What a (not so hidden gem) that has quickly become one of my regular lunch spots! I've gotten the katsu sando, fruit sando, egg salad sando, and menchi katsu plate thus far and nothing has disappointed. The katsu is thick and juicy, tender yet crispy. A paired with some super super soft bread? That's a combo that will win me over any time. Don't forget to add their sauces! Fruit sando is a MUST if you're missing Japan. Sour strawberries paired with sweet cream, what's not to love? Egg salad sando- this one was delicious but maybe I could skip on it, I wish the egg salad was just a bit creamier. Katsu Sando is legit! The hot items on the menu are freshly made to order. I've had the Original pork and the Honey Walnut Shrimp sandos, the waffle fries and curry sauce. The flavors are excellent and the sandos are nice and thick - the pork and shrimp as well as the honey milk bread. The shop is small and right in the middle of a busy block in Chinatown. You order at the counter. There is no seating but there is counter space by the window if you would like to stand and eat. I ate there the first time and took it to go the second time I went. It held up just fine after 20 minutes. They have a small grab and go shelf with beverages and egg salad sandos. I think sometimes they have fruit sandos as well. It's not the easiest place to get to. I found metered parking about a block away. It's a bit random, but I have found it to be worth the stop when I'm in the downtown area. read more

I also ordered the curry fries, but what I got was basically waffle fries with a drizzle of mayo. Based on other photos here, I'm pretty sure they forgot to give me the curry on the side. The shop itself is cute and trendy, but there's barely any seating so we took ours to go. It's right in Chinatown, so parking is its usual challenge. Came here on a Friday for a fast and easy lunch in Chinatown. It's a small, casual, quick service spot that serves mainly katsu sandwiches and sides. There isn't anywhere to sit, but they do have a countertop along the inside of the front window where you can eat standing up if you decide to dine in. I ordered the curry cheese fries because they reminded me of chili cheese fries. The hot, crispy waffles fries were drizzled with kewpie mayo and sprinkled with seaweed. The curry came served in a cup on the side, so I tried some of the fries without it first. They're so good on their own! Then I had a few fries dipped into the curry, also great. And then I ended up going for the chili cheese fries experience and just dumped the rest of the curry onto all my remaining fries. It was delicious! And so filling. I'm so happy I stumbled onto this place. I decided to go to Chinatown one afternoon, looking fresh Chinese pasties but to my disappointment, there were no bakeries selling fresh pastries in the afternoon. My friend and I almost missed the location while walking down the street since the restaurant blends in with the other businesses nearby. On to the food: I had the Yabai Loco Moco (I know, not a sandwich or even katsu), which came with rice, the option of 4 sausages or 1 "Australian wagyu" patty (this wasn't written on the menu but appeared on the register), a sunny side egg, demi-glace, kimchi, and mac salad. As a whole, the flavors of everything were great and worked together! The patty and runny egg yolk paired nicely with the demi-glace, the kimchi provided a nice bit of tartness to cut through the richness of the proteins, and the mac salad had a nice creaminess (albeit runny) that had that classic Hawaiian mac salad taste. Cost was $15.95. Service: The person working at the register was nice and knowledgeable of the contents of the food (though I had to tell them how to pronounce the "ebi" in ebi fry). Ambiance: It's a small shop with some lively music. There are 3 tables with 2 stools each (seating is very limited) by the windows, but when my friend and I were there on a Saturday afternoon we were basically the only ones there (people were coming to pick up their orders and leaving). When entering, there is a refrigerated section on the right with grab-and-go Japanese convenient store-esque items: onigiri, egg sandos, various drinks, and other items to grab and go. Overall thoughts/experience: I will admit that when I picked up the food, I was a little disappointed at the amount of food I was getting. As the cashier was explaining what was in the Yabai Loco Moco, I thought of other Hawaiian restaurants I've been to and the amount they usually serve--the kimchi is understandably small in portion (around a tablespoon), but the mac salad was essentially also a tablespoon in amount. If you're a big eater, you definitely need to supplement with other items. If you're a small eater, I think this is a good amount. On a side note, I was surprised that they did not provide water. My friend needed water, but when he asked the cashier for water, he was told he'd need to purchase bottled water from the grab-and-go fridge. Love at first bite! Had the cutlet with curry and it was currific! The portion size was huge and the curry flavor was so savory and deep...its so deep, it'll put you to sleep! Loved the breaded texture and the juicyness of the cutlet. It is a heavy meal but if you come with equipped with sweatpants and a sofa, you'll be juuuuust fine. To start, the staff was lovely and attentive, making sure to let me know that the combo only comes with a drink when it's the pickle option... which feels super arbitrary but okay. My issue is mostly with whoever does the pricing. It's $5 to make the sando a combo with small fries but the fries are $4 on their own? So what am I paying for with that extra dollar? This location is very small with only a standing area to eat at. We came here on Easter and they were open. We ordered quickly with the cashier. As we were waiting we asked if we could have stickers and she gladly gave us some ! We took the food to go and I had the Menchi katsu Sando. The patty was so flavorful and perfectly cooked. This place is definitely a casual grab-and-go. But stick around for a bit because their background music's solid. I ordered an Egg Salad Sando and a Chicken Katsu Sando to snack with my family. We enjoyed both of them, but preferred the Chicken Katsu Sando more because it was made fresh, and was so warm and flavorful with the sauce on the side. Also, the bread was nicely toasted and the chicken was perfectly crispy. One of these could easily be a single meal! The fried stuff still came out crispy but the bread used in the sandwiches were a little soggy. Honey Walnut Shrimp Sando: The patty is a mash-up of a bunch of shrimps, squished together to form the shape of a patty. The patty is then breaded and deep-fried. The taste wasn't really a typical honey walnut shrimp taste with the mayo and honey. It still has a sweet profile though and the patty was pretty juicy. Egg Salad Sando: Pretty average, nothing really special. The egg salad is light and the mayo isn't too overwhelming. It's pre-wrapped, like it just came from a convenience store, and can easily be shared as a snack. Wagyu Curry Cheese Fries: I wonder if you dine in, do they serve the waffle fries with the curry cheese poured over. But because we ordered delivery, it was in a separate cup to prevent the waffle fries from getting soggy. I think the fries by itself was good enough and I didn't need to pay almost double for an additional side of curry. You really can't tell if it's wagyu or not so don't let that fool you into thinking it's a must-try. Sandos in Japan are so cheap and easily accessible because of all the 7-Elevens and Family Marts but Katsu Sando is a good alternative here in the States. Hands down the best katsu sando place in LA! I've been coming here since they opened during the pandemic, and the quality of the food has remained consistent since Day 1. They release special menu items throughout the year, and it's fun to switch up the menu with those new sandos or kakigori (shaved ice). It's hard to pick just one favorite katsu because each has their own special flavor. Pork katsu and chicken katsu are the classics, and they serve THIC meat pieces. Menchi katsu is juicy and reminds me of hamburg steaks that I used to get in Asia. Mushroom katsu is the underdog but honestly, I sometimes drive over there just to get this. It's one big portabello mushroom as a katsu, and it is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and full of flavor. Pair that with a curry dip, and it's *chef's kiss*. Honey Walnut Shrimp is my all-time favorite. Katsu Sando is the first one who created this katsu sandwich, and it's ingenious. I tried other places that took Katsu Sando's Honey Walnut Shrimp katsu and tried their hands on it, but it's not the same. You can taste the shrimp and bite into the meat chunks, the caramelized walnut pieces provide that extra texture, and the honey condensed milk sauce is perfectly sweet. It's good to order the classic pork and chicken, but sometimes, you just gotta have the honey walnut shrimp. They make their curry in-house, and sometimes I order extra sides (plural) of curry so I can keep it in the fridge and eat it over rice. The cheese curry dipping sauce is great with fries, but it's also great just to dip in your sandos. Their curry just goes with everything, really. I wish they sold batches in their grab-n-go section so I can just keep it forever. Speaking of their grab-n-go section, you cannot leave Katsu Sando without their egg salad sando and fruit sando. The egg salad is so creamy, flavorful and perfect for a snack. It's probably meant to be a light lunch, but I don't care, I'll have the whole thing as a snack. The food is phenomenal (except for the mushroom sandwich, avoid that at all costs). The chicken sandwiches are comparable to Chick-fil-A (or even better, I'd say). We got takeout and the packaging, bags and boxes are super nice. One of the best I've seen in the business.
