DO NOT USE - Unreliable Roofing Contractor - Nightmare! We hired Shield Masonry & Roofing Inc. in June 2022 to repair the roof of our condo building and build a new deck on top of it. Unfortunately, our experience with them was a nightmare, and we feel compelled to share it with others to prevent anyone else from going through the same ordeal. First and foremost, the contractor used incorrect materials while building the deck. To add insult to injury, they charged us for more expensive materials than they actually used, displaying a complete lack of integrity and transparency. We mutually agreed with the contractor in advance in writing that the roof deck would be built with "Trex Transcend" composite decking in Rope Swing color; the contractor, however, built our roof deck with "Trex Enhance G2 Grooved" composite decking in Foggy Wharf color, a material of much lesser quality that is already breaking in some areas. To make matters worse, the deck construction was carried out in a way that now leaves our roof in violation of building codes. Not only did they fail to adhere to regulations, but they also neglected to inform us of these potential issues during the process, and when we let them know that their work was out of code, they did not apologize, would not fix their work to align with code, and blamed it on us when they are the experts. Furthermore, upon inspection by independent experts, it was determined that the roof deck framing is not structurally sound. We were advised that (a) there are narrow pieces of wood supporting the west side of the roof deck, which do not align with standards of practice in the industry and will pierce the roof's membrane as weight is applied, (2) the roof substructure was laid incorrectly, preventing the free flow of water to the scuppers, and (3) already, various portions of the roof deck are loose and detached from the frame, making the roof deck unsafe to walk on. This poses a substantial risk to the safety of those in our building and our guests. Throughout the project, communication was very difficult and minimal, and they showed little to no concern for our satisfaction or the quality of their work. When we raised our concerns, they were dismissive and unresponsive, leaving us feeling frustrated and deceived. We strongly advise anyone considering hiring Shield Masonry & Roofing Inc. to NOT HIRE THEM. Their unprofessionalism, lack of expertise, and disregard for customer satisfaction have left us with a costly and dangerous mess to clean up, including having to re-do all of the work. On top of that, we reached out for a refund, and they would not comply or even respond to us despite their defective, fraudulent and grossly negligent acts and omissions, and we will need to re-perform the work with a new vendor. Please learn from our unfortunate experience and look for a reputable and trustworthy contractor to handle your roofing and deck projects who is NOT Shield Masonry & Roofing Inc. Don't let yourself fall victim to the same nightmare we endured. read more

Sam and Shield Masonry (so there's absolutely no confusion about what company did the work) were purposefully negligent. Do not use them unless you want inferior quality production from Shield. They improperly installed a trex decking that violates Chicago city code, hazardous as several floor boards are not secured against the shoddy base underneath, used the incorrect trex, parts of the frame are starting to pierce through the roof membrane. Pictures attached for reference. For context, we had assessments from several other contractors afterwards (only looked at) and they all mentioned that the boards should've been going horizontal vs vertical based on the structure of the building. read more

My building recently had work done on one side of our building. Sam from Shield Masonry was quick to reach out and schedule an in person estimates. Many of the other companies only called and asked for pictures... So it was very satisfying that he took the time to come by and assess things in person. When it came time to have the actual work done, the team showed up on time each day. They worked hard and were efficient with their time and movements. They cleaned up after each day so things weren't in total disarray and they did a thorough clean up upon completion. They even blew off dust and debris from all the individual patios! All and all was a good experience and I'd use them again! read more

Shield Masonry & Roofing and Chicago Roofing Consultants collaborated to build a new roof over my existing patio. I received a few quotes and they were the only ones who showed up on time with the roofer and contractor to take measurements, talk through what I wanted and provide a detailed quote when they said they would. They were able to start the work quickly and stayed in constant communication with me throughout the entire project, which took just under two weeks. The workers showed up every day on time and kept the work area clean. This team worked hard to deliver a quality product and they definitely delivered. I can finally sit outside on sunny/rainy days and enjoy the patio. The work was well done and reasonably priced. I would definitely work with them again on future projects. read more

I am not one to normally leave negative reviews....but Shield is a massive disappointment. People need to know how unprofessional and unskilled they are. We hired them in 2022 to change several lentils, tuck-pointing and general repairs to our brick 3 flat. Sam made all sorts of promises and guarantees and failed to come through on any of it. After the contract was signed and the deposit was paid it all went bad. There was immediate pressure to begin the work early, before we were ready....after we originally agreed to start the job around a specific time, several weeks later. I was told the job should take about 3 weeks....they finished in 1 week. Normally when a job goes fast you should be happy, right? Well, they clearly rushed through everything. There were no safety precautions taken, no clean up, no care to any of their work. Part of the agreed job was to seal the entire front of the building....that part was ever even attempted. Once the job was done, they demanded payment on the spot. There was no time to examine the work or ask questions. The entire property was left a mess....including inside where they needed access to water and electricity. After a couple of weeks we had water seeping through the windows and walls....actually worse than before they did the work. I contacted them to come have a look and make the necessary repairs. It took 3-4 weeks to come out....and they spent about an hour "caulking". Caulking was not what needed to be done....just an extremely cheap solution to make it look like they were doing something. This happened 2 additional times. I am tired of asking them to come back out to make repairs becaise it's a massive waste of time and will just end in disappointment. I have asked Shield to reimburse part of job and they refused. They will be hearing from attorney soon. read more

DO NOT USE! Horrible contractor. Their work left our roof out of code and will need to be redone, costing our building tens of thousands of dollars to fix. Used wrong materials, wouldn't fix their negligent work. Do not trust them. read more

We hired roofing to complete some timely repairs on our garage, our walkways, and our stairs. We've seen nothing but great work from the crew, who have been on our property for only a short time but have nearly completed the project. They quickly cut through our old concrete garage floors and stairs, and were able to adeptly pour the concrete the following day. Super satisfied! read more

We had numerous cracks on the front and back facade and the inner parapet wall of a three unit building, which caused leaks into the top unit. Sam and his team fully ground all cracks, removed deteriorated mortar and loose stones, and waterproofed the masonry. I had a problem with a gutter that was improperly installed that led to water damage to an exterior brick wall. Sam identified the problem with the gutter and provided very reasonable quotes for two options for repairing the wall. I went with the option that would restore the brick wall by replacing the worn out bricks, and the job was quickly added to the schedule. The Shield team arrived right on time and talked me through the work that would be done, and they were careful not to create too much of a disturbance for my neighbors next door, or leave any mess behind. The gutter was fixed a couple of days after. The job ended up with more brick needing to be replaced than originally estimated. The team had no problem picking up more brick and finishing what turned into a larger job with no adjustments to the original quote! Communication with Shield was excellent, and the quality of work very high, I would recommend them for any masonry or roofing projects. read more

Sam and his team did an amazing job with a number of projects at our house. We had a punchlist of several masonry and roofing-related items that needed to be taken care of after we bought our house, including rebuilding part of a concrete walkway, tuckpointing brick walls, replacing a termination on a flat roof, and sealing masonry / walkways. Sam's team handled all of this work in a professional manner with great communication, including answering all of the questions that we had upfront, and following up after a couple months to finish some work that could not be initially completed. Our 3 unit condo building needed tuckpointing in the front part of the building. The sides of the brick foundation were painted and needed to be scraped and repaired. I've managed the building for @ 15 years and used a lot of contractors. It's rare to have one show up promptly, offer a few different price point options and get the job done quickly. Shield Masonry did all those things! Sam and his team were super professional, courteous and the communication was excellent. I don't understand some of these other reviews on customer service. It was perfect throughout the project. On top of the communication, Shield Masonry was the lowest quote I received out of several bidders. This company has poor customer service. The owner Sam rescheduled with me 4 times. He claimed it was because of the rain. Just today he cancelled because it is Sunday. He was here yesterday and said I will come back Sunday same time. He calls me this morning and ask me to reschedule because it Sunday. If you cannot be honest with me just to get a quote how can I respect your work. He did not do anything to resolve the situation, he wanted to argue with me. PleaseNOTE! Shield Masonry responded quickly, had someone out here to look at the stairs within a day, and provided a competitive quote (we got a second quote and it was 1/3 higher). My experience with shield was perfect. They go above and beyond to make sure your experience with them is exceptional. On my property they did tuckpointing, waterproofing, replaced flashing around windows, repaired the chimney, fixed cracks in sidewalk and porch. They did everything in a day. Spoke with someone at this company and made an appointment for noon the next day. I had 100% intentions of using them if they gave a good quote and never said anything about asking for an inspection. Showed up at noon only to get a message from them saying they were too busy to take on the project. Gave no notice ahead of time and canceled. Even if their policy is to not give inspections and to only give estimates, don't you think it would have been a good move to at least let me know that before canceling exactly at the time they were supposed to show up? I mean, read this guy's response. He said that's why they didn't show up. My question is, why did he book the appointment? Why didn't he just tell me that was the policy or that he thought I was using him to get a free inspection when he confirmed the appointment? Only saying that on the response to my one-star review. Told me it was his partner's job to inform me and he forgot. Asked me to delete my review. On top of that they showed little to no remorse for wasting my time. My front steps were crumbling and I needed to do something because it was unsightly, dangerous, and potentially a reliability issue. I went through yelp and was shortly contacted by multiple vendors. I went with Shield Masonry who was giving me quick and personalized responses. Thanks to owner Samuel Johns I was able via emailed pictures to get a fair price. As soon as the weather allowed. Sam and his coworker did exactly what was expected. They patched my problem areas and put a glazed seal over the top which hopefully will help it from deteriorating further.
