I visited this restaurant on Sunday Super Bowl. If you know me you know how much I love culture and food! I walk in to see a group sitting at the bar ordering food and watching the Super Bowl. All Ethiopian! It was so heart warming to see them enjoying their time eating and drinking. Later on they had the coffee ceremony which was interesting to watch and the whole restaurant was smelling like incense. The waitress was so friendly so is the group She helped us ordering to get a little bit of both worlds vegetarian and a meat dish We got the veggie #2, awaze tibs and the ebu Shiro. And I tried the tea since I was under the weather. Everything was absolutely delicious. We did prefer the vegetarian options over the meat dish. Wow. This place is such good stuff it left me speechless. I didn't have words because the food was so delicious that I couldn't think of anything but how good it was. So unique to the boring normal fast food spot. The flavors and freshness, were absolutely stunning. I've never had a place this great in a long time and all I do is go out to eat! On top of the mesmerizing meal, the restaurant is so nicely decorated. Tables clean, everything was nicely set out, and they had TVS with some very nice videos playing. The service was so kind as well, like this place was spot on in every way. Our server was consistently visiting us and making sure our needs were beyond met. She was even kind enough to inform us on the dish and the culture. If you are looking to venture out into a new and different spot I would definitely recommend this place over any other! read more

I have to start off with this. We are a family of adventurous eaters. The kiddo prefers paella over Mac and cheese, can eat pounds of crawfish, and the misses loves all Greek food and goat cheese. The reason I bring this up, there are rare occasions where we find certain foods to be such an acquired taste and we, well plain didn't like it. This was one. My mistake, was that I thought this would be like a Nigerian restaurant I ate at years ago. I know now that depending where you go, the region will offer different foods. Think the USA, like the difference between New York food versus Cajun food. Enough of the explaining, let's get to the review. First the place is so quaint and cozy. It was super clean, and the atmosphere was very friendly. The staff were very sweet! We started off with both of the sambusa. They were so delicious and amazing!! Paired with the chili sauce, it was such a promising start. We had the #30,#31, and doro wot. First the presentation and the service...top notch. Both of the beef dishes were Amazing! Perfectly cooked and seasoned! Can't complain about them, other than the portion size for the price. Of note, there are no sides offered with any of the dishes, other than an ungodly amount of injera. Ok, so to the injera. I know that sometimes we grow up in culture, and we become used to some flavors and customs that are not everyone's cup of tea. The injera was so sour, it took over the meal. It was so hard to get over it. It overpowered every bite. It was in every crevice of our mouth. It was also slightly off putting in texture. I mean we tried and tried, but we just did not like it nor understand it. The doro wot was also disappointing. We've had this dish, many times. Here it was not as flavorful or memorable. It's like it was missing something. Not an expert in this cuisine, it tasted different than any wot we've had before. Again value for food...it was expensive for what we were served. Also no sides. I ordered some rice, hoping to save some aspect of the meal. I was hoping for some great jollof rice. They did not have it, and were brought some very plain rice. I would've even preferred fufu to the injera. We saw a patron get their meal with plain bread and wish we had asked if they had other options. Sadly, this will be our one and only visit here. read more

I got the Vegan combo #2 (potato stew, lentil, whole lentil, green beans and carrots, beets, collard greens). One of the best Ethiopian restaurants I've ever had and it's vegan friendly. Thanks to the fast acting restaurant owner and her staff, we almost missed the opportunity to dine in the restaurant today at 10am. Although Google and Yelp still have the old hours, the restaurant is now open at 11am instead. I have never eaten so many delicious vegetable in one meal, my favorites vegetables were potato stew, cabbage, chickpeas and roasted beets. But will certainly try the green beans and carrots next time around. The meat Doro Wot was my favorite dish today but will certainly return to try out more dishes in future. The food and the amazing service are certainly worth to make a special trip to visit the restaurant. read more

The restaurant is very nice and clean inside. It's newer, so I think they're working on building up their clientele. The service was great and everyone was really friendly. I had the chicken tips and the plate came with rice and salad. It was a generous portion and very flavorful. I tried the Ethiopian coffee and it was awesome...reminded me of espresso, but with a much more robust flavor profile.I hope they make it because we need more variety in SA. read more

My family just visited Amen and we were not left disappointed. It was our first visit so we decided to splurge a little more than we would normally to get a feel of a variety of the dishes. Everything was delectable! Everything came out fresh and hot. The injera was fresh and had great taste. We are Texan through and through now but we are from the Portland, OR area which has some strong established amazing Ethiopian restaurants. Amen's food waat that level with taste and freshness. The service was wonderful and the staff were so welcoming kind, and attentive. The restaurant was clean and decorated well with class. I love Ethiopian food and was so sad that Rehoboth shut down. My friend and I were craving Ethiopian on night so we were Googling and up pops Amen! Hadn't heard that a new Ethiopian restaurant had opened up so we were stoked!. We were drooling before we even got there. The staff is super sweet and it's so cute inside. As Ethiopian cuisine enthusiasts we were excited to find this new restaurant in San Antonio and were quite happy with our first lunch experience there. We ordered the raw kitfo (my husband's all-time favorite Ethiopian dish), veggie combo and doro wat and all were prepared perfectly and had great flavor. The injera was also well made (fluffy, slightly tangy and moist), which isn't always a guarantee at these places. The serving sizes are perhaps a bit smaller than at other Ethiopian restaurants but not to an insulting degree. Service was fast and very friendly. We had a fantastic lunch at Amen Cafe yesterday! We did a family style meal with Beef Tibs and a veggie platter, all served atop the wonderful Injera bread. The server was very attentive and the Chef even came out to see how we enjoyed our meal. The atmosphere was clean, bright, and cheery. It's so much fun to eat the traditional way using the bread to pick up the food, but I'm sure they would provide silverware for the less adventurous. We will definitely be going back! read more

The food was wonderful, so flavorful and delicious!! The meat was tender and ample in the dishes!! My niece had never had Ethiopian and she rated it a 10/10, her favorite thing on her trip to SA, she could eat it once a week. The server would bright and lovely with great recommendations, she was truly a delight. When we brought leftovers she asked if we would like anything else to go. Ethiopian food is underrated or overlooked generally, but Amen is so bright and clean it should be a role model for all others from there. Their spices are wicked good and fresh, and spicy mit-Mita is robust for those wanting their tongue to sizzle. Amen's food is clean and portions plentiful. Their injera is perfect. Please try the Amen Kitfo (my fave!). My only complaint is that its 45 minutes from home so maybe I need to move closer.
