Loving the brass buckets filled with yummy goodness

It's just like visiting your favourite uncle at Christmas time. Our softball team takes over this restaurant once a year to celebrate our victories of the season. Even though we are quite loud and make speeches and give out lots of trophies eg: the person most likely to give the captain a cigarette in his hour of need, they still welcome us with open arms and fantastic service. Just like most Londoners I know, I always order the same thing when I go out for a curry, Sag Paneer. So it's hard to comment on lots of the dishes. However, it's the best Sag Paneer in town and I should know as I've had a few. This place is super clean, gives great advice if you don't have a favourite, really attentive and are keen to get the smallest of details just right. Maybe they have got it down to a fine art as the rumour is that it's the oldest curry house in London, opening in the early 1950s. Judging by the amount of locals that popped in to pick up a takeaway - this place's reputation goes way beyond our softball team. The boys toilet has white fittings and the girls has pink, this makes me happy. They also serve up those big bottles of Tiger Beer which also makes me happy.

I came here by accident, two hungry and tired tourists, out walking and voila. The place is small, they say its the oldest Indian restaurant in the UK...thought I went to that somewhere else too? There was a large group of obnoxiously loud students in the place which really made it semi-miserable until they left as its a small place. I tried the chicken shashlick masala which was VERY good, perfectly cooked veggies and nice spices...the other items dahl soup, misti kodu, cheese nan were a-ok. Servers were very nice as well.

We came here on a Sunday night. The food was delicious, especially the butter chicken and chicken tandoori. Excellent value also!

Definitely try this place out because the food is excellent. It is convenient if you are in south Kensington area.

We waited about 20 minutes on a Thursday evening for a table for 4 (2 adults and two kids). I would not say this restaurant is kid friendly. They did their best to accommodate us but from the moment we sat down-it was clear they don't typically serve young children. The kids table settings had two fork, two knives and a glass. I asked them for non-glass and to remove the silverware which they eventually did but it took a while. They also can't really accommodate tree nut or shellfish allergies. Wish I had known this before we came. Our son ended up eating naan, plain rice and raita. Everything else was too risky. The food was pretty good though our service was lacking especially given the price point. We had the vegetable samosa, butter chicken, lamb biryani, chicken biryani, and naan. The server recommended we get raita for the heat of the biryani but didn't mention it's an extra charge-felt sort of dishonest. It was fine but we can't recommend and wouldn't go back.

A restaurant should respect its customers, not insult them for their food choices. Telling people…read morethey "can't force their choice" is absurd--what kind of restaurant refuses to accommodate preferences? If you serve food, customers have every right to order what they want. That's how hospitality works. What's worse is their disrespectful attitude toward Indians, looking down on customers while profiting from Indian cuisine. If you don't respect the people whose culture you represent, you shouldn't be in this business. There are many better restaurants that welcome diners with respect. Avoid this place.

I ordered over the phone as I have a Chicken Pathia fetish - having to have that dish whenever I have a curry from somewhere new, and as it wasn't on the menu I couldn't order it online due to not knowing how much it would cost! The chap on the end of the phone was very pleasant, and went to ask the chef how much my curry love would cost. They have a minimum £10 order so I chose my standard plain rice and plain naan which with 2 complimentary poppadums and complimentary chutney weighed in at just over £11. Not the cheapest I've ever had (and not the most expensive either!) but this is about what I'd expect to pay for a good meal delivered. Delivery took exactly 20 minutes, though I do live remarkably close to this place it turns out. The food came with the curry in a heat-sealed package, which I like, I think it looks very neat and clean and stops the curry spilling everywhere in transit. The rest was in plastic tubs, except naan and poppadums of course, which were still intact! It was piping hot and smelt delicious with not a hint of grease or oil floating around the top. Tender and moist chicken, a good thick sauce and a good chilli kick which didn't detract from the taste made for a great Pathia, possibly one of the better ones I've tasted. It was very coriandery though, which I myself am not fond of, but that didn't put me off as the quality was good. Naan was possibly a little undercooked and so fairly rubbery and stodgy, and I've never seen sesame seeds on a plain naan before, but it was still acceptable, and the poppadums very good, though the condiments (mango chutney and an onion salad) were in plastic pots which got hot during the journey and so the mango smelt, and tasted slightly of, plastic. Rice very good, and the small portion I got was easily a 2-person portion (I must point out I did only eat half!) and so I can only imagine how big a "Large" portion would be! Good solid curry, with a few things that just let it down a tad. And I'm thankful I spotted the cardamom seed before it spotted me!
