We were on our way to the Vermont golden dog farm, my husband found this place for lunch for its namesake since that's his mother's madden name. I had the lobster dougie. It was the best lobster and best bread I've ever had! He had the BLT, wow the beautiful juicy tomatoes. This was a lovely lunch spot. read more

This place is such a gem. The soup of the day was amazing and the Rueben was perfect. The staff was so polite and the same woman that made our food brought it out with a smile even though she was working alone and doing it all. The music was on point, and the artwork is whimsical. I've been wanting to eat here since I saw their spectacular Instagram Photos and Food Network Challenge that Stefano did. I also love the fact they are farm-to-table. Yesterday was the perfect opportunity to go, as I often times am in Barre when they are closed. I had the soup of the day, a Tonkatsu Pork Ramen described as a "rich pork broth, porchetta, wild mushrooms, fresh ramen." He'd asked me if I wanted a soy egg, which I should have asked what that was; I assume it was a fake egg versus an egg infused with soy sauce (next time, I will inquire), so I politely declined. It was a copious bowl of rich flavor: the porchetta was outstanding. The broth itself lacked a little flavor, initially, as I think I needed to mix the seasonings more. Once I did, YUM! My friend got the The Granite City, which is house maple-bourbon turkey, cheddar, cranberry mayo, LTO on cranberry pecan whole wheat. He asked if he could have it toasted (it was so chilly outside and we'd skied all morning) and Stefano said they don't normally do so, but sure, why not. My friend said it was delicious. Stefano later told us that he hadn't thought about toasting it before, as no one had ever asked, but he bet it was good. He was also really nice; he sells the Maple Sap Soda that I cannot find elsewhere and he was willing to sell us a six-pack. I considered it and then kind of forgot. I was tired from the cold and skiing. The food is great and the cafe is toasty and warm. I highly recommend. read more

Really tasty sandwiches! The Vermonter and The Granite City are WILD. My one complaint is that they aren't open on weekends, which is really the only time I usually have to grab a bite downtown. Grateful for the rare days when I can get free to grab a sandwich during the week, but wish I could get one on a Saturday. read more

This place has great food for breakfast and lunch. I usually end up spending more than I planned - but coming home with a new hot sauce or spice. They sell so many local products to hard not to! They have everything from CBD chocolate to their own maple syrup brand. They have so many unique beverages and (no exaggeration) the best breakfast sandwich in town. Highly recommend! I stopped here a couple times on my way back home to Maine or to Mass for a late lunch and I'm never disappointed. I've tried a couple different sandwiches and wraps, as well as a custom wrap. There's always a ton of meat and fresh veggies loaded on, which is why I go a little out my way instead of stopping for crappy highway food. I've found that compared to prices in Burlington is actually less expensive and everyone is always super nice and accommodating. We also jumped at the chance to go to the special 5 course Valentine's Day dinner and meet new tell you, it was superb. Those guys know what they're doing. What is it with five star reviews today? Second one today. Maybe it is because I am on a relaxing trip to Vermont (I live in Austin Texas, but originally from the Barre area). Everything was just right. I got a Reuben. Not a huge sandwich, and not undersized. The Corned beef was really good(not too much fat, good lean meat). The cabbage was fresh, and taste was just right. Atmosphere is nice, with polished rough wood table. Even good drinks (I got a Schweppes Black Cherry), and good chips (I got Deep River brand Aged Cheddar Horseradish chips- very good). And a pre packaged cookie that was good. Just a nice overall experience. read more

Wandering the new streets of Barre I stumbled upon this gem. Owner couldn't help me decide between the lamb gyro or roast beef because they were both so good. I went with the roast beef and was blown away. The sandwich couldn't be more simple or more perfect. No need to over do it when the beef tastes this good. Great tap list with some super hard to find Vermont beers like river roost and good measure just be careful with that second lunchtime beer... can make the rest of the work day tough. I went inside for the first time and thought "this place is very expensive for a deli" , so I walked out. Then weeks later I decided to see what's so great about the deli and why they charge so much. So I ordered a Cobb Salad! This "salad" was $11! However, the ingredients were very fresh, and I like that. The owner ran out of hard boiled eggs, so he was nice enough to throw in some extra bacon, which I love (oink, oink) ! And... with me checking in with the Yelp :-P AP I got a free bag of chips! WooHoo! Since the meats are made and cured by the owner, and the vegetables may be from local farmers, their prices are not typical for a deli. But the service is slow, due to a one man show, so place the order about an hour before pick up, cuz some of us are on a deadline and can't afford to wait! Enjoy! read more

The price for a full submarine roll of 12 dollars was a reason I was avoiding going here. I finally decided to check it out and see if it was really worth 12 dollars. I do have to say it was very worth it. They put ALOT of meat in these sandwiches. The meat is very high quality and delicious. What surprised me was how good their tomatoes were. Subway may be cheaper but my body felt way better after eating half of a sub here. Plus half a sub filled me up so I get Two meals out of my purchase. I highly recommend checking this place out. Ide give them 5 stars but I still feel that the price is to high overall. Ill eat here occasionally as a treat but I couldn't go here all the time because of the price. read more

The food is all very delicious and you can tell the ingredients are fresh & real and I love that they use all local stuff!! They have a really great selection for a fairly small place!! They even have a zero alcohol "beer" that really tastes like beer and is really good!! On Sundays, their brunch items are so good- good variety of vegetarian options as well! We had the veggie scramble it was so good. Our friend had the breakfast burrito and said it was the best one she has had! The cran pecan wheat bread is one of the best breads I've ever had. The staff and most clientele there are extremely friendly and helpful with accommodating requests to change things or suggest things. Wonderful place, best cafe in central Vermont!! I swung through here on the way from Btown to Mass. It's a few miles off the highway but was looking for a better sandwich than scrubway. Stopped by the Morse Block Deli. I had the Hitchcock which is a take on the classic Italian sandwich. Perfect amount of meat and toppings. Meat was fresh as were the vegetables but what really stuck out for me was the bread. I got the sub roll which looks like a simple white bread roll but it's much more than that. just tough enough to keep the sandwich together but soft enough to make it a 5 star sandwich. With my sandwich, I had an ice cold Moosehead draft and sampled the Kombucha. Moosehead was great, Kombucha... I don't know, not terrible but probably won't make my grocery list. While there I got to witness someone take on and finish the Undertaker which is 2 lbs of pastrami on two slices of rye. Not for me but I gave props to that brave soul. On the wall they have some cool local artwork. They also have some board games if you have some time to kill. I haven't sampled the other delis in the area but I'd be willing to bet they have the best sandwiches in the area. Worth the couple extra bucks for a great local lunch. Service was very friendly . We tried just one of their signature sandwiches It was good but didn't make me go wow like I was hoping. Enough meat but I think too much on the condiments and onions. Next time will build my own to order. Pretty good sandwich shop though, glad to have it in Barre and leaving room for a rating upgrade. These guys have amazing food. The guys who run it have awesome service and my food is always fresh, cooked to order , and I love how they give traditional deli sandwiches interesting twist. Their customer appreciation program is also terrific.. The only thing I wish is that they had extended night hours and a delivery service.. Given how limited and how horrible (Simply Subs, Dominoes) the delivery options are in Barre and Montpelier adding delivery would be much appreciated.. . I try to go at least once per week read more

Morse Block Deli has been such a fantastic addition to downtown Barre. It's got locally sourced food, Boar's Head meats and cheeses, and consistently excellent specials (my husband and I just had a panini made with caramelized apples, cheddar, dill havarti, and ham on local bread. Amazing.). All told, the food is high quality, the staff are engaging, and the space is always clean and inviting. They also showcase artwork on the walls with rotating displays by different artists, which I personally think is pretty cool. They also have some good beers on tap and you can buy growlers. This was an exceptional fine dining experience and we felt like we were in the middle of the final episode of Top Chef. The flavors were bold and surprising, every component had a purpose, and the plating was beautiful. He introduced us to new dishes and spices that we hope to have again.
