    Old roof #1
    Kelly Q.

I am 100% a real customer who had Advanced Roofing & Masonry do TWO tear off roofs (one cedar plank shingle and one flat) in the fall of 2021. I'm a landlord and both of the houses had water damage from previous roof leaks. First off, Benjamin (the owner) is very personable and legit knows a lot about roofing. He came out to look at the jobs when he promised he would be there and took his time to explain the work that needed to be done and what our options were. He promptly quoted the work and got it done on the aggressive timeline I required from them. Most importantly, the roofs look excellent and we are dry. Despite the fact that there aren't many reviews for this company, I chose them for the two jobs because they gave me the best price for both jobs combined and I trusted that Ben and his team would do an excellent job after walking through the jobs with them. Even if they are a start up company with little online reputation, you can believe me when I say this crew was experienced. You can't do the things I saw (one man carrying a full sheet of plywood up a 3-story ladder on his back or a guy working on a horizontal ladder suspended 30 feet in the air by 2 vertical ladders) unless you have years of experience. Trust these guys.

We were aware of a couple of leaks in the flat section of our carriage house main roof as well as in the skylight roof for the annex that needed to be repaired. We requested quotes from several roofing companies. Benjamin came out the next day to provide a estimates. Advanced Roofing & Masonry provided the lowest price and the best materials for the job. They installed Mineral White Modified Torch down rubber with new gutter flashings, removed all clay copings from parapet walls to install the new flashing under them before reinstalling all the clay copings. They also installed new flashings around all pipes coming out the roof. For the skylight roof, they installed a new layer of Smooth Bitutak Rubber to provide drainage around all 5 skylights as well as flashings up and under for each skylight and up along the main brick wall behind the gutter. Benjamin and his crew worked tirelessly to get the job done, including Saturday. I highly recommend Advanced Roofing & Masonry for any roofing repairs or maintenance.

    Fixed roof

Benjamin came the next day I needed a hole on the roof fixed. Mind you, this is during storm season and he knew it was urgent. Everything was documented professionally and the job got done quickly. I am happy with the service.

Benjamin provided a quick response and on-site assessment to replace a damaged gutter downspout on our building. The work was scheduled and completed the next morning. Great workmanship and value.

A great solution was reached and gutters have been fixed. I expect no further issues based on the solution provided. Thanks Benjamin and team.

Benjamin came out and gave us a very good total quote on the roofs that also included taking away an old rooftop deck.

So after twenty years of making modest hardwood fires, I started to have a cough. My sister came to visit and even being in the living room (no fire) made her cough and gave her a runny nose. Thinking, okay, I'll have my chimney cleaned, I called Chicago Chimney. Toni was nice and said that Mario was really good at his work, and it would be $150. When he came, pleasant, personable, and clearly competent, I could see that being near my fireplace was making his nose run. I told him about my sister. Might need more that just a cleaning, he said. He shone his flashlight up a short ways into the fireplace. "I call that black glass", he said. What is it? I said. My English is not so good, he said, underestimating his excellent skills. Google clarified. I found out that bubbles of "black glass" represent the third stage of a serious creosote problem-- first soot, then tar that is runny, then the glass part, beautiful and perfectly ready for a chimney fire. One thing about my dad, he prepared me to know a good person when I saw him. Mario said that he was going to have to come back with material and brushes that could dissolve the creosote. The next day, when forty or fifty pounds of mortar on the chimney lining just fell off piece by piece once the creosote was not holding it all together, he explained that another day and another step would be involved, putting a mixture of protective covering over a now very porous surface, insulation, sealant. (As it happened, he did this himself by crawling up into the tight black space and painting it on. The dilemma of having a helper who was unwilling to do it was a problem he would deal with later. He took the guy off to another job and came back. It was this part, where he was a matter of fact about doing the exceptionally nasty work, and understanding about the kid's inability to do it-- he just said "last winter I was doing this every day." I want to put a sign up in my yard for him and his professional and humane work. He charged me $900 for the cleaning part and $1100 for the resealing part. Interestingly, this is less than $150/ year for 20 years, not even counting inflation; I recommend him wholeheartedly for yearly (or every-other-year sweeping) and for the whole cleaning and sealant job if you are someone who didn't know how bad it could get. He does tuckpointing too. The warmth and charm apparently come free.

Then they told us that the guy Mario, who did the work does not work for them anymore. We ask them to send someone else to repair our chimney . They stopped taking our phone calls and would not answer our text messages. I recommend anyone needing chimney work to stay away from this company.

He stopped by for an estimate which I went with his company due to their great reviews. He stated $500 was a good faith deposit, deducted from total which was $8500. He stated he would get back with me after they complete a few jobs. I agreed. No answer regarding a start date so I reached out to him and he stated they could start a few days later which I scheduled on my off day. After breaking porch apart, there was a problem with my porch walls which needed to be torn down and redone but by a tuckpointer. He gave me a friend he works with, Jose, who did a great job. After he was done with his part then VC could continue with project. They came on a day we were expecting a storm though sunny throughout most of the day. I was concerned the job wouldn't turn out right due to rain. Though the concrete was discolored at first a few days later it turned the correct color. The project overall was good though I'm a bit bombed that residue concrete is on the new brick wall I had to pay extra for....only way to remove is acid wash which will change color of concrete. I opted for them use their concrete truck which required them to remove panels from my wrought iron gate versus renting a concrete pourer for additional $1200. The owner, his father who was friendly, professional, was able to weld it back together. Between the porch and tuckpointing my interior grass is shot. Overall a good job but the concrete on new bricks costed a Star.
