Poor customer service on 5/16 at around 8pm over the phone. I was looking to book them for our rehearsal dinner but it's very difficult to get ahold of someone. I tried emailing tamonyoaku@gmail.com which is what's displayed on the Miyako website (where their restaurant is located), but the email bounced back. When I called the restaurant, I had a short exchange with someone to try and figure it out and she kept saying to send an email but would not share the email address. She eventually hung up on me. I tried to call back several times but the calls kept failing after one or two rings. When someone finally picked up a few minutes later, it was just noise and no answer. If you're looking to book them for private events, Tamon is not the right place. read more

Tamon Bento: enjoyed this. Tasty yet subtle flavors with the vegetables. Nice delicate fry on tempura, though the veggies could have been a little softer. Cooked fish was salty and paired well with rice. Rice a little dry. Tamon Nigiri set: roll that came with the set was a little dry. Shrimp not great quality. Sashimi quality pretty good but not great overall. Service was good and attentive although we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time. It was Sunday around lunchtime. Located on the 2nd floor of the Miyako Hotel in Little Tokyo, this spot id for sure a hidden gem. We made reservations for a Sunday night dinner and were promptly seated. Let's get the party started. We came to celebrate a friend's birthday dinner in omakase style. We started with blue fin tuna and scallops. Then we were served Japanese vegetables with taro,, beans, lotus roots and carrots. Then came Shalit, bluefin tuna, and yellowtail sushi. The grilled fish was sea bass and it was super flavorful and juicy. Stopped jack,ackarel and horse mackerel came next. The highlight for me was the sea urchin and salmon roe. Wonderful place. Some of the best sushi I've had around here. We came here on a rainy night and wound up being the only people inside the restaurant. The restaurant sits in little Tokyo and you get a great view overlooking 1st street along the row of restaurants. Inside is a quaint and quiet, and intimate atmosphere, they keep it very cultural here as there's even a small room In the restaurant that has Japanese style seating. Located inside the Miayko Hotel and on the second floor, they do have parking inside however we found a nice cozy spot on 1st street next to the restaurant. This was a sushi date night and we enjoyed everything to the very last bite. Super fresh and super tasty. Some good recommendations to get are the Salmon Set ( if you're a salmon lover like me) the Blue Fin Tuna set along with their Nabeyaki Ramen and their signature Tamon Bento. Okay don't judge me. I know it's illegal to get steak and fries at a sushi place but we stumbled upon their happy hour after previously staying at the Miyako, and have been getting their steak and fries ever since. Their fries are truly the best fries I've ever had in my entire life. They're chunky and crinkle cut, so they remind me of crinkle cut potato wedges. The sides are perfectly crispy, and the potato inside is SO SOFT!! Their sake and eel and sashimi are also pretty good too, but it's just a tradition to get their fries. Even though the JapanUp! Magazine advertised the breakfast buffet at this location from 6:30 am to 9:30 am, few (except for the hotel patrons) are aware of its food offerings at this time of day. It appears I am the first to review it for the breakfast buffet. The buffet is your typical Japanese curry and miso soup + continental style breakfast. It costs $28 plus tax and tip, but if you are a hotel guest, you get a coupon for a cost of $21 plus tax and tip. So, not exactly a steal. If I were to price it at a good value cost, I would say that $18 per person is closer to what I would have liked to pay. Food: decently tasty. Curry rice, miso, natto, scrambled eggs, pickled items, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, grilled salmon, sausage, bacon, and your offering of bakery items, such as waffles, danishes, muffins, and the like. Only fruit offered was honeydew melon, which was quite fresh. There was yoplait French vanilla yogurt. Drinks included milk, orange juice, and water. Coffee is offered, but you have to ask for it. There are hardly any customers in this place at this time , and we arrived here at 8:30 am. Piano music in the background. Servers don't hover over you too much. Generally, I tend to shy away from AYCE establishments but in this case it was well worth it. The appetizers were also very good which were represented by beef teriyaki, salmon and chicken karaage. We had lunch at Tamon Sushi, located on the 2nd floor of the Miyako Hotel, in the heart of Los Angeles' Little Tokyo. The restaurant is very unassuming; we barely saw any advertisement for it in the hotel, I only knew about the restaurant from researching our trip to Little Tokyo. When we entered the restaurant, it was still empty, having just opened. The young lady who would be our server, warmly greeted our party and led us to a nearby table. The adults in our party all opted for the ribeye steak while my niece chose the kids' bento; additionally, we order a couple of pieces of sushi (sea urchin and a toro hand-roll) and an order of their grilled pork belly appetizer. The food was good, the steaks were cooked to perfection and the potato wedges served with the steaks; crunchy on the outside but fluffy on the inside, they were basically a whole baked potato cut into wedges and deep fried-- yummy but very filling. The steaks were well seasoned and fork-tender. My niece loved her kids bento which was comprised of a sliced up SPAM matsubi, Japanese fried chicken wings, some tamago (sweet Japanese omelette) and a sliced orange. We all enjoyed our meals, I was especially surprised by the butabara dakon complimentary appetizer (stewed pirk belly and daikon radish garnished with a pea pod). I didn't think I would instantly fall in love with a piece of stewed radish but it was so melt-in-your-mouth scrumptious, I became an instant fan and will be dreaming and craving about that radish. We still had enough room to be tempted by some dessert; we ordered their matcha tiramisu and the chocolate mousse. The desserts were equally as delicious as our savory meal, we ate every bit of it. We first discovered Tamon many years ago when the wait time was unbearable at practically all of the other sushi spots in Little Tokyo. The fish is very fresh and delicious. The service is amazing. If there's one thing I hate, it's spending money on terrible food. I've heard decent reviews about this place from friends so I decided to give it a try. I really wanted to like this spot but there was just a lot to dislike: The fish is NOT fresh. In fact, it had a weird gray color going on that made it skeptical to eat- when we told the waiters that the fish wasn't fresh, he simply told us "it is fresh" then offered to switch it to a different cut (still not fresh). Granted it's not an expensive spot, I didn't expect top notch quality but come on. It didn't even come close to decent quality. My fresh water eel had a pungent freezer taste that I could not get past. I took a bite and left the rest. What a waste of money. Also, misleading happy hour signs. The signs at the restaurant clearly say HH until 8pm but when we sat down and asked our waitress (around 7:30pm), she told us HH had already ended? If you have signs all over the restaurant that say HH til 8pm, grant it or take down the signs. It's extremely misleading and it's also false advertising. There are so many good spots in little Tokyo, I would highly recommend checking those spots out-- even if you pay a bit more. read more

Our grand plans to walk out and find breakfast was defeated by our (my) laziness. Upon learning of a breakfast buffet in the hotel, we decided to just take the elevator down to the 2nd floor. I mean, how bad can it be? And tbh, it wasn't bad at all. They knew their audience so the preponderance of the food was Asian-style breakfast (no complaints here). Their scrambled eggs and yaki-udon sat in the chafing dishes in small portions in case everyone decided to stick to a rice-based breakfast. Spoiler alert: I ate everything. I especially enjoyed eating a metric ton of steamed rice with their curry in a crock pot with some furikake seasoning on top. And the pickles. Yum. So good. (Can't really mess that up.) Other stuff I had: Miso soup, salted grilled salmon, chilled tamagoyaki, bacon. The worst thing I had was probably a dried out half of a hash brown. What I mistook as being extra crispy brown-ness turned out to be dried out yuckiness. To be fair, I think that was the only piece like that. Service was non-existent and my largest issue with this place. When I walked in, the guy at the stand was somewhat surprised to see me?? He asked how I would be paying before he would seat me. I replied with credit card and saw his discomfort so I said I guess I can also charge it to the room which he seemed happier about. He said he would punch up the bill and send it over. So weird. Dishes were never cleared from my spot and there was no other interaction from other staff even when they passed me walking around getting food. I saw a couple reviews bash on the price ($23 as of yesterday) but it is technically $18-$19 I believe with the rest being tax and tip built in. The hot items, tempura, and sushi were satisfactory. My favorite was the ikura sushi (made to order) and the steak! The Toro and salmon sushi came in second place. The orange dessert was interesting - like a wedge of orange peel filled with a jello mixture. The tempura and premade sushi had been sitting out, so they weren't the freshest. I enjoyed the zouni (mochi soup) because I felt it was such an appropriate dish for the New Year! I think I could find a better buffet with good service somewhere else for the price. Tamon Sushi was a last minute decision for New Year's Eve dinner. We had made reservations on Open Table at another restaurant that cancelled on us as we were driving on the way, and as a result, we ended up here instead. The reviews seemed promising, the atmosphere looked cool, and they were able to accommodate our party on such short notice without a wait. Located on the second floor of the Miyako Hotel on first street in Little Tokyo, I have walked past this place countless times. Never did I know there was a sushi restaurant inside. Did we just stumble upon the hidden gem and best kept secret of Little Tokyo? That was our hopes, and it seemed very promising at first. The menus have Japanese writing, the sushi was nigiri-focused with limited simple rolls (as per traditional, authentic sushi), and the atmosphere was upscale. The counter seating in the back offers nice views of 1st Street, and the decor is on point. I started off with a miso soup ($2) and tako wasabi ($8). Both were excellent appetizers to get me started. The tako wasabi was on the mild side. A couple pitchers of beer (~$15) and sake ensued. I originally had my eyes on the large $35 assorted sashimi, but changed my mind and geared towards the nigiri sushi. We ordered blue fin tuna ($9), yellowtail ($7), halibut ($7), red snapper ($8), spanish mackerel ($8), striped jack ($9), scallop ($9), sweet shrimp ($9), and Japanese mackerel (MP). Each order came with 2 pieces. Service was generally good, but a little spotty. A main complaint I have would be that the servers were unable to answer our questions on which fish was which. I knew for the most part, but some confirmation from them would have been nice. They tried to answer, but you could tell they really had no idea, and I even caught them naming one or two of the fish incorrectly. Favorites for me were the tuna, yellowtail, spanish mackerel, scallop, and sweet shrimp. The red snapper was good, but a little bit of a disappointment. The Japanese mackerel was very forgettable. All in all, our meal here was definitely a good experience. I don't think I'd go out of my way to come back, but their seasonal omakase menu and offerings are definitely intriguing and likely what they are known for. Overall, I thought the sushi here was just alright. The rice was decent, and the fish was OK, but all together, the sushi was not especially tasty and memorable. I do have extremely high standards for sushi since recently coming back from Japan, so take this with a grain of salt. This restaurant is worth coming to and checking out. read more

The carrots & green beans on his plate were melt-in-your-mouth and the fries, MMMM.... my mom's Senior Bento was apparently very, very good. She said the grilled saba (mackerel) was delicious. My salmon teriyaki however, not so great. The salmon was a bit overcooked and the sauce was way too salty. For a $30 piece of fish I expected more. My miso soup tasted like it was re-heated too many times (miso soup can take on a distinct too rich n' salty flavor when re-heated more than once & every time you re-heat it, it gets worse, you can't fake it). The waitress took our order and everything seemed good until the first batch of food came out for the first 5 of us and then NOTHING. They didn't check on us for the rest of the dinner or serve us the rest of our dishes. After a bit, we ended up telling our friends that had food to just eat. We actually had to walk to the kitchen area to get help and we told them that we were missing some orders. She showed us the order ticket and then we told them that 3 of us didn't receive the food that we ordered. She informed us that they made a mistake and that they would make it asap. We ended telling them to just cancel it all since our other friends were almost done anyways. What made it even worse was that one of the dishes that didn't come out was for the birthday boy. We ended up just picking at our other friends' dishes since they felt bad for us. Such a big fail since the birthday boy was excited to try this restaurant and he never even got his food. I can say that the lemon sour and highball drinks were good but that's not saying much... I probably wouldn't recommend this restaurant and/or visit again. read more

What we got for the night was memorable service, a delicious dinner, fun times, and a successful birthday celebration. I couldn't have asked for a better location, there's valet parking for $6, easy to find in Miyako Hotel 2nd floor, classy Little Tokyo vibe and clean. The Matsu Nigiri set was a decent price, sushi was fresh and yummy. Tempura, my love, was crisp and fried just right. Also ordered spicy tuna and garlic gyoza but we ate it before I could take a pic. The Senior Bento was amazing, fish was grilled and seasoned perfectly and juicy. Walking up the staircase from the main lobby of the Miyako hotel, Tamon sushi is the resturant just next to a karaoke bar, Ohjah Lounge. We ordered sushi, the silver fish nigiri and 'Ume' Omakase set. We waited about 40 minutes sushi, but from the moment we picked up each piece, we knew it had been well worth the wait. The rice was delicious and seasoned with care. None of the grains stuck to the plate or fell apart when introduced to soy sauce. The fish was wonderful as well, nicely portioned and melt in the mouth good. The price is on the moderate side for the number of nigiri you recieve, but for anyone looking for sushi that is quietly unassuming and authentic, this is it. read more

However I should have stick to my go-to place and not giving Tamon a chance. When I called and asked for portion, they said for 1.5-2 people and please see the photo. There is 1 shrimp, 1 salmon, 1 skewer and tiny amount of side dishes which were not even filled Osechi box. It also comes with chirachi, but again, stingy amount of sushi rice and fish quality wasn't even good. The color of tune fish was so close to brown (I kept them in fridge right away when I get home), I an find better tune at Japanese market and not tuning it's color brown within few hours of pick up. Rice was overly seasoned by vinegar, too sour and rice wasn't cooked well, like a day old hard texture. Yikes Absolutely NOT worth $65, and NOT for sharing. Way too small portion, over priced and poor quality of food. I had to run to get some dishes to fill the Osechi box, avoid this place for your special new year day dish. This is for new year celebration, full of "Good" food and absolutely no space in between food, I guess their standard is very low just being cheap.
