I can see why, as they do lovely fried rice artwork in the end (teddy bear with fluffy bonito flakes for fur and cavier for eyes) so it does make for a memorable ending for a special occasion dining. Another thing the birthday boy loved is that there are lots of toys on display inside the restaurant. I wonder if the name Chiu comes from the owner's name, or his love for Ultraman. This place has a nice assortment of courses for teppanyaki, from seafood to meat. A big warning: if you are uncomfortable with watching your dinner being tortured and dying a painful death, DO NOT ORDER THE LOBSTER. Our chef is great. He doesn't do gimmicky tricks but his hands work the grill with precision and flaire. He's also acutely on top of what's going on. He signals the waiters when our sake runs low, and offers to take a group picture when we are taking pictures among ourselves. He also grills some extra garlic when he sees how popular it is, and gives us extra bowls when he sees us sharing the rice. Myriad little things that get noticed and taken care of before we have to ask. While this place scores low in my book for animal rights (almost dock a star for that but then who am I to judge other culture's dining practice?), it gets points for workplace diversity: there is a female teppanyaki chef, and a few employees with disability.

The cooking atmosphere (entertainment) from the other cooking chefs is lacking, have not seen much 'showmanship' as comparing to a Benihana. Lunch prices is very reasonable and the portion is good. Dinner could be pricy depending on what you order. Good selections of Saki. Fairly clean establishment, they also employs several 'handicapped' staff (mute) I give them credit for providing these folks an opportunity to work in the restaurant industry, they are alway smiling and friendly.

Looking on Yelp for "sushi," we found Fukumura in the same shopping structure and although it did not have any reviews, we thought we would go. SO GLAD WE DID! My husband eats sushi and I eat sashimi as a general rule. In both situations, we agreed that this meal was fantastic! Not just kind of fantastic, but "holy crap this fish is so fresh I should slap it" kind of fantastic. The sashimi scallops and sweet shrimp were so delicate and sweet and simple perfection. The tuna, the flounder and the salmon were equally perfect and cut in large fat sizes. We sat at the actual sushi bar and were able to see all the cool rolls and items that the sushi chefs were preparing. Quite the art amongst this group of sushi chefs! We ordered veggie tempura and a bottle of cold sake. Cold sake was presented in a cool serving vessel and kept pefectly chilled until the last drop. The staff was so accomodating and on it at the completion of a dish, refilling of tea or reorder of more sushi. A lot of staff, regularly available, welcoming and helpful, genuinely glad that we were there and happy for our business. The restaurant is not large, seating only 50. It does have a small sushi bar that sits about 10 and also a teppanyaki bar that sits about 10 too. Then there is the small dining room and also appeared to have a private back room of some sort. The low ceilings and the llight wooded walls make the place have a warm feel, but there is no sitting on the ground or anything here in some traditional Japanese spots. This is not a bustling area at 6PM on a Sunday, very dead really. We think this place and the restaurants all around it must have a busy work crowd during mid week lunches and such, for again it was dead when we showed up. The whole plaza around Fukumura appeared dead. But don't let this fool you, this restaurant was great and we would defiinately go back. It is expensive, so be warned. We walked out with a bill around $2200HKD for just the two of us, but you get what you pay for. They do have a $600HKD sashimi sampler that included tuna, salmon, shrimp, scallop, toro and something else. We tend to over indulge when it comes to sushi, so our bill can get out of hand. So if you are not getting out of hand, neither will your bill.

I was so happy to find this place in Hong Kong and the excitement of cooking for yourself has never escaped me. I am not the most experienced with cooking raw meat although I am getting better as I grow older. The appeal of this restaurant is that you prepare the food yourself and the secrets are just giving you the supplies. Instructional manuals tell you how to prepare the food, for how long you are meant to cook things, and how to use the devices. You have a stopwatch that you are supposed to use to time cooking, but if you are like me you need to practice using it before actually using it. It is a nice place to eat with friends. I am thinking back to all the times I shared with my past coworkers. Life was and is still good.

Ever itch to get to the other side of the table when dining at Benihana and do some fancy tricks with the spatulas? Here's your chance. For me, it has been a childhood dream of mine, after watching many anime and J-pops, to visit a DIY okonomiyaki shop. We ordered several types of pancakes, as well as some udon to stir fry. We even pan fried the dumplings that come in a bamboo steamer. We ended the meal with the souffle pancake, which is not bad even if it doesn't measure up to ones sold in shops. Overall, it was a fun dinner, great for a casual small gathering. Our clothes did smell bad afterwards though, so don't wear anything fancy. My complain is with the service. Our waitress was just not very friendly nor helpful. After leaving us with the menu for a 15 minutes, she came back and told us that we have 90 minutes to dine and the clock started ticking the moment we sat down. I replied that we had been waiting for someone to come by to take our order, and also needed help navigating the menu (which, while colorful with pictures, isn't very explanatory). My friend ordered a green tea, which the waitress said they don't have. Surprised that the restaurant doesn't offer tea, I checked the menu and pointed to the tea item. That's oolong tea, she said curtly. Okay, that is correct, but she could have nicely asked if we may want oolong tea instead. She also dropped off our orders without much explanation, so we were rather confused as to how to cook our food. Fortunately, a server took pity on us, gave us a step by step, and then set the alarm for us... "flip it after 5 minutes, then reset and flip it after another five". He also helped us with our drink refills, and told us that as it was a slow night we were welcome to stay as long as we wish. If not for him, this review would probably be a 3 star.

#ThrowbackThursday - Remembering Hong Kong…read more.. Conveniently located at Nathan Road near the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, we decided to have our final meal in Hong Kong at Daikiya Japanese Restaurant. It's a very solid all-you-can-eat option with two thick notebooks of pictured items to choose from. The raw and the cooked, the fish and the meat, the meal and the dessert... Sashimi - The usual suspects abound (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, etc.), but they also have hokkigai (surf clam), amaebi (sweet shrimp), Hokkaido hotate (scallop), and nishin (Japanese herring with roe). Served on a bed of ice and decorated with artificial flowers, each platter was well-plated... and delicious! Nigiri - There are plenty of winners here, but let's focus on the one that topped the list - Grilled Scallop with Crab Oil and Garlic. Seared enough to give that burnt flavor, dabbed with crab oil, then topped with roasted garlic... Need I say more? This was the highlight of our meal and, yes, my younger daughter and I had this over and over and over! Worthy runners-up - Grilled Flatfish and Prawn with Black Fish Roe. Rolls - An assortment of maki (sushi roll), temaki (hand roll), gunkan-maki (ship roll), and sashimi rolls was on the menu as well, but we were able to try only a few. The Mango and Soft-Shell Crab Roll was too small and had more cucumber than anything else. There simply were better options to be had. Grilled - Surf and Turf! Shrimp, scallop, oyster, lamb chop, beef, chicken, pork, and even pineapple. The best dish was the Sautéed Diced Beef with Garlic. Perfectly seasoned and cooked medium, these beef chunks were so tender and tasty! Dessert - Gotta save room for some (or all) of these - mochi, macaron, ice cream, tiramisù, brownie, crème brûlée, fruit, nut, and so on. We indulged in their special Milk Top, which had a limit of one flavor per person. We tried the Romantic Moment and Green Tea Harmony, which had soft-serve ice cream, red bean/paste, mochi balls, jellies, and rice crispies. The only way to cap off an AYCE! After restocking on calories, we were ready to head back to the hotel and then to HKIA. Daikiya was just what the doctor ordered to fill up our bellies before leaving. We totally enjoyed our stay in Hong Kong, but we had to wrap up our adventure. It was time to say goodbye... for now...

No wonder HK is the paradise for foodies! 1) The menu was extensive, almost overwhelming (there are 2 books), including sashimi boat, nigiri, tempura, seared fish, hand rolls, California rolls, desserts, anything you can think of! My eyes lit up when I opened the menu like I saw gold. 2) The food quality was very good for the price we paid. Everything raw was fresh and chilled and the rest were all served hot and steamy. 3) Service was super efficient and courteous too. They tried to fulfill all your requests. 4) It can be packed so book an early table. 5) You won't break your bank here to be able to enjoy a quality AYCE. We were all so full at the end. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in HK! I hope they stay in business for a while and keep the quality up! **** I heard the other locations don't taste as good so not every Daikiya is the same.
