Fresh whole fish on display in ice, live lobsters crawling around the display, and the largest head-on shrimp I have ever eaten that I personally picked out to have cooked, along with a whole perfectly seasoned red snapper, and melt-in-your mouth eggplant with tomato. What to make of the Boathouse Rooftop?…read more Over the summer, my partner and I debated trying out this new eatery/bar on Steinway. The Boathouse replaced the Luna Asian Bistro, which was a snobby, poorly run Asian fusion bar and restaurant with a nice view of LIC, Astoria, and Manhattan. It was replaced by this current eatery, bar, and hookah lounge, which calls itself an upscale Mediterranean restaurant, which, honestly, it is not. We were constantly reminded and advised that we had to make an appointment and leave a credit card on file. This turned out to be a very hard sell, and I would very strongly advise readers not to follow this recommendation and just show up -if you get a space and they have a very large open-air rooftop, just walk in early when they open or during non-peak hours. Since it was the weekend before Labor Day, we took a chance and were automatically sent up the rooftop. We noticed the stairs to the roof looked like they needed repair, and it was hard to get back to the lounge because they were very creaky and worn. When we arrived on the rooftop, we wanted comfortable seating with shade. We explained this to the waiter, who showed us to some comfortable seating that then turned out to be in direct sunlight -this was a hot day, and we had to move several times. We also explained we wanted to be away from large groups smoking Hookah and found a corner seat on the northeast side of the rooftop. Unfortunately, we were about 50ft away from a large group smoking Hookah, and the smell wafted in our direction. The smoke wasn't overwhelming, just a little unpleasant. Seating was comfortable and tables spacious. We ordered lamb slides, hummus pablano, short ribs Benedict, tiramisu, and, for drinks, a Blue Horizon. The dishes were appropriate for a brunch menu, but we still think the restaurant could have offered many more choices with a little imagination. The low-key advertising for Hookah considerably pulls down their rating, in my opinion, and I am not sure calling themselves a Mediterranean restaurant is quite accurate. Walking back down from the rooftop was a little problematic. I noticed the stairs were a little worn out and easy to slip on. Perhaps they hadn't finished upgrading from the previous restaurant, but for us, that's a big NO NO. You can't ignore poor safety standards, which could open them up to all kinds of issues. It is a shame because these two issues significantly lower my grades, plus the hustling for reservations by putting down your credit card is a BIG NO NO. You can avoid all this nonsense by avoiding peak hours. We will NOT BE BACK!!

But I, somehow, learned its Spanish style Chinese food, and was sold. It a quick joint with many orders leaving the kitchen. Food always fresh. My go to meal is a large house special fried rice. Different/multiple proteins in each bite, from start to finish. And OMG busting with flavor! I haven't had fried rice from the regular Chinese restaurant since having theirs.
