Moroccan Bites catered some of the food for a wedding rehearsal I was part of recently. I went to pick up the food and they had the order right and the food was hot. While I waited, they were very friendly, offering me free Moroccan tea (green tea with mint) and it was delicious. The food, lamb with rice, and several types of baklava, were all very good. I had never even heard of this place before but after this visit I definitely plan to have a meal there. It was also encouraging to see all the awards this restaurant has received, including: SA's Top 100 retaurants, Best Moroccan in SA, and Food Network endorsements. read more

I love getting the opportunity to broaden my edible horizons and try new cuisine from other parts of the world. It was in a strip mall in Leon Springs where I got the opportunity to sample some of the goods that come from Morocco by way of Moroccan bites, a new place catching the attention of the San Antonio press through positive reviews in The Current and Express-News. Its a little more than a cafe with a few indoor seats and fewer outdoor seats. They were mostly full on the Friday evening I visited, though it never got so bad that people were waiting to be seated. The floor is manned by one poor overtasked server who was trying her best to serve everyone, but was ultimately slowing things down - I grabbed an open table as soon as I walked in, but I waited at least ten minutes before she got around to me. Before I ordered I was served come complimentary appetizers - small bowls of lentils and chickpeas in varying tomato-based sauces. They were very similarly flavored, with consistency and a hint of spiciness being the only differentiating factors, far as I could tell, but they were tender and good. They were not the last lentils of the meal, as I ordered an appetizer serving in an onion and beef broth, which was a more familiar presentation of the legume and ones which I munched throughout my meal. They proved to be almost too much to handle when considering the main course, the lamb and cous cous dish, prepared simply with a wonderfully braised lamb shank surrounded by a mountain of cous cous and topped with well-cooked carrot, zucchini, and potato. The cous cous was almost an impossible yellow color, thanks to a drizzling of olive oil, I think, over everything. I made short work of the vegetables and meat, though a good portion of the cous cous was left for the trash. It's a meal that's only served on Friday's, but it's worth scheduling the time - this restaurant sat on my bookmarks for over two months before I found a free Friday on which to visit. Moroccan Bites is small - more the size of a cafe, but they're dishing out big flavors and their authenticity can't be beat. There's not a better Moroccan place in town, partly because there isn't more than two other restaurants in the city, and partly because they're very good. Sure, there may be a bit of a wait when it's busy, but when you can clearly see everyone working hard to meet demand, it's worth it. read more

I should've checked before I went, but Moroccan Bites does not serve alcohol. That's totally cool; I don't *need* alcohol to have a good time (I'm starting to sound like an after school special), but this particular dinner was a meeting of my book club. As anyone who is in a book club can attest, one of the biggest draws of book club is drinking wine and talking about complex issues and your feelings. Also, just by design, places that serve alcohol tend to be a little more patient with people who are sitting and talking for awhile if they're ordering refills. That didn't seem to be the case at this place. The food itself was decent. I got the meat combo plate, with lamb, beef, and chicken. The meat was decently spiced, although the chicken was a little dry. The rice was fine, the fries were average. We did have a great hummus appetizer that actually was full chickpeas instead of ground chickpeas. The flavor was wonderful, and the bread it was served with was great. I had a small pot of the mint tea, which is one of my favorite things, and it was pretty good. The service was lacking. We had a really hard time getting our server to come back to our table to refill drinks or check on us. When we had someone join our table, she didn't seem to notice because she didn't get her drink order or bring her silverware. We kept waving to try to get server attention all night, and felt really rude doing it, but still couldn't really get the attention of anyone. After we'd finished our meal and had been sitting for about 30 minutes, we were finally able to wave someone over who told us that you pay at the counter. At the counter we noticed they had amazing looking desserts in a bakery case, which is too bad, because if someone had come to our table and offered us dessert, we would have ordered it. We ended up going somewhere else for wine and dessert after. This could have been a better experience with better service, but it was decent. read more

Tired of frequenting Indian places around the Medical Center, I finally paid Moroccan Bites an overdue visit. Though not the most flavorful food I've ever had, this is as close to authentic Moroccan as it gets. The restaurant -- part of an unremarkable shopping center -- is quite beautiful inside. Upon entering, you can choose a table to your left (original property) or right (newly built extension), or ask to dine outside on one of several storefront tables. The left side includes 2 "VIP areas" that are heavily decorated and roped off from everyday use. While the first one sits near the front with abundant windows, the other appears more of an enclosed space located near the back. The right side -- large, spacious, and very well appointed -- houses yet more tables, not to mention a larger dessert case full of Moroccan baklava, basboosa, kenafa, and various cakes and pastries. Some may mistake the waitstaff here as short or impersonal; however in all honesty, they're anything but. I attribute said dissatisfaction simply to customers who perhaps walk in expecting loud, "slapstick" Texas Roadhouse-style tableside service. That's just not the vibe at Moroccan. Like I always say, treat/chat/joke with your servers like they're family and, more often than not, they'll follow suit, even calling you sweetheart too many times. [Is that a bad thing?] It's simple social skills, really. Again, the food ultimately is NOT the most flavorful nor amazing food I've ever come across... and just because Guy loved it doesn't mean I have to feel obligated to likewise praise. Yet I will say that nothing disappoints, save for portion sizes maybe. In the spirit of another Yelper, for the money you dish over by meal's end, you can't help but wonder if your stomach -- and taste buds -- are genuinely THAT satisfied. I love this restaurant and its lamb shank!!! They have the best lamb shank dish ever!! The flavor is amazing with cinnamon and prune, which was very sweet and made the dish so much more delicious. I loved the layers of flavor and just couldn't get enough of it. The lamb meat was braised with flavorful juice and cooked to become very tender and fall apart easily. Yet, the meat was still juice and full of flavor. The dish was amazing!! I found it interesting to have sweet flavor with lamb and was surprised how well it went together. I had the lamb shank with Moroccan bread, which was home made by the restaurant. The bread was hot, soft, and fluffy. It was perfect to soak up all the good flavor in the lamb dish and enjoy the full effect of the dish. I also tried their rice which was pretty flavorful as well. I also loved their mint tea!! It was hot, sweet, and with good balance of mint flavor. It was very soothing and relaxing. The mint tea also balances out the meaty dish. I highly recommend to try their mint tea. Update: came again for a birthday dinner party. The appetizers were awesome. The carrots were surprisingly delicious (really great herb mix). Bread was warm and soft with a nice crust (unlike last time). I wanted to be adventurous and ordered the chicken pastilla. It's super weird. The chicken is sweet and it was wrapped in phyllo dough and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. If you don't want to eat breakfast for dinner - avoid this item. A friend bought me their macarons which I liked so I came here to get dinner. I got the kefta tagine with Moroccan bread. It was tasteless and a little dry. But I've never had Kefta before so I wasn't sure what to expect. It just wasn't for me. My friend and I also got the mint tea. It was super sweet and left a weird aftertaste in my mouth. It was served in a cute little tea set though. Service and ambience overall were great. There are roped off areas that you can reserve for parties. They looked like a ton of fun. I came here because of Guy Fieri and I was expecting a really flavorful meal. I have to say it was just ok. I ordered the Morroccan couscous with lamb. The lamb had a wonderful texture, incredibly tender but I felt it was lacking some seasoning overall for the money and my expectations it was just sort of bland. Maybe the other dishes with lamb are more of an explosion of taste. I think this place would make for a really interesting date and the desserts look fantastic! I am giving them a 4 star rating because of their friendly service. The two women attending to us were very nice (yet one of them was super bossy). We started with the Moroccan hummus which was okay. Then we also ordered the vegetarian tagini that had the choice of side which we chose bread. The tagini was flavorless. The meats were good with chicken being the best. I am no expert on Moroccan food. In fact, i had never tasted it before. Like many reviewers, I learned about this restaurant from the triple D show. So I was pretty excited to try it out. I came here with my coworker for lunch on a very slow day. There were only two tables including ours. The restaurant looks very authentic and has lots of unique decors which I really like. The server/owner were super friendly and attentive. She took our orders very quickly and we didn't wait for long to get our food. I ordered the lamb shank that came with couscous. The lamb was very tender but a little sweet to my liking. I really enjoyed the date in my lamb dish though but felt the lamb could use more seasoning. My favorite part of the meal is definitely the mint tea! It is absolutely A MUST if you ever visit this restaurant. The tea is not like anything I've tasted before. It was so fresh and minty. Soooo good! Now I am thinking about trying to make some at home. My overall experience was quiet satisfying. However, I didn't feel the food was THAT substantial and memorable. I have eaten here a couple times over the years and the food has always been good. Went again today for my birthday lunch and it was great as always. I wanted to specifically recognized how awesome the service was. I was dining with my husband and 3 small children. Going out to eat isn't always enjoyable with the kids but the way she interacted with my kids made it very enjoyable. In San Antonio for a mini vacation. Stopped here to try something new, especially since it had such positive reviews on Yelp and FindMe Gluten-free. The owner was very welcoming and explained the menu, also gave us suggestions. We ordered her recommendations and were not disappointed. Lamb shank over rice fell right off the bones, practically melted in my mouth. The gravy was delicious too. My wife ordered a mix plate- sausage, chicken, beef, and lamb kabobs, came with rice and lentils also. Everything was tender and flavorful! I would love to give 0 star if I could. I and my friend went to the store near by morrocan bites. We parked our vehicle outside "public parking lot," close to this restaurant, but not in a reserved spot. We got yelled at from the lady who was moving stuff inside. She said we made it difficult for them to move the stuff and it doesn't make sense we parked here and shop all the way over there. My friend even apologized but this lady still kept yelling at us. She even threatened that she would break our vehicle. We parked our vehicle on the yellow spot next to her red car but she was really pissed she had to walk a few feet far. Anyhow you don't have the right to claim a parking spot on public parking or yell at someone who is park in front of your restaurant which is not reserved spot or what is not yours. This lady was really rude! She might go through the menopause, feel bed for people who have to work with her. I was about to take the video. I would never come here again! What I ordered mentioned nothing of warm celery in the hummus, also yes I didn't know the difference of two hummus's but I would have never ordered this if I had known celery was in it. I went in and there was no making this right on their part! Fine okay I get it I tried to be understanding and left. I still had potato salad but the potatoes were NOT even cooked!!! My husband however said his sandwich was good and he ate my hummus though he said this place wasn't Triple D worthy and we wonder how this establishment even got on the show. So I give this place one star and the hubs liked his food but wouldn't come back so that brings us up to 2 stars. My brother in law ate dinner here and called us to come join them for dessert (we had already had dinner). Oh my goodness! The dessert was absolutely DELICIOUS!!!! Homemade, melt in your mouth perfection and went great with their coffee. Highly recommend! (And bro-in-law says dinner was delish too) We also had amazing service. The one who does the baking helped us and she was so kind, extremely helpful and had such a fun personality. It made for a great cherry on top for our experience! :) We will be back. Its been over a year since i was last there so i decided to go back again to try the items and see if i still liked this place as much as i did and boy it did not dissapoint! We started off with carrots in morrocan spices (it had a great citrusy flavor mixes in), a dish with eggplant, bell peppers, and spices (i think the name started with a z) and morrocan bread. Since these were appetizers, the portions were small but enough for the two of us while we waited for our main dish. We ordered a chicken pastilla which was out of this world! (i recommend ordering it as soon as you get there because it takes at least 25mim wait... Well worth it!) Even hours after i was still dreaming about how delicious it was! It had a mixture of chicken, ginger, spices, egg, almonds etc covered in a phyllo dough, which was flaky and light, covered in confectioner sugar and cinnamon. The dish had overall sweeter notes which blended incredibly well with the savoryness of the chicken and dough, while the cinnamon gave it the right amount of seasoning. To end the lunch, we had the pistachio baklava with shredded dough. I loved how crunchy and packed with postachios it was. It is great to see when places like this, with amazing food and staff thrive and still maintain their home-y feel. Since my last visit, the place has expanded and is about to open a new area with more delicious desserts. Also i thought it was really great to have the owner there overlooking everything. This place deserves five stars because of its phenomenal service and outstanding food. While I have never been to Morocco, I get the sense I've traveled there when I walk in. You are immediately greeted by either the daughter of the owner, or the owner herself. The daughter or her mom are more than willing to answer any and all questions you have. The mother is fascinating and you can't help but fall in love with her as much as her restaurant. She speaks five languages. She clearly is educated and came to the states and opened a restaurant. She has great customer service skills and I've felt inspired by her. Now the food. We ordered the lamb shanks with prunes, the medina meat combo, and the Madghout with saffron rice. All was amazing the medina meat combo was exactly what you expected, but I won't get it again simply because the other dishes are so good. The lamb shank with prunes was my favorite. It was full of flavors that were layered between a subtle sweetness from the prunes, but a salty full of spice flavors. The broth was fatty from the lamb and the lamb was so tender. No knife needed. The lamb fell off the bone. The Madghout was also very tender. This was more of a tomato based stew. The lamb was tender and the stew broth was thick and full of flavor. Lastly, their saffron rice was very good and goes oh so well with the brothy dishes. This place can't come better recommended. A great find in San Antonio. Eating here is a true Moroccan experience. The tea is made with sugar and fresh mint leaves - it's a MUST have. The owners are extremely friendly and talented at cooking and baking and their dessert selection is AMAZING. they have Nutella cheesecake, baklava, chocolate mousse, and delicious cakes. As for the entrees, I absolutely love the lamb tajin with prunes and almonds. It is served in a delicious gravy like sauce with rice. Also I recommend the hummus here. It's different than the creamy one, with the chick peas not blended- amazing flavor. The bread it comes with is so delicious too. I moved and I'm writing this review because I miss it so much. I was in the mood for some Merguez sausages. These are either made with lamb or mix of lamb & beef and are spicy sausages originating from North Africa. You can also find them throughout France. They are normally served in a French baguette with an added hot sauce called harissa for those that like it hot. I ordered the Merguez plate and a piece of Moroccan bread for carry out. The plate consists of 4 Merguez sausages, saffron rice and a Moroccan salad (carrots, beets, lettuce). The sausages are made in the restaurant with natural casings using a mix of beef and lamb. The sausages were excellent. The saffron rice very flavorful and the salad delicious. Only disappointment was the restaurant forgot to include some harissa sauce with the carry out order even though I had asked for it. read more

If you're wondering what in the heck it is, it's shredded chicken and a nut paste (I think almonds and cashews, could be wrong) stuffed inside a phillo dough that's been dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon. I may not be making it sound great, but it is SO good. And very unique in terms of flavor - definitely a must try. The Kebob combo was okay. Nothing fabulous. I've had better kabobs elsewhere, so I wouldn't bother ordering it again. It was a combination of chicken, lamb, and beef. The chicken was bland, the lamb was tender but light in terms of flavor, and the beef had a unique flavor that I didn't much care for (my husband liked it though) The mint tea at the end is something I do recommend! It was fabulous! The first sip was a little surprising but it gets addicting pretty quick!
