We have a clay tile roof on our historic home, and unfortunately, the previous owners did not repair it properly, despite their claims. Just three months after moving in, we discovered mold and ongoing roof leaks. I reached out to Mortenson, and Andrew has been absolutely fantastic--responsive, helpful, and professional. The roofer who previously "fixed" the roof claimed it was impossible to identify the source of the leaks and recommended a complete roof replacement. Andrew immediately dismissed that idea, explaining that in most cases, the source of a leak *can* be found and repaired without resorting to an expensive full replacement. I have been using Mortenson for my roofing and gutter needs for about 8 years now and cannot recommend them enough to those that have specialty roofs. I have an old roof from 1947 on the house that most companies won't touch. I found Mortenson after some extensive research and frustration with other companies' suggestions for leaks I was experiencing when I first purchased my home. After replacement of sections of roof and some of my copper gutters that failed, I no longer have problems and they've saved me from having to have the whole roof replaced, which would be exorbitantly expensive. They've done a great job and always very professional. Not always the quickest to get out due to them being so busy, but when I have an emergency, they are there within days of calling. I have them come and inspect my roof every year and have had them come out for emergency tile replacement. Everyone I have dealt with -- from their estimator Ken to the various people who have worked on my roof (Joe, Matt and Julio) to people in the office (Diana and Andrew) -- has been great. I am VERY picky on who I let touch my house and they are the only ones I'll trust to work on my roof and gutters. read more

The copper gutter and 2 downspouts are magnifico. Would have given 5 stars, however, the installation just wasn't 100%. I had to come up with a solution for the dripping and puddling at the base of the downspout. But Ken S. was prompt and courteous with return phone calls and advice. Ken was Awesome ! We Own a 2 flat in Chicago and the roof is extremely high , it's an older Spanish tile roof . After some Highwinds and bad storms I could see one of the tiles hanging in the gutter. I'm not sure if when the guys put the gutters on they loosened some tiles up ? Of course I panicked and assumed the worst . Ken came over said the roof looked to be in good shape and didn't try to scam me , said it was not a major problem and will come by and take care of it. I am very disappointed with my interaction with this company. I called for over one month to try to get someone to come out to my home for an estimate. The girl who answered the phone (Emma) was very nice and polite however she could not get anyone to call me back to schedule an appointment. She told me that she gave the message to Ken Schwartz who was supposed to contact me. He never called. I called them back over 8 times within a six week time period but Emma could not explain why I was not contacted. I finally called and asked to speak to the owner Michael but he was unavailable so I left my name and number and he NEVER called me back. Very unprofessional. read more

Terrible customer service that overshadows good roofing work. From the moment we put our deposit down until leaving this review, I have never been able to get someone at Mortenson to call me back. After our deposit was cashed and hearing nothing for two weeks, I started leaving messages (always including my name, address of the property, quote number and phone number). Never a call back but I finally got someone on the phone. She explained they were busy but it would be about eight weeks till they could do the work. No problem, thanks for letting us know. After nine weeks, I called again and left a few messages, still no response. Suddenly, one Saturday morning at 6:30 AM (about 10 weeks after deposit), with no warning, a crew descends on the house. This causes lots of problems. From needing access to our neighbors driveway for scaffolding to needing to block our driveway and the fact that we had 21 kindergarten kids coming over for a birthday party, it was a disaster. They crew was great though. They did their work fast and kept out of the way. While the crew said they were told we were notified of the work being scheduled, I am still waiting for the notification in the mail or that voicemail letting us know. Bottom line, the roofing work is good. But know that all customer service is non-existent. So if you are ok with writing a check and just waiting until they show up one day, someday, whenever, go for it. If you expect at least one phone call or any communications at all, over a few months, this isn't the roofing company for you. read more

Quality work but BEWARE of their billing practices. We received an estimate for work to be done on part of our roof and were told to expect between 48 and 72 hours of labor. In total, we received just 22 hrs of labor at our house and were surprised to receive a bill for the full amount of the estimate. After asking for a breakout of labor and materials, (and initially being told we were not allowed to see that information) we finally received the total hours billed. Unfortunately, there was a huge discrepancy between the billed hours and the actual time spent at the house working. Even allowing for additional time spent in travel, set up, etc, we had a hard time understanding how they arrived at their total of 38 hours of labor. It turned out that we were being charged 7 or 8 hrs per day per worker regardless of how long the workers actually spent at our home. For example, the last day of the job, we received 2.5 hrs of labor at the house and were billed for a full 8 hrs. In all, we were charged approximately $5000 for 38 hours of labor which works out to a labor rate of about $155/hr for our job. What made this even more frustrating was the fact that over the course our discussion, we were told that if they overestimate labor, they would issue a credit. Even the billing they shared with us fell between 10 and 34 hours under their initial labor estimate and they still refused to admit they overcharged us. After trying to discuss our issues with the bill and not getting anywhere, we ended up paying. In short, the quality of the work was fine but their billing practices are unethical at best. Our advice... Save yourself the hassle and look elsewhere. read more

We hired Mortenson Roofing to help repair our tile roof on our 1926 Spanish stucco style home in Park Ridge. Every time it rained, we would get water in our living room. I had called 3 roofers out before finding Mortenson and all of them said they couldn't/wouldn't work on a tile roof. So, when my neighbor gave me Mortenson's card, I was cautiously hopeful. After making the call, their salesman Ken Swart set up an appointment with me to come see the roof. He was very easy to communicate with and accommodated my schedule. He climbed up on the ladder, took pictures of the problem and confidently told me that they could fix my problem. He also gave me a copy of the Know Your Consumer Rights brochure which is required by law (a mark of a professional contractor). I received the invoice in the mail a few days later, it was detailed and broken out by option. After contemplating the work for a few weeks (maybe months), we decided to go for it. They take credit cards which is a huge perk for those of us who like to earn miles! I paid 25% down and scheduled my job. On the day of the job, the two roofers arrived before schedule but patiently waited in their van until the official "start time." Tony and his assistant were very polite and efficient. They were able to repair the roof without any major issues and ended up replacing the flashing. The job looks beautiful, I'm so happy we found Mortenson. I actually want it to rain to test it out! I will definitely be using them in the future if we have any roof issues. read more
