My first time eating authentic Indian food and it was a great first time experience. As I walked inside, the ambiance of the place really captured my attention; very dim, ornate, serene and old fashioned in a cultural way. We ordered 1 order of the samosa plate. The outside was nice and crisp and right when you bite into it, your mouth is greeted with a soft fluffy potato filling inside. Really really good! Especially when complemented with the red and green sauce provided. Expecting that this restaurant serve big portions like most of the restaurants I've been to, I decided to share 1 order of chicken tikka masala with a side of rice with my friend. I was surprised to see how small 1 order is; only fit to feed one person to be honest. Right when I tasted the tender chicken coated with the creamy sauce, I regretted that I did not order my own. This place has the Best momo in town...Whenever I want momo and other Nepali dishes for my family events like Baby shower, birthdays etc I do catering from them. I've been to/eaten from Everest a handful of times and I hate that it's the least pleasant experience that prompted me to review the place. The food has been solid in all of my previous experiences, but I recently ordered takeout and the food was bland! Never in my life have I had Indian food (albeit request as mild) and had to add my own spice. I ordered the paneer tikka masala and chicken chow mein, and the flavoring on both (mostly the tikka masala) left something to be desired. I ended up adding cayenne pepper to my food at home. Ordered my bf some takeout from here since he was in his finals. Delivery was only $2 with I think it was a $25 minimum. Got the veggie chow mein, chicken momo, tandoori chicken, basmati rice and it came with some free crackers. Boyfriend said the veggie chow mein was delicious along with the chicken momo. I was pretty impressed with this place when I walked in. The setting and environment is really nice. In addition, my friend quickly noted, that it felt muuuch cleaner than House of Curries and Naan N Curry near UC Berkeley campus. Immediately after walking in and engulfing yourself in the savory spices, you feel relaxed in the dimmed light and candlelit tables. The waiters and waitresses were very friendly and personable. I ordered a ~$7 chicken vindaloo (of course...) with plain naan ($1.25). They give you the option of choosing your level of spiciness: mild, medium, spicy, or extra spicy. I was suggested spicy by the waitress and went with it. It wasn't spicy. Not. At. All. If they call spicy spicy, I wonder what the hell mild tastes like--or medium for that matter! This "spicy" level was NOTHING! Anyway, enough on my spiciness rant. The naan here is incredible! Best naan I've had in the Bay Area. Before, I didn't know what good naan tastes like, but now I do! It seems they buttered the top or glazed it....whatever they did to it, it was delicious. Out of all the places around Berkeley campus, Mt Everest is probably the best place to get Indian food if you start having any cravings. It is one of the few sit down Indian food places that is very clean and quiet. Every time I have come here I was always seated right away and immediately brought water. The servers are all very attentive and take the time to explain the menu to you if are confused. The portions they give are very filling for a good price. Recommend: The naan: I have had the plain naan and the garlic naan and they are both amazing. The garlic one is definitely worth getting. It is fluffy with a slight crunch on the inside. There is a slight garlic taste that is not overwhelming. The chicken tikka marsala: really rich creamy sauce and large chunks of chicken. The sauce is very well flavored and perfectly spiced. It goes great with the naan. There are three spicy levels. I always get the medium spicy and while I can take heat, near the end I was definitely working up a little bit of a sweat. The lamb wrap: I really great, marinated lamb wrapped in naan. The lamb is very tender and the wrap has some tomato and onions in it that compliment the lamb very well. The lamb saag: The lamb is super flavorful. I wish they gave more lamb with the spinach, and the spinach was cooked to an almost mush. I am not sure if it was suppose to be like that but I wish they didn't cook it as much. They offer a lunch menu too. The prices are great and they give you so much food. I got the lunch special chicken tikka marsala and it came with naan, rice, salad, and garbanzo beans. It is more than enough food to get you full. I have also had the lamb wrap lunch special. It does not come with any of the sides but it is a much larger portion of food which makes up for the lack of sides. We like this restaurant and want to love it more, but they have consistently got our order wrong. Tonight we ordered Chicken Tikka Masala medium. It is mild and bland. I asked for their special orange hot sauce. I got cheap ass Shiracca from a bottle. I could go on about other issues, but I will not be coming back until the owner calls me back and assures me that he has trained his staff to understand English and can guarantee that they get my order right or I am sending it back to the kitchen. Let me preface this review by saying I love Indian food. I love naan, curry, Biryani, lassi and everything in between. And I have to say out of all the places in Berkeley I've been too Mount Everest is one of my favorites. First, they deliver! Their food was the only thing that got me through 2 full weeks of holing up at home studying for finals. Second, they have such a great selection of curries. First of all, I am from Nepal.I went for a lunch with my aunt here. We ordered Lunch Thali which had rice, meat curry, veg and desert. Also naan and mango lassi. While eating, I found there was a hair in the meat curry. I called the waiter. Since the waiter was also Nepali, I told her that there is a hair in the curry. In Nepali language, she told "one second, I will figure that out". Our entire stay there, she did not even come to our table to tell us what exactly happened. Pasal ma Nepali ayo bhanera ghatiya service dina ta hunna ni(Translation: If nepali comes to your restaurant, doesn't mean that you should give bad service). I would have given this place 4 stars, but the last time I was here I found 2 pieces of hair in my food. I told my waitress and at first she denied that it was hair, which was obviously not mine (and very obviously male hair). I was displeased with the way she dealt with the complaint and didn't bother to apologize that it was in my food in the first place. After expressing my dissatisfaction she finally offered to replace the rice. Otherwise, I found the food was tasty. Definitely seems to be one of the better Indian Restaurants in the area. The naan is absolutely delicious here. It's so warm and fluffy I could honestly eat that alone! I do think the food could be a bit hotter. When the plates come out the food is warm at best and I tend to like my meals hot. Yum Yum Yum! Mount Everest's food is flavorful, fresh and crafted of good quality ingredients. The menu has ample choices for both meat eaters and vegetarians, and they even have organic meat and produce in some of their dishes. The quality of ingredients and subtlety of the spicing is several steps up from many of the surrounding Indian or Pakistani places---these folks have put real craft into their food offerings, even the rice was amazingly prepared with a dash of spice. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and always smiling. Perfectly prepared food wtih serious flavor and not at all greasy! Mount Everest is one of the best Indian places I've been to at berkeley. I've only been to two other Indian restaurants (Biryani and House of curries), but this one definitely stood out. Biryani house was good, especially the biryani (fried rice) they serve, but as far as curry goes, I have to give it to Mount Everest. It tasted very authentic even though I never had authentic indian food. I ordered their malai kofta and it was just flat out delicious. I also ordered their naan, and it was probably the best naan I had out of the three Indian restaurants I've been to. The naan was just so fluffy! I just wanted to keep eating it. You have to try it to know what I'm talking about! The place is nicely set up with nice drapes and curtains and as far as cleanliness goes, it's pretty clean; they recently remodeled it. However, one complaint that I have to say is, one of the waiter there is rather creepy.. I ate there with a friend (vina - indian connoisseur) one afternoon and that creepy waiter kept looking at us eat and when we ordered he seemed all sly and stuff. He was like talking in such a low voice..and being all quiet and stuff. He also seemed like he was creeping on us from the shadows, and whenever he came to serve us he seemed to move and talk very slowly, lingering at our table. He is just creepy in general..so watch out when you go. Also! my friend iris, went there last week to get some to curry from Mt. The food quality has gone down and the chicken tikka masala has hardly any chicken in it. The tikka masala was really bland and buttery and the samosas weren't as good as I remember either. They offered this free almond/coconut ice cream but it was a stale piece of shave iced and it was too hard to eat and not good. I don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon. read more

This might be the best Indian food I've ever had. And every time I'm in Berkeley, you can count on me eating here. I actually just got back from eating here with a few friends and decided to write a review as the taste is still fresh in my mouth. I've only been here for lunch and have never been disappointed. Their lunch special includes a small portion of salad, four slices of naan, a small portion of rice, a type of garbanzo bean dish and your choice of curries listed. My favorite would have to be the chicken tikki masala. I've ventured out to try the chicken curry and the lamb curry, but I think sticking with the chicken tikki masala is a good choice. All this for $7.99!! It's a steal I tell you! You don't even need to get garlic naan. Trust me on this one, their regular naan is just amazing with the perfect combination of crispy and soft. Their chicken tikki masala? Chicken is tender. Nice small bits of white meat covered in tangy creamy sauce. When I said "spicy" I was really expecting spicy, but on my palette it was more of a medium. It was the right amount of spice to bring out the flavors of the curry. This place is really just average. I love Indian food - I really found my love after coming to Berkeley and being able to try so many different foods. There are only a couple places around the campus area and I always get the same thing when I go to an Indian restaurant - Chicken Tikki Masala and a plain Naan. My roommate and I decided to come by after getting our nails done because we're just like that. It used to be Tandoor Kitchen which I heard was really good, but this new restaurant - I didn't know what to expect. The service was pretty good until we wanted to pay. We were talking to other people who came to get take out, but we had finished out dishes and were just kind of sitting there for a while. They did fill our waters whenever it seemed it was empty.There is a girl server there that doesn't really speak English which was awkward when we asked her what this soup thing that we got when sitting down was. The ambiance was great. I could tell that the people in the kitchen were Indian or Nepali which was comforting. I thought that the servers were good as well. The place looks nice and there is quite a bit seating since there is a 2nd floor as well. The prices are definitely affordable. The portions are a bit smaller than the portions at the other 2 near campus. Then again, my roommate and I were on a "diet" while eating this so we kind of didn't pay too much attention to how much was actually in the bowl. It just seemed less than the other two places. Yesterday I truly realized that bamboo, when prepared right, has a distinct flavor. Their monthly special Nepalese lentil stew tasted exactly like only one thing I've ever had before: Chinese lamb snail noodle soup! Now there was no snail and no lamb in this delicious stew - it was definitely the bamboo. Mount Everest, however you are preparing your bamboo that is different from everyone else except that one Chinese place, please carry on; it is so unique and tasty. And your plump black-eyed peas and spicy brown sauce don't hurt the dish either. Honestly, everything here was great. The best Nepalese I've had by far, and I lived in Boulder, CO - Nepalese food central - for eight years. The dal bhat tarkari was like a North Indian version of thali - lots of little plates and bowls with different stews and curries and puddings in them. The lamb curry had falling-apart, tender, deep burgundy-brown meat that was unmistakably lamb, not mystery meat as it so often is in curry. Everything on the platter was different. We were told it was too small for four people to share, but thumbed our noses at that rule and shared anyway. Chicken momos, looking just like XLB with their cute twirled tops, carried their spicy orange sauce with aplomb. I ordered worst with the malai kofta, which really was silly of me since it's an Indian dish. Nothing was wrong with it, but it had no spice to it and was immediately forgotten on my quest for everything else. Except maybe that weird pink shredded coconut naan... what was up with that? There's a convoluted history of this restaurant changing hands through co-workers and a cab driver, and a family tree would be pretty interesting to look at. For the time being, though, you can make do with the very, very delicious food in this fine-looking restaurant. Mount Everest actually serves Nepalese *and* Indian food, and as good as the Indian food is -- and it is very, very good -- the Nepalese is even better. The gracious staff will guide you through the choices which, upon arrival, will probably look somewhat familiar to some Indian dishes but add an ingredient here and subtract one there, and the differences are apparent and a welcome change. A good chunk of the menu is made up of vegetarian dishes and lunch specials, and a surprising variety of bread and rice offerings. (Honey naan, anyone?) Service is attentive without being fawning, and personal enough that the owner even came out to say hello. Mount Everest is located on the east end of Telegraph (boy, that's an odd sentence to type!), so parking can be tricky, but it's not so close to campus that it's impossible; we grabbed a street spot next to the auto garage across the way and walked maybe thirty yards at most. I was really happy to find this place during Memorial Day weekend, since most places were closed. The location is right on Telegraph, but kind of tucked away from the buzz of campus. The decor on the inside is very modern-ethnic, and the kitchen is visible from the seats - which I think always gives a pretty nice touch to the atmosphere. The food is surprisingly very good - for an Indian place that is primarily run by non-Indians. My favorite is the chicken tikka masala, which, compared to House of Curries, Na'an and Curry, and Indian Flavors Express, is sooo much better. The sauce is just so creamy, spicy, flavorful and addictive that you just can't stop dipping your na'an and scooping up all that deliciousness. The na'ans are pretty good as well. The garlic na'an was my favorite - so soft, warm and herby. There was also a na'an infused with coconut, pine nuts and mango that was very delicious - a nice blend of sweet and savory that worked well with the creamy dishes. The matter paneer is my favorite of the vegetarian dishes - it has green peas, homemade cheese cooked in a spicy cream sauce. Every bite gives you a journey of different flavors. The lamb curry is pretty good, but a bit strong for my taste. If you like lamb, then this is the dish for you. I'm thrilled that I've finally had a chance to eat here, but ecstatic over the fact that Mt. Everest lies within a stone's throw to my place. SmoothC and I ordered the samosas smothered with chickpeas and yogurt, the chicken tikka masala, aloo gobi, and garlic naan. We went because of a restaurant.com coupon given to us as a gift and it seemed like a good deal....spend $30 and receive $15 off. We went for dinner and my husband ordered an 'all in one' meal that included rice, naan, yogurt, lentils and chicken. I ordered a black lentil entree, rice and I asked for a side dish of spinach. (I was appreciative I didn't have to order an entire entree of the spinach). Anyway, the staff is quite friendly and accommodating, however the food on the other hand, is awful. My husband's chicken was undercooked and rubbery. And the lentils I had, well, more like prison food. I came across some hard pebble like object and stopped eating. My boyfriend and I came in with a Groupon deal, ready to try this place for the first time. We were seated pretty quickly, but service was slow after that. It took an unbearably long time to have our orders taken and have our food brought out to us. This would have been acceptable had the food been good. Unfortunately, it just wasn't up to snuff. Most of our dishes were flavorless and bland, low on seasoning or spice, or just unbalanced. We tried the momos, we tried the curries, we tried the naan. Nothing was worth ordering again, or even finishing the first time around. I think the only reason we ate it was because we were starving after waiting so long for our food. The ambiance here also isn't great. It's not intimate, it's not romantic. It seems a little thrown together, to be honest. Again, something that I wouldn't mind overlooking if the food wasn't so bad. We were unhappy with our experience, and especially disappointed after eating at other better Indian and Nepalese eateries in Berkeley. We won't be coming back any time soon. read more

We must of ordered the wrong dishes as I really wanted to like this restaurant. I got a shrimp dish that was not on the menu but came recommended by our waiter. Apparently it was last month's special. The dish was overwhelmed with onions and lacked the shrimp I was being charged for. It tasted like an Asian dish and steep at $13. We also got the Khasi Ko Masu (goat meat in curry sauce) which wasn't anything to rave about. Skip the chai tea as it's very watered down and doesn't come with refils. This was my first time to this restaurant, and my first time having Nepali food (I have however, had Indian cuisine before) and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I set a 5pm reservation for myself and a friend, so I caught them just after opening for the dinner crowd. The interior was clean, the music was cultural, and I could see it being dinner spot in the later evening. The restaurant actually looks like it belongs in San Francisco rather than the edge of Telegraph. The waitress was polite and knowledgeable when I asked her to help me decide on Nepali dishes, since I really wanted to stick to foods I've never had before. She even joked around with us at the table, which I think is a good sign of quality customer service I had the Khajur Shake (date shake w/ vanilla flavoring) for a beverage; Papadi Chaat for the appetizer; Goat Curry, Garlic Naan, Basmati Rice for the entree; Gulab Jamuns for dessert. The Khajur Shake was delicious, like a sweeter, less milky version of a vanilla shake, but the flavor was also a little heady. I would recommend sipping it slowly if you've never had one before. The Papadi Chaat was an interesting creation: thin crispy bread, topped with a potato, tomato, onion, mint, tamarind sauce mixture with just a hint of spiciness. All soaking in a plate of a juice of some sort. I knew that it would be packed with flavor but I was still overwhelmed by it. To their credit, they blended the mint flavor incredibly well because I enjoyed it despite having a distaste for mint in my food. The Goat Curry was phenomenal in my opinion. There were a lot of little bones in the meat (I guess goats have small bones? News to me) but it was tender, well cooked, and flavorful. I would say goat is close to lamb in appearance and texture, but has a flavor all its own. The curry was tasty over rice, and with the garlic naan. I didn't have the regular naan here but the garlic was good enough that I will only order it the next time I go. The only downside to the Goat Curry was the strip of fat that accompanied almost every piece of meat. I can deal with eating around a bone, but peeling off a strip of fat (surprisingly easy to peel off though) while trying to separate meat from bone was a little distracting. The Gulab Jamuns was better than expected based on the look. It looks like two cornbread balls soaking in oil. The reality is that it is two cornbread balls topped with very fine coconut shavings (I think) soaking in a light syrup. By this time I was stuffed, but I ate half of one anyway and realized that it might be too sweet for me at that point. But the taste and texture was right up my alley. Had I not stuffed myself I probably would have finished both without hesitation. All in all only a few things detracted from my experience, but it's worth a 4 star rating. read more

Are here with my sister since I was looking for new Indian restaurants to try and she suggested this out of another one . I needed a relaxing place , it was a bit small and the waitresses were able to keep our eyes on us but that was all good they were very beautiful. The place got tons of Uber eats orders I could hear that keeping them busy I felt bad for them, but in berkley I under stand the need. The Taj Mahal beer the waitress suggested was delicious my first lager it helped cool down the spicy flavor of my fish curry which was so hot next time I will have to get less hot since spicy made me cough . Finished the rice like crazy, and got more for work the next day . Even the washroom reminded me of Bangladesh which was nostalgic , I'd return for the great food and those lovely waitresses. I have never liked Indian/Nepalese food, ever. But last night I decided to try out something new. I ordered here for take outt: 2 chicken tikka masala and 2 garlic naan. My food was ready in 30 minutes and packaged really well, which is really important to me because I don't like too strong of a food smell pervading the air! The chicken tikka masala was really creamy, rich, and a perfect blend of spice and smooth. The naan was a bit too chewy for my taste, but the garlic favor was really potent and delicious! My favorite Indian Restaurant in Berkeley! Get the garlic naan bread, chicken tikka marsala, and an order of rice! Yum! The food is very very delicious and delicate. Yes. Thank you groupon. Yes. They spice our food like we aren't white, and everybody that works there is not only super friendly, but also super beautiful. The portions were perfect, and the price was right. I will be back! Their lunch specials look like such a great deal. The only thing i didn't enjoy was the strong smell of incense through my entire meal. I wouldn't say it affected the taste, but it was very heavy. A 3.5 stars establishment in my books. Here's what we had: Vegi Samosa Chicken Chilly (Nepali Special) Chicken Tiki Masala Lamb Curry Chowmein (Nepali Special) Naan/Garlic Naan The only thing that stood out and I would order again is the Lamb Curry which was super tasty and maybe the Tiki Masala, it was a little too nutty and creamy for me. The flavors of the chicken chilly dish reminded me of chinese sweet and sour chicken with some spicy heat at the end. As for the chow mein, it reminded good al dente spaghetti noodles stir fried in curry spices, nothing to rave about although it was good. Service was attentive. I think it's worth a try if you get a coupon from restaurant.com and I would just stick to the Curry and Naan. read more
