This burger joint is located off in the middle/end-ish of a small street in Wan Chai. Wasn't really hungry when I came, but I just HADDDDD to try at least something there cus I trekked all the way to the HK side. Alas, I settled for the Skinny Jeans ($80), which came with a smaller cheeseburger and side salad. The salad was fresh and the dressing was dece. The burger tho... STAR of the show. The bun was delightfully soft, but structured enough to hold up to the juicy patty. The patty itself... HOLY YESSSSS. Their patties are made of dry-aged beef and cooked to medium perfection. Wish I was hungrier so I could have tried one of their more unique creations. That will have to wait until next time I guess!

Their burgers are ground from prime parts and you can taste the difference. These giant Double Happiness patties are mostly for shock value, but they are juicy and delicious. Have the Hogtown if you want indulgence in a more reasonable but still giant portion. Bacon and pork are a winning combination. The Gambler is the one to go halfsies on if you're craving chicken too. The chicken breast is so crispy from being double fried, and the sauce doesn't make it soggy. Great place for a burger. Enough to make me forget In n' Out!

The ambience was like a retro diner, with unique CD art on the walls, diner-like stools, and photos of guests enjoying their meal at Burger Joy. I wasn't feeling a burger, so I ordered some truffle fries and wings. I was so impressed at the amount of truffle they sprinkle on the fries and the flavor of the wings. SO hot and fresh which made the meal so delicious. I went with Cajun seasoning and the exterior was lightly crispy and coated with the powder. Fantastic flavor! As a Westerner, I could rely on Burger Joy for that classic American style dining. They have late hours and close at 2:30AM! Glad my friend and I discovered this spot as we have been out so late and nothing but convenient stores were open in Wan Chai.

It was and still is such a hard thing to find in HK, which seems strange given the popularity of burgers and the huge expat population. Now that several big time fast food chains (#1) have opened up, Burger Joys and their pricey burgers may seem somewhat pedestrian. Burger Joys is still fairly unconventional from most of the other burger spots, which includes serving full on booze (even cocktails!) and remaining open for 24 hours a day. The latter is mainly for location's sake, Wanchai and it's red light district vibe tends to spurn a lot of expat visits; many of whom are less likely to look for a HK Cafe over the idea of a burger and fries. The burgers themselves evoke memories of In N Out by presentation alone, sans taste and price. That said, the burgers are good. I'm not sure if the signature double cheeseburger warrants the $139HKD price tag, but it's still tasty. Throw in a shake and some fries (better with truffle!), the meal gets closer to 200HKD+ with the service charge. Thank goodness they accept credit cards. The service has been a mix of great and subpar. Some days when the gentleman from Vancouver is working, the service is professional, fun, and efficient. Some other days / hours, it's a crapshoot of casual and lackluster staff. The mileage definitely varies. I suppose the adage applies: come for the food and nothing else. Burger meat was mediocre and taste of foie gras was also just bland. The truffle sauce fries were ok but the odd thing was they came out way before my burger. Another disappointment was I ordered the aperol spritz and they advertised as happy hour and once I got the bill they said it wasn't happy hour price because it was considered a holiday week. I ordered the Foie Gras Beef Burger and a side of fish fingers w/tartar sauce. I also got their homemade iced peach tea. When the burger came, it was already cut in half. The presentation didn't look really well since the top of the bun was separated from the burger and was put on the plate. The burger had foie gras, cheddar cheese, beef patty, tomato slice, romaine lettuce and their homemade sauce. It also came with a side salad. The burger was very juicy though. The combination of the foie gras with the beef worked well but the portion of foie gras was a bit too small. On the other hand, I thought the fish fingers were really juicy and fresh. The iced peach tea is also a must! Overall, I give this place a 3.5 stars.

Five Guys has a fun ambience and they offer fun things like unlimited free peanuts and free sofa refills, which pay for themselves after you have I'm guessing you get your third refill, and a massive smile from your dentist. Anyway, I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with a salted caramel milkshake. I had their milkshakes before during a conference at USC, and I found it a bit too sweet. Erroneously assuming that I just had a milkshake that had a slightly overzealous serving of caramel syrup, I gave it another try. I have to admit that I like a thick milkshake, but it seems that Five Guys just makes them far too sweet! I might just forego the milkshakes next time. As for the burger, do they HAVE to serve it in a paper bag? I was eating it in there, I'd have been perfectly fine with them hurling the burger at me with just the wrapper. Considering how they ship those bags from Wisconsin, it makes me feel even worse about wasting the packaging. The burger was okay. I like that the bacon was nice and crispy, but the patties had a texture that suggested that they were processed (duh, fast food), but what bugged me the most was that I had 4 slices of American cheese, and none of those slices were melted. Like seriously, how could you not melt a cheese that was literally designed for grilled cheese and burgers because of how melty they are? By not melting the cheese, the American cheese gave off its characteristically slimy texture. Service is friendly, and efficient, but please don't tell me that it's standard policy to leave cheese on a burger unmelted. I pay a lot more here than I would if I went to McDonalds. I think I have the right to expect better.

There are…read morea few dotted around HK, but by far my favourite is the one in Wan Chai, mainly due to the slightly surly manager, who, whilst always very polite and courteous, always makes me think I am being disciplined by my Dad. The menu is burgers, with a few different varieties of topping, and sides like; poutine, onion rings, salad. The best, though, has to be; the fish burger, which is like proper British battered fish in a bun. Far too many folks make their fish burgers like MacD's, so this chunky battered number is a great change. And also the veggie burger, which is a great rice and bean burger, a decent size and full of the goodness. We don't want a portobello mushroom posing as a burger, we want a burger (just with no meat!). Other lovely things on the menu include their shakes, which I find a good blend of sweet and creamy, without being too sickly. It is essentially a fast food joint, so you pay and get your food in paper. There is usually a short wait as they make to order, but only a couple of minutes. The restaurants are plastic tables and chairs, and you have to bus your own rubbish, so it does feel like any other fast food joint. The only difference is the food is just that much better and fresher. Definitely give the fish burger a go, it's really good.

I went with my regular order of a mushroom burger and a vanilla milkshake and I got exactly that. It's not an actual White Spot so i can't really expect them to make it look pretty when the only thing they serve my food with that isn't disposable is the food tray, but it still tasted good and it was definitely a cut above the other fast food chains. The buns were lightly toasted and had a slight crunch, the burger patty was not very big, but I could immediately tell that it's dense from my first bite. The mushrooms and the sauce were nice, the mushrooms were only a bit chewy, and it was nice that they remembered to melt the cheese onto the mushrooms, the sauce was slightly smoky. Like most Triple O's the fries aren't fantastic in that they are rarely crunchy, but they being said, I generally prefer thin cut fries. To be fair, they also give you enough each time to fill you up properly. Triple O's makes good milkshakes, vanilla wok always be my favourite. But keep in mind that since they seem to use blenders for the milkshakes, you may need to stir the shake regularly to keep the ice crystals from clumping up. Again, I'd argue that their milkshakes are better than most fast food joints on the grounds that they scoop real ice cream into their blenders and then they just top it off with milk. If you're out of ideas for where to eat, and you'd like to spoil yourself without blowing your budget. Just have Triple O's. It's a piece of Vancouver that you can experience in Hong Kong.

However, if you hadn't made a reservation and couldn't get in, there's plenty of other restaurants in what is called food street with each one offering a patio as well. Since food street is like a wide alley that runs between all these buildings that house high-end boutiques on the ground floors, you would not be subjected to the noise and exhaust of HK traffic. The layout is quite casual, with a mix of couples and families. The menu is quite extensive with fresh oysters from different countries. We sampled two different varieties from Ireland. There's also a tapas page offering things from garlic shrimps to iberico ham. We ordered the foie gras sandwiched between toasts. It was quite good if a little rich. One of our friends had a soup of the day which was butter squash. It came with a piece of tomato-rubbed toast, Spanish style. He liked it. We also ordered a Caesar salad for two which was large enough for the four of us to sample. A solid salad but lacked a bit of dressing. When we mentioned it to the waiter, he brought out more dressing on the side. For our mains, my GF and one of our friends ordered ordered the Iberico pork chops grilled and served with roasted potatoes and half a head of roasted garlic. The two chops were juicy and tender with a hint of sweetness from the balsamic glaze. The chops were part of the daily special which I also ordered off. I had a pasta with prawns and scallops. The pasta was tasty with three large prawns. My only quibble would be that I wish there were more scallops as I only got two. Our other friend ordered off the menu and had a seafood stew that featured clams, mussels, scallops, and half a lobster. It was huge. Now I know where my scallops went! All in all, a nice meal in a nice setting without breaking the bank.
