    Nigiri sushi
    Arthur E.

Minimalist, sleek vibes - but the value doesn't meet its price. First, I'll preface that this is for the à la carte menu and not the omakase experience. Perhaps the menu and experience is a home run there. Went for a Saturday evening dinner - there might be some street parking, but with the cold weather we opted for valet - $15 I believe. Was greeted very warmly and was brought to our table and was served immediately. The vibe was dark and dim in a good way - very date-y vibes. There's a lot of space between guests so it def feels a bit intimate. Ordered a highball - was really refreshing, one of the highlights of the evening. For food, had the toro tartare, a variety of nigiri sushi, a cut roll, and the jidori chicken. The toro tartare was very well made and the caviar was a nice touch to it. The nigiri sushi was a bit underwhelming - the sushi cuts weren't bad, it just lacked any flavor to it. They were a bit thinly sliced so perhaps that's why. The cut roll was fine. The jidori chicken was very well made - thought that was my fav dish of the meal. Was a bit disappointed overall with dinner so opted to eat dessert elsewhere. It's not that the food was bad - it was pretty good. I think for the price though, you would expect a bit more from the meal - particularly the nigiri sushi. You also have to pay for ginger here! Having the chicken be the best part of the meal was def disappointing. Was originally hoping to try the omakase at some point, but after this experience I probably would opt out of paying the $450 meal.

Chef Morihiro "Mori" Onodera's new spot on Sunset absolutely lives up to the Michelin shine. Mori has been a heavyweight in LA's sushi world for decades, and you can feel that confidence the second you walk in. This isn't a trendy flash-in-the-pan opening. It's a master at work. On top of that, the LA Times ranked Morihiro #7 on its 101 Best Restaurants list: one of the highest-ranked sushi spots in the entire city. That kind of recognition doesn't happen by accident :) PARKING There's valet ($20) and you're basically at the entrance the second you step out of the car: very high-heels friendly! No long walks, no awkward curb situations. You arrive and start your night. There are EV charging stations right out front too. No circling the block, no stress. You can park on the street too if you want. VIBE The space is warm. Spacious. Elegant without trying too hard. Low lighting, warm wood, romantic but not stuffy. It feels elevated but still comfortable. SERVICE JJ checked us in and immediately set the tone. The attention to detail was appreciated: a small box for my handbag. Cassie took care of us at the table and guided us through the sake list with great recommendations. FOOD We started with the miso, oshinko, sauteed mushrooms, and nasu agedashi. Clean flavors, perfectly balanced. The sauteed mushrooms stood out for me, I could've had that with a bowl of rice and happily called it my main. Because of some allergies, we opted for a la carte nigiri instead of omakase. Every piece was pristine. The fish tasted fresh like it had a passport stamped that morning. We also ordered the tempura and sakura smoked jidori chicken, and the tempura deserves its own moment. Light, crisp, zero grease. It makes you rethink every other tempura you've had. I could've easily ordered a 2nd plate without hesitation. The toro tartare was also very good and nicely balanced. COCKTAILS All the cocktails we had were just perfect. All 10/10. Margarita - my fave of the evening. I think the rice bran mellowed the citrus and made it silky. Ichigo - their take on a Negroni, smooth and very tasty. The strawberry taste was very subtle. I was worried it'd taste like a "strawberry drink" but it doesn't. Mori's martini (has chartreuse in it!) - much better than a regular martini! DESSERT Of course we had dessert. We got the chocolate mochi, not too sweet at all which I loved. Big fan. We also ordered the panna cotta. If you're deciding between the two, get the panna cotta. It's very unique and the melon is delicious in every bite. It's one of those desserts you keep going back to for "just one more spoonful." This was a wonderful dinner. Memorable, thoughtful, and truly a treat.

*** 1 Michelin Star *** ** Los Angeles Times 101 Best Restaurants (2025): #7 ** As the top ranked sushi bar in Los Angeles, and one of only seven that currently has a Michelin star, Morihiro not only lives up to the hype, but manages to far exceed it every time I visit. This past Friday was my first time since they moved locations from Atwater Village. I was very excited to see Chef Morihiro "Mori" Onodera at his new space off Sunset, and of course, the food did not disappoint. Having been to nearly all of the best sushi bars in and around Los Angeles (including Sushi Kaneyoshi, Sushi Takeda, Sushi Ginza Onodera, Shunji, Shin Sushi, Sushi Zo, Nozawa Bar, Sushi Tsujita, Matsumoto, Sushi I-NABA, Mori Sushi, Yasu Beverly Hills, Asanebo, and many more), I can confidently say Morihiro is the best in town. In fact, Chef Mori makes the best sushi l've had outside of Japan. For those that don't know, Mori is the original Chef-Owner of Mori Sushi, the legendary Michelin-starred sushi restaurant that many considered to be the best in all of Los Angeles. Mori has long been regarded as one of the top sushi chefs in LA, being one of just a few to earn a Michelin Star in this city in both 2008 and 2009, prior to his temporary retirement as a chef. Since opening Morihiro, he has consistently earned a Michelin Star and has again been widely regarded as the best in the city. What distinguishes Mori's sushi from the rest? His attention to detail is unrivaled and he sources only the highest quality ingredients. Mori's rice (shari) is some of the best you'll ever try, having gone through extensive quality control. He is obsessed with rice and it's apparent. The temperature, seasoning, texture, density, and consistency is flawless. The seafood quality, preparation techniques, knife skills, and presentation is about as good as it gets. His sushi is some of the most balanced and flavorful you'll find. To eat, we ordered a la carte at the counter. Nigiri included Baby Amberjack (Shiokko), Yellowtail (Buri), Golden Eye Snapper (Kinmedai), Lean Tuna (Akami), Semi Fatty Tuna (Chutoro), Fatty Tuna (Otoro), Gizzard Shad (Kohada), Spanish Mackerel (Aji), Barracuda (Kamasu), Geoduck (Mirugai), Surf Clam (Aoyagi), and more. In addition, we tried the Agedashi Nasu, a few traditional tuna cut rolls, and a himokyu roll. Everything we had was prepared to perfection and delicious. If looking for the best sushi restaurant in Los Angeles, you found it here at Morihiro. Chef Mori's sushi is simply unrivaled and definitely my all-time favorite. Though their new location is a bit bigger and offers plenty of tables, I highly recommend reserving a seat at the counter to maximize your experience. The ambiance, decor, and service are also impeccable. Don't forget to order a signature cocktail or a perfectly poured Suntory draft.

Parking is horrible-but there is valet. It's a very spacious but yet intimate restaurant. There's bar seating but most of the seats are occupied by omakase. They offer omakase (serve by the chef himself) and regular seatings-serve by his assistant chefs. It's very traditional Japanese sushi style so if you're looking for more fusion, modern or creative (trendy way), this won't do it for you. They do have California rolls (on th regular menu) but there's still an authentic twist to it-not something you can get at typical Japanese fusion restaurants. We opted for the omakase "set" menu and everything was amazing-quality and freshness was on point. Chef uses his own sushi rice that's cultivated in Japan and he prepares it fresh everyday. You also are gifted a small bag to take home. What amazes me is that even the dishes is handmade by chef. There's art to it but it still holds its true Japanese roots in the dishes. Definitely would come back just for a quick bite or the omakase.

    Mori-San!!!

Woot woot FIRST review!!! Whenever someone asks me where I go for sushi, it's simple - weekend trip to Tokyo!!! Unfortunately after 3 children, that's easier said than done. Lucky for my belly, Los Angeles has Mori-San!!!! Since the first time I tried his omakase, I never bothered going elsewhere. Every bite is incredible thanks to the freshest ingredients. I am obsessed with the shrimp tartare that is usually served with its own roe, caviar and whichever truffle is in season. I have to admit, I get spoilt to the next level - there are times when Mori-San makes an extra portion and puts it into a hand roll for me. I would bathe in this if I could!!! Morihiro recently moved locations and as much as I miss the old spot, their new place is way more laid back and chill. There's no stuffiness and honestly you don't feel like you're at a 1 Michelin Starred restaurant. Vibes feel like your neighborhood sushi spot. Also with this move they've changed up the menu. There's an a la carte menu now so you're not only restricted to a $400 omakase. I keep telling myself I'll try the new menu but that would mean I'm cheating on my omakase so that'll never happen!!! Also a much welcomed change is the new cocktail menu. I tried the lychee martini and it was delish and quite strong! Parking is super easy unless the Dodgers are playing but Morihiro also has their own valet!

Dining at Morihiro last night was nothing short of extraordinary--an experience that felt both deeply traditional and quietly innovative. From the moment we were seated, there was a calm, almost meditative rhythm to the evening that set the tone for what was to come. Each course was a study in precision and restraint. The fish was impeccably fresh, with a clarity of flavor that spoke to both the sourcing and the craftsmanship behind it. What stood out most was the balance--nothing was overworked or overly adorned. Every piece of sushi felt intentional, allowing the natural character of the ingredients to shine through. The rice, OMG!!, often overlooked elsewhere, was exceptional here--perfectly seasoned and delicately warm, forming the ideal foundation for each bite. Subtle touches, like freshly grated wasabi and thoughtful pacing, elevated the entire meal. Service was warm, attentive, and deeply respectful of the dining experience, never intrusive yet always present at the right moments. Morihiro isn't just dinner--it's a quiet, refined journey that lingers with you long after the last bite. A truly memorable evening.

You have to try the omakase when Mori san will make all dishes for you including hand made sushi in front of your eye, and the cocktail is various choices and good to have it with one of the sake.

I asked for the contact of the GM and owner and this is what they gave me.

This place is an absolute joke. I had previously gone to the old Atwater location and had an incredible omakase experience that was truly unique and special. Between my date and I this was our 5th visit in total. We were both excited to enjoy another great experience, but we were in for a very rude awakening. On my our recent visit, we ordered off the non-omakase menu. Out of the 10 or so dishes we ordered only two were good. The San Diego Uni was exceptional, truly some of best I have had. And the local scallops were also incredible. Additionally, their handmade tofu was very impressive. And the toro carpaccio with pine nuts and caviar was solid as well. I believe that it always is reasonable to give credit where credit is due. The entire experience was absolutely mediocre outside of that. Several of the dishes we could not even finish because they were so mediocre and unappealing. I ordered a green tea at the beginning of the meal and it arrived 45 minutes later after I reminded them. But here is where the experience really fell apart: Towards the end of our meal, the maître d' came to our table and interrupted a very serious heart to heart conversation we were enjoying. He specifically asked me if I would like another cocktail. I was not particularly keen on having another drink but I said "sure" the drinks are good I'll have another. I was having their lychee vodka cocktail which was great, but it was a bit sweet and it was about half the size of a normal cocktail at any other restaurant. After 10-15 minutes I noticed that my drink had not arrived. I pointed this out to the maître d' and he said he would go back to the bar to so see what the issue was... He returned to our table and said "sir, you have been cut off." The very same person who interrupted our heart to heart conversation was now telling me that i am "cut off"? He could have simply admitted that he forgot the drink order and that the bar was closed. But instead he chose to insult me in front of my date? I have never been cut off from beverages at any bar or restaurant in my life, let alone a fine dining sushi restaurant that serves half size cocktails. I have never in my life experienced such an absolute joke with regard to restaurant service in my life. The very same person who offered me another beverage, forgot to put the drink order in and tried to disrespect me in front of my date. I cannot reiterate enough how absolutely insane this is. Aside from the food being absolutely mediocre, the service was an absolute abomination. I will NEVER go back to this disgrace of a restaurant ever again. And unfortunately that is only because of the maître d' specifically. All it takes is one idiot to ruin an otherwise acceptable dining experience. If you want good sushi there are literally dozens and dozens of better options available. Brothers sushi Sushi Park Sushi Zo Sushi Gen Sushi Tama Nobu Sushi Note Sasabune Jinpachi Bar Nozawa Shinji Go's Mart There are literally endless options that serve far better sushi and have incredible high quality service. Morihiro will go out of business within the next year or so, and I will laugh about it. Overpriced food, horrible service, and straight up disrespectful staff led by the maître d'. I asked for the contact information of the general manager and owner and they wrote down their names on a piece of paper and did not even include a contact number. I will be following up with them, and I expect they will do nothing to make this horrible experience right. I have had plenty of overpriced meals in my life, and I enjoy exploring all of the great fine dining LA has to offer, but this is truly the worst dining experience I have ever had in my life. And it was completely avoidable. Clowns. 1/5 stars.

Recently, it came back to mind, so I looked it up and found out that the Little Tokyo location had permanently closed. After doing a little more research, I discovered that they had relocated to DTLA. I had been craving a Hamburg steak lately, which was one of the main reasons I decided to visit. My mom ordered the Sukiyaki, and I ordered the Hamburg steak. We shared both dishes, and unfortunately, the Sukiyaki was unbelievably salty. It tasted as if someone had poured an entire bottle of soy sauce into it. Even when eaten together with the rice that came with it, it was still overwhelmingly salty. The beef was also very tough, which made the dish even more disappointing. As for the Hamburg steak, the portion size was extremely small. On the positive side, it came with a generous serving of rice, a salad, and miso soup. The Hamburg steak itself tasted good, but it was severely overcooked and heavily charred, which was a huge disappointment. Until recently, I wasn't particularly focused on my health, but both of my parents have been dealing with health issues, and seeing that has made me much more health-conscious. I've been trying to avoid burnt foods and charred meats whenever possible. I've also cut out ham, sausages, sugary juices, and sodas. Because of that, I was especially disappointed to see my Hamburg steak burned so badly that parts of it were almost black. The restroom required walking down a very long flight of stairs. While it was spacious and clean, it had a somewhat eerie atmosphere, probably because it was located in the basement. There were only stairs and no obvious alternative access, which made me wonder how customers with disabilities would be able to reach the restroom. The service was very friendly and welcoming. However, between the disappointing food, the inconvenient parking situation (street parking only--fortunately, thanks to my usual incredible parking luck, I managed to find the one available parking space), and the difficulty of accessing the restroom, I don't think I'll be returning. Overall, I was especially disappointed by the food, and for that reason, I probably won't be visiting again. But, I gave the tip 20%. Cuz, the service was friendly.

I saw that they added some type of sauce and once it was placed in front of me, I politely asked if this roll contained any soy sauce, which I am allergic to since I have celiac disease. It was confirmed that this role had soy sauce, so I refused the roll, and at first the manager/supervisor was able to rearrange my order to regular 6 hand rolls. The ankimo that wasn't touched by me I asked her if I should give to my peers instead of throwing the handroll in the trash. She said yes. After my 5th roll they asked if we want to order anything else. I said I am still missing one roll. And she said you had 5 and the ankimo. I said I didn't eat the ankimo. And she said your friends did .... So she charged me the extra one that was going to the trash because I didn't want to waste food ... Throughout our conversation, it was not confirmed that the handroll I gave to my friend was supposed to be a part of the six hand rolls upgrade that the manager had offered me. It would've been best if she gave me some clarification so that I was not kept waiting for an extra handroll that I was able to eat due to my medical condition. I thought they would have been understanding, but unfortunately, I was wrong
