    So good. So inexpensive.

Pepper Lunch? They should call it "Perfect Lunch!" I have a habit of getting $200+ lunches in SoHo, but when I'm in Causeway Bay, you're sure to find me at Pepper Lunch in Hysan Place. The Japanese chain is found in a few HK locations. They feature beef, chicken and fish dishes with corn and rice that you stir fry in its sizzling cast iron plate. It's fresh, delicious and only about $60 HKD. Huge bargain, great food.

My go to choice for lunch if I am in the food court. It's a unique take on skillet rice. You choose your protein and it comes on a hot plate with rice. You have the option of adding an egg or even cheese. There are also 2 choices of sauce to sprinkle on top of your cooking food but don't add too much or else it will be very salty. The hot plate also comes with instructions on how to cook your meal. Don't flip the meat too late or else it will be burnt and overcooked.

Shop your way through Hyson Place and stop at the top of the mall for a really affordable meal at Pepper Lunch. I know we have this back home but it's a fun DIY meal. Your food comes on a sizzling plate to cook and mix everything up yourself. Add some sauce too! A little rice, corn, beef and a lot of pepper makes a simple yet delicious lunch.

Sizzling Pepper Plate with Beef, Egg and cheese... yum.

Take the elevator to 12F then go down one level via escalator. Basically its a food court with approx. 8-10 separately run walk up food counters. Each one offers a different food type/mix but all use the same seating area (menu is in local and English). They offer a series of meats/fish that go onto a sizzling clay plate that comes with rice, corn and optional egg and/or cheese. I ordered the #1, sizzling plate with beef and I of course added the egg and cheese. After about 3mins my number was called and I was handed a sizzling plate with a rather ingenious paper ring that keeps you from sizzling your hands off... Overall my lunch was an outstanding, quick order (fresh) meal for around $60hk... that's about $7us. Final Call- would go again, in fact maybe tomorrow......

Great GREAT value for a restaurant joint right in the middle of Causeway Bay. Despite the constant inflation that infects great food places everywhere, Pepper Lunch has continued serving its $50 pepper lunch beef meal without reservation. Throw in a little extra for a drink, and it's a phenomenal place to have a filling meal at a bargain price - or what passes for that these days in Hong Kong.

Great good. Portion is decent. Long wait during peak time. I waited 25 minutes at 2pm Wednesday. It is worth the wait. $58 with a drink. Student discount and reward card if they apply to you.

The menu is kinda restricted and the sets start at $700 per person! They all are very heavily seafood oriented. I'm not such a huge seafood person and I try to avoid beef so I decided to save a little $ and make my own a la Carte dinner - with chicken. Steak, tofu eggplant, veggies and special mintaku salmon roe fried rice. Later on I found out since everyone else ordered beef the chef shared the beef with everyone even though two of us didn't order beef and did a la carte. That was nice, so I got to sample a tiny bit of Wagyu as well as a bit of beef roll. Nothing else was shared though. Highlights; - that Wagyu beef is ... phenomenal to say the least. Just amazing amazing meat. - the onion crunchy sauce they serve the beef with is also really good - grilled chicken steak is really good, tender, and the green onion crunchy garlic topping really works well. - the special fried rice is worth it. - the tofu ... was amazing. That was the surprise. It comes with six huge pieces and they put something that seems like gochujang and green onions on it. Everyone wanted some. - veggies and the eggplant were both good too I would say this place is for very special occasions when you want to go all out and price is absolutely no objection.

You might feel a little lost, a little disorientated by the light maybe, because for the last few hours you've been on a food journey unlike anything you've ever experienced before. But don't get me wrong, it's everything you've wanted to experience and more. First off, a little context: Wa San Mai is huge - it's like its own world on the 22nd floor, covering over 10,000 square feet. There is a teppanyaki side, and a sushi/standard dining side, and another area for settling the stomach. A really wanted me to try the flying fish sashimi here first - mainly because they use the bones and head to make 'chips' more than the sashimi itself - so he asked the server straight off the bat. The server said that the fish hadn't been flown in from Japan yet, but should be arriving in less than half an hour. I'm not sure whether this guy was making Wa San Mai seem more decadent than it already is, but it worked - I was impressed. Of course, we ordered this on top of the mountain of food we had ordered in our set, and were not disappointed - incredibly fresh, and with bone 'chips' that offered a completely different texture to the smooth sashimi. As for our set... hedonism at its gastronomic extreme. To start, we had an abalone and shrimp amuse bouche. Followed by teppanyaki scallop, wagyu steak, sake clam soup, and lobster two ways - teppanyaki and soup. Everything was a masterful show of knifeskill and grill in front of us, by an expert teppanyaki chef. He later refused our cheers of Sake because he said he would be driving a motorcycle home that night, but we made sure to tell him how appreciative we were. After all this, how could we do without the totally unnecessary but traditional ending of fried rice? After fried rice and nearly collapsing onto the hot steel into a food coma, we were taken to another room where we were allowed to indulge in green tea and sesame ice cream for as long as we pleased, accompanied ten minutes later by tea and coffee. This gave A and I a good chance to talk about how delicious and ridiculous that meal was. Sidenote: they've also got those Japanese toilets that have warm up the seats and... um, intimately clean.

The…read morewhole experience felt like private dining since your personal Teppanyaki chef cooks right in front of you. I believe many of the dishes were fusion cuisine, not just Japanese, and some of the food was very Hong Kong style (like the borscht soup, abalone, etc.). The portions of all the dishes were super duper small and it barely filled me up, but considering I was still suffering from jetlag, I was good. I visited with family and our family friends so I was not in charge of the bill, but I'm sure it was pretty expensive considering how this was upscale dining. I recommend this restaurant if you want to socialize with your friends, and get some sort of private dining feel. We had a great time and had an overall positive experience eating here.

We would both get the standard teppanyaki set lunch each time and though this doesn't change, we don't really get bored of it. Back in December of 2013, we had some family friends over and we wanted to bring them here for a nice lunch. My mother called to make a reservation and told them that we would like to reserve the private room for the six of us. She called again to change the date, so there were actually two phone calls to confirm this, but when we arrived they told us they just led us to the bar table and when we asked about the room, they told us we had never reserved it. What?! We confirmed it not once, but TWICE, with you over the phone and you're just denying it? It was clear why they did this though; the room was occupied with a pretty large group (eight people, if I remember correctly), and the restaurant wanted to give the room to the larger group as they can set a higher minimum charge and earn more money that way. Moving on - today was my mom's birthday, and she said that despite our bad experience that time, she was craving their teppanyaki and wanted to go. We ordered the standard teppanyaki like we always do and as usual, the food did not disappoint. My favorite part of the set surprisingly is always the rice. Sesame, preserved vegetables and pickles are tossed into the rice and cooked expertly by the chef right in front of you, and yes - it's just rice - but it's really good rice. The chef also does this thing where he mixes a little bit of rice and preserved vegetables, flattens it and adds a small amount of oil for it to lightly fry. This creates a thin, crispy sheet of rice that kind of resembles the texture of chips. The rice today was a little saltier than usual, but still good. The first teppanyaki dish, the shrimp and scallop is really good too and complemented very well with truffle sauce. I always opt for the beef tenderloin for the main course, and I found that the portion was larger than previous times today! I asked one of the waiters if the restaurant had anything special to be given to my mother since it is her birthday today, and he wished her happy birthday and told her she would get dessert on the house. We added that we would get a dessert since it's part of the set anyway, and the waiter said something about how she would get two. He then returned with a milk pudding for my mom in an obviously larger glass and said that this was 'king size', then gave me my milk pudding in a shallower glass. But actually, both are the same size, just that my mom's was in a bigger glass! I put both glasses next to each other to check, and the width of our puddings were exactly the same and they came up to the same height. So, food doesn't disappoint here, but I can't say the same of service. If you preferred to offer the room to the bigger group, that's understandable - be honest and tell us that. If you don't have another dessert to give my mom or anything extra in the kitchen for her, tell us honestly too. We won't be mad because it's not like you are obliged to give my mom another dessert because it's her birthday, but you are obliged to respect your customers enough to be honest!

There are a few teppanyaki sets for lunch, also other hot food sets. We have chosen the teppanyaki set for 2. The set got everything - cod fish, abalone (very huge), steam egg, foie gras, a steak, fried veggie, friend rice, ice cream...Instead of just sear cook them, they are all served quite uniquely. The cod fish, after searing, was served in a very yummy green sauce. The huge abalone was a dancing one, served in a sauce which I thought as the internal organ of the abalone but instead it made of sea urchin! No wonder it's so tasty. They continue to surprise me with an off-menu bonus steam egg, with caviar and foie gras (wow!). What else? The foie gras was very nice too, crispy outside and soft inside. The steak and the rest were very nice too. The chef was very nice and chit chat with us throughout the lunch. As this is my first time here, he showed me the fire trick that he showed my friends the other day. And for two of our friends who ordered normal set lunch he additionally made 2 teppanyaki red bean pancakes for them, garnished nicely with figs and fruits. I know that the chef has paid every attention to his customer when he handed us the business card and asked me to bring my husband to come try again, while asking my friend (who has been very quiet during lunch) to bring more friends next time. I think this is the personal touch that could not be found in other tappanyaki restaurant.
