    Chazuke!

There's just something iconic and nostalgic about Suehiro. Yes, it seems a little overpriced now and the location has changed from the original late-night more diner-esque location. The place is nicer than the original and it's an interesting location. Downstairs where the restrooms are located looks like a bank vault (?). Interesting architecture! Anyway, I heard that they will be relocating again soon? Anyway, I do miss the old Suehiro, lots of memories there. But if you happen to be in Little Tokyo and catching a show nearby, it's a decent place to eat. Just be a little careful as Little Tokyo area is right by Skid Row.

Let me start with...DO NOT MISS Saturday's AUTHENTIC Japaneses breakfast! My group of 6 people- all newbies to Suehiro DTLA- enjoyed a special and delightful breakfast served and narrated by the one and only Mr. Kenji, the 2nd generation owner of Suehiro. All of us enjoyed a different breakfast set which included 3 Small sides. The Saba or mackerel set was grilled perfectly. The eggs and sausages were tasty. I ordered the ochazuke w zuke tuna and zuke salmon. All was so fresh. I added the dashi broth that comes in a cute mini tea pot and took the dish to the next level!!! We all ordered the bottomless tea and coffee and enjoyed 4 different flavors of tea. Such an epicurean delight! The ambiance is simple but reflective of a Japanese cafe. I will be back on another weekend so I can taste my way through all the wonderful tastes. Thanks Mr. Kenji for a memorable first visit!

Yesterday evening, June 12th, my mom and I went to Suehiro DTLA Cafe for dinner. I had visited this restaurant a very long time ago when it was located in Little Tokyo. Recently, it came back to mind, so I looked it up and found out that the Little Tokyo location had permanently closed. After doing a little more research, I discovered that they had relocated to DTLA. I had been craving a Hamburg steak lately, which was one of the main reasons I decided to visit. My mom ordered the Sukiyaki, and I ordered the Hamburg steak. We shared both dishes, and unfortunately, the Sukiyaki was unbelievably salty. It tasted as if someone had poured an entire bottle of soy sauce into it. Even when eaten together with the rice that came with it, it was still overwhelmingly salty. The beef was also very tough, which made the dish even more disappointing. As for the Hamburg steak, the portion size was extremely small. On the positive side, it came with a generous serving of rice, a salad, and miso soup. The Hamburg steak itself tasted good, but it was severely overcooked and heavily charred, which was a huge disappointment. Until recently, I wasn't particularly focused on my health, but both of my parents have been dealing with health issues, and seeing that has made me much more health-conscious. I've been trying to avoid burnt foods and charred meats whenever possible. I've also cut out ham, sausages, sugary juices, and sodas. Because of that, I was especially disappointed to see my Hamburg steak burned so badly that parts of it were almost black. The restroom required walking down a very long flight of stairs. While it was spacious and clean, it had a somewhat eerie atmosphere, probably because it was located in the basement. There were only stairs and no obvious alternative access, which made me wonder how customers with disabilities would be able to reach the restroom. The service was very friendly and welcoming. However, between the disappointing food, the inconvenient parking situation (street parking only--fortunately, thanks to my usual incredible parking luck, I managed to find the one available parking space), and the difficulty of accessing the restroom, I don't think I'll be returning. Overall, I was especially disappointed by the food, and for that reason, I probably won't be visiting again. But, I gave the tip 20%. Cuz, the service was friendly.

Delicious food and trendy interior! You can't go wrong here The waiter was super kind. I believe they are known for their hayashi. My friend got it and loved it. I had their menchi and was super good. Their bathroom is down stairs and the interior leading to it is so beautiful! I can see people throwing parties here. Kind of a speakeasy vibe.

Friends invited me to Suehiro for a Japanese breakfast! Wow! It was worth all the hype! They are located in a vintage building in DTLA. Such a cute space! For breakfast, there are 7 teishoku / set meals to choose from. You pick your meal and choose 3 side dishes. You can also get side orders if you want more! I ordered the broiled Saba. Sides were the chawanmushi egg custard, marinated salmon, marinated tuna, and salmon eggs Ikura. Everything was authentic and delicious! Yiu can choose the AYCD (all you can drink) green tea for $5. Self serve tea of four tea choices. Service was great! Tons of street parking on the weekend. Everyone enjoyed their meals!

Love love this spot!! Finally got a chance to visit after their breakfast and got dinner here Saturday night. My partner got the ramen and I got the chicken menchi katsu set. The chicken menchi katsu was soooo filling and delicious! I couldn't even finish 1 and gave the rest to my partner. Everything in the set was delicious and presented well. Ramen was pretty standard and felt super clean compared to some of the tonkatsu ramen I've had before. Service is great they are so friendly and on top of it. Truly love this gem and it's so important for small businesses in the community to thrive. I will continue to support this joint when I'm in DTLA. Also so thrilled they're opening a 3rd location in Little Tokyo!!

I want to say this is the hamburger steak

The food was incredible, the atmosphere was extremely relaxing, and our waiter was very attentive and kind! In my 3 day weekend there, I went back twice because I enjoyed it so much. My friends and I were bummed that we missed the omurice (served only on Mondays @ Dinner) but everything was still delicious! We came on our friend's recommendation and I plan to at least once every time I'm in DTLA.

I was craving Japanese comfort food for lunch yesterday since it was cold and rainy. Suehiro was a convenient option nearby, and most reviews spoke highly of their rice bowls and Japanese grilled fish set meals. My cousin and I were able to make a reservation very easily through Yelp. We were seated immediately upon arrival and placed our order soon after. Our meals came with miso soup, which was simple and clean-tasting, like most restaurant miso soups tend to be. BROILED SABA - 18.50 This was a set meal that came with a generous portion of broiled saba, rice, and a variety of side dishes. The saba was lightly seasoned with salt, and the skin was nicely crisped from the fish's natural oil. The side dishes were pretty solid, but nothing mind-blowing. I liked how homey this set meal was, rather than overly restaurant-style. My cousin got the sukiyaki, which was rich and slightly sweet with an abundant of toppings. I'd definitely consider getting that next time. Overall, the service was fast and hospitable, and the food was comforting and satisfying. The menu is quite extensive, so there's much more to try, and pricing is pretty reasonable for downtown LA.

Customer service is really good and I got my food pretty fast. I got the chicken katsu curry...It was delicious. The looks of the restaurant looked pretty cool. I wish the portions were bigger though.

    Tarako (Codroe) Chazuke
    Jadis H.

I love the chazuke and recommend it if you are looking for something warm and soupy, but not too heavy on a cold day. You'll receive a teapot with broth to pour over a bowl of rice with your choice of protein, such as salmon or cod roe, with bits of radish and seaweed. This is also my second time coming back for their dessert. There is a cup of hojicha served with the hojicha pudding, and a cup of green tea with the green tea cream pudding. It's not too sweet, the teas complement its counterpart very well and is overall super delicious :3

Came with a friend on a holiday and was able to find street parking easily. Not sure if that's the norm as I tend to avoid DTLA which is known for bad parking. I've been to the original location many years ago and I was excited to support the business in their new location. Interior was great! Nice and clean and I loved sitting in the cute booth. Food (3/5) I was pleased by the depth of flavor in the sukiyaki, however the beef was very overcooked and the broth was extremely salty. The broth itself was great but could just have used some extra water or less salt. The veggies were also a little overcooked for my liking as well making them extra salty from the broth. Service (4/5) We arrived at 12:30 and although the place was mostly empty, it still took a while for them to bring us water and take our order. We also never were offered water refills. Service was still friendly and people were kind. Overall, I still have a soft spot for Suehiro but will try other menu items next time!

Preserved menu board and booth from Suehiro's original Little Tokyo location.

Bummed that Suehiro is over in the Old Bank District now...damn gentrifiers kicking longtime tenants out of Little Tokyo...but am glad to hear they've recently signed a lease with the Little Tokyo Service Center to return to their historic roots. That being said, like Kouraku over on 2nd Street, Suehiro was founded in the 1970s and has long been a neighborhood favorite for its post-war, pre-bubble, Showa-era aesthetic and fare. You're not coming here for California Rolls or ramen (which they offer, but that's not what they specialize in), but the dishes Japanese people consider comfort food...curry, oyakodon, tonkatsu, and reasonably priced box lunches. It's the type of working-class food one would associate with any solid small town diner, except in Japan...and if that's what you're looking for, I generally prefer Suehiro to its longtime competitor, Kouraku. Kenji, the son of the original owner and current proprietor is a staunch supporter of the community, having grown up on the streets of Little Tokyo, and along with Brian over at Fugetsu-Do, Ryusei at Mr. Ramen, and Philip at Azay are all second and third generation business owners that have been manning the barricades against gentrification and need our support! As you can tell from the businesses I tend to praise here on Yelp...I've long been a proponent of supporting locally owned businesses whose owners are active in the local community and reinvest in little league teams and donate to local schools, it's more important than ever to shop and eat local, and to stop offshoring our hard earned dollars to out-of-state corporations who take our money and pay for space tourism or supporting policies god knows what and where.

BEST service, and the owner is so sweet! We've been coming here for lunch or breakfast and love it. Reliable, yummy comfort food and lots of it for the price. The location is also right across from my favorite vintage store as well!!! Definitely on my restaurant rotation.

Update- was really looking forward to dinner at Chubby Curry. My friends and I have patronized this…read moreplace since it opened. It was our go-to place for almost two years. We hadn't been in about 6 months and decided to drop in for dinner before a movie- Wow, has it changed- and not in a good way. There were fewer staff and they were spread thin, with not even half the tables full. The place was a little unkept. The menu is all digital- so we had some questions ordering our favorites. We got the Wagu steak with rice and curry and the breaded chicken breast. When the Wagu arrived it was unrecognizable- brown and looked over cooked - no pink. The entire dish was completely unappetizing. It was sad looking. I tried to show the server that this looked nothing like the menu photos in the front wall. He was already flustered and told me "to calm down ma'am" and that is "how it comes- we put soy sauce on it." The calm down nonsense was a real put off. My next question was, why is a restaurant putting soy sauce on perfect Wagu? None of the menu photos show soy sauce. We have never had soy sauce drenched Wagu here ever. The amount of soy sauce - if any-- is up to the guest. We all have our sodium preferences, right? I personally liked their Wagu plate as is. I tried to get the server to follow me to the front wall to show him the photo of all their Wagu dishes on their front wall and he was really not happy. Those photos were how their food always looked- fresh- colorful and delicious looking. The comparison was stunningly different- he would not hear it - and was visible upset with me. Sending this back caused quite a problem- more like an argument with the server who insisted this is how Wagu comes. It does not and I posted a review previously with photos from several visits to this once fun to eat at place. They offered to remake it and I caught the server and chef's convo. Chef was bewildered with the whole no soy sauce thing. The server came back with a small piece of Wagu in a service cup to show me what their Wagu looked like before the soy sauce bath. It was not the bright fresh pink. It was gray, like it had been prepped a couple days ago and refrigerated. Completely unacceptable and not appetizing. I told them to please not remake it. It would be a waste and please Just remove it and we'd order something else. The server was so upset with me he told me he would remove everything and not charge us at all. I felt that was unfair to the restaurant and his attitude was like don't order anything, and do not come back. My guy friend insisted that we pay and the server came back with a bill for just the chicken. I gave him cash for everything we ordered including the Wagu, and he brought me almost all the money back. I was particularly insulted by this. This was such negative energy- I did not want to touch it. I left all the money on the table and left. Message to the owner- replacing servers with digital menus does not lessen their work. it increases their time explaining what dishes are and how dishes come. You need more people because servers have more work in less time. I really felt for this server and did not feel any of this was his fault. The quality drop in food, the excess work due to digital menus, and food not matching the promises made in photos at the front wall from opening day are not your server's fault. We were expecting the same consistency and were sadly disappointed. We will not be returning.
