There has been considerable change going on in the Hyde Park neighborhood. I'm thankful that this deli remains. Went with a combo turkey pastrami with yellow mustard on sub bread with lettuce tomato and onion. The sandwich wasn't overloaded with stuff but had good proportions and structural integrity. I really enjoyed the hot roast beef even tho it was a little overpriced at $9 ($7 would have been more appropriate). The pickle wasn't super dill but it was fairly dill. As for the interior of the establishment, it was decent. Only thing I didn't like was the absence of Wi-Fi, despite my phone picking up a signal. Looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite after visiting the Museum of Science and Industry, we decided to visit Morry's Deli. I decided to go with the triple decker that included turkey, pastrami, cheese, lettuce tomato, and a "special sauce". The sandwich was solid- and I really liked the special sauce it was served with (a little on the sweet side). I was also relieved to find that although coleslaw is listed among the ingredients in the sandwich, it was actually served on the side! I appreciated the fact that there was LOTS of chip and soda options to choose from (I hadn't had a cream soda in ages!). Morry's Deli's menu website looks better than the deli place itself. It looks like a gas station snack shop with no place to buy gas because it's on a corner of Cornell Ave by other trendy nice restaurants in that area. I didn't care for eating in there but we did because we were hungry enough to sit down and eat our meal. It's not kid friendly it's more like adults get their food and go or quickly eat it. They sell chips, good humor ice-cream, pastry desserts like pies and cookies. They also sell lotto there too. With that aside we tried two of their club sandwiches #1 Corned Beef, NY Pastrami, Swiss Cheese, Onion, w/ Dusseldorf Mustard on Rye Bread, #3 Breast of Turkey, N. Y. Pastrami, Monterey Jack Cheese, Cole Slaw, Lettuce, Tomatoes, w/ Morry's Special Dressing on Wheat Toast Both were delicious I love their Pastrami and corn beef but their #3 blew me away with their special sauce, whatever that is it's good! I would get their deli meat again but I would prefer to get it go at eat it in the comfort of my home or bring it to the Museum of Science and Industry. read more

Morry's is all about the nostalgia. That's it. There's nothing special in the way anything is prepared, the food is average and the interior is as basic as can be. It is actually less than a deli in terms of the offerings on the menu. It's the fact that the place is and has been a hub for the community, and tens of thousands of people remember the place fondly over decades and come from near and far for a sandwich from here. I placed a pick up order from here-thanks Yelp! A large chicken soup, and since it was here an Italian beef dipped with hot peppers and fries. Pick up was easy with minimal wait. The large soup was definitely that, basically a giant vat of warm, tasty comfort. The beef was good, have had worse, had better, but it was enough to kill my craving for it during my last visit. The large fries were also that providing me with more than enough to soak up all the beef jus from. I had no complaints about this place and if I'm back in Chicago again I'll probably order from there again soon. read more

This place is so tacky! It was a beautiful autumn day, and I was in the mood for chili. After calling a few places, I decided to try Morry's. This was my first time here, so I was really hoping I would like it so I could come back again. I asked about the sandwiches, and the first person working there wasn't very helpful. I asked about hot sandwiches and he mentioned he could "microwave" what otherwise was not normally served hot. No thanks. I'll stick with the chili. I ordered a large chili with cheese. They charge extra for cheese, and it amounted to almost $10. Overall I found the atmosphere dull. But I was focused on making my final decision based on the quality of the chili. I get to the register, and the next person working there is kind of rude, blurting out "What's up?!?!" which I found out of place. After I paid and received my chili, I asked for extra crackers. The size of the large chili was pretty big. I was barely given me more, so I asked again for more crackers please. This person complained and had a negative attitude about it. I couldn't believe it. We're talking about saltine crackers here. I was shocked yet amused that something so trivial caused such rude treatment of a customer. I almost lost my appetite. I concluded they are just rude in general, because when I called earlier about the chili the person I spoke with over the phone wasn't very nice either. The chili turned out to be average. So I tried Morrys today for the 1st time. Ordered the Reuben sandwich. I've always known a Reuben to have corned beef, Swiss cheese, Sauer kraut, and Thousand Island dressing. Had my mouth all set. But my mouth dropped open when I unwrapped my sandwich and saw that there was egg salad on it!! WTH? Even after I scraped it off, I couldn't stomach eating half of it. Is egg salad standard on a Reuben, and maybe I'm just not aware?? Making matters worse, the fries I ordered were refried!! (Like, when a restaurant has fries already cooked and they put them back in the oil to make them hot.) They were horrible!! Morrys is a very cool, historic, Chicago landmark. It definitely gives you that traditional deli type of feel like you see in movies. Your food is cooked to order and always fresh. I think they are a little overpriced for what they are but, it is good. I think their breakfast is better than their lunch/dinner, contrary to popular belief. read more

I stumbled upon this place a few weeks ago, and I am not very familiar with it, but I have known it for a long time. I just don't go here much and just decided to visit after craving some good sandwiches. The place is clean, and there are a few tables inside. They do not only offer sandwiches, but they also have other good and interesting things. The employee at the counter was nice and friendly, and she had recommendations about their wide and different selections on their amazing menu. I just ordered a sandwich, and the service was pretty fast. I must say that the sandwich is a bit pricier compared to its small portion. I thought it would be a huge portion considering its expensive price, but it was not. Even so, the sandwich was really delicious and satisfied my cravings. She's hasn't aged a year in eleven years, although she looks different, more mature. She was always mature, but when you're mature and find out what works and what doesn't work in life, you get less serious--if you're good at life, that is. And Tara is good at life. So she's serene, knows what she wants, and can take things in stride. Two hundred years ago, she would have been a nun. That's how self-assured she is. And she might have even been a nun now. Or, well, you don't even know what I mean. Morry's Deli is better than you think it will be. The service is good, and the people are friendly. I was shocked they had any kind of non-egg-salad veggie offering, but they did. A little too much Styrofoam and a little too little seating space for my tastes, but I was a visitor in Chicago, that fairest of fair cities to visit, and yet--and yet. I tried to get Esther to rent an apartment down the street. She'd be closer to CTU and the long lectures that she still loves. Like so many Hyde Park establishments, over-rated. To be fair, their sandwiches are fair. I've had the Reuben and the Lox, which were decent enough. This evening, I tried the hot Pastrami, and it was a disaster. The meat was feathery, mostly end bits with not a single substantial slice in there. The sandwich was easily the most carelessly made one I've ever had, and the Rye bread was insubstantial and incapable of holding up to the ingredients. Absolute crap. Nice staff, and it's a friendly neighbourhood place, which is why the two stars. And the previous sandwiches were fine. I'm wondering if the food just gets worse as the day drags on. I bet my four-year old daughter that Morry's Deli had better sandwich combos than Jimmy John's. She likes Jimmy John after nursery school. I liked Morry's after high school in the mid 1980s. She ordered a roast beef combo with no mayo at the latter restaurant. I ordered a roast beef and corned beef combo at the former. I lost. Despite the fact that the restaurants are on the same side of 55th Street and are only separated by a street, Metra tracks and an alley, Jimmy John's was a better experience. My daughter's request for no mayo was followed there. When I asked for lettuce, but no tomato at Morry's, the gentleman at the store blurted out "What do you want on your sandwich?" My memory may be failing, but I do not remember that ever happening in 1985. The chips at Morry's were smaller than at Jimmy John's. The can of soda was smaller than the fountain drink at Jimmy John's. I had to admit to my young daughter that she was right. Morry's used to be a favorite of my friends during our high school years. Like the hair I had back then, like the disclosure document of a purported commodity trading advisor now well known as a financial advisor, that Morry's cannot be found anymore. read more

When I was a child, my Pops would take the family here for an EGG McMORRY on Saturday mornings. Well, it had been a good 20 years since I had one and I decided to stop by this past Saturday and let me just say the EGG McMORRY tastes exactly the same as it did when I was a child. I could have cried but I was with a guy so I held it together. On a short visit to Hyde Park on 10/25/2012, I walked the neighborhood and stopped in. I ordered a pastrami sandwich on onion bread with sliced onions, cheddar (resembled sun tanned Swiss cheese) and mustard. I have eaten many sandwiches in my lifetime and this is way at the bottom of the scale. The place is not very clean and the menu is confusing (extra cost for onions, peppers, etc. ~ huh?). I live in the SF Bay area with plenty of amazing sandwich joints. But this one makes me wonder why people eat sandwiches at all. The bread was dry and suspiciously stale (did anyone check the expiration date prior to making my sandwich?). The pastrami that was lukewarm to my palate tasted like day old bacon, was extremely thin and proportionally small. It was also expensive ($8.99). If University of Chicago students do not eat there very much, then our educational system is truly working because they obviously know more than the rest of us that visited there. I walked across the street to Cornell Park, took one bite and fed the reminder of my sandwich to an awful skinny squirrel with an obvious eating disorder. read more

Maybe the price is a bit more, but its chicago and I'm new so I understand (a heart attack is a character builder here). My husband and I normally head to Z&H when we want to grab sandwiches in Hyde Park, but on New Years Eve they'd closed early so we headed over to Morry's. What good fortune for us! We might never have stopped in and what a shame that would have been. Just the best, wet, slathered, moist, drippy Reuben.
