We had such a great time at the Hampton Roads Black Food Festival at Mount Trashmore last weekend! The event was free and open to the public and featured over 20 Black-owned vendors serving everything from BBQ, catfish and Jamaican food to flavored lemonades, snow cones, a variety of fruit and other items. The atmosphere was full of good energy and music, with people coming together to celebrate local chefs and entrepreneurs. There were VIP tickets for purchase as well, but there was plenty to enjoy without them. Mt. Trashmore is the perfect venue for festivals; it has ample parking, open space, shaded shelter areas with seating, and a huge playground for kids. Overall, it was pretty nice and I hope this becomes an annual event. The lines and wait times for food were pretty long but that's normal for events like these. If you're looking for something fun to do that support local businesses, keep an eye out for future events here, you won't be disappointed!

Great evening to enjoy the cool summer breeze and get some exercise! We happened upon the Lantern Festival, so a bit crowded but wonderful weather to walk and enjoy this day! Highly recommend for family and friends to gather and just enjoy this blessed day!!

Nice open Venue with plenty of choices from local Vegan Vendors. We tried the Philly Beef, Shrimp Pi'Boy, and Loaded Chicken Fries, each was plentifully good portions, flavorful, and Setved Hot!

I was visiting Virginia Beach and had a few hours to spare. We went to Mount Trashmore Park where they were holding the Fil Fest USA event. It was just a few miles away from our hotel. What I liked about this park was how clean it was. The parking lot looked safe and clean, with plenty of spaces. The restrooms looked decent as well. There is a lake, Lake Trashmore, which was so peaceful. It was a bit gloomy when I was here but I still enjoyed looking out into the lake. There is a lot of space out here and plenty of paved walkways. There's a large hill if you have kids that enjoy rolling down them. Definitely a good place to get some steps in, have a picnic, walk your dog, or just look out into the lake.

This park truly brings all Hampton Roads park lovers, young and old, romantics, nature lovers and health enthusiasts. With plenty of parking available, a playground, a beautiful lake with plenty of nearby benches to sit and enjoy the view, tables to spread out and enjoy outdoor meals, lots of exercise equipment built in, paths and walkways. It also has hilly terrain and steps, clean public restrooms and staff that are walking around ensuring the place is well kept. It even has a stage that has been the venue of plenty of events and festivals such as Ohanafest and Filipino festival and Water Lantern Festival.

This park offers a lot and it is all good. Events all the time. Summer Carnival is a fun one for sure and the fireworks are a must see for the forth of July. We recently went for the Firefighter combat challenge. If you are looking for something to do. Look up events and go check it out. This park just like most are open from sunrise to sunset. Running and walking is an Easy 1.9 mile loop with lake views and lots of ducks and geese. For more of a work out they have workout stations and you can run up and down Mount Trashmore. They have stairs going up one side and down the other. That alone is a great workout They have the best playground I have ever seen. It is called Kids Cove. Plenty of easy parking in that area too. Don't forget your kite. Perfect place to fly kites. Just an added note. It is Dog, Kid, and Bike friendly. A little about this unique park. Mount Trashmore is 1 of 15 Landfills that has been turned into beautiful parks. This park was transformed from a pile of trash into a wonderful mountain in 1974

One man's trash is truly another man's treasure. This park is definitely a treasure. It is amazing and has everything you would want in a park and more. There is tons and tons of park over three large parking lots. The park spans 165 acres and features two man-made mountains that were created by compacting layers of solid waste and clean soil. The main mountain, Mount Trashmore, stands 60 feet high and 800 feet long. It is marked by a large replica of the Virginia State Seal. The smaller mountain, which is near the back of the park is called Encore Hill. I saw many people running up and down the hill working out. More power to them. There is a pull bar at the base of the hill to really get the blood pumping. There was also a lot of people just sitting on top of the hills, relaxing and enjoying the breeze. The park has an amazing and well paved running trail that weaves around the park's perimeter, around the lake, and through the mountains. You can run for as long or as little as you want. As if that was not enough, the park has a fitness trail with equipment placed along the trail that you can use to do different exercises. There is a very nice outdoor amphitheater here with grass seating. It is used to host festival, small concerts, and other performances. The park has a picturesque lake with benches placed around it to sit and a small pier to go out on. You will find some picnic shelters at this park. There are 3 large and 2 medium shelters with grills by the amphitheater along the lake.. Additionally, there are 6 small shelters that also have grills located in the front of the park between the lake and the small playground area. There are 2 awesome sand volleyball courts along the lake, by the large shelters, as well as 2 corn hole courts. As I mentioned there is small playground near the front of the park that has a medium sized jungle gym with slides and a swing set toddler and traditional swings. The other playground area located on the opposite side of Mount Trashmore is amazing. It is called Boardwalk Kids Cove Playground and spans 26,000 miles. It was built in 2010 and is in great shape. It consists of 3 distinct play areas built on a rubber surface. The first area is a giant jungle gym with a bunch of slides, elevated walkways, and climbers. It is awesome. Another area consists of traditional and toddler swings, in addition to a one-of-a-kind wheelchair swing. The third area is where you will find a variety of climbing structures. Kids Cove is complete with benches and picnic shelters that parents or caretakers can sit and watch their littles play. The area is fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and has a well needed restroom facility there. One last amenity that I would like to note is the park's skate park. It is a nice place to shred and could easily be a stand alone park. The park is approximately 24,000 square feet and welcomes skateboarders, inline skaters, and BMX bikers. Some of its equipment includes a two-level half-pipe of 5' and 6' heights and an attached quarter pipe a 5' spine, a 2.5' rollover with grind rails, and a variety of arced and straight grind rails and boxes. There is also a vert ramp located just outside the park. It is 13.5 feet tall and 40 feet wide, but was closed for extended maintenance while I was there. This is an awesome park and I spent a good half of a beautiful day here. It is a must see and is the ultimate destination park. There is something for everyone here. They have concessions (seasonal), restroom facilities, playgrounds, a lake, picnic area, workout structures and you can even rent equipment like badminton rackets, corn hole bags, footballs, frisbees, horseshoes, rubber playground balls, soccer balls, volleyballs, and wheelchairs from the park's office, for free with your driver's license or other form of government issued ID.

A nice pre Va. Beach Half Marathon run.

Pretty awesome park in the heart of Virginia Beach. Well . . . I guess it's not in the heart of Va Beach, but I grew around this part so I'll consider it the heart. ;) Although I no longer live in the area, I make a point to visit Mount Trashmore Park to run a few miles during my trips back home. Doing this brings me back to my high school's cross country meets that were held at Mt. Trashmore. This is the perfect place to have a nice walk or run and enjoy that Va. Beach fresh air. I personally like "attacking" the hills to get in some hill work to improve my running stamina. If running is not your thing, there are some play parks for the kiddies and a skateboard park for not-so-young kiddies. One small tip: Do NOT mess with the geese; they are kind of mean. Let them do their thing while you do your thing . . . there's enough park for both humans and waterfowl.

Great place to take the dog and kids too. Tires them out real good. Family movie nights are always quieter after a trip to Mt. Trashmore

This was a brief stop on our trip to Virginia. And when I say brief, I mean we climbed to the top, looked around, and that was it. This spot is unique bc it's an old landfill and it's very hard to miss from the highway. If you're tourists like us, you want to check it out. There is ample parking here at no cost and the landfill has a few step options to the top. I'd suggest checking out the artistic steps on the side. I opted not to take pictures from the top. But you can see a nice little lake below and a large gazebo. The top offers some nice running paths (judging by the looks, maybe a quarter mile around). Other than that, there isn't much. We didn't make much time to check out the rest of the park. There were plenty of paths around the park though. If you're not coming here to get a workout in or exercise, and plan to just do the tourist thing, then you don't need more than 15 minutes of your time. While it's great they made something for the residents to use out of a landfill, this was just ho hum for me.

    Abby R.

Pleasantly surprised! I had never been here before. I had no idea that there were 2 playgrounds, a skatepark, a little pier to walk by the water, and an entire trail to walk around the lake (with fitness equipment stops). We will surely be back. You could totally pack snacks and enjoy a few hours here with kids. There were a lot of people doing different things. Some were wearing PINK, looked as though they had a Cancer Walk going on; others were biking around, there were people in a group doing boxing, and families walking with kids.

It is titled the "Park for Everybody". The amazing park/play area is 15,000 square feet and features wheelchair accessible entrances. It was built in honor of Josh Thompson, an avid beach lover, who lost his battle with ALS. Josh's family wanted to go to the beach, but he stayed behind because of the difficulty of getting his wheelchair to the beach, across the sand and down to the surf. The park is very nice and has a huge jungle gym with a couple of slides, a sculptural of a dolphins, a surfboard, and a wave that children can play on, raised sand tables for sandcastle building at an accessible height, a sensory board for autistic children, Sway Fun glider, and a pebble walk. What I find really cool is that they have fully accessible playground -beach wheelchairs available at no charge, on a first come, first served basis (only during season though). You will also find some cement pads here, with post marking the spots, that are covered with a little sand, making playing in the sand more accessible. Just outside of the park is a nice statue of a man and young boy holding surf boards. The sculpture is on top of a granite base that has the names of donors and the inspiration behind the park inscribed on it. Definitely worth a look. This first of its kind park is a very nice addition to VIrginia Beach's Boardwalk. It is accessible and fun for all kids to play on. They do suggest that it is best for kids aged 5 to 12. With close supervision it's also good for younger children (note that there are small gaps in the openings along the playground system). There are also raised, connected walkways connecting the system of slides and a lookout point. The next closest lot is Rudee Loop Parking Lot (also a municipal parking lot with a fee). Both are located on Atlantic Ave. There is limited meter parking, too. Visitors to the area staying at the Oceanfront could also walk there. -- Things to Note -- During peak seasonal times, it's usually pretty busy with kids. There is no fence or physical boundary between the park and the water, but it is situated well enough away from the water that it didn't pose an immediate safety concern. -- Takeaways -- This is an large, accessible playground that is a nice option for my toddler when we visit the Boardwalk, and I can see it appealing to families visiting the beach who have kids with varying interests. The main attraction is its playground. If you are at the Boardwalk, it's worth a visit for children. It might not be worth it to you to go out of your way if you don't intend to visit the ocean or Boardwalk, too, or if you aren't interested in its accessibility features. Simply because paying for parking at the Oceanfront and sand in the kids shoes' could be a few minor drawbacks.
