This place is cool. The place is small, so it's awkward when you're the first people in because it's basically just you and the staff in a tiny room. The staff has nowhere to hide either, so there's a lot of accidental eye contact while you're just trying to settle in and take the place in. But then it starts filling up pretty fast, and that's when the vibe really kicks in. The bustle, the noise, the punk rock energy -- it all starts working together really well. We just did a couple apps and sake. The Japanese Nachos are wild. Only complaint is they could use more chips for the amount of queso/cheese they give you. BUT... if you also order the Japanese mountain fries, you absolutely need to dip those into the leftover queso too. Honestly both items together almost feel like they should just be one giant share plate instead of two separate dishes. But this isn't a Chili's. Also make sure you talk to the chef/owner hes probably there making hand rolls. Ask him about music, his band, where they're playing next, all that. Came here late on a Friday night for a light dinner and had a great time. Service was super friendly and the vibes are punky and fun. The menu changes regularly, so they have the daily offerings listed on 2 white boards - one for the raw bar and one for cooked food. Between the two of us, we ordered the agedashi mochi, vegan karaage, and mountain potato fries. We also ordered a glass of sake and a sapporo. The agedashi mochi was really tasty and fun! We've only ever had agedashi tofu so it was interesting to have chewy mochi in a savory broth like that, but we loved it! The vegan karaage that day was mushroom. It was served with a little salad and a bright mayo on the side which was a perfect pairing. The Japanese mountain fries were filling, but I think they were a bit under-salted, and I do wish they were served with a sauce. I'd probably skip them next time. I will say that their sushi looked really good because we saw other people ordering it. If we were hungrier, we would have ordered some, but that'll have to be saved for next time. Overall, we loved it! The prices are fair and the vibes are chill. Will definitely be back if I'm around Little Tokyo again soon. read more

Seriously had an amazing time at Funhouse! The chef Tsubasa is a bit of a punk legend in LA, and his food did not disappoint. My crew got like every vegan option available that day (they are rotating the menu!) and also some fish stuff that they loved. the vegan Eel is an eggplant dish that was SO good! A little sweet, a little umami, a little char. Seriously a perfect egg plant ! The vegan Karage (fried chicken) was kind of the star in my opinion. It's a battered mushroom that is so good! He gets the crunchy texture and flavor, while retaining the mushroom just enough. I absolutely loved this I could have eaten a bucket. The app order comes with a little salad, but you can also add them on to your curry. I got the spicy vegan tomato curry and it was AMAZING! V flavorful! I love spice, this wasn't too spicy and it had really great little veggies in there. We also got the mountain potatoes which were delicious The ephemera is really exciting if you're a punk fan. He's got some OG Slash mags and merch and so many great flyers!!! And they also have a very cute old school diner counter which I love. Cute vibe! Toro sashimi with kelp was extremely unique and so good! The wasabi was fresh and was perfect with it. We also got the beef udon rice and it was a perfect savory dish that complimented the meal. A great Izakaya with a simple but tasty menu. I went for the beef bowl which has some definite high end Yoshinoya vibes. They've also got a selection of sashimi, soups, salads and more. It's tiny, but tucked far enough away from the main drag that you can probably get a seat. read more

Love finding new spots to eat! This spot has been open for a couple of months and my friend and I went for dinner on a Tuesday evening. I was too hungry and forgot to take pictures of the food, but this is what we ordered: Ceviche, Salad, vegan kaarage(mushrooms), garlic edamame and matcha tiramisu for dessert. Be warned that they have a limited menu, but the things they do offer are very yummy--and there are many vegan options. -Ceviche - my friend had it and enjoyed it -Salad- so simple and yet so delicious, the dressing was particularly good. Perfect for a hot day. -Vegan Kaarage- this was good enough...texture is fantastic but could use more sauce. We asked for chilli to add to it. -Edamame was finger licking good. -Matcha tiramisu- very good would order it again in a heartbeat. The staff was friendly, the place was clean and cozy. Absolutely phenomenal food! Creative yet traditional, outstanding freshness, flavor & presentation. Loved all the cute dishes & how beautifully everything was presented. Standout flavors in every dish we ordered. The fish broth was a great starter. The mountain potatoes are the best fried food I've ever tried. Sashimi options were divine, everything exceeded any expectations I had walking in. The owner is very kind, and informative about the dishes he is serving. You can tell he is passionate about what he does, you can taste it in every bite. Our server was attentive & kept our glasses full constantly. To top off the food being outstanding - the decor is a perfectly tailored mix of historical punk flyers, shirts, and memorabilia mixed with funky fun wallpapered bathrooms. Always have a good time and good service at Funhouse! Servers AND founder of the Izakaya are very accommodating and attentive to each customer! The food is curated so well and you can tell that the founder put his whole heart and soul into each dish. Ambiance is right up my alley, love that the walls are covered with flyers and posters from all of my favorite punk bands. Anyone that has anything bad to say about Funhouse is more than likely already unhappy in life cos there is no way the staff AND founder will let any customer leave unsatisfied with the food and service! Okay, are you ready to step into a Jim Jarmusch film? This is it. The music, atmosphere and decor make it a one off like no other. The food: Shishito Peppers? Yes please. Vegan eel? Really F´ing good. Fried mushrooms and the Mountain Fries are a must. But the real belle of the ball is the Sashimi. Blue Fin Tuna and the Amberjack were both incredibly fresh. Walking in feels like stepping through a punk time portal directed by Jim Jarmusch, a 1950s diner meets a 70s/80s punk venue, with a Japanese food menu from heaven. I've never had anything not completely delicious at Funhouse. The sashimi is so fresh and great. The chef/owner makes wonderful sauces and prepares everything beautifully. A random craving I now get is the Funhouse salad. The dressing is out of this world. Was I expecting to crave a salad from an Izakaya place? No, but I'm not mad about it. My husband is not a fish guy, but he had the beef and rice bowl one time we went and the curry another time and loved them both. Oh! Funhouse is one of the closest things I have found to an authentic japanese itzakaya in LA. Those little places that have had the same owner for a gazillion years and have become an extension of the owners personality and obsessions. Every detail tells a story, from the incense in the bathroom to the show posters on the wall, everything works to create your experience. And the food is fantastic. They keep the menu small but everything is made with incredible care and unexpected flavor combinations. Everyday there is a gorgeous selection of fresh sashimi, delicate and decadent. They also have creative, delicious vegan options, tonight I had the spicy tomato curry with vegan karaage and it was the best comfort food imaginable. The japanese ceviche was another outstanding dish. But their agedashi tofu may be my favorite, the dashi is a little extra briney and it gives it an extra special tanginess that I love. And their house sake is the best I have had in LA. They don't have an extensive sake list, but what they have is fantastic, and not something you will find anywhere else in Little Tokyo. I've got a soft spot for hayashi rice, so I didn't think twice once I saw it was on their menu. I also ordered the gyoza and a glass of the Momomo peach shochu. The shochu was incredibly good and I drained my glass pretty quickly, but at $12.50 a glass I wasn't going to order another, unfortunately. The hayashi rice was one of the best versions I've had of this dish -- frankly, even better than one of the places I had it in Ginza. The egg was also cooked perfectly, so the yolk mixed in with the gravy, not all overcooked and hard. I cleaned my plate, it was so good, and I've been thinking about this dish ever since I had it. The gyoza were really good and served in one of the most generous portions I've seen, with eight to an order. I finished my meal with the hojicha pudding, which was served with a hot mug of hojicha alongside it. This was a light, airy, elegant way to end the meal and loved every bite of it. I'm genuinely looking forward to the next time I get to eat here. From the staff to the food, I just really liked my meal and experience at Suehiro and can't wait to make another visit to L.A. to go back again.

We did DineLA menu. We got crispy rice w/ tuna and the salmon carpaccio as our starters, very good. We then did the spicy tuna roll, salmon roll, and blue crab roll. It was delicious and probably the main star of the show. We then got pork belly and miso cod, a little salty and burnt so not the best. We got the lobster pasta and short ribs, again short ribs were salty, pasta was good. We ended with matcha mochi cake which took forever to get to us. We were there for a total of 2.5 hours and it just felt so slow and I can understand to an extent because other parties getting seated 30mins - 1 hr after us got to leave before us. We paid and asked for validation to find out there was no validation given to us so that really was the cherry on top! Overall, would probably not come back. Gave them 3 stars because the rolls and apps were really good.

I don't care how many restaurants put that out, it's always fantastic. The only roll we got was the Cherry Blossom roll, I was intrigued by the menus indication that it didn't have rice. A large roll with 11 pieces came out that was 95% fish, the remaining 5% being bits of avocado and two sauces that paired exquisitely. It tasted excellent. Our server recommended their Kid Season sake which was exactly what I was looking for: filtered and semi sweet. Highly recommend!
