Wildlife and trails galore. Even camping onsite. There is free parking and even though this is tucked away off the interstate, it is very calm and peaceful

A wonderful place to walk or bike for exercise! Will be visiting more frequent in 2026!

This majestic park had some construction going on, but was perfectly accessible. It had nice facilities and an inland area as well as a stretch of beach. The inland area is a blackwater swamp that really feels like you're in the Deep South. I have to remind myself that there are no alligators in a place like this. There were some small turtles that were engaged in a frankly ridiculous duel (awfully hard for non-snapping turtles to actually injure each other). The aesthetics were nice, the trails abundant, and I wrapped up with a sunset on the beach looking out towards the bridge, albeit with some sandflies as there wasn't a ton of wind on the day. The sense of history as well as the fascinating range of natural sites made me glad that I spent money on a Virginia state park pass.

A really beautiful setting along the Virginia coast. There's a large number of dunes, filled with birds, hermit crabs and a wide variety of plant life. The water feels warmer than it does at Virginia Beach. Very peaceful place to catch some rays

First Landing State Park is easily one of the best spots in Virginia Beach to get outside and enjoy nature. There are so many trails to choose from, whether you're looking for a long run, a scenic bike ride, or just a casual walk. The park hugs the inlet, so you get beautiful water views along the way. One of the best parts about this park is that it truly has something for everyone. If you want to run 14 miles through the woods, you can. If you'd rather take an easy one mile stroll along the beach, that's an option too. The variety makes it perfect for any mood or energy level. I bring my dog here all the time, and he absolutely loves it. There's plenty of space for him to explore, lots of shade, and always something new to sniff. It's a great spot for a peaceful morning walk or an active day outside, even post snow storm! Parking is easy, and the park is well-maintained. There's a small fee to enter, but it's worth it for how much there is to do. Whether you're a local or just visiting, First Landing is a must if you love the outdoors. Beautiful scenery, well kept trails, and the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. I never get tired of coming here!

I've visited this state park for years and make a point to get out here for a hike every time I'm in Virginia Beach. I've checked out the campground and would love to do an overnight campout, but so far that's still on the 'to do' list. The hiking here is great!! There are no steep inclines but the views of the wetlands and woods are really spectacular. Their website says the trails go through, "cypress swamp, salt marsh, maritime forest, freshwater wetlands, dunes, and bay shoreline." We're told that in the colonial era, pirates hid out here when the authorities wanted to chat with them!! On my last hike, we saw a cottonmouth snake lounging in a swamp! Wow!! Stay on the boardwalks and trails!! Don't poke the bear or snake. This is a great state park and offers lots of great options for campers and hikers. We will be back next time we're in the area.

For starters, even though the address is Virginia Beach, this state park is on the coast of the Chesapeake Bay. The advantage is that it's not crowded. That being said, it's a state park so there is a fee to park here. $7 on a weekday, and $10 weekends April - October. My friend lives down here so she has an annual pass. Parking was almost at capacity when we went. It's a dog friendly beach, but there's a fee for that too. I'm not sure if you are supposed to keep your fur baby on a leash, but I don't care if they behave. It's lovely here. Not crowded like Virginia Beach. You can actually have a relaxing day at the beach. They have changing/bathrooms here. Picnic tables not far from the beach too. It's near a military training center, so don't be alarmed if you see a flyover. It may be noisy at times too.

We camped in the park for three nights and had a wonderful time. The staff when checking in were great. The sites are amazing. Very private and large sites. An easy walk to the beach and a beautiful setting. It was really nice to see that the VB buses came into the park and were available to see around the city. The camp store was nice as well. We had a wonderful time!

We were looking for a place to take the doggoes and read about this park. It was $10 per car to get in and there is so much to do! There are tons of scenic hiking trails, as well as cabins here. However, we chose the beach since it was a nice summer day. The dogs are allowed on the beach here and everyone was having a ball! We will definitely be back with more friends and a picnic!

We LOVE Virginia State Parks, so when visiting Virginia Beach, we knew that we'd have to visit First Landing State Park. Entering inland from Shore Drive, you first come to the Park Office/ Contact Station. Here, you need to pay the required fee of $7 for parking, and envelopes are provided to self-pay if the ranger isn't manning the booth. We have an annual pass, so we continued to the Trail Center (TC) where there is plentiful parking, restrooms, vending machines, small shop/information from a ranger, and the trailheads for a few trails. We picked up a trail map, and decided that we would walk a little over 4 miles, starting on Long Creek Trail (trailhead is back on the entrance road), eventually walking along the edge of Broad Bay and Long Creek, then veering onto the connector Kingfisher Trail to get back to the Cape Henry Trail and back to our car via the Bald Cypress boardwalk. It was a perfect March day, with temperatures in the mid-60s with a gentle breeze. The trails were well-maintained, and we encountered quite a few people out for strolls or walking their dogs. There are quite a few benches in strategic and picturesque locations, especially along the water -- so we enjoyed a picnic lunch while enjoying a view of the water. The trails are mostly flat, and easy to navigate. You are often walking on pine needles, or sand, or gravel. There is sometimes the sound of airline jets in the distance.

First Landing is one of the most beautiful state parks to visit in Virginia that offers swamplands, marshes, hardwood forests, and, every so often, a touch of magic. It's my most often visited park in Virginia Beach. There's a phenomenon that can only be described as a swamp rainbow appearing over the marshy waters during different times of the year. These swamp rainbows are a rare occurrence, yet just like the rainbows that appear in the sky, they're absolutely breathtaking. Today I had the luck of the Irish to experience this phenomena. The rainbow effect occurs because of the natural oils released by decaying vegetation (conifer needles) The decomposing pine in the water release tannic acid and a thin film forms on top of pooled water in swamps and marshes. When the sunlight hits it at a certain angle, you can see the gorgeous multi-layered colors. If you look at the water in a shadow, it appears to be normal swamp water. But, on a sunny day, you can see the rainbow viewing from an angle. The water also needs to be still for a long period of time for the rainbows to appear, any movement from sheet flow, wind disturbances, or current will "destroy the fragile rainbow film. The very cold conditions were perfect to see the brilliance. This phenomenon reportedly also happens at various swamps and marshes along the Eastern seaboard. (Florida, North and South Carolina). With sections still having a slight sheet of ice- the colors were not as vibrant, but still very, very cool to experience. Always recommend First Landing State Park anytime of the year.

Great trails! Lots of good options that were easy to moderate hiking. The trails we took were mainly well shaded so it wasn't too hot. We enjoyed our time here! Bring some good comfy shoes. And wear good clothing. Bring some water and you'll be set! Check out the trial guide so you know where you're going and how long/how difficult your trail might be.

Beautiful park with trails, beaches, and campgrounds. There are multiple entrances and boat access too. Great place for family portraits, which was the reason for our most recent visit! Parking (in November) was $7.00, they do take credit cards for those of us who don't carry cash. We went to the 64th street entrance (which is also the boat access entrance) off Pacific Avenue - once you get past the sentry, there is more parking at the end of the windy road if you want to be parked closer to the water! It's definitely dog friendly, the trails are manageable for a flat walk with your pup.

Ask the Community - First Landing State Park

    Is it good for camping?

Yes! There are two sides of the park. One side is for camping and the other is for walking trails. I hear nothing but good things about this park and it's camp grounds.

Is there any access to the actual Atlantic or just the Chesapeake?

    Just the Chesapeake.

How strictly is the proof of rabies vaccination enforced? I'm arriving from out of state with an old dog that can't have a rabies vaccine due to a compromised immune system. This is likely his last trip... I'd hate to leave him home.

No one checked our dog so chances are you are fine. In fact the fee collection station was empty.

We got out a there were several different dinosaur displays. We took advantage of this kid friendly freebie and took lots of pics. The grounds weren't really taken care of. So it was grass and weeds growing around some of the displays. Now that it's cold I'm fine, but if it were summer I'd be terrified of seeing a snake, because there are bushes everywhere. The meters cost about $2/ hour and the lots vary in price. There is a restroom facility right across the boardwalk from it, which is a plus. This play park is the epitome of accesible parks. It is titled the "Park for Everybody". The amazing park/play area is 15,000 square feet and features wheelchair accessible entrances. It was built in honor of Josh Thompson, an avid beach lover, who lost his battle with ALS. Josh's family wanted to go to the beach, but he stayed behind because of the difficulty of getting his wheelchair to the beach, across the sand and down to the surf. The park is very nice and has a huge jungle gym with a couple of slides, a sculptural of a dolphins, a surfboard, and a wave that children can play on, raised sand tables for sandcastle building at an accessible height, a sensory board for autistic children, Sway Fun glider, and a pebble walk. What I find really cool is that they have fully accessible playground -beach wheelchairs available at no charge, on a first come, first served basis (only during season though). You will also find some cement pads here, with post marking the spots, that are covered with a little sand, making playing in the sand more accessible. Just outside of the park is a nice statue of a man and young boy holding surf boards. The sculpture is on top of a granite base that has the names of donors and the inspiration behind the park inscribed on it. Definitely worth a look. This first of its kind park is a very nice addition to VIrginia Beach's Boardwalk. It is accessible and fun for all kids to play on. They do suggest that it is best for kids aged 5 to 12. There is no fence or physical boundary between the park and the water, but it is situated well enough away from the water that it didn't pose an immediate safety concern. -- Takeaways -- This is an large, accessible playground that is a nice option for my toddler when we visit the Boardwalk, and I can see it appealing to families visiting the beach who have kids with varying interests. The main attraction is its playground. If you are at the Boardwalk, it's worth a visit for children. It might not be worth it to you to go out of your way if you don't intend to visit the ocean or Boardwalk, too, or if you aren't interested in its accessibility features. Simply because paying for parking at the Oceanfront and sand in the kids shoes' could be a few minor drawbacks.
