This was our second visit since they took over The Broken Yolk. We went with our kids the first time. Service was amazing, even this time. Food was alright. Not my favorite, but still good. Today, we decided to come to try their "famous" fish and chips. I was so disappointed. My fries were lukewarm, and the fish wasn't at all what I was expecting. My favorite dish is still the fish and chips. The batter is very light and crispy. We always ask for extra lemon. I have been a Mossman fan for years starting when I got to Bakersfield in 1980. They have been exceptionally consistent, high-quality meals, especially the fish and chips. It's the kind of thing that one depends on since they have been so good for so long. I decided to try the new Mossman's on Buena Vista Road, and was sadly disappointed. I ordered the traditional fish and chips. At the old Mossman's, the pieces of fish were medium to large size and very moist on the inside with a tasty batter on the outside. Crisp, yet tender. At the new Mossman's the fish pieces were much smaller, much the size of scallops. They were heavily battered and not very moist on the inside. It was almost if they used frozen cod instead of fresh cod. I do not know that to be true for sure, just that it tasted that way. The other disappointment was the coleslaw. The original Mossman's coleslaw seem to be sweeter and had small carrots mixed in with the slaw. The new Mossman was dull by comparison. It had a different sauce and only finally shredded cabbage. On the bright side, the french fries were delicious. There was a generous quantity, and they were done to perfection. Overall, I don't think I would return to the Mossman on Buena Vista, but I might go back to the Bowling Alley, Mossman's to see if they have also change their recipe, or if they are as good as I remember. The waiter was prompt and attentive. The new Mossman's was spacious and well decorated. It is a much different atmosphere than the Traditional Bowling Alley, Mossman's. read more

My husband and I had the pleasure of working with Mossman's & Amanda to cater our wedding in March this year. I took the recommendations of local wedding vendors and they DID NOT disappoint. Not only was Amanda the sweetest ever, she never complained about my 10,000 questions. Everything was smooth sailing. Now the food. We still to this day have people talking about our wedding food. We had jalapeno poppers and bruschetta for appetizers and main course was trip tip and stuffed chicken with asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes on the side. Santa Maria salad is a MUST! When the food is fresh and accurate, it's great. And you crave it. So you order, but more often than not, the food is rotten, old, or incorrect. So you boycott because you're tired of it, until you forget the bad and crave the times it was great. This was me. AGAIN. Ordered to go. Had to wait almost 25 minutes when we got there because the order wasn't all ready, so the rest sat there getting cold waiting on one thing to be finished. Which apparently was in the bag the whole time anyhow. The worker double checks our order accuracy, and we leave. We get home, and it's not even the correct order. Back to boycotting. To be honest, I really was not a fan of Broken Yoke, so when I heard Mossman's was going to occupy the building it was good news to me. I like local restaurants that have great food and Bakersfield has many great restaurants. I couldn't wait for Mossman's open and we went June 1st to have breakfast and I was pleased with my meal and the service. And went back for an early dinner on Sunday afternoon.. Food was great and had good service. My only concern about this place that I never liked, is the entrance/exit to the restaurant.. it's a cluster of people trying to come in, pick up take out food and people leaving: I was hoping it would of been updated when Mossman's moved in. read more

I recently had lunch at the new Mossman's restaurant just to check out their Famous Fish & Chips. After reading several "Great" reviews, I maybe set my expectations too high. My serving was no way "the best F & C's ever". First of all, there were only 4 or 5 nugget-size pieces of fish (not fillets) and the outsides were too overcooked and very crunchy. The fish inside wasn't overcooked, but had very little flavor. I wished the french fries would have been more crunchy instead of limp that they were. The cole slaw was bland and the tartar sauce was only slightly better. The restaurant itself was clean and all of the staff was very friendly and attentive. I can't fault Mossman's for the high prices ($16.29 for fish & chips) because everywhere seems have raised prices in hopes of keeping the doors open due to our current economy. I will probably eat here again, but it won't be for the Fish & Chips. read more

Mossman's definitely has really good fish and chips and I believe that is what they are known for. Every now and then I crave a good fish and chips and we end up getting food from here, but I believe that they used to be better than what they are now. I think they are still good and I definitely will continue to come back; however, I remember the fish and chips being better. I have had the food from here numerous times with family and when reps brought them to work and I have also ordered food when I had one of my son's birthday party's at the bowling alley and any time we have ordered food, they make the food fresh to order. That is one of the best ways to eat their fish and chips, just right after you order because you'll know what I was talking about once you bite into it. Bakersfield doesn't have a wide range of places that serve up fish and chips and so if you want some good fish and chips, this is the place to go. read more

As long as I have lived in this city, I have never been to the Southwest location. That finally changed the other night. Walking in is sort of like stepping back in time into an old café. I am a fan of the feels places like that give. Three out of four of us chose the fish n chips and not only were they promptly delivered with a smile and wonderful customer service, they were as delicious as the original location. Totally hit the spot. They have recently renovated the attached bowling alley and it is pretty awesome. Very large and accommodating for big parties or groups of people. I am looking forward to going back and bowling with friends and fam. Its fun to walk from the old-fashioned feel of the café to the glowing newness of the bowling alley just through a small walkthrough. One of the best places for fish and chips in Bakersfield. We go here quite often. Two orders of the fish and chips feeds the 4 of us. The fish is battered and fried well. The house made rolls are awesome! The coleslaw is good as well. A lot of the fish and chips places in town use a thick wet batter but their batter is just right. read more
