This bakery is located on the very cute historic downtown Main Street of Half Moon Bay. While it has a great location, the food and beverages have been very hit or miss, and I've stopped in a very decent amount. The good: We have special ordered their fruit cheesecake at least 5+ times for birthdays, and it doesn't disappoint. The raspberry half moon cookies were a tender shortbread texture and yummy filling, and I would purchase again. The disappointing: The fruit tart, however, was almost no custard and instead just a thick layer of frangipane which detracted from the freshness of the dessert. The crust was bland--tasted like eating straight flour, no butteriness or anything. Italian sodas are all ice, then commercial syrups at a too sweet ratio. Peanut butter cookies and butter cookies lacked flavor but were okay. The terrible: Why I finally wrote a review: Moonside has a stack of chocolate chip cookies in one of their pastry cases. They look beautiful! Packed with chocolate chips, golden and glistening like the perfect chewy, slightly underbaked cookie. We bought two! And they were the WORST chocolate chip cookies I have ever encountered. I ended up spitting out my second bite and just throwing them away--not even dipping them in coffee or tea could salvage the experience. I don't know WHY they look shiny and doughy--maybe an egg wash, though why would you egg wash cookies????--but they are dry as a bone. Not crispy, not crunchy--horribly textured, DRY. There's no butteriness, no hint of salt, no carmelization from brown sugar, nothing to give this cookie flavor in the least except the chocolate. And the chocolate was horrible--bitter and waxy, dried out and cheap tasting. A chips ahoy cookie would have been better. I don't know if I'll ever buy another cookie here--this was rough. read more

What can I say about great staff, fantastic friendly service and some of the most incredible gluten free cookies ever? We got there a few minutes after they closed and apparently we looked pitiful and disappointed. There was no "well we are closed" it was only "what can we do for you?" It's a sweet cafe with a full coffee menu ( yes, they did draw the line there with not preening us up a cup, but that was fine). My husband & I visited on a Saturday morning and the line was out the door but the wait wasn't bad (less than 10 minutes). We ordered danishes, a breakfast sandwich and a coffee. Delicious pastries & the vanilla latte was perfect. The breakfast sandwich was a let down. It was basic and it took 20 minutes to come out. We stayed at the mill rose house and as a perk we got free breakfast for two at this restaurant each day. We ate here twice, both meals were spectacular, outdoor seating on sunny mornings is lovely. I was able to go to this bakery in half one day and get some sweet treats. I got the lemon tart and Edna cookies. The tart was cooked perfectly and had great Keylime flavor. My only suggestion is that I would love the crust to be a little bit thinner and more filling added. The Edna cookies tasted like fall pumpkin spice cookies with a maple glaze on top and raisins and almond stirred in. They do have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to sweet desserts. We came here because our "Bed and Breakfast" included breakfast, but at Moonside giving us a voucher to pick out what we wanted. Worked out fine and we got the Brioche French Toast loaded with strawberries, and the Veggie Scramble. The Veggie Scramble had mushrooms, zucchs, bell peppers, green onions and cheddar, and was softly done per our request. The Brioche French Toast included thick slices of brioche bread lightly dipped and sprinkled with powdered sugar and plenty of chopped strawberries in a light sauce. There's extra space to dine in near the indoor courtyard toward the stage, which is great on quiet mornings but could be busy during holiday afternoons. A staple to the downtown HMB crowd. read more

I ordered breakfast, arriving just before a rush with a large group. I waited for 30 minutes, watching the large group being served and still waiting. I finally went up to the counter and they seemed to have no record of my order. They said they'd get it right out to me. 15 minutes went by, then 20. For an almost $25 breakfast for one, this was unacceptable. I always tip, even for counter service, and unfortunately I gave a generous tip before sitting down. We serendipitously found this spot walking on Main Street. The ambiance is bright, airy, and immediately welcoming. The young woman taking our order was especially great, demonstrating exceptional patience as I struggled to decide what to get. We finally settled on the artichoke pesto flatbread and their massive cinnamon crisps. Stopped in here on New Year's Day, only because our favorite bakery down the street wasn't open. The prices here are really high and the quality just isn't there (especially for those prices!). Anytime I'm anywhere near to Half Moon Bay I make a B-line to Moonside Bakery and Cafe for baked goods. I'm filled with nostalgia in particular for their giant cinnamon sugar baked Elephant Ear cookies, which taste like a palmier but are about 5x as big, and much sweeter, and deliciously buttery and packed with cinnamon. The baked goods here are fresh and very traditional. The elephant ear is a difficult baked item to come across, because although American Grandma's used to make these, they are not made much anymore. Turns out there are a lot of steps in making a baked elephant ear, so it's difficult to find and difficult to find one done well. The one here at Moonside is a stand out. read more

No visit to Half Moon Bay is complete without a stop at Moonside! This has been my family's go to bakery in HMB for as long as I can remember. Not only do they have pastries and breads, but they also make pizzas! The pizza is quite delicious and is enough for two people. We always get the Margherita pizza and are satisfied each and every time. For the pastries, my go to is the pumpkin bread and the eclairs. I don't typically like eclairs but theirs has both chocolate and regular cream on the inside making it very rich and flavorful. The pumpkin bread is always extremely moist and tastes like real pumpkin, not an artificial flavor that you can often get in pumpkin baked goods. They sell it by the slice or as a little loaf, as is the case with most of their loaf breads. This last time I went we got a loaf of sourdough for the first time and it was great! It seems like a lot of sourdoughs lack much of that sour flavor, but not this one! This tasted exactly how a sourdough from California should taste. Even when the line is long it seems to go fairly fast. Coffee comes up quickly. Pizza doesn't come up too fast, but hey, at least you know it's fresh and made to order! read more
