Covered picnic tables throughout the park. a few fitness stations on the 1 1/2 mile hike. VERY easy loop hike. Starts out with a cement trail and turns into fine gravel trail around the lake. Lots of people running, kids playing and dogs walking. My favorite thing I found a bench dedicated to their sweet dog Savanna. And they offer doggy poop bags. Encouraging a nice clean park. Nice little natural trail around a lake. It is about 1.5 miles for one rotation around the lake. There is paved parking lot for the park and there a relative decent sized playground for kids to play at. Only portapotty available for bathroom facilities which I guess is normal for the smaller parks in the area. The path is clean and nice but there are bicycles and other wheeled vehicles sharing the walking path. There were birds using the lake but I didn't see any sign of any fish or life in the lake so I am not sure if there are fish or anything else in the lake. I went to the right to start my walk and I am not sure if that was the wrong way but it seemed everyone was going the other way or it was just that I didn't catch up to anyone ahead of me so it looked like I was the only one walking my way. I took my walk on a supposed warm day but the weather changed and it was a little cold so I had to walk a little quicker than expected. There were people jogging the path, walking their dogs, and just sitting by the lake. There are lots of wooden pierlike structures that get you close to the water but like I said before, no signs of fish as far as I could see. read more

I love this place. It's a great park for a nice walk. It's mostly wooded, which I really love. There's only one spot along the trail that I don't like because it parallels the highway, but it's a short stretch, relatively speaking. If I have music playing in my ears, I don't notice it as much. I like to come here with my friends and husband for a good walk & talk session... the trail is nice and wide, so it's good for that. There are usually quite a few people there, but "traffic" tends to flow smoothly in both directions, so it never feels crowded. There's no fee to get in and it's not far from home, so it's become a go-to for me. Each lap is 1.5 miles, which is also nice because it's a good increment to go by when deciding how many laps you want to do... not too short and not too long. Definitely recommend this park! read more

I love this park! There are plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the nature. There's always something special going on such as a snake slithering by, or birds chirping, or a turtle popping its head out in the water. Around the 1.5 trail which is a circle around the water you have places to stop like picnic tables, benches, and docks for fishing. I do wish they'd add proper bathrooms and a water fountain. Parking is small and gets packed but across the street is parking by a business area. I have seen some updates to the children's park. I also think I saw some trail additions in the wooded area , there were lots of clearings going on, but haven't ventured to the new trail yet. Love nature? This is the perfect little trail for you! Located around a quiet lake with a distance of about 1.5 miles, Oak Grove Lake Park (OGLP) is truly a gem in the Chesapeake area. My husband and I frequent this park not only to get a run in, but also to walk our two small dogs and get some fresh air. Something I truly appreciate about OGLP is the size of the trail. It's large enough for others to pass by and comfortable for group walks. Not to mention the scenery is BREATHTAKING. Unfortunately, I have removed one star due to the lack of parking in the area, especially near the trail opening. (City of Chesapeake take notes!) Oak Grove Lake Park (OGLP) is a great park to get some exercise and fresh air! Nature has such a positive effect on the mind and soul and it was just what we needed after the Christmas craziness. According to the City of Chesapeake's website, OGLP has 65 acres of hardwood forest and wetlands. I put two and two together and it's also the park that I drive by every time I get out of Chesapeake. It's located right next to the Chesapeake Expressway (it was a little nerve wrecking to be walking right next to the highway - it's only a small portion though). - Parking - There is a small lot, but overflow parking is along the sides leading out to the entrance of the parking. It was pretty busy since kids are off on Winter Break. - Trail - The trail is 1.5 miles total around a lake with mile markers at every quarter mile to keep you in check. The trail is easy, flat with no inclines. It's not paved, so don't really recommend little scooters for the kids, but bikes would be fine. And strollers would be great too. The trail has picnic tables, benches, trash cans and observation decks throughout, so plenty of opportunities for snack breaks or just contemplation. There are also exercise stations with signs. Lot of trees with beautiful view of the lake from different angles. The path is wide enough that there is enough room for two-way traffic as well as runners who want to pass. And the kids favorite part? The playground of course! It is located at the trail head. It seems pretty new, because it's not the generic playground structure you see at most parks. There are also Port-o-Potties located across from the playground for your convenience. - Pets - Sign indicated all pets must be on a leash, no longer than 5 feet. Stay safe, Friends! read more

What a beautiful little park! Well-marked with every .25 miles easily ticked off on large wooden markers and a well-maintained and clear and flat footpath wide enough for like 10 people to walk beside one another so plenty of room to space out for walkers, runners, and dog-walkers. Almost no roots to worry about tripping over and super flat. We came this morning for a quick, small, work get-together outside so we could distance and enjoy some team bonding which we haven't done since before COVID took over. There is plenty of parking and signage for this park and it's easy to find via GPS. Parking is a small gravel lot at the end, or along the side of the rode on the shoulder (gravel and clear) if that lot fills up. There is a covered pavilion with about 4 large picnic tables at the entrance to the walking path with 3 well-kept portapotties far enough away to not gross you out if you eat there. Along the walk there are several stop-offs with benches for a rest or to just take in nature. Plenty of people were out running and working out and walking with their dogs, while it runs beside the interstate in a few areas, it feels like you're in the woods. This trail follows the lake and has beautiful water views. This is an excellent, easy 1.5 miles to run (I think I clocked a PR today) and something I plan to work into my training because I don't have to worry about spraining an ankle! read more

We adore this park for leisurely walks and outdoor play and our little one always looks forward to a visit on the weekends. The parking situation on busy weekends can be discouraging - it is a very small lot and getting in and out can be tricky when it's crowded. You are able to park on Byron Street and I have seen plenty of people park in the nearby executive lots on weekends without issue. The park offers a clean, well-shaded play area and plenty of swings and opportunities to climb. There are a handful of benches around the playground and a nearby shelter for picnics. The only restrooms available are port-a-potties near this shelter and playground. There is a 1.5-mile loop around the lake that is mostly packed dirt but is clean and also shaded, depending on time of day. It's wide enough for bikes, runners and dog-walkers. The far end of the loop runs right next to the bypass, so it can be noisy at that end, but the majority of the trail is very peaceful with a few places to stop overlooking the water. Oak Grove Lake Park is well maintained by Chesapeake Parks and Rec and a beautiful spot to check out if you haven't already! read more

Nice place. Lots of sun and shade. It's huge and when I visited this afternoon there were lots of people about. Most were walking or exercising, out with their dogs and I also saw some folks fishing. My only complaint would be that parking needs to be expanded in a big way. The main parking lot is incredibly to small for the amount of people in the park. Not only were all the space full but so was the road to the space and some people were parked on the main road outside the park entrance. I ended up going to the 2nd lot at the end of Byron St and entering the park from the back by the highway. Time was limited this afternoon however I've planned my next visit to be an early morning visit so I can walk the entire loop around the lake. read more

Definitely took advantage of this amazing weather today and got a walk in. I absolutely love this park it's so beautiful and a great walk. They have a decent parking lot, but when it's busy it's impossible to find a spot. We always park on the road on in the parking lot across the street. They have some Porta potty at the front of the park after you walk the concrete trail. They have a great kids park, was done not to long ago. Great place for the kids to get out and play. Walking around the lake is 1.5 miles. You can get lost in your walk just looking at everything and taking the nature in. They also have benches and look outs all along the way. You can fish, bring dogs, and bikes. The trail walking up is concert the rest of the walk is gravel and dirt. In the front we also let our kids kick off their shoes and put their feet in the water! read more

Five stars for this stunning park that is truly a jewel in the Chesapeake parks crown. 65 acres of old growth hardwood forest and a central lake, surrounded by a mixed-use 1.5 mile path for walkers, joggers, bladers and bikers. The trail from the parking lot to the lake is concrete paved and ADA-compliant. Some of the fishing/observation platforms are also handicap-accessible. Fishing the lake is permissible and it is stocked with large mouth bass and catfish. Catch and release, please. A license is required but not available at the park so plan ahead. This walking trail is beautiful! I brought my dog and she got to see many other dogs, and we saw a bald eagle too plus lots of squirrels. Nice wide walking trails and plenty of benches and lookout areas over the water. Getting there was easy. I will say parking is a bit lacking, but it looks like many people park across the street in an office complex parking center. Will definitely be returning for evening or daytime walks! read more

I think I may have found my new favorite park in Hampton Roads. If you're looking for a park to relax at, take a leisurely walk with family or friends or to tire out your four legged furry friend, this the park to do it at! I went here with my family and our beloved corgi for a casual walk on a recent Saturday morning and this place was PACKED. There's a small parking lot near the entrance about (30 spots) or so and we got lucky and found a spot right there; there's also street parking that is available as well. I would say that 90% of the walking path/trail is not paved, on slightly uneven terrain with some light sandy trails so would recommend wearing some shoes you don't mind getting dirty. I think the great place about this place is that the trail surrounds a huge lake in the middle is shaded/cover by trees for most of the path which is great during the summer heat! There are various breaks in the path in which you can walk to the end of a "dock" that overlooks the lake. The walk is fairly easy and relatively flat. Our dog had a hard time with it as she has short legs and had to take multiple breaks every 10-15 mins haha. I didn't encounter anyone leaving trash on the ground and everyone that passed us seemed very friendly. This park is an A+ in my book! SN: only downside, no doggy water fountains or trashcans located along the path. read more

Oak grove is one of my favorite parks in Chesapeake! I run here everyday and take dog for a walk every weekend. It's always well maintained clean and the people are mostly friendly. Parking in the designated lot can be tricky as it's kinda tight but if you park on the street or in the lot across you won't have any issues. And unlike the similar mt trashmore park, there aren't any geese so no accompanying goose poop! Great park highly recommend read more

The obvious attraction here is the massive lake the park surrounds. You can catch groups of people fishing, taking pictures, walking, jogging or even just sitting down and taking in the scenery. This was my first time and the fall aesthetics are already in bloom. My son and I walked the trail around conversing and admiring the changing of the season. I absolutely love this park!! The trail is 1.5 mile around and the best part is that it's shaded so that helps with the heat. Being able to view the lake while you walk around trail is just so serene. I like to put my headphones in and just walk for as long as I can and enjoy the view. There's lots of tables and shelters around the park so it would be a great place to to have a picnic or a nice lunch. There's also slides and swings for kids and I see folks out there fishing all the times. My only critique would be better bathroom area. Right now there are a few Port-a-Potties out there but those are like the least sanitary option for public bathrooms so I always make sure I go before I head out there. This is a great park and the view just can't be beat. Watching the sun set over the lake is a must see and I bet you could get some amazing pictures out there as well. This is my new favorite park! What a gem! I'd never been down that part of Volvo Pkwy before. There is a small parking lot when you arrive that quickly fills up. People were parked along the side of the entrance and there is a business parking lot across the street. Not sure if it's okay to park there or not. After a short walk along the wooded path, you see the playground on your right. Straight ahead is the beautiful lake. You can go follow the path around the lake in either direction, but the extra workout stations are numbered in order starting on the right. The path around the lake is through the woods, but the path is wide and not paved. Smooth enough for bikes, which are allowed. The path is 1.5 miles around and it is marked every 1/4 mile. My first loop around took longer because I stopped to take pictures. Second loop was to get the blood pumping. In addition to the walking/running/biking trail and playground, there are picnic tables and fishing is allowed. Dogs are also welcome. For me, the path through the woods along with the sight of water is the perfect combination to soothe my soul. I can't wait to go back. I just wish it was about 10 minutes closer to my house. I'd be there every day. read more

If you want to get away from the crowded park atmosphere then you have reached the right destination. Here at Oak Grove, you can: grill, fish, enjoy the playground, witness the sunset, take a scroll along the parkgrounds or sit on the bench and just take it all in! This park is nice to even hold an event here: wedding, birthday party etc. there is ample space for you to bring your own table/chairs or to have the event up for you. Plenty of shade. I went on a Saturday evening and it wasn't crowded at all. I think we just avoided the crowd because tents were still up. You will definitely want to come here over and over again.
