Katsu bento set

Trying out different spots in little Tokyo village! Their portion is crazy big!! Half way eating I look up at my mom and ask "did you even eat any?" Her bento looks the same as when it was served lol!!!! Super big portion! They are all delicious!!

Tonkatsu lunch bento

We were supposed to go to Oomasa but apparently they are closed on Tuesdays so we ended up trying this gem in Little Tokyo. We got here as soon as they opened and got seated right away. They have Bento boxes which is what we wanted for lunch. I ordered from the lunch special which was a little cheaper and smaller serving than their regular Bento. I got Tonkatsu which came with small salad, a few pieces of fried chicken and 1 egg roll. The chicken was surprisingly good. The tonkatsu was a lot that I ate it for 3 other meals. My co workers got the chicken katsu Bento and another co worker got the chicken teriyaki Bento. All our Bento came with miso soup which was perfect for the weather. The price was reasonable. Food was flavorful. It was really worth a try. The staff were great. We will definitely be back again.

Salmon teriyaki Bento box

I was looking for lunch in Little Tokyo and I liked that this place was not as packed as the other places, so I jumped on the opportunity to get a delicious lunch and it did not disappoint! I know they are known for their ramen but I was really pulled in by their Bento Box. Mostly because it was so much food and reasonably priced. I got the salmon teriyaki bento box and man was that a lot of food! Comes with a full piece of salmon teriyaki, salad with ginger dressing to start, California sushi roll (4 pc), tempura shrimp and veggies, an egg roll, and chicken karaage (Japanese dark meat fried chicken). Salmon was perfectly cooked with the classic sweet and salty teriyaki marinade. Loved the ginger dressing on the salad. And the tempura veggies were even a stand out! Loved that they had broccoli, Kobucha squash, and sweet potatoes. All the food felt authentic and well seasoned. The service was great; our waitress was super friendly and our food came out fast. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the atmosphere. It looks a little worn and outdated inside, and the bathrooms were also very worn and kind of dirty. Definitely wouldn't go here for a nice date, but definitely great for a casual midday lunch pick me up in Little Tokyo.

Surprisingly haven't tried this place till recently after all my years of visiting this plaza. We decided to finally try it since we were craving some small bites and curry lol. Service was quick, staff were friendly, and the menu was easy to get through. The hostess also helped give more info on their validation for the parking nearby which we didn't use but good to know for next time! Plenty of seating and even outdoor seating is available which is nice so you can enjoy the fresh air and plaza vibes. The curry was super delicious and really fills you up! The gyoza was probably my favorite (even dipped some in the curry). They did the pan seared so it's not fully fried and still soft in the middle. Their sauce though was fantastic! It was like a ponzu but not super citrusy, it was just right. Would definitely come back and try their other menu items! They had a yellowtail carpaccio that I'd like to try next time. Second time to Maruya and it does not disappoint. They have Sapporo on tap and that was a great start! Had the #6 #13 rolls , both rolled just right fresh and tasty. The #6 is Under Control and 13 is the Orange Dragon. Great place for a casual sushi dinner and very good service.

We love coming to Maruya especially during the non-peak hours. At 2pm we were seated immediately but we were a little surprised that it filled up an hour later. But then again it comes as no surprise because of how delicious their ramen and sushi are. The price point is a little on the high side but in this economy, that's to be expected. The service and the food are impeccable. I wanted to give them 5 stars but they haven't fixed their bathroom situation. No disrespect to the owners, I know how hard it is to run a business, but the mirror still hasn't been cleaned so it's impossible to see one's reflection and the trash bin in the ladies' room was overflowing. I hope they can address this because my family just absolutely loves coming to this restaurant!

Miso Ramen

Delicious ramen spot that I always come to whenever I'm near Little Tokyo! I always order their Miso ramen (no bean sprouts) with a sushi roll on the side. It's really good. We also decided to try a few side orders this time like the spring rolls and gyoza. There is seating outside and inside. It can be packed depending on what day of the week you come by. Weekends are subject to be packed sometimes. There are only 2 restrooms and there is usually a line for it whenever I had to use the restroom so just a heads up. A little bit on the pricey side. But it's rare I come out here. Other than that, my favorite ramen spot in Little Tokyo hands down!

My spicy scallop roll and yellowtail Maki were so sad..... Also the seaweed was discolored on the Maki so they're using old seaweed

My spicy scallop roll and yellowtail Maki were so sad..... like did the chef get mad and take it out on the scallop?? Also the seaweed was discolored on the Maki so they're using old seaweed my mistake for choosing this spot and those rolls :')... on the other hand the mermaid roll was so full, well proportioned, great presentation.... what happened?! Clearly two different chefs. Service was really nice though. This spot is giving sushi and ramen for tourists for more emphasis on rolls rather than actual sushi. Left full but dissatisfied :/

Roll Yellowtail Roll with Scallion

Absolutely mediocre, stale, and horrendous quality of sushi here. Everything from the fish, rice, and even seaweed was COMPLETELY STALE AND FISHY SMELLINY. We needed to use the bathroom and paid $10 for the most minitaure, disgusting sushi I've seen in my entire life. The service was very poor and unfriendly. My boyfriend ended up getting sick with diarrhea and vomit. NEVER AGAIN - DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!!!!! Such a dissapointment to Japan Town.

Sashimi Platter, Ramen, & Chicken Karage

Had a date night with my husband and LOVED the sashimi. Tasted really fresh and with variety of fish, worth the $40. My husband also enjoyed the ramen! The broth itself was really good and with the spice mixed in it was even better! They also have a whole alcohol menu, get the plum wine if you're craving something sweet. It is LA so we did park a couple blocks away at a parking structure. Place is located in Little Toyko with a bunch of stores and restaurants nearby.

Pretty basic and rather overpriced. The beer was well presented and it was nice sitting outside in the sun capturing this sapporo advert picture. The salmon sushi was $20 for bits of salmon on top of rice and avocado, and not great salmon at that. It's ok for a quick bite but I wouldn't stake an entire meal here.

We usually order the same ramen but my husband and son decided to try something different this time. My husband ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen and my son ordered the Shio Ramen. Mine was, of course, delicious as always but I tried theirs too and they were both very tasty! Our only complaint was that it was also very warm inside the restaurant. We were hoping to cool down a little while we ate but unfortunately, that wish was not granted. LOL We still really enjoyed the food, though! And my husband definitely enjoyed his cold beer!

They were very knowledgeable in what was gluten free and what wasn't. The only unfortunate part is that all the meats are marinated in a sauce that is not gluten free. So you can only get tofu or no protein. Even if you select no protein, it comes out to be the same price. Other than the gluten free ramen, we ordered a karage bowl, dry spicy ramen, and spicy tuna roll. The karage bowl had chicken that was NOT fried. I'm not sure how it's cooked but the chicken came out slimy. I was very disappointed as I was looking forward to crunchy karage. The dry ramen had noodles that were way overcooked. The flavoring was okay. Nothing to be impressed about. The spicy tuna roll was probably the best thing there. They had pickled yellow radish that we thought was interesting.

If you have not been to this ramen spot, you are missing out! I still remember that broth like it was yesterday..... so flavorful, so rich, delicious umami flavors. There's not a lot of seating here and there's also not a long line; however, weirdly when we visited people came exactly when another person was leaving. I don't know if it was just timed perfectly or what, but this place definitely stays busy. If you're not afraid of garlic then I would highly recommend the black garlic for sure and of course don't forget to order your extra egg for good luck! You have to pay for the parking area to get into the gated area, but it's not too bad. They won't let you in the gated area if there's no parking which is probably how they have consistent guests but also kind of timed perfectly. I mean, there are other restaurants nearby also that are as busy, but that's what I noticed when I came. I'm always in the area and there's too many delicious food spots in Southern California, but I would love to come back to this one. The staff was also really nice and gave us our space. Restrooms were okay, we came in the afternoon so it wasn't spotless, but it wasn't too bad either.

I got the green salad and the Tenshin Han which is a shrimp omelette over steamed rice with sweet & sour sauce. Eating it was like wearing a blanket on a cold day . Except the weather was hot out, but nonetheless it hit a nice cozy spot. It did come out quite hot btw, so I did have to wait a little bit for it to cool down. I would most definitely order it again if I'm ever in the area and it's colder. I also recommend eating it with the salad to balance out the salty flavor because it builds the more you keep eating it. The portions were also big, so it could be shared between 2-3 people or just one if you were really hungry like I was. I look forward to visiting again and eating it when it's much cooler !

I was drawn to Kouraku because of the very vintage, Showa-era facade and interior. Without knowing…read moreanything about the place, I decided to stop in and was surprised to learn this is the oldest ramen shop in the United States. I thought that was incredibly cool. I was seated at the counter and didn't have to wait long for the waitress to come around, who recommended ordering via the QR code on the wall in front of me. I liked that it wasn't the *only* way to order, though, and that I can still have a human interaction and order with the waitress if I prefer. There was so much on the menu that I wanted to try that I actually had a tough time ordering, but I eventually decided on the mabo ramen. I was surprised by how big the bowl was, filled with a generous serving of noodles and mabo tofu. It was fantastic, and such a unique ramen compared to what most places offer. I returned three months later on another weekend trip to L.A. and went with the chicken katsu curry. This time, my husband came with me and he got the tenshin chahan ankake, which is a big pile of chahan (fried rice) covered in a shrimp omelette with a gravy pour-over. The katsu was juicy on the inside and incredibly crispy on the outside, in a flavorful curry with a nice little kick of heat. My husband really liked the chahan and cleaned his plate. We finished the meal with an order of the pudding, which had a subtle caramel sweetness and wasn't too cloying or overwhelming. There was a stark difference in how busy they were the first time I visited versus the second. I think I just got lucky the first time and ate there during a lull, because there was no wait to get in on a weekend night and hardly anyone eating inside. But when I came by the second time, we had to put our names on a waitlist, there were a few parties ahead of us, and they were short-staffed. We were seated within 10-15 minutes of putting ourselves on the waitlist and the waiters and waitresses were all very nice despite the crush of customers. Food still came out pretty quickly, too. Kouraku will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this November. They've certainly earned it, and I hope they continue on for more decades to come. I'm looking forward to my next visit.
