Needed something easy to eat for the road trip back to the Bay Area, so I thought a Japanese sando would be perfect--especially craving a tamago sando with whole soft-boiled eggs. Located in a bit of a hole-in-the-wall spot in LA Chinatown, and it was surprisingly hard to find due to the lack of signage. I actually walked past it twice and had to ask a street vendor before realizing I was basically right in front of it. Turns out they no longer offer the tamago sando (used to be a breakfast special), so I went with the egg salad sandwich instead and luckily got it on BOGO since they were clearing extra inventory. I also ordered the chicken katsu, which took about 10 minutes to prepare--but it was worth the wait. Super tender and moist, with a great ratio of cabbage, sauce, and bread. It was a bit large, so I had to flatten it slightly to make it easier to bite into. I do wish I had asked for extra katsu sauce on the side since I prefer mine a bit sweeter and more saucy. I've gotten the katsu sando, fruit sando, egg salad sando, and menchi katsu plate thus far and nothing has disappointed. The katsu is thick and juicy, tender yet crispy. I ordered the katsu plate with garlic fries. The potato salad and macaroni salad were both delicious, and the fries were amazing. My only small complaint is that I wish the garlic sauce had been spread more evenly throughout the fries instead of mostly on top. Came here on a Friday for a fast and easy lunch in Chinatown. It's a small, casual, quick service spot that serves mainly katsu sandwiches and sides. There isn't anywhere to sit, but they do have a countertop along the inside of the front window where you can eat standing up if you decide to dine in. I ordered the curry cheese fries because they reminded me of chili cheese fries. The hot, crispy waffles fries were drizzled with kewpie mayo and sprinkled with seaweed. The curry came served in a cup on the side, so I tried some of the fries without it first. They're so good on their own! Then I had a few fries dipped into the curry, also great. And then I ended up going for the chili cheese fries experience and just dumped the rest of the curry onto all my remaining fries. It was delicious! And so filling. My friend and I almost missed the location while walking down the street since the restaurant blends in with the other businesses nearby. On to the food: I had the Yabai Loco Moco (I know, not a sandwich or even katsu), which came with rice, the option of 4 sausages or 1 "Australian wagyu" patty (this wasn't written on the menu but appeared on the register), a sunny side egg, demi-glace, kimchi, and mac salad. As a whole, the flavors of everything were great and worked together! The patty and runny egg yolk paired nicely with the demi-glace, the kimchi provided a nice bit of tartness to cut through the richness of the proteins, and the mac salad had a nice creaminess (albeit runny) that had that classic Hawaiian mac salad taste. Cost was $15.95. Service: The person working at the register was nice and knowledgeable of the contents of the food (though I had to tell them how to pronounce the "ebi" in ebi fry). Ambiance: It's a small shop with some lively music. There are 3 tables with 2 stools each (seating is very limited) by the windows, but when my friend and I were there on a Saturday afternoon we were basically the only ones there (people were coming to pick up their orders and leaving). When entering, there is a refrigerated section on the right with grab-and-go Japanese convenient store-esque items: onigiri, egg sandos, various drinks, and other items to grab and go. Overall thoughts/experience: I will admit that when I picked up the food, I was a little disappointed at the amount of food I was getting. As the cashier was explaining what was in the Yabai Loco Moco, I thought of other Hawaiian restaurants I've been to and the amount they usually serve--the kimchi is understandably small in portion (around a tablespoon), but the mac salad was essentially also a tablespoon in amount. If you're a big eater, you definitely need to supplement with other items. If you're a small eater, I think this is a good amount. On a side note, I was surprised that they did not provide water. My friend needed water, but when he asked the cashier for water, he was told he'd need to purchase bottled water from the grab-and-go fridge. This Katsu sando place was so so good! I had one of the best katsu sandos I've ever had here. Starting with the milk bread, it was good quality and was pan fried with butter which made it super yummy. The chicken cutlet was nice and crispy with juicy chicken. I also like how the meat was not too thick or thin. I also liked the layer of sweet marmalade which wasn't too overpowering. The cabbage was also nice, crisp and not an overwhelming amount of it. The fries were also nice and crispy. The curry sauce and potato salad were just okay. It was also so cheap, the katsu sandwich was only $12.95. Love at first bite! Had the cutlet with curry and it was currific! The portion size was huge and the curry flavor was so savory and deep...its so deep, it'll put you to sleep! Loved the breaded texture and the juicyness of the cutlet. It is a heavy meal but if you come with equipped with sweatpants and a sofa, you'll be juuuuust fine. Even with quite a long wait of ~45 minutes from order placement to delivery, the food was still warm and seemed "fresh"! I enjoyed the mushroom katsu sando, and that whole portobello mushroom is so meaty and all of the other ingredients make for a filling meal-sized sandwich- the frisee, yuzu-kosho slaw, katsu sauce, and the star of the show: the honey milk bread *insert drool emoji* Their original housemade sauce was super addictive and I spread it on my sandwich and fries, too! This location is very small with only a standing area to eat at. We came here on Easter and they were open. We ordered quickly with the cashier. As we were waiting we asked if we could have stickers and she gladly gave us some ! We took the food to go and I had the Menchi katsu Sando. The patty was so flavorful and perfectly cooked. I've known about Katsu Sando for years, but never visited, so I was very excited to try it last week. On Friday afternoon, I was running errands in the area. I parked at a nearby public lot and walked up to the restaurant. Service was quick and staff were friendly. I got the Egg Salad Sando from the refridgerated section and ordered the Chicken Katsu Sando, which was made-to-order. While I was waiting for my order, I checked out the space; there's no seating - just a long counter by the window, overlooking the street - and no restrooms. This place is definitely a casual grab-and-go. But stick around for a bit because their background music's solid. I ordered an Egg Salad Sando and a Chicken Katsu Sando to snack with my family. We enjoyed both of them, but preferred the Chicken Katsu Sando more because it was made fresh, and was so warm and flavorful with the sauce on the side. Also, the bread was nicely toasted and the chicken was perfectly crispy. One of these could easily be a single meal! The pictures look so good and I bet it would have tasted just as good if we were dining in but we unfortunately could only do a Doordash delivery. Honey Walnut Shrimp Sando: The patty is a mash-up of a bunch of shrimps, squished together to form the shape of a patty. The patty is then breaded and deep-fried. The taste wasn't really a typical honey walnut shrimp taste with the mayo and honey. It still has a sweet profile though and the patty was pretty juicy. Egg Salad Sando: Pretty average, nothing really special. The egg salad is light and the mayo isn't too overwhelming. It's pre-wrapped, like it just came from a convenience store, and can easily be shared as a snack. Wagyu Curry Cheese Fries: I wonder if you dine in, do they serve the waffle fries with the curry cheese poured over. But because we ordered delivery, it was in a separate cup to prevent the waffle fries from getting soggy. I think the fries by itself was good enough and I didn't need to pay almost double for an additional side of curry. You really can't tell if it's wagyu or not so don't let that fool you into thinking it's a must-try. Sandos in Japan are so cheap and easily accessible because of all the 7-Elevens and Family Marts but Katsu Sando is a good alternative here in the States. I love honey walnut shrimp so I was pretty happy.
