Beautiful spot. The trails should be expanded along the water. There is well worn trails, where you could tell people walked. Those need cleaned up and become official walking trails. Beautiful spot. Lots of picnic areas. Didn't do pics of those wanted to show the beauty that could showcased with well maintained walking trails.

I haven't explored the whole park yet. On my visit my time was limited. I was here to try out a new camera and just parked along the canal near the bridge. Once parked I setup under the crape myrtle trees along the water and waited for the bridge to open. Fortunately it was on the hour, there were a couple of boats waiting to go through and I was able to get my photos pretty quick. I'm happy with the shots and will be returning to catch some sunset photos later this summer.

Great Bridge Lock Park is located by the draw bridge. There are boats, picnic areas and a playground. The waters on a sunny day makes it extra nice.

There's something about being near the water that is relaxing. Peaceful. Restorative. And so when I noticed the Great Bridge Lock Park, I headed here to get some peace. The park has benches and shade and a great view of the water. This isn't the Atlantic - that's a good ways from here. It's the canal and some lakes with a boat launch which was being used by a bunch of dudes with jetskis today. Still, a nice spot for a picnic as they have some pavilions and some cookout spots and some folks are even fishing. I left relaxed. [Review 10832 overall, 602 of 2019.]

Always a great little park for a family day! We do try to avoid this park on really hot and sunny days the play equipment gets pretty hot! You can always find people fishing crabbing and enjoying family on the drive to park. The children's playground is great and was redone about a year ago. One warning is the way up to the slides is very high! Watch your little ones! They have some good path ways in the back. In the summer they get pretty over grown but still a nice walk near the water. We have also taken the kayaks out on the ramp and had a great time on the water. Lots of parking for cars and people with boats and trailers! They do have bathrooms but sometimes are locked they do have a Porta potty beside the bathrooms

Nice little park. Peaceful and quiet! I loved exploring and taking pictures. Went on a cloudy day, but still managed to get some nice pics.

A very nice park with the river and the boat ramps. We had the birthday parties, a bridal shower, and many others held at this park. The trees and the water are really pretty for the viewings. It has some swamps around the park (Chesapeake is famous for having so many swamps) and there are some awesome flamingos glancing on the swamps. If you want to go out for a stroll on a boat on the water from the Elizabeth River to the Waterside in Norfolk for a lunch (there are rental piers for you to park your boat), Norfolk Naval Base (the world's largest naval base) sightings, or even to the Chesapeake Bay for the off shore fishing, start there! You can also catch the crabs at this park!

This is a great little park to go to in the heart of Great Bridge. There are some spots to sit right next to the water, there's a playground for the kids, there are picnic areas in the back near the dock. You can see people all the time crabbing and fishing. I hear there are trails for walking and biking but I have not been there yet. I will definitely be checking that out soon.

This is a popular spot for folks to go fishing, crabbing, and to launch their boats. The boat launch area has one picnic table nearby for folks to watch the boats take-off into the Elizabeth River. It would be nice if there were more picnic tables or benches along the waterfront and waterways. There is a nice play park for the little ones and a public restroom nearby. They have picnic tables with grills in the grassy areas under the pine trees.

No playground for kids but full of historic value

The peninsula makes for a nice escape from the strip malls and highways nearby. All around scenic city park.

I loved the displays and the information about the Enslaved People who dug out the swamp to allow others to navigate the waterways. I was so happy that we went on a brisk day when the bugs were laying low. HeeHee! We were able to walk around and look at the dock, the farm house, and a few other out buildings for the farm area. Very interesting that they were families that still lived next to the swamp area. The parking lot is well-kept and free. We found a few places to sit and eat, as well as a few water fountains for visitors. Everything was clean and tidy. We enjoyed listening to the water. Very nice visit!

I expected some dirt trails and pine needle tails and smelly water to brave through. Cattails or pussy willows if you prefer. Instead I got hard pavement and dogs. I did walk a little ways out. It just wasn't my thing. Cheers to the people who bike and pet walk here. If you pick up poo, put the bag in the trash. Why pick it up if you try to anonymously drop it further down the trail?

We also wanted formal training and certifications and we found this place online. We also thought seeing Virginia and the east coast a bit would have been a great time for my wife Brittany's birthday. So we flew to Virginia's SailTime courses instead of one of the the ones in our own state. We flew from California and I spoke with Connie and she was kind enough to let us stay on a 41 ft yacht (Adiona, a 41 ft Jenneua) for our stay in Virginia which saved us about half a grand on hotels. When we landed a lady named Brooke made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. When we got on board to unpack there was even a note waiting for us that said happy birthday. Brooke was a sweetheart for sure and we felt like family by the time we had set our bags down. She made sure of it. We met our captain the next morning. A man named Jim Lant who took us through our 101, 103 and 104 courses over the next 6 days. We had a GREAT time and I honestly didn't want to leave when we finished up our last tests. Those six days we sailed every day and every place we sailed too seemed to have friendly people there who all knew each other and our captain Jim. The first ocean sail my wife and I ever did together was from Norfolk to cape Charles and that's pretty cool. Well miss the people and sailing for sure! Everyone who loves sailing should come here and meet Connie, Jim and Brooke. You won't regret it and we won't ever forget it. Jim is the BEST captain.

Captain Jim was absolutely amazing. He was so patient and did such a fantastic job of teaching us about sailing and he allowed all of us to take part in one way or another. It's generally really hard to find activities that all 6 of us enjoy due to the age range but this turned out to be an absolutely perfect day. I would highly recommend Sailtime if you are thinking of trying this adventure! Working with them on scheduling was so easy and smooth as well. Be warned, you will want a sail boat afterward.....

The boat is beautiful and super clean and feels like a transport in time or like going on a boat ride in the 1920's. There are plenty of places to chose from to sit, whether you're on a date or in a group. As the boat took off, the crew invited anyone who wanted to help raise the sails to help & learn. It was fun to watch this and experience it up close. The Captain narrated the first part of the trip pointing out a bunch of history and current military ships & projects. You're able to get up and walk around the boat, so we checked things out from all sides, plus under the main deck there is a kind of snack shop with a bar. We got lemonade and it was refreshing & reasonably priced. At the turnaround, there was a live musician who went around the boat playing guitar & singing. This liven up the ride & again felt old fashioned in a good way. Sunset was beautiful & it was peaceful to be on the boat. A very pleasant experience. Now that said, if you want a party boat or high energy experience, this is not for you. The ship is slow. It was a very quiet ride and the 2 hours did feel long (but I'm an adventurous person). My husband and I both agreed that it was nice to almost force ourselves to slow down and just be :) The crew was great, it's easy to book, easy to find at the Marina & a fun activity for the right crowd!

These are top 5 reasons why I love coming here: 1. Parking It only costs $3 for the whole day (until midnight, I believe). No need to keep plugging the meter. There's a parking machine located right by the entrance of the walkway to the beach. Can't remember if you need to place it on the dash, but why not? Just in case... 2. Public washrooms and showers There are washrooms with changing rooms, showers underneath the roof (on the other side of the washrooms) outside, equipped with the short shower heads to rinse your feet. ESSENTIAL with young kids. 3. Public beach access with tide pool The beach is the end of Chick's beach, right under Lesner Bridge. The bridge itself provides great shade on a portion of the beach, although a lot of people like to fish there too, so we usually end up moving a little further down. Also, depending on the time of day you go, there is a tidepool and the water is not as rough so it's relatively safe for the kiddos. Of course, still watch your kids. 4. Traffic Meaning, it's not crowded there at all! Only a handful of people the last couple of times we've been there. 5. American Brew The best part is coffee and bites is right next door! It's a short walk from the parking lot, but if you forget to pack a lunch, American Brew is located right at the corner of the street (you'll most likely see it before you turn in to the parking lot).
