Tarako (Codroe) Chazuke
Jadis H.

I love the chazuke and recommend it if you are looking for something warm and soupy, but not too heavy on a cold day. You'll receive a teapot with broth to pour over a bowl of rice with your choice of protein, such as salmon or cod roe, with bits of radish and seaweed. This is also my second time coming back for their dessert. There is a cup of hojicha served with the hojicha pudding, and a cup of green tea with the green tea cream pudding. It's not too sweet, the teas complement its counterpart very well and is overall super delicious :3

Broiled Saba
Ailun H.

I was craving Japanese comfort food for lunch yesterday since it was cold and rainy. Suehiro was a convenient option nearby, and most reviews spoke highly of their rice bowls and Japanese grilled fish set meals. My cousin and I were able to make a reservation very easily through Yelp. We were seated immediately upon arrival and placed our order soon after. Our meals came with miso soup, which was simple and clean-tasting, like most restaurant miso soups tend to be. BROILED SABA - 18.50 This was a set meal that came with a generous portion of broiled saba, rice, and a variety of side dishes. The saba was lightly seasoned with salt, and the skin was nicely crisped from the fish's natural oil. The side dishes were pretty solid, but nothing mind-blowing. I liked how homey this set meal was, rather than overly restaurant-style. My cousin got the sukiyaki, which was rich and slightly sweet with an abundant of toppings. I'd definitely consider getting that next time. Overall, the service was fast and hospitable, and the food was comforting and satisfying. The menu is quite extensive, so there's much more to try, and pricing is pretty reasonable for downtown LA.

BEST service, and the owner is so sweet! We've been coming here for lunch or breakfast and love it. Reliable, yummy comfort food and lots of it for the price. The location is also right across from my favorite vintage store as well!!! Definitely on my restaurant rotation.

Came with a friend on a holiday and was able to find street parking easily. Not sure if that's the norm as I tend to avoid DTLA which is known for bad parking. I've been to the original location many years ago and I was excited to support the business in their new location. Interior was great! Nice and clean and I loved sitting in the cute booth. Food (3/5) I was pleased by the depth of flavor in the sukiyaki, however the beef was very overcooked and the broth was extremely salty. The broth itself was great but could just have used some extra water or less salt. The veggies were also a little overcooked for my liking as well making them extra salty from the broth. Service (4/5) We arrived at 12:30 and although the place was mostly empty, it still took a while for them to bring us water and take our order. We also never were offered water refills. Service was still friendly and people were kind. Overall, I still have a soft spot for Suehiro but will try other menu items next time!

Clockwise- white rice, cold tofu, natto, miso soup, omelette.

I had never been here, but saw Kenji's videos about his weekend breakfasts, and had to check Suehiro out. The space is well lit, bright, and welcoming. Not only is Kenji the nicest person, but the food was AMAZING! I had the omelette, as well as the natto, chawanmushi, tofu, rice, and miso soup. It's SOOO much food I had breakfast the next day too! For $5 more, you can have a great variety of unlimited tea, and he brings out a selection of mochi you can purchase as well. I can't wait to come back, and again to try the lunch/dinner as well. Very highly recommended!

Hamburger Steak with demi-glacé (minus miso and salad)

I love going for late night meals and snacks, especially when I feel like reading and doing some work. The staff is always pleasant and friendly. Suehiro has a good history in Little Tokyo since its opening in 1972, and they are one of the oldest legacy restaurants in the area. Sadly, a few years ago, the landlords were unwilling to honor the five decades in Little Tokyo and had raised rents and driven them out. However, due to the loyalty and love of the community and organizations like Little Tokyo Service Center, they will return to Little Tokyo. Prior to the move from the first street location, I remember it being like a time capsule, an old diner with fluorescent lights, photos on the wall about its past, and handwritten signs. The Downtown location is a few blocks from Little Tokyo in Historic DTLA on the corner of 4th & Main St. Reborn in a modern downtown space, they blend the industrial textures with contemporary warmth. There's a lot on the menu. Japanese comfort food. Curry. Hamburger. Yakatori on Tuesdays. Ramen and udon. Sushi and sashimi. Teriyaki. Rice bowls. Omurice on Mondays is something I have yet to try. If you can afford the extra egg on the dishes, it's probably a good idea.

I have been here twice now and want to keep coming back to try the entire menu! The food is always fresh and is very delicious. I have had their udon and cold soba which were flavorful. Each time I've been, staff has been very welcoming. I recommend this place and will be back to try the rest of the menu. The restaurant is very welcoming and modern. I especially like sitting at the booths and watching out the windows.

WOW! Such a hidden gem! I got the cold dipping noodles and the salmon bowl and it was SOOO refreshing and extremely good. The salmon bowl has a bit of wasabi marinated tho so I would be careful if you can't eat spicy. Servers were great and the place looks like you're in an actual Japanese restaurant. SOOO COOLLL!! Would come back 100%

Agedashi Tofu

Super cute restaurant with awesome ambiance. Food was delicious and service was great. Came by after a concert and the restaurant had a pretty decent crowd. Wasn't empty but wasn't super packed. We ordered the Sukiyaki which was DELECTABLE and an equally good Takoyaki and Agedashi Tofu. Honestly still thinking about the Tofu. The rice flour shell for it was so crispy and the tofu was super silky. Flavor was incredible. Definitely will be coming back here. This was one of the most memorable restaurants and meals for our staycation. Overall rating: Food: 10/10 Service: 10/10 Menu: 10/10 Restaurant Vibes: 10/10 Price to Overall Dining (POD): 10/10

Traditional Japanese breakfast

Suehiro DTLA is one of those places that instantly reminds you why truly authentic restaurants matter. From the moment you walk in, it feels real. The owner greets you with genuine warmth, and the staff makes you feel welcomed in the best Japanese tradition--kind, attentive, and quietly thoughtful without ever being overbearing. The menu is wonderfully diverse, offering a wide range of classic Japanese dishes, all executed with care and respect for tradition. One absolute must is their family-recipe miso soup--it's deeply comforting, rich, and soulful in a way only something passed down through generations can be. It's the kind of dish that stays with you long after the meal is over. We're incredibly lucky that Suehiro was able to reopen in this location after the unfortunate events with their original location in Little Tokyo. Having them back feels important--not just for the neighborhood, but for anyone who values authentic Japanese cuisine and culture. If you can, make sure to come for their Japanese breakfast on the weekends. It's outstanding--beautifully balanced, deeply satisfying, and something you don't find easily in LA. The quality of the ingredients and the precision in preparation really stand out. What makes Suehiro special is the authenticity. If I don't look outside at downtown Los Angeles and instead focus on the décor, the flavors, and the calm, welcoming atmosphere, it genuinely feels like being back in Japan. That's not something many places can pull off. Suehiro DTLA isn't just a restaurant--it's an experience rooted in tradition, care, and craftsmanship. Highly recommended, and I'm so grateful they're here.

Ambiance: it's located on the corner spot on main street, stylish decorations inside, sofa and regular seats and bar tables available, they also have an outdoor patio area Service: very friendly and patient with questions, although it's hard to get attention from servers, and they tend to be very busy during rush hours Food: variety choices on their regular menu, and they have seasonal items and lunch specials HAYASHI RICE - **** their signature cooked beef stew with rice, and the Hayashi sauce contains beef, onion, tomato and mushroom, tender beef and rich in flavors, recommend Miso Soup - *** served with most set menu, average taste Price: moderate portions and reasonable prices, expect $25+ per person for a comfort meal

Lunch special

I love Suehiro and I was finally able to visit them at their new DTLA location. And I'm happy to say it's like it never moved. Even though they are in a different location, it still has that same feel of their other location and the food is the same. The service and the staff are the same. I was happy to see that they still have lunch specials. Now they have a dedicated bar area and a separate room. Coming back for some of my favorites, like their house special and the Hayashi rice!

Curry Katsu Chicken Rice

This is a solid Japanese restaurant in the heart of DTLA, albeit in a somewhat sketchier part of downtown. Great vibes in the restaurant with huge TVs for sports fans. Cool decorations inside and overall a great place to have a dinner with friends or a date spot. They can easily seat huge groups in the middle of the restaurant but also smaller groups on the booths by the windows. Parking may be difficult given its location, so I chose to Uber here. They have a huge menu with every Japanese dish you can think of from sushi/sashimi to ramen and udon to rice dishes. I got the curry katsu chicken and was very impressed with the quality of the katsu! At a lot of restaurants, I find myself somewhat disappointed by the chicken katsu - it's usually too thin so it ends up being just crunchy; however, here at Suehiro, the katsu was very well made and there is a firm crunch with the perfect amount of chicken. The curry was solid - nothing to complain about and had some pieces of carrots, potatoes, and mushrooms. I also opted to add $1.75 to make it medium spice; to be honest, I thought this was weird that it cost extra to add some spice to the dish. The spice is honestly unnecessary; my friend got the same dish without the spice and it still tasted great! Overall, I really enjoyed my food here and coupled it with a cocktail. The service is attentive and the food comes out fast. I noticed that the servers had an eye for detail. There was a little kid running around the restaurant and she had grabbed a pair of chopsticks laying on an empty table. I noticed that and wasn't sure if an employee would come to replace it. Sure enough, one of the workers was attentive enough to notice and quickly replaced the chopsticks with a clean pair. I will definitely be back!

All the workers answered my questions and even as the dinner rush came in, I never felt like I was pressured to hurry up. Huge kudos to them for this. There are lots of places to get ramen in Little Tokyo and I have my go to places, but now that so many other ramen places are popping up in the 626, the daunting task of driving to DTLA and finding parking have also factored into my decision to wander out. But as a J-fashion and anime fan, I'm just constantly thrown back into the Little Tokyo vortex. For this recent visit, I remember my friend hyping up the Anaheim Rakkan Ramen, so I thought why not? Came a bit later into the dinner rush, around 6-something PM and was seated immediately as a solo diner on a Friday night. It started to get a bit busier around the time I was finishing up. Seating is a bit tight inside with a couple of tables, counter bar seating, but they do have outdoors seating as well. Food came out efficiently and super piping hot. For my dinner, I got the: 1) Coffee Jelly: -One of my favorite, comforting Japanese desserts. If a bakery has it, I'll order it, and I felt a bit indulgent so I ordered it then. Staff asked if I wanted to have it at the end or just have it come out ASAP. I said ASAP and it was a good palate cleanser between the savory and sweet so I didn't get tired of the flavor. Not a super huge amount of coffee jelly (but makes sense since this is a restaurant and not a to go ordering counter at a bakery), but it was silky and had a good coffee flavor to it. You get a small "shot" of heavy cream milk to mix in and you can control how sweet you want it. Not bad. 2) Ramen Sushi Combo (Spicy Quartz Ramen + Aburi Salmon): -This comes with any signature ramen and any 2 pieces of sushi (extra fee for any upgrades) -I got their spicy quartz ramen, which is their creamy miso broth ramen made with your choice of chicken or pork chashu (I got pork), crispy fried garlic, seasoned egg, fried broccolini, and 2 pieces of nori. -There's LOTS of crispy fried garlic pieces in it. Every bite has a slight garlic after taste and it's nice to add a bit of crunchy texture to the ramen. -The broccolini is unique, I don't think I've ever had that with a ramen before and it's nice to have some greens too. - It's a seasoned egg, not a soft boiled egg, so don't expect that. It's not hard boiled all the way, but the flavor wasn't super strong for the egg. Not bad, but not the best. -The noodles are thicker egg noodles that had a nice chew and texture to it. However, the broth flavor wasn't that strong to me? If that makes sense. You get a good taste of creamy miso and a very slight kick, but I felt like the 2 small pieces of chashu and noodles didn't really take the flavor of the broth that well. Maybe I should have left my bowl of ramen soaking longer to get a better taste profile? Who knows. 3) Aburi Salmon (2 pieces): -I chose this with my combo and it doesn't incur an extra free. It's a seared salmon with mayo on top. -Not bad. Can never go wrong with aburi salmon. It's comparable to what you can get from Kura. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing or maybe my taste buds have been blasted by ramen spots with heavier, flavor intensive broths like Tenkaippin and Nagi. I don't mind going if someone else invites me and hopefully it's a better experience.

Crazy time lapse, and truly shows what a favorite this place is and it's place in the community. As with all businesses in Little Tokyo, parking can suck (not as bad as K-town, but you're either paying or super circling around). Service is super efficient, welcoming and polite, as with their other locations as well. It's not the biggest restaurant, but none of the Shinsengumis I've been to have been particularly large. With this location, from my first visit, and all the subsequent visits, I always get their Hakata ramen, firmer noodles, since the longer I eat and enjoy the food, they'll soften a bit, less soup oil and less saltiness. I get all of the toppings that it comes with and I always add in a poached egg. Love the strong pork flavor since they stew their broth for so long and the tenderness of the chashu (sometimes I order more). Prices have definitely gone up and a slightly altered upgraded version of this ramen is almost $30 if you're not careful enough. Times have changed but how good this place hasn't. There's more ramen options now than there were like 10 years ago, but Shinsengumi is always a classic.

The tonkotsu is not one of those rich, milky, creamy ones and I personally like these lighter ones more. I also enjoyed the shoyu which had a pleasant depth of flavor, but it felt like it was relying too heavily on MSG for umami. Noodles came out chewy.
