I enjoyed my banh mi roll, although I wish I had ordered it as a bowl, I think the pork is not the best choice for a sushi roll. But the shrimp tempura worked perfectly as a roll, I guess at least for me, seafood and/or just veggies go better with nori than pork. My most important thing to say, I think, is that this is not a sushi restaurant and you will be disappointed if you come thinking that it is. I have been to Motomaki a few times since they opened. The first visits were not very successful for me. I tried to get sushi-like items and they had actual regular size rolls in the beginning. They were not particularly good. Now it appears that the "sushi style" ingredients in the big burrito form and the Asian fusion mixed bowls are what is on the menu. If you go thinking "modern casual mix of asian influenced ingredients" served in large format and priced as such, you'll be fine. I had the shrimp tempura bowl today and though it had a bit too much sauce on it for my taste, it was quite interesting. The shrimp and asparagus tempura were nicely fried and not greasy at all. The sriracha aioli had a good tang. The veggies and the rice were fine. The other sauce was a bit sweet. The tuna mix was tasty and fresh. In the past, I found the raw fish here not fresh enough. We two wee (okay, fine, he's tall but I'm not) hungry lads had four sushi burritos delivered because we thought they were smaller than they actually were. And we ate them all! Bottom line: you can tell that Motomaki puts effort into the texture and taste as the ingredients come together. I had a Mean Green roll, and there was so much umami and crunch and richness and leafiness and - you know, that excellent edamame texture - and soy-ness and maybe even sesame-ness all at once. Combine all that with the usual, delightful sticky rice chew and the nice seaweed wrap, and it's as utterly craveable as any steak. But if you need meat or something more explicitly like it, the Tall Lad reports that the impossible roll and one of the chicken ones were excellent as well. I also got a spicy tuna thing, and it was creamy and yummy and balanced (and I saw this as a person who usually hates mayo). Delivery to Longmont was super swift; would definitely order again! I heard this place was a sister restaurant of HAPA sushi, which features risqué over the top sushi rolls. This place instead serves chipotle-esque burrito sushi rolls or sushi bowls. This place is great, especially for a Japanese food lover like me. I typically get the mochiko chicken bowl, which features Chinese restaurant like chicken with some Japanese slaw, avocados, sprouts and some sort of sauce. You can add things atop your base orders, I typically get the tempura asparagus and jalapeños added. I love the mochiko bowl with a huge wad of wasabi and soy sauce on the side. There's something so simplistic about this place, perhaps it's the idea that you are just eating condiments on rice. But the quality of the food speaks for itself, its fresh, its crisp and it's flavorful. One of my favorite lunch spots when I'm in Boulder, and now one of my favorite restaurants in the Golden area. Yummy this place is so so good! It is so fresh and healthy tasting. I love sushi and can't believe it took me so long to try this place out. You have the option to create your own bowl or burrito or they have ones you can choose from. I picked the shrimp tempura burrito and the girl working the register said that's the most popular one and I can definitely see why. I also decided to add cilantro because cilantro is good on literally anything. Everything came out to about $13 and we got the burrito to go. It took maybe 10 minutes to wait in line, order, and get our food. So it's a great place to grab a quick lunch or dinner. When we got home to eat the burrito I couldn't believe how big it was! Our plan was to share it and then eat some leftovers from the night before but just a half filled me up. It was great. The girl at the register told me to sign up for their reward program which I did as soon as I finished the burrito because I know I'll be coming back there more often. The rewards program is free to sign up and you get a free entree on your birthday month for up to $16 value. That's an incredible deal! Nice space, good restaurant design, and the staff are doing the best they can. Ingredients are pretty fresh and tasty. But unfortunately kind of a mess. The sushi burritos collapsed immediately when you took a bite. Flavors were weak. The nori doesn't bite through, so it just becomes a long piece when you bite it, and you have to choke the whole thing down at once or pull the uneaten half of it out of your mouth and try to somehow distribute it among the other bites. There were bits of aluminum foil you had to be careful to avoid in the wrapping, and the restaurant was pretty dirty. Trash all over. I appreciated the different recycling/composting bins, but you still use a ton of packaging to eat a burrito in this place. Maybe just a couple pieces of waxy paper to wrap them up and call it a day? The owner should go check out Sushi Burrito in salt lake. That place isn't super clean but the sushi burritos are way more edible on a flavor and practicality level. read more

I always order the shrimp tempura bowl with half greens half rice. The greens are always fresh and light and crispy. That always indicates great food prep and storage conditions for me. All the food prep workers there are so nice and efficient. The mochi ice cream is delicious especially the orange and strawberry! If it's a bit too spicy I sub the spicy tuna for regular tuna. We got the Korean (kalbi) and one of the Poke bowls. Everything about this restaurant was well done. The service was fast, the interior was clean, and the flavors were good. This is a good restaurant to go to if you have people who like Asian food but can't agree on one specific cuisine to eat. The value was average to poor- the bowls were $12 on average and the portion sizing was smaller than you would get at most ethnic places. That being said, the flavors were there. I've been having crazy cravings for poke bowls all summer and have been able to satisfy said cravings while traveling to some very international cities, but now that I'm back home...that gnawing feeling is back! Luckily, there are a couple of poke places in Boulder-- Motomaki being one of them. Motomaki is like a loosely (very loosely) Japanese- inspired Chipotle. The menu offers a variety of options that one would find on a menu for Americanized "sushi" for people who need deep-frying and multiple sauces to enjoy sushi. Why would you need to add tempura veggies, bacon, sour cream, and aioli onto a poke bowl?! Blasphemy. After staring at the menu for ten minutes, I finally picked my poison: the shrimp tempura bowl. At least it had spicy tuna, cucumber, and avocado in it. (Though yes, the highlight of the bowl was shrimp and asparagus tempura.) There's also an option to BYOB (burrito or bowl) if none of the options under "Big Rolls and Bowls" strike your fancy. I think I'm going to go this route next time to get my ideal poke bowl: fresh raw fish with fresh raw veggies. read more

I ordered a salmon sushi burrito. I understand that food prices have to go up to support restaurants, but holy cow. This burrito was 20 dollars. It had 2 tiny pieces of salmon in it. I was torn between three and four stars on this one. I LOVE poke. It was my staple lunch when I lived in Manhattan and I'm so happy to be able to order it here in Boulder. The 3 star review really isn't about the flavor for once...my big complaint is that the build your own bowls charge per topping! The norm at poke joints everywhere else is that you pay for the number of proteins (1 protein price, 2 protein price, 3 protein price), and then for the rest of the toppings you can pile on as many as you like to create your perfect bowl. This is how it should be done! Another issue is Motomaki's pre-defined poke bowls-these are a *terrible* value and do not come with nearly an appropriate number of toppings for a poke bowl, so you end up with too much rice and not enough mix-ins. The good- when I do build my own poke bowl (paying way too much because a lot of toppings are required for a good poke bowl)-it does taste delicious, as it should. And the flavor of the sauce was far too overpowering. Also, it wasn't wrapped well. When I took a bite, the entire thing fell apart. This has never happened to me before here. Motomaki is known for customizable sushi burritos, sushi bowels, and poke. It's casual dining, and much cheaper than it's sister restaurant Hapa Sushi. Usually it's about 15$ for a bowl or roll, and you get a ton of food. They do rewards cards and happy hours on certain days. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is a few times (out of the many of I've been there) I've had unripe avocado. They also have kids options, the Japanese sodas you open by popping a marble through the top, Japanese beer, fancy organic sodas, wine, Red Bull, milk, juice, and sake I think. So rude! I came here for happy hour which they didn't follow the pricing listed. Right when we walked in a customer left upset with the service they were given. When they rang up my order they didn't not give me the happy hour price then when I asked they said it was too late. Motomaki is such a cool place! The idea of a sushi burrito is so creative. They had lots of good options on the menu, but you could create your own as well. As a vegan, I believe there were two options on the menu for me. I ended up making my own though. Everything tasted very fresh! My one advice is to not overdo it if you're making you're own, because mine started to fall apart because I stuffed it with so much stuff. The place looked very new & clean inside as well. read more
