Ft. Eustis Aquatic Center is an indoor competition pool and adventure water park located on the Ft…read more Eustis Army base. You must be military personnel, family, or in my case a sanctioned event where your invited. First the adventure pool area is in the newer section of the building. It features a 30 ft, 146 ft long triple loop slide. There is also a shallow end for toddlers with a maximum depth of 3.5 ft. This area by far is the best thing about the center. Minimal parking is located in front of the building. During an event it is quickly overwhelmed and over flow parking that is not too far away must be utilized. The competition pool is located in the older section and dates back to possibly the late 50's and looks its age. The competition pool is 11 lanes and 25 yards in length. It feature a balcony that holds 450-500 spectators to view swimming meets. Often the spectators are over heated even in the middle of winter. The balcony is not a place that I would ever want to be, it's down right miserable. The pool is a FAST due to it's size and depth. My 10 year old son got his first SCY record for his club in this pool swimming the 100 yard Butterfly as an 8 year old. The largest swim meet of the year held at the facility is the SEVA 12&U Christmas Champs. Around 800+ swimmers from around Virginia attend the Prelim/Finals format meet. It is considered a mid season short course championship and tune up to Age Group Champs held in March. The Aquatic center has locker rooms, showers and private changing areas for men and women. The building also has a multi purpose room and concessions. When the pool is not in use it is open for active military to utilize for laps. Swimming lessons are also offered for both children and adults. The center can also be used for birthday parties. Everything about the place except for the adventure area is old, old old. The pool serves the military community as well the swimming community who hold meets. The adventure area is great for families to enjoy. However, with the age and obvious maintenance issues in the competition pool area a three for this review is probably a stretch.

The lifeguard is what I would call a pool Nazi. For the whole hour my 10 year old ended up crying on the sidelines because this guy treated her as if she was a 3 year old. He didn't even mention a swim test until we had 10 mins left to our hour slot.

This pool is Norfolk's newest recreational center and is a real beauty. For those outside the…read moreswimming community you would never know about the shortage of swimming pools this area has, but it's true. This new facility was a very welcome addition to Norfolk and the surrounding communities. The complex is almost a year old and looks it too. The building is a looker from the outside with all glass and clean lines. A really cool bronze statute greets you out front of a woman with long legs and arms stretched out. Parking is good, but not sure I would say great if they were really busy. One thing that will not be too much of an issue is this facility is not really set up for swim meets. Could they do a small one... YES! They even have a scoreboard. I really don't see it. Also a drawback is no exercise room that would have been a sweet enhancement. As you enter the check in desk is in front, a nice lobby with TV to the left and lockers to the right. Also to the left and down the corridor a bit is a large multi purpose room with kitchen. This was an important aspect of the facility to hold meetings and accommodate parties etc. The locker rooms are very small, with only two benches to change on. This was one of the missed opportunities I will speak to in this review. They had plenty lockers, but few stalls and a small showering area. However, I found them to be spic and span. Let's get to the exciting part. The pool is a six lane with a two story water slide that swirls you outside and back in and down into the pool. They also have a basketball hoop. I was impressed with pool and deck, it was really done nicely. There are blocks at the end of the lanes for diving starts. I am unsure if the length is in meters, or yards. The size of the pool was the biggest missed opportunity of the complex. An eight lane pool is standard for running swim meets. A six lane is completely inadequate to hold a swimming competition. There is a score board, but my assumption is not one meet has taken place. They most certainly had the land to expand. There is probably two acres out back. It will be interesting to see if this land is ever developed. The spectator area is first class. Just off the deck on three tiers. It is comfortable and parents can easily see there swimmers play, take lessons etc. This is something they gave some thought to and I score this high having seating just off the pool and close to children. The lifeguards that I encountered were approachable and nice to talk to. The evening that I attended a lifeguard not on duty was providing private lessons to a young swimmer. The guards have there own room which is state of the art with exam table and plenty of cabinet for storage. I also saw the must have defibrillator. I like the location of this aquatic center, especially in Norfolk where the greatest need was. The city had the foresight to seek the funding and got it built. However, the lack of a eight lane pool was just not smart at all! Compare what the City of Virginia Beach does at there recreational centers. Everyone is an eight lane competition pool. If your a resident of Norfolk you can get in for a discount, other pay more. Of course they have membership and I would recommend. Since they offer lessons parents should take notice of when classes are being offered to make sure the little one can swim. There is so much water in our community and programs like this are perfect to educate on water safety and have fun.

The day to day operation has a staff of city of NN employees. The location of the facility sets on the Newport News/Hampton border and is off the Mercury/Jefferson corridor close to the James River Bridge. The parking lot can easily accommodate many visitors, however when large swim meets are taking place it fills. The staff take great strides to keep the building clean and well maintained. The guards are all Red Cross certified and in my experience very competent and care about the safety of those that participant in their programs. The pool itself is a 50 meter competition pool with movable bulk heads for conversion to 25 yards (basically splitting the 50 in half). The pool for Short Course season (25 yards) keeps the bulkhead in the middle. The deck around pool has three rows of spectator seating. Visitors are NOT allowed to bring in food, or swim back packs inside the aquatic area. The pool features two 3 meter diving boards. Restrooms and locker rooms are available. As well deck showers are outside the locker rooms. Two year around clubs utilize the pool. The Coastguards Blue Devils and the SEVA Seahawks. At the times these clubs would conduct practice part of the pool would be closed off, but lanes would be made available for pass members etc. The building also offers a gym with a full basketball court, a daycare, multi-pourpose rooms for dance, yoga, etc. There is a room that offers a kitchen with sink, stove and refrigerator. A large under cover outside area features three basketball courts. You can rent out the multi-purpose rooms and pool for parties. Daily passes ($3-$5), punch cards ($19-$24), annual and collegiate passes ($50-$70) are available for both Newport News and non residents at an up charge. All of these prices in my experience are very reasonable. The facility itself is in the red every year. The city of NN subsidizes to a great degree which is wonderful for those that utilize this very nice aquatic facility. It would be hard to believe if you are a Newport News, or Hampton resident that you do not know about this facility. This is a major asset to not only the Newport News, but to Hampton Roads. This Aquatic Center offers the ONLY 50 meter pool used for Long Course competition. I encourage you to check it out if this is something that you, or family can utilize.
