A busy restaurant is not, by itself, evidence of great food. Diners choose a restaurant expecting a consistently satisfying culinary experience, not simply a full dining room. A successful restaurant should be able to maintain the same standard of quality whether it serves twenty guests or two hundred. When consistency begins to suffer because of volume, the dining experience suffers as well. My experience at Morenos reflected exactly that. The seco de chivo was extremely tough and would have benefited from considerably more cooking time. It was also noticeably under-seasoned, leaving the dish lacking the depth of flavor one would expect. The menu descriptions and photographs did not match what was actually served. When this discrepancy was respectfully brought to the manager's attention, rather than listening or trying to resolve the concern, the response was defensive and confrontational. What could have been a simple opportunity to correct a problem became one of the most disappointing parts of the evening. To make matters worse, a 20% gratuity was automatically added to the bill. While restaurants are free to establish their own gratuity policies, they should be communicated clearly and transparently so diners know what to expect before the check arrives. A restaurant's reputation is built not only on its best plate, but on its ability to deliver the same quality, honesty, and hospitality to every customer, every time. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Morenos, and I would encourage prospective diners to consider other options until these issues are addressed. read more

I tried this food as takeout first and I fell in love with the flavors. Then I tried them in person. I recommend the corviche for the rich taste, encebollado, and Tonga manabita! I had no idea this spot was opening up so close to home. I was on my way next door when I stumbled across Moreno and decided to give it a spontaneous try. The interior/atmosphere is beautiful. Union City is starting to boom with Equadorian cuisine but we were in need of something a lil more upscale. Especially on this street. That being said prices are very reasonable, I can always appreciate when a restaurant takes in to consideration the locals and community around them. I ordered a Yapingacho, and a piña colada. I originally thought I'd go for a bolón but I really wanted to try something with their peanut sauce.y dish was really really delicious, and the best equadorian food I've had so far. It came with steak, sausage, rice, and potato patties topped with egg and peanut sauce, and a salad. The steak had a great grilled flavor, the rice was perfect, the potato patties were filled with cheese, and went great with the odd but delicious combo of fried egg and peanut butter. I may ask for the egg to be a cooked a tad more next time just because the yolk was a lil overwhelming to me. The salad was delicious because it came with the limey cilantro mix of veggies they use in their ceviche. Portion sizes are huge. This plate also came with plantains, they forgot to add them to the plate but were kind enough to give them to me to go with my leftover once I noticed. The only thing I did not like was the piña colada, it was just too watery and not creamy enough for my taste. I can't wait to come back and try other items off the menu. I'm a fan of Ecuadorian food but am rarely in an area that has much of it. So we made a trek up to Union City while in New Jersey and had a fantastic meal. I've been to Ecuador a few times, and this place definitely does Ecuadorian food justice. The menu is heavier on coastal dishes than other regions. Between the two of us, we had empanadas de verde, ceviches de camaron, and bollo de pescado. I also added a guanabana juice with water (not milk). Everything was incredibly good. The empanadas de verde were nicely crispy, and the house aji went perfectly with them. The ceviche was legit Ecuadorian (vs. Peruvian that is more commonly found), with giant shrimp and plantain chips & rice on the side, along with limes and tostado aside the aji. The tostado was under-salted and didn't seem super fresh, and it would have been nice to have the traditional popcorn to go with the ceviche, but it was excellent nonetheless. The bollo de pescado was the unexpected star of the meal, new to both of us but amazingly delicious. And huge! We came away with a nice amount of leftovers to enjoy the next day. And last, but not least, was the guanabana juice, perfectly refreshing and not too sweet, going great with the meal. We really enjoyed the ambiance, with Ecuadorian music and a volume where you could enjoy it but still have a conversation, and classy decor. The space is small, so expect a wait, but ours was only ~20 minutes for the two of us on a Sunday afternoon. Prices are on the higher side, but the quality is also high, so I think it's worth it. I hope to go back for another legit, delicious Ecuadorian meal. read more

I give this place a 4 out of 5 because there was good portions, the food came out fresh and fast, the interior is so cute and they played good music. I deduct a point because there was no host stand and I felt like the service was just fine. The empanadas de verde were crispy but a bit oily. The yapingachos were a bit dry in my opinion but everything else on the plate was stellar. I would go back for more Maduros and carne asada. Also the guanabana was sooo refreshing. I preface this review by saying I am Ecuadorian. I know Ecuadorian food well but it sounds like most people are just discovering it. The food, ambiance, and service at Moreno's were top notch. The place is thoughtfully decorated. The staff is welcoming and don traditional Panama hats (they are original to Ecuador). We ordered a Bolon w/ pork bits to start (mashed, fried plantain ball with cheese). My partner ordered a Chaulafan Mixto (Ecuadorian fried rice with steak, chicken, and shrimp.) I had the Llapingacho which is a traditional dish that comes with potato pancakes, rice, eggs, chorizo, steak, salad, sweet plantains and a tasty peanut sauce. If this sounds like a lot, it is! The portions are huge. We had plenty of leftovers to take home. These are all meant to share. I also had a fresh passion fruit shake. Refreshingly tart! There was a gentleman beautifully playing the saxophone which was a nice touch! They currently do not take reservations but the place is always packed! I came here on a Saturday for lunch and I did not like the food. I came for caldo de salchicha and bollo de pescado. First I had to wait for a table. It was unorganized because we were told there were no tables. Then we saw that outside there was no order. That's when I sat down at a table outside. We were told there were no tables inside available but we saw other people being seated. Then when we ordered the food that was also a delay. So we had one waiter and he was great but it was too many tables for him to handle. I had to go inside to ask for silverware. Then we had the appetizer but no sauce for it. Other tables revived the corn with the sauces but we didn't due to the staff being overwhelmed. So we ordered the empanada de platano con queso y Corviche. First the empanada was really good and I recommend it. I have never had Corviche before so I have nothing to compare it to. I liked it very much and would definitely order it again. The main course was caldo de salchica and chulaflan. The caldo was not very good; it was missing some stuff in it and it was not hot. Also there was a spice which it had too much of. I have definitely had better caldo de salchica. Then my niece ordered the chaulafan which was salty and not made like I have had it. The shrimp was not in the rice; it was on the side of it. So for reference my mother is from the coast and that is usually the type of food I eat. To pay the bill we waited another 30 minutes. So the staff is very nice but they are not equipped to handle the amount of people being waited on. Then the food was not very good in my opinion. Now it could have been an off day because there were alot of people or it could be my palate. So no I would not go back because I live far and I did not like the experience enough to repeat it. read more

UPDATE: Went back and tried the encebollado (fish stew or otherwise known as the national hangover soup), the salchicha seca (blood sausage), lunch special of caldo de bola (beef, plantain and peanut soup) accompanied by grilled chicken breast with rice and red beans. The encebollado in this case lacked flavor and onions and cilantro, possibly aji peruano. It tasted like a basic fish stew with yucca. It was loaded with fish, this is a plus. I took it home and added a fresh handful of cilantro and red onions and it was better. I would give it a 3.5, I have def had better! The blood sausage was delicious and the portion was huge, a bit pricey coming in at almost 20 bucks! I would give it 4 stars. Caldo de bola was delicious not to thick and not too much peanut sauce, could have used a bit more meat but overall I give it 4.5 stars. The grilled chicken was soo tender very well cooked and flavorful, rice was good and red beans though a tad salty again, delicious. For the lunch special of 15 bucks I would give it 4.5 stars. Parking is a nightmare and they take a long time (about 1.5 hours) to seat you. Bring a jacket because you'll be waiting over an hour outside. I am Ecuadorian but born here, but I have lived in Ecuador and I have to say, this restaurant as far as the food really meets the traditional standards I've experienced in the homeland. Everything on the menu looks amazing, so far I've had the llapingacho, churrasco Ecuadoriana, bolón the chicharón and their empanadas and they were top shelf. Proportion wise they serve alot.. well a lot for me personally, I definitely took food home. It's pricey BUT you're paying for authenticity and a lot of ingredients to certain dishes are imported. If you're new to Ecuadorian food you can't go wrong with any seafood, just read the ingredients carefully, a lot of Ecuadorian dishes are accompanied by peanut sauce. Try the jugo the naranjilla it's a juice made from a fruit similar to an orange but smaller only found in the Ecuadorian Colombian Peruvian region of South America, it's delicious. It's a fancier than the typical Ecuadorian restaurant from around the area. It's not too hard to find parking but they also offer valet service.
