Came here for dinner with a friend. The ambiance in here is so romantic with the candles on the table. The food we ordered was disappointing. The naan was not cripsy at all even though it looked like they had toasted it. The naan tasted good though. The chicken Tikka Masala we had was not very good. The chicken was not tender. We saw a lot of reviews about the chicken Momo so we had to try it out. I asked for a non-spicy sauce for the Momo and they forgot to bring it out to us! Forgetting things when you only have two other tables... that's not acceptable. The Momo was like a Chinese dumpling thing, but not as good. If you're on south side and having withdrawal from delicious Indian food, Mount Everest is definitely the place to go. It's a tad on the pricey side (around 11-15 bucks for a main dish, naan, and rice), but it tastes better than any other Indian food I've had in Berkeley. The atmosphere is also really nice, if quite formal - people don't dress up or anything, but it's primarily a sit down place with tables and waiters. Good for a date! I'm a big fan of the chicken koorma, but they also have a bunch of different options including more Nepalese stuff in addition to the classic tikka masala/saag/etc. I didn't care for the momos myself, but others have liked them. The restaurant was completely empty at 8 on a Friday night which was a bit weird. The wait was a bit long considering we were the only people there. Our waiter was pretty helpful explaining everything and helping us to order, but also a bit annoying. He saw us checking Yelp on our phones and started telling us that they just got a horrible Yelp review and how unfair it is. He was going on and on for a few minutes. I understand his pain but dude - we are already sitting in your restaurant, don't try to convince us its a worthy place. Mango lassy was super good (we even wanted to get a second one but the waiter advised us not to do it as we would be too full for food after it) My husband got a curry which he really liked, I got a mix of grilled chicken, fish, and shrimp on a skewer. I ordered the following: Navratna Korma - not bad Mattar Paneer -delicious gravy (a bit salty)! But only had exactly 4 small pieces of paneer in it! Garlic Naan - great! Paneer Naan - good texture, but I couldn't see nor taste any paneer Gulab Jamun - pretty good Overall, the food was good, but they must have been running low on paneer. I would have given this place 3 stars for the food, but they also took a long time to deliver. I was told it would take 45 - 60 minutes, but I ended up getting the food an hour and 15 minutes after I placed the order. Perhaps they were having an off night? I love this place. I have been coming here for a while (ever since the days it was called Tandoor Kitchen). The atmosphere is pretty basic, nothing special. They don't seem worried about decorations or anything but thats fine with me. I like their high ceilings. They have plenty of seating room, I think its two floors. The service is really good. The owner is a wonderful and very helpful person. The staff is efficient. I love their food! Its really good if you are looking for basic Indian food near UCB. Comparable to House of Curries. I always get their Chicken Tikka Masala with Naan and its wonderful. They make it really spicy since I am obsessed with spicy food. The mango lassi is to die for as well. The prices are pretty cheap. 3.5 stars, but I'll round it up to 4 stars since the food was SOOO good! My party and I came in with a http://restaurant.com coupon so we ordered a lot of food. Everything was delicious! I can't be as excited on the service, but more on that later. You must order the VEGGIE CHOW MIEN! I was surprised how great it was. I was expecting something very similar to Chinese Chow Mien, but BOY! was I wrong! First off, the noddles they use for the chow mien was spaghetti, the kind you would find in Italian restaurants. And, the best part was that they used a tomato based sauce instead of the typical soy sauce or garlic based one. Very different from any Chow Mien I've tried. The noodles didn't stick together because each strand was covered in a light mixture of the tomato sauce and a splash of oil (I can't quite but my finger on it, but it's not olive, corn, coconut, soybean, etc. oil). The noodles aren't heavy like Italian pasta, but at the same time, they're very filling. This was possibly the best dish out of the four that we ordered. CHICKEN VINDALOO. The boyfriend really enjoyed this one, but I think it needed to be spicier. We went for a "Medium" on the Vindaloo and I barely tasted any spice. Go for "Spicy" if you like spicy Indian food like I do. The chicken was really nice and tender though--you can tell it was quality meat. LAMB CURRY. This was not bad, but not great--partially because I felt that the lamb was a bit too tough for my liking. PANEER TIKKA MASALA. The tikka masala here was much creamier and less tomato-y than what I'm use to. Very hearty and thick. The paneer on the other hand? Sigh. A disappointment. I think we should have gone with a chicken or lamb tikka masala instead. The paneer looked and tasted too much like tofu, meaning cubed and bland. No flavor at all. GARLIC NAAN. YUM! It was also glazed in butter..garlic and butter..what a great combination! We also ordered two bowls of rice to eat with the curry. They came in large bowls, and I think one bowl is enough to share between two people. Pieces of flaxseed were in the rice so be careful if you have an allergy or don't want seeds stuck between your teeth. Now, service. WOW. They are SLOOooooOOOOW! We had to wait over 30 minutes for our food to arrive. At one period, at possibly the 20 minute mark, we looked around, and no one, no table had food. Everyone was waiting to be served. Also, when we asked for our food to go, the waiter placed the rice and curry in one box. BIG mistake. The rice will mix with the curry and become soggy. As far as Indian cuisine goes, this place is not bad. I guess it's more considered Tibetan cuisine, but it certainly has many Indian staples on the menu. Awesome food, horrible take-out experience. Lured by their 20% Grand Opening discount, I decided to order a large take-out: one formosa appetizer, one Chicken Tikkia Misala, and one order of nan. All together, it was about $10-$11 with the discount. When I got home, I realized one fatal flaw: None of it came with rice! I called them, confirming that there wasn't a mistake, and well, it wasn't: the tub of rich, creamy Tikka Masala that is nothing without rice just didn't come with any. No, the rice was $2 extra. So I was forced to make my own... Honestly, having Tikka Masala not include rice is like having a BLT not include bread. The second time I went, I decided to order the same Tikka Masala while asking the cashier whether it came with rice. He said it didn't, but I could order the lunch special (comes with nan, lentils, small salad, and RICE) even though it was 8:00pm. I thought he was being kind... until he "forgot" the 20% discount. I had to remind him of it, but since he was giving me the special, I said that $8 was fine. When I got home, I realized the second fatal flaw: The lunch special reduces the amount of Tikkia Masala by about 80%. That's right... I was given about one-fifth the amount of sauce - which is what matters. The rice, lentils, and nan was essentially REPLACING the missing sauce, not adding to the dish. And now I feel horrible enough to write this review. These two experiences are unfortunate, because the food is actually quite good. The formosas were crisp and at the right balance of spice and texture, the nan was hot, fluffy, and went well with the sauce, and the Tikka Masala was smooth and rich. Although I don't really have any other Nepali restaurants to compare this place to, I can say that the food here tastes delicious. The highlights that we'd usually order were the chicken momos, which we would all share together, and the lamb vindaloo. I've been to a lot of Indian restaurants in Berkeley, and this is by far my favorite. If you come here you MUST try the GARLIC NAAN!! Their honey naan is pretty good too if you don't mind sweet naan with salty curry. When we come here we like to get the chicken tikki masala (always a must), lentils and potato, and vegetable curry dish. We've had the pan fried seafood/kabob dishes before and they were kinda dry. The service is great and the waiters are friendly. There was a time when the food would take forever to come out so we would bring an Ipad or a book, but the last time we came here it was okay. Hit or miss with that and the wait time has zero correlation with the amount of people in the restaurant, so I'd just bring something to do just in case. read more

I was intrigued by the Nepali variation on Indian food. I am always a fan of Indian, but have a hard time finding restaurants here that rival the Indian that can be found in London. This was no exception. The food was good enough. The papadam was crisp, but with miniscule portions of dip. We tried the regular and cherry/cranberry naan, both of which were good. Our main dishes were on the bland side, and the rice was a bit wetter than I like my basmati. The decor was where I experienced major disappointment, and it may have influenced my perception of the food. Ethnic restaurants are in a great position to showcase their culture and I felt the opportunity was not being capitalized on. The walls are incompletely painted, drawing attention to electrical fixtures and unfinished trim. Pictures were oddly distributed, and overall there was a shabby impression. Are here with my sister since I was looking for new Indian restaurants to try and she suggested this out of another one . I needed a relaxing place , it was a bit small and the waitresses were able to keep our eyes on us but that was all good they were very beautiful. The place got tons of Uber eats orders I could hear that keeping them busy I felt bad for them, but in berkley I under stand the need. The Taj Mahal beer the waitress suggested was delicious my first lager it helped cool down the spicy flavor of my fish curry which was so hot next time I will have to get less hot since spicy made me cough . Finished the rice like crazy, and got more for work the next day . Even the washroom reminded me of Bangladesh which was nostalgic , I'd return for the great food and those lovely waitresses. Marlin and I have been here a couple of times so these are our usual dishes: -chicken tikka masala with garlic naan: really creamy and delicious. Located on an unassuming corner of Telegraph, you'll find this elegant and dimly lite rest., Mount Everest. Oh the irony. Inside you'll find romantic and pleasant decor that heartily offers a sense of warmth; not quite a cave, this restaurant seems like it could be a great escape from rainy weather. The large windows allows one to peer outside and watch the rain work its magic in the oh so long CA drought. For the food, the tender meat really allows me to savor the taste without having to work so hard at chewing. The reasonable portions gives room for the delicious mango Lassi, tasty coconut chicken and chicken curry. Although, we could've done without the vegetable samusa, garlic naan, and the vegetable curry as they were mediocre at best and spoiled the extra room in our belly. After months of searching, I think my man and I might have found our go-to Indian ordering place. I'm giving Mount Everest 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 bc the food we've had has been really good. They have a ton of great vegetarian options (Veg Tiki Masala and Korma are sooooo good!), the nan is good, and they have online ordering so I don't have to bother talking to an actual human being. Delivery is usually around 45-60 minutes, but easy. The price is pretty good too - on the cheap to normal priced range for Indian delivery. My main gripes that hold this place back? 1-The dishes don't come with rice (so don't forget to order it!) and 2- The plastic containers they serve the delivery in have got to be the cheapest possible option. Seriously, it's the weakest kind of plastic container I've ever seen, and it's the kind of material that makes me wonder if it's going to leach out chemicals that cause cancer. I really wish they would use something better quality. One time our order actually arrived with one of the meals completely spilled all in the delivery bag bc the POS plastic container had broken. SO make sure you CHECK YOUR DELIVERY ORDER. But, the upside is they very quickly and with no hassle brought us a replacement. But.... like I said, it tastes good ;-) read more

This place is amazing! Definitely my favorite affordable Nepalese restaurant. Their service is fast and friendly and their momos are wonderful! You have to get the lunch special! It's every day from until 3 and it comes with your choice of entree, chickpeas, salad, and plenty of beautiful naan (roti for vegans) all for $10! The selection of entrees available is awesome and there are so many great things to choose from. Everyone there is very friendly and attentive. The waiters ask if you are vegan when you order a vegetarian entree to make sure and accommodate for you. Their Aloo Mattar is my favorite and their roti and chickpeas are so tasty. I can't say much about the ambiance of the actual restaurant itself because I got delivery. It's been bad weather week in Berkeley--the type of weather that soaks your socks after three seconds of being outside. My lazy ass was craving something warm and delivered... Mt. Everest definitely fit the bill. I ordered chicken tikka ($8.00), plain naan ($1.25), and garlic naan ($1.99), while the roomie ordered chicken curry ($6.99) and honey naan (1.99). Delivery is free with a $20 minimum. I was worried that they would take too long because of the rain, but delivery was speedy at 25 minutes! The chicken tikka is the BEST I've had in Berkeley! The sauce was rich and thick, while the chicken was all white meat and had no bones. It also didn't have that nasty layer of oil found in House of Curries' tikka. Oh, and did I mention it was PIPING hot? The first bite actually burned my tongue! The naan was warm and chewy, a little thicker which I liked. The garlic naan had chunks of garlic and herbs which didn't stand out as much as I would have thought. I usually can't finish two naans and a whole order of curry, but everything was so delicious that I was definitely part of the clean plate club that night. After trying a number of Indian restaurants in Berkeley I tried Mount Everest and now it's the only place I go. All of the curries (mostly vegetarian) I've had have been great, especialy for the ~$8/dish prices! The samosas and pakoras have also been delicious every time as well. Though the curries are better than others I've had in Berkeley, the reason I keep wanting to come back, though, is probably that the place is inviting and the people are so incredibly friendly that it just makes me happy to be there. Dumpling itself was spiced so the dipping sauce (which was also quite good) was a complement, not a necessity. - Dal Bhat Tarkari Very tasty but got 3 different containers for it with no explanation - maybe the dish is a platter but the online menu doesn't make it clear. All 3 containers were very good. - Khasi Ko Msu A really outstanding goat stew with bone-in pieces (for better flavor). The curry/sauce used in this dish far outshone the others in terms of flavor profile and brightness. Really good and a standout dish. I've tried many many Indian places in Berkeley, from UC Berkeley area to West side. This place is quite close to where I live and decided to give it a try on a Sunday evening. Environment: The place is nicely decorated with Indian accessories (and not TOO heavily). Would recommend here for a date night or a special outing. Food: As usual, I ordered my chicken tikka masala and garlic naan bread (which others recommended on Yelp). The chicken tikka masala seemed to be really small in a round tin bowl, but it's actually a lot more than what it appears to be. The curry is solid, but the chicken is slightly hard to chew and does not give me the "oomph" factor as other places such as Indian Flavors Express (probably my favorite Indian place in Berkeley) did. Maybe it'll taste better if I did not order the dish in mild spice. Was also disappointed with the naan. It's hot but find it to be soggy. I like my naan fluffy and crisp. Price: It's slightly more expensive than the usual Indian restaurant in UC Berkeley (around +15%) but I find it totally acceptable given the nicer environment. Service: Good! Okay, so this is my 2nd review for this restaurant. Which I thought highly of up until my visit again yesterday, left my friend and I very disappointed. First off, just as my first review stated, the customer service is HORRIBLE. Starting this off with prayers and well wishes for any family members that may have been involved in the Nepal earthquake - I know a few of the servers had recently moved here from Nepal so I can only imagine. I'm a typical white girl - I grew up thinking Olive Garden was my favorite restaurant. Then I met Indian food. WOW. And Mount Everest. Now I'm absolutely hooked. By far, Mount Everest is my all time favorite restaurant. My boyfriend and I have made this place a tradition - birthdays, date night, friends in town. And if we're on a budget, we use the Restaurants.com $25 coupon to help shave off the bill and we end up splurging more. The servers are always as sweet as can be and the ambiance of the restaurant is perfect for groups or couples - plenty of comfortable tables and window views. I haven't been up to the second floor but I think they have a very large space for banquets or groups. MUST ORDER (and they give you levels of spice to choose - spicy is always perfect, not all that powerful): Anything lamb (tikka masala, rack of lamb) the meat is tender and perfect. Shrimp tandoori comes on a sizzling platter of onions and peppers. Palak paneer and Mattur Paneer (peas are my favorite). Chicken tikka masala is always a good go-to (plenty of meat pieces). Two naans - plain and onion (also tried the honey naan for the first time last time and was very impressed). Fish vindaloo is rich and perfect too. Oh and the rice palau is BOMB - I love the toasted almond and veggies in it. You seriously cannot go wrong at this place. I want to preface this review by saying that the food deserves a 4 star rating but the service deserves a 2 star rating so I gave an average of 3 stars. The service is like Jeckyll and Hyde, before you sit down the service is horrible but when you are seated the service is excellent and so is the food. No one acknowledges you when you enter the restaurant and if there is a long wait, no staff member says anything and the only acknowledgement you get is from other bewildered people waiting and not knowing what's going on. I've seen people leave while waiting for a table. All they need is a clip board for people to sign their names, number in the party and time they arrived. They have a big menu of Indian and Nepalese food and everything is done very well. The chicken tikka is creamier than most places. If you miss out on the lunch deals and want to get a combo, get the Daal Bhat Tarkari which is 2 curries a veg and one of your choice, lentils, rice, naan and rice pudding, it's the best value, gives a a lot of variety and delicious as well. read more
