    Honey Walnut Shrimp Sando
    Candace C.

Katsu Sando is legit! The hot items on the menu are freshly made to order. I've had the Original pork and the Honey Walnut Shrimp sandos, the waffle fries and curry sauce. The flavors are excellent and the sandos are nice and thick - the pork and shrimp as well as the honey milk bread. The shop is small and right in the middle of a busy block in Chinatown. You order at the counter. There is no seating but there is counter space by the window if you would like to stand and eat. I ate there the first time and took it to go the second time I went. It held up just fine after 20 minutes. They have a small grab and go shelf with beverages and egg salad sandos. I think sometimes they have fruit sandos as well. It's not the easiest place to get to. I found metered parking about a block away. It's a bit random, but I have found it to be worth the stop when I'm in the downtown area.

Wow, this chicken katsu was the most flavorful, tender, and juicy cutlet. I got the kimchi brown butter chicken and the mac salad with the pickles and chicken was such a delicious combo. And they serve my favorite soda pop, Squirt. We will be back. Also, the owner was so friendly and accommodating. It made it an 11/10 experience.

Tried the original chicken katsu sando and the chicken itself was massive. It was good, but the red sauce on the side didn't really go with it in my opinion. My coworker let me try a bite of her brown butter kimchi chicken sandwich and honestly... way better than mine. Better flavor and a much more manageable size. I also ordered the curry fries, but what I got was basically waffle fries with a drizzle of mayo. Based on other photos here, I'm pretty sure they forgot to give me the curry on the side. The shop itself is cute and trendy, but there's barely any seating so we took ours to go. It's right in Chinatown, so parking is its usual challenge. The cashier also seemed like he'd rather be anywhere else. When I asked for a recommendation between the original sandwich and the honey walnut shrimp, he told me they were the same except one had shrimp... which, fair, but not exactly helpful. EDIT: my coworker and I both got sick later the night after eating here

Location is a bit hard to find, even with maps it kept sending us someplace else. It's a shop with a few tables and stools to sit at. It's best to grab and go. Portions are pretty large allowing you to save the other half for later. The chicken was perfectly cooked and crunchy. While good, I do wish it had a bit more depth in flavor.

Deep fried foods aren't my go to but the katsu in this sandwich was terrific. Not oily, moist, crunchy with the perfect accompaniments. Small store built for to-go.

Came here on a Friday for a fast and easy lunch in Chinatown. It's a small, casual, quick service spot that serves mainly katsu sandwiches and sides. There isn't anywhere to sit, but they do have a countertop along the inside of the front window where you can eat standing up if you decide to dine in. I ordered the curry cheese fries because they reminded me of chili cheese fries. The hot, crispy waffles fries were drizzled with kewpie mayo and sprinkled with seaweed. The curry came served in a cup on the side, so I tried some of the fries without it first. They're so good on their own! Then I had a few fries dipped into the curry, also great. And then I ended up going for the chili cheese fries experience and just dumped the rest of the curry onto all my remaining fries. It was delicious! And so filling. I didn't order a sandwich because I knew eating both would probably be too much for me. My friends had ordered both the pork katsu and chicken katsu sandwiches, and they said they really liked them. I'll definitely try a sandwich next time I visit.

I'm so happy I stumbled onto this place. I decided to go to Chinatown one afternoon, looking fresh Chinese pasties but to my disappointment, there were no bakeries selling fresh pastries in the afternoon. So I continued walking and came across Katsu Sando, which didn't have a big grand store front, and easy to miss, but I'm glad I saw it. We got the pork katsu sandwich and to our surprise, it was fresh, hot (actually steamy) and crispy. The crunchy veggies, like slaw, that were inside went well with it. It also had a nice tangy vinegar sauce that wasn't too overpowering. We also got the fries with curry sauce and cheese. It was probably an overkill since the sandwich was so filling, but it looked interesting. It did not disappoint, but it put me over the top, food coma style. Service was friendly. The sandwich took about 10 min to make, which was fine, considering how fresh it tasted. You want something fresh out of the stove! I also got the canned orange juice with pulp. It reminded me of my childhood.

The meat in these sandwiches are HUGE like Popeyes chicken sand which typa thick I've definitely had better bread at other rando places, feels like your typical white sandwich bread instead of milk bread or brioche but it's definitely a deal breaker. The winner for me is how incredibly CRUNCHY and CRISPY the katsu is. All the sandwhiches are made fresh so it definitely takes 10+ minutes per order!

Yabai Loco Moco: wagyu beef patty, sunny side egg, white rice, on the side: demi-glace, kimchi, and mac salad (underneath the kimchi).
    Nelson K.

My friend and I almost missed the location while walking down the street since the restaurant blends in with the other businesses nearby. On to the food: I had the Yabai Loco Moco (I know, not a sandwich or even katsu), which came with rice, the option of 4 sausages or 1 "Australian wagyu" patty (this wasn't written on the menu but appeared on the register), a sunny side egg, demi-glace, kimchi, and mac salad. As a whole, the flavors of everything were great and worked together! The patty and runny egg yolk paired nicely with the demi-glace, the kimchi provided a nice bit of tartness to cut through the richness of the proteins, and the mac salad had a nice creaminess (albeit runny) that had that classic Hawaiian mac salad taste. Cost was $15.95. Service: The person working at the register was nice and knowledgeable of the contents of the food (though I had to tell them how to pronounce the "ebi" in ebi fry). Ambiance: It's a small shop with some lively music. There are 3 tables with 2 stools each (seating is very limited) by the windows, but when my friend and I were there on a Saturday afternoon we were basically the only ones there (people were coming to pick up their orders and leaving). When entering, there is a refrigerated section on the right with grab-and-go Japanese convenient store-esque items: onigiri, egg sandos, various drinks, and other items to grab and go. Overall thoughts/experience: I will admit that when I picked up the food, I was a little disappointed at the amount of food I was getting. As the cashier was explaining what was in the Yabai Loco Moco, I thought of other Hawaiian restaurants I've been to and the amount they usually serve--the kimchi is understandably small in portion (around a tablespoon), but the mac salad was essentially also a tablespoon in amount. If you're a big eater, you definitely need to supplement with other items. If you're a small eater, I think this is a good amount. On a side note, I was surprised that they did not provide water. My friend needed water, but when he asked the cashier for water, he was told he'd need to purchase bottled water from the grab-and-go fridge. Not neccesarily a deal breaker for me, but definitely an anomaly to be mindful of since 99% of restaurants I've been to provide water.

    Chicken Katsu Sando
    Melisa A.

Ordered takeout for lunch. These sandwiches are pretty big and surprisingly filling. I tried both the chicken and pork and definitely prefer the chicken. The pork was thick, kind of bland and a little tough to eat. The chicken was much more flavorful and juicy. Overall, highly recommend!

    Cute food box!

This Katsu sando place was so so good! I had one of the best katsu sandos I've ever had here. Starting with the milk bread, it was good quality and was pan fried with butter which made it super yummy. The chicken cutlet was nice and crispy with juicy chicken. I also like how the meat was not too thick or thin. I also liked the layer of sweet marmalade which wasn't too overpowering. The cabbage was also nice, crisp and not an overwhelming amount of it. The fries were also nice and crispy. The curry sauce and potato salad were just okay. It was also so cheap, the katsu sandwich was only $12.95. I would definitely come back to try the other menu items. While they don't have seating at this restaurant, this is great place to pickup food for a picnic. The service here was also pretty good.

Such cute packaging! I ordered DoorDash and it was still warm. I can only imagine how great this must taste fresh. I got the honey walnut sando and they gave a decent amount of thick shrimp cooked well and the crispies were yummy. The bread is fluffy and this was just mmm-mmm unique! I got the tuna ongiri and that was yummy too! The seaweed was still crispy bc of how it was wrapped. The dessert was okay - strawberries and cream with white bread. $31 for everything delivered. I would order again.

    Christopher K.

Love at first bite! Had the cutlet with curry and it was currific! The portion size was huge and the curry flavor was so savory and deep...its so deep, it'll put you to sleep! Loved the breaded texture and the juicyness of the cutlet. It is a heavy meal but if you come with equipped with sweatpants and a sofa, you'll be juuuuust fine. Loved the huge portions and the food coma leading to an amazing nite of sleep I was able to achieve later that evening. Hope to be back to try the other items on the menu like the katsu sandwiches since they also look incredibly phenomenal in the pictures.

Ask the Community - Katsu Sando

Is there any seating or take away only?

There is a stand-up counter facing out the large windows for great people-watching on Broadway!! So not technically “seating”, you CAN indeed eat your meal at the restaurant.

    Are there any vegan options?

No. All products have meat, dairy or eggs.

Is the chicken Katsu sandwich made with chicken breast or chicken thigh?

Our chicken sandos are lovingly made with chicken breasts!

    Is there seating inside?

Sadly, no (I'm pretty sure it has to do with Covid regulations).

Do the sandwiches come with OMG sauce?

    Omg yes! :)

When did they open at this location? Are they very busy too?

they arent super busy. they open last month

Where is the pop-up located now (December 2019)?

Nowhere. They're about to open a brick and mortar place in Chinatown soon :)

Do they only open in Smorgasburg now or do they still have their pop up in Kura?

I want to know if they are available too it's my birthday today, I am in LA and want to try this!!

The bottom of the plate was all rice /teriyaki sauce, which was good- the problem was the main part of the meal, the chicken. It was very dense, almost like it was either overcooked or had been around for a while. It was hard to bite into it. It also came with a little soup that with a tasty curry flavor. The little cup with three pieces of cookie was a nice touch as well.
