preface this by saying my fishing skills were horrible that day. I broke off so many flies and wound up in the willows so many times. Instead of being professional about it he would throw out heavy sighs and looks of disgust even tossing one of the rods into the willows at one point. Kept insisting I wasn't listening to his directions when in reality I just didn't have the skills to do what he wanted. Then at the end of the day before I could hand him the tip he got in my face saying you know we who work in the service industry depend on tips. Told him I have it right here for you. I over tipped him because I believe fishing guides deserve to be over tipped, but I had to swallow very hard in doing so. What I can say positively is he really did know his stuff and still put me on fish. Despite all my flaws I still caught 9 fish. But if you're going to spend nine hours with someone you want to be pleasant and it wasn't. I would not go with this company again. read more

I received a quote 2 days ago from owner Jackson for $80 per person for a fly fishing lesson for my family of 6 traveling from Kansas City. Jackson was too busy in the store to finalize the reservation and requested that I call back. I called back 48 hours later to finalize the reservation and secure the deposit and Jackson informed me that his quoted price to me was "sold out" and no other option for his quoted price was available. Jackson did not inform me that his quote was a "special price" nor did he inform me that his quote was time sensitive. We are frequent visitors to Breckenridge several times a year and just love the area. Mountain Angler was fabulous 3 years ago however unfortunately I no longer recommend this company due to their current business practices. read more

I highly recommend this place and Gene Gamber as a guide! My daughter and I had never fly fished before. Gene was very cheerful and helpful. On the drive to the river he was like a tour guide explaining all about the region. When we got to the our location he pulled out folding chairs and carpet so we wouldn't have to stand in the dirt to put on our waders and shoes. He was a great coach with technique and strategy. When we were done, he even opened up a cooler and offered us soft drinks and candy bars! Gene made it a wonderful experience. read more
