Red bean mochi ice cream! Love the little fork!
    Sarah H.

Just ducked in for a sweet treat, definitely coming back for a meal. They had my order ready very quickly. Loved that they gave me a little wooden fork to poke into the mochi so I could bite it like a popsicle. Waiting to check out all the food and the menu and I look forward to returning for a full sit down meal. Feels like locals more than tourists. I dug the vibe!

This is as close as you can get to the type of restaurant you remember in Hawaii, serving good tasting sushi and sashimi. Nothing will surprise you and you will get exactly what you expect. I like it because it hasn't gotten the "sweet tooth" which is to put unagi sauce over everything. This is as you remember it before. Before all the sweetness and fancy stuff came to be. Solid, tasty. Very nice!

Reliable and authentic experience in Little Tokyo. The service is simple and fast, the menu is easy to read and has all the standards, it's very much what I think of when I think of Japanese American restaurant. It is busy but casual, and I like the wood decor.

    Tempura and sashimi bento.

6/5 dinner. Bento with tempura and sashimi. Miso soup was delicious. Tempura shrimp love. Everything else was a bit tasteless and mushy. Nice service. Cold draft Asahi beer.

A lovely Saturday evening dinner at Oomasa. The plaza was busy. The restaurant is first come first serve. Luckily a big booth was available and we were seated right away. The menu has a good variety of choices. The sushi, sashimi, and shrimp tempura was fresh and hot, cook to order. Steamy hot, crispy fresh, and melts in your mouth- a must order item! Our server was very nice and attentive. We had fun watching the sushi chefs, enjoying the ambiance, each other's company, and the fresh, delicious fish and seafood. The restaurant will validate two hours of free plaza parking. Thereafter is $4 per additional hour. We'll be back to try other menu items and to visit the plaza.

Second time here and it was another great experience. It was a lot busier this time around, and we had to wait about 20 min to be seated. Once inside, our server was polite and friendly. This time I ordered the Philly roll which was delicious and very fresh. Inside this restaurant has a very authentic look and feel, which was why we chose to come back to this spot. They validate parking for 2 hours here which is also nice.

Small but cozy spot tucked inside Little Tokyo Village. The service was attentive and friendly. I was surprised by the wide selection of fish available for nigiri, and everything tasted very fresh. The cuts of fish were on the thicker side, and while I usually prefer a more conservative slice, I was pretty hungry that day and definitely appreciated the generosity. They also have an excellent selection of appetisers, and I ended up ordering two of each because they were just that good. Ankimo: 9/10 - Fresh, rich, and savoury, paired perfectly with the citrusy ponzu and the crunchy texture of the wakame. Fried Squid Legs: 9/10 - Loved that they actually give you a massive portion of tentacles. Crispy, satisfying, and well seasoned. Soft Shell Crab: 8/10 - Simple, crunchy, and packed with flavour.

they serve miso with a throwaway plastic spoon. just don't serve with a spoon at all instead of a piece of junk! feels cheap+tacky.

generally tasty and good. come for the convenience, ok pricing, and energetic tourist-laden japantown crowd (at least on the weekend, when i went). the food won't change your life or knock your socks off but it's a perfectly fine, pleasant enough place to grab a bite! service was fine, food was good, my only complaint (yes i know i'm being picky), is they served 6 of us miso soup with a throwaway plastic spoon. this was the first food item we were served - and it really made it feel like we were eating in the food court of a shopping mall in the 90's. tho tbh- i guess we practically were. but it really 'cheapened' the meal. i'd rather have no spoon than literally, a piece of garbage that serves no real purpose and is a horrid, wasteful way to serve and eat a meal. a disposable palstic spoon? no one goes to a restaurant to eat off a plastic spoon. i'm not eating in my car, you know. its easy enough to sip miso straight from the bowl, the japanese traditionally do it. so they need to scratch this excess nonsensical and polluting waste. besides the fact it is so low-brow it made me wonder what the rest of the meal would be like. but- the food was tasty enough. the cold draft beef good and fairly-priced enought at $8. had a combo sushi sashimi tempura platter for $28. fairly priced and totally on par with other 'quick' japanese restraurants i've been to. i'd come back for a quick bite and convenience, if i was with friends and we needed a sit down place amidst the hustle and bustle.

It's a nice restaurant at the end of the village in Little Tokyo. It's a lot bigger on the inside than it seems. We went on a very busy day for lunch, when I signed in to the waitlist, we were about 10th on the list, but wait less than 30 mins. Parking is all over the place in Little Tokyo, but it's as expected, though they do 2hr validation if you parked in the village. Oomasa has a good mix of Japanese dishes for everyone at a variety of price points, generally on the higher end though. I enjoyed their bento boxes. There's a variety of them to choose from and they're well balanced. All come with rice and miso soup. Portions themselves, like most Japanese restaurants are on the smaller side, but it's enough to fill you up and I think prices are reasonably fair. We got the ika geso age since it's normally one of our favorites appetizers at a Japanese restaurant. Crispy and well seasoned. I wish there was more of it. You don't even need to use the accompanying chipotle mayo sauce, but it's a welcomed addition We got the chicken teriyaki and sashimi bento as well as the oomasa special bento box. I really enjoyed their sashimi, all the fish was portioned well, fresh, and delicious. The teriyaki was a low point. It wasn't bad by any means, but I wanted it to be crispier. I would recommend getting sauce on the side since it's heavily layered in it. Green tea is from a can, not housemade. Beer is on draft. Service is excellent. Staff is friendly and helpful. They'll check on you at appropriate times. Service was fast, we didn't have to wait long for anything.

It's been over 8 years since the last time I've been to Oomasa. I used to come here several times a year while my daughter was attending USC & UCLA Med School and it was always a must to dine here during my trips. I drove in from Vegas with my step-daughter, her husband and their children, and we had to come here for dinner. The taste and quality of their food hasn't changed, I'm happy to say, and everything was as good as I remember. They're located in the heart of Little Tokyo, in the Japan Town Plaza. It's a little mall filled with a dozens of Japanese restaurants and themed stores offering a variety of food and merch. The staff is friendly, and many of them speak both Japanese and English. Since we had 2 small children, we were seated at a booth, rather than the sushi bar. Service was quick and our food orders came out within a few minutes of ordering. The karaage chicken appetizer is one of the best we've had anywhere, and is a definite must try. The fish is very fresh, and they offer a baked mussel appetizer that is also one of my favorites. It was a great dinner and I only hope it's not another 8 years before I enjoy Oomasa again.

    2/14/2026 ika geso (squid)
    Tiffany H.

Food was very underwhelming and expensive af (2 stars since I guess it's edible), but service was friendly and welcoming (+1 star). I got the ika geso (fried squid legs) for appetizer. The moment it came out, my heart dropped because WHY WERE THERE SO FEW PIECES unlike the photo in the menu. There were 7 pieces, so that's about $1.54 a piece ($10.75 for the dish)! The fish in the chirashi sushi tasted and smelled fishy, and the texture was kinda soggy. Too much rice, not enough fish. The chirashi sushi was $31.75 for a bowl, which felt criminal for subpar quality. My friend and I each got a chirashi sushi, so the total bill ended up being $80+; my friend and I were both sorely disappointed.

I'm a HUGE sushi fan and was visiting my sister in LA for the weekend. We visited Little Tokyo and hours of shopping until we dropped, it was time to eat! We didn't have our mind set on a place beforehand but we decided to go with this place. There wasn't a huge wait for 2 and we sat at the sushi bar which ended up being a great experience! We were presented with hot towels which is similar to Japan and I ordered the Spicy tuna roll and the Caterpillar roll (not pictured). I've had a fair share of sushi in my life and I was shocked to say that my favorite sushi ever was in Little Tokyo - but it's so true! It was sooooo fresh and yummy and it was very easy and not super filling to eat and the sushi chef was super kind. When I go back to LA, I will definitely be stopping here again!

Felt a little famished and always hesitant about coming here because of how busy it is in this area. I am glad I was able to try the place. We were greeted as soon as we entered and service was quick. I was shocked because the place seemed busy. The ambiance was quaint and welcoming. Everything was clean and well kept. My japanese mama liked it and gave a thumbs up. My Chirashi was excellent. I would recommend this dish because of the variety. Parking around here is tricky. There is a parking close by that is $4 that is across from the metro station.

Ask the Community - Oomasa Restaurant

    Do you take reservations?

It's walk in, when busy you can place your name on a list, but beware if your name is called and you're not there, they move on

Is there an omakase experience? If there is, how much is it?

No, I don't think there is omakase offered here.

Is it all you can eat sushi?

Nope, there is sushi but it's not ayce.

Did they bring back the normal bowls/utensils or are they still using all disposable plastic? I miss oomasa but last time I was there they only use disposable dishes due to the pandemic. The food didn't taste as good on styrofoam

Yes everything is back to normal. You should go back and try it!

    Is there outdoor seating?

    yes

Is the bar back on? Anyone eat at the sushi bar lately?

    yes

Can you guys accommodate large groups?

yes like 8 would probably be fine

    How's the sushi?

Bomb traditional hits. Great rice flavoring.

Can they accommodate a group of 10-12 or would we have to split up?

I think it's likely that you will have to split your group in half. They have booths that (I think) can squeeze 6 people each! You could try to ask them if they could save them next to each other. I would call ahead of time and ask.

    All you can eat sushi?

No, it's not AYCE. That's how they serve quality foods.

    Do they offer ayce?

No, and for a good reason! I would make them go bankrupt with my appetite and craving their food! And just forget about it if my whole family goes there!! But, the portions are quite generous!

The sea urchins one is creamy and VERY RICH. The cream sauce bend in really well with the sea urchins. But definitely not something you would order if you are on a weaker stomach. The duck udon is flavorful with plenty of meat. The soup pair perfectly with the udon as well. There was a line outside before it opened. But not too bad. Udon noodles were good, but it was not excellent. It did have light chewy texture. BUT in comparison to Meiji Seimen, it fell short, really short! I was disappointed. BEEF BOWL It was delicious! Beef was tender and moist and loved the caramelized onion too. Rice was delicious too, not dry nor mushy. Served with pickled red ginger. A very satisfying bowl. Sat at the bar, so watched them make udon from scratch, which was nice. WAIT LIST There was a line when I got there, just as it opened. It wasn't long, but everyone wrote their name down on a wait list. There's a sheet of paper placed on the table outside. Please write your name down ASAP, as that will help in making sure that you will grab a seat. Also, the lines are disorganized too, so it's best to write down your name, so no one cuts in front of you. It is a small restaurant. Limited seats. CUSTOMER SERVICE It was okay. Everyone got in the restaurant in the order they came in. Service was quick and there were no delays in taking orders. The server came by quickly and dropped off the check as she saw that I was nearly finished with my meal. PARKING Parked at Joe's Autoparks. It was $15! I did not know until after I paid the ticket. Very difficult to find parking in this area, so not many options unless you want to walk really far, back to your car in 90 degree heat. There was another parking garage next to Joe's, but the price was the same! Would I come back again? Not sure. Given that the udon wasn't what I expected, it may be my last time here. Also, parking sucks.

Don't let the line of people outside, or the lack of parking, deter you. The food is worth a bit of a wait and they have good efficiency with turning over tables. The beef bulgogi really stands out for me. The peppers and mushrooms elevate the dish beyond the onions and beef I'm used to at most Korean places. It makes the dish something you can confidently order as a standalone meal. But it was also a sizable portion. So if you are willing to share your food, the dish works well if you want room to try another item. The vegetarian bibimbap came with tofu so you can still get your protein. I didn't personally eat this dish but I'm a stranger to these parts and this was the dish that helped my group discover this restaurant. So it comes highly regarded. If you are looking for something a bit different, and don't need the crispy rice cooked to the hot stone pot, the Yulmu Bibimbap is a great option. The barley rice gives a unique feel to the dish and the bean paste stew made the dish more interactive than most. The stew was bubbling hot and was packing a punch as well. So be prepared for both kinds of heat with that dish. But definitely good, and well worth the deviation if you want to stray from the classics that this place nails every time. This is a review only of their happy hour specifically, not of their ramen, which I have not tried…read moreand can't speak to the quality of. I actually became aware of the existence of this restaurant *because* they had a happy hour sign out in front, advertising, among other things, $4 salmon poke "tacos" (which was definitely actually a tostada, but still), and $3 nigori sake to go with it, which sounded pretty bomb - when I passed by the sign on my way to an event at Death & Co nearby, I took note of it but wasn't interested in food. However, when I left that event, an event I thought was going to provide a lot more food than it actually did, I absolutely *was* interested in food, and remembered that the sign advertised not only a traditional happy hour (open until 6 weekdays, 2:30-5:30 Saturday/Sunday), but also the same prices during a reverse happy hour (8 to close weekdays, 9 to close on the weekend). Given it was, at that moment, just after 8 on a Wednesday, I knew exactly where I was going to get the second half of my dinner from. Funny enough, I will say, the salmon poke that drew me in, was just... good. Don't get me wrong, if I were offered them for free, I'd eat at *least* a dozen. They were quite tasty - also like 2 bites worth of food (so eating a dozen of them would not be remotely difficult to do.) Salmon poke is wonderful, but if I wanted poke, I'd go find a poke place - even $4 felt a bit pricey for the size (they're $6 when it isn't happy hour), so I'm glad I decided to also try their karaage. Their karaage is BOMB - some of the best I've had, honestly. $7 for a 4-piece order of their karaage, by contrast, feels like a very reasonable price, and $5 (during happy hour) an absolute steal. Great karaage, great sauce, super fulfilling. The happy hour on karaage would be enough of a draw by itself - but separate from that, so would the $3 happy hour on sake, including both a regular house cold sake and a nigori. As you can see from the picture, they also intentionally overpour their sake, which is not only a very pretty presentation, but also an impressive amount of sake for $3 (heck, for DTLA, a pretty impressive amount of sake even at their normal $5 price). They also have $6 happy hour shochu/sake/juice cocktails that looked pretty good, though I didn't try one. Service was great, too - sometimes you can tell a restaurant is less excited to serve someone who clearly just came in for a drink and a snack, but that was not my experience here. Verdict is, I definitely want to come back and try their ramen sometime, but I would definitely make sure to do it either before or after their prime dinner hour, to take advantage of happy hour pricing. (And I would definitely get more of that karaage as a side. I will probably also make a point to do so as a snack, subsequent to any future events I go to in the area that end around 8 on a weekday, as well, for as long as that happy hour remains such a draw, price-wise.)

Food (3/5): Pretty ok ramen! You come to Tsujita Artisan Noodle in Arts District for the Tsukemen…read more Their tsukemen is creamy with deep umami flavor. Their noodles have a bounciness and chewiness that hold the broth you dip your noodles in. I do wish the broth was hotter because the noodles are traditionally served cold. I've come here for their Naruto collaboration and to try their traditional ramen where their noodles come with the broth and it tastes significantly different than their tsukemen which I didn't have a liking to. It was missing some oomph that not only differentiates this ramen from others I've tasted before but also gets people to keep coming. Service (5/5): Quick service! Every time I've been there hasn't been a wait. Price (4/5): To compensate for taste I do think the price needs to be lowered a bit. The tsukemen to me was definitely worth it. Ambiance (4/5): Cute little modern shop. It won't fit many big parties but it is perfect for duos.

Their ramen noodles are always cooked perfectly (I like them a little firm) and their broths are super flavorful, their eggs cooked perfectly. I usually enjoy their spicy or black garlic broths which add extra kicks. Daikokuya can be busy throughout the day, but there servers and kitchen staff work hard to turn around orders and tables relatively quickly. Anytime is a good time for ramen from Daikokuya.

To be clear, you really can't go wrong with any of the restaurants on this street and I recommend just going with whichever one has the shortest wait when you show up. Thankfully we only had to wait about 20 minutes and got a table inside. There were 6 of us and they made us squeeze into a booth built for 4 which was a little annoying but we made it work. I ordered their signature Daikoku Ramen which was very flavorful and filling, just wish there had been more meat! My husband got the poke bowl with salmon and tuna which is a great dish for those on the protein grind. Service was mixed, they brought some dishes out immediately and then others in our group had to wait longer to get their food. Overall food was tasty and I would go back.
