Hammer and nails; Oh, and by the way good coffee too! Driving up or down Cabrillo highway you can still stumble on cool places that you would not hear about otherwise. El Granada Hardware & Cafe was one of those examples for me. We were driving south towards Santa Cruz when my eyelids started getting very heavy and caffeine became an immediate necessity. A quick search on my phone, after I had pulled over and stopped, suggested that there was good coffee at a hardware store near me! Skeptically I plotted in the address and got back on the road. El Granada Hardware & Cafe is a hardware store, there is no mistaking that, but they also have a surprisingly wide selection of coffee beans. We tried two flavors, One was their dark roast which was very good (my favorite) and a raspberry and something else flavored choice that was surprisingly good too. The coffees are handmade, which makes a world of difference. We did not need a hammer or nails, so we sat out front, sipped our coffee and enjoyed the pleasant weather before getting back on Cabrillo highway heading towards Santa Cruz.

    Friendly service.

Rarely have I been so underwhelmed as when consuming a sandwich made at El Granada Hardware & Cafe. With all of the great reviews I was looking to have an excellent sandwich made at a local place. Granted it is a hardware store. But when you have been to as many places in the stick as I have with surprisingly good experiences at unusual locations, well, you just come to expect that greatness can be found anywhere. Unfortunately greatness is not found in an El Granada Hardware & Cafe sandwich. Not the worst I have ever had but certainly not exciting either. My creation was the Dutch Crunch bread with salami, pastrami, cheddar, swiss, veggies, mayo, and mustard. The bread the most exciting thing about the sandwich and it was average at best. The meats we simply bland. The taste, texture, and quality of made me think that someone was trying to go cheap while still asking for a better price. The cheeses both were something that also made me think of cheap quality. The veggies were fresh and good. Mustard and mayo were okay. But I have to say I they overall creation was about as exciting as a sandwich made at a grade school. Martinelli's apple juice washed it all down and was good. The small latte they made was good. The courtyard to eat your food in was cute Their hardware selection seemed about right for the community. They also stuffed a lot of other things besides hardware in the place. Almost int he style of a general store. Would I go back to El Granada Hardware & Cafe? Not for their disappointing sandwich! But maybe for some hardware or a coffee in the future.

My friends and I were on a drive down hwy 1 on a Sunday morning. It was foggy coming out of the tunnel at devil's slide but it was very sunny when we arrived down at El Granada. We stopped in for a bite to eat and were greeted by very friendly staff. The store has everything. Hardware, candy, sandwiches, ice cream, coffee, cold beverages, newspapers, lotto and more. The pastrami sandwich I had on sourdough was very good and so was the clam chowder. The kids enjoyed their delicious ice cream. There is a patio area on the side and a few tables in front of the store where we ate our food. Parking was easy and the post office is across the street. Easy access from highway 1. Highly recommend this one stop shop.

If you're in this area you should stop by for the coffee and sandwiches etc... theres a variety of snacks to choose from when you need those snacks for the beach. Great customer service patio seating is a plus!

Pano shot of the whole interior.

I absolutely love the fact that it's a hardware store and cafe. So adorable. The food is mediocre, the coffee is great. Unfortunately the staff is less than friendly. I was in town for 4 days and ate there every single day, I don't think I saw a single person smile in there, was kind of depressing. Lucky for them, it's super convenient.

Surf. Bacon. Egg. Fog busting coffee. 50 feet away.

With my iPhone in hand, I began furiously checking the price points per store for the products I wanted purchasing which is my reason purchasing from Hassett Hardware. Moreover, Hassett's customer service is TOP NOTCH; all Sales Department Employees knows EXACTLY where the products I want purchasing locations are within the store AND I don't have to HUNT searching for help either. Finally, upon ready paying for the two items, one of the Sales Department Employees inquired whether I had an Ace Hardware card for reducing the price for the products I'm purchasing: I didn't possess an Ace Hardware Card so, the Sales Department Employee signed me as an Ace Hardware Member which ultimately, I save more money purchasing the high ticket items! As Arnold S. stated, "I'll BE BACK!" Lol!

The space is manageable, the selection appears thoughtfully organized, and the overall experience is far less overwhelming than walking through a massive warehouse. For a neighborhood hardware store, it offers an impressive sense of practicality and convenience. What truly distinguished my visit, however, was the customer service. A young associate helped me search for the specific screws I needed and showed genuine patience throughout the process. Rather than simply pointing me toward an aisle, he took the time to assist me directly and made every reasonable effort to locate the correct item. His willingness to help turned what could have been a frustrating search into a pleasant and productive visit. That combination of attentive service, a well-considered selection, and an easy-to-navigate environment makes this store especially valuable. Bigger does not always mean better, and this is an excellent example of a smaller business delivering a more personal and satisfying shopping experience. It has definitely earned its place as my go-to hardware store in San Mateo.

I walked to the key counter, and stood behind a man that had been waiting for someone to help him. I asked him how long he'd been waiting, and he said it had been ~5 min since he asked for help. I walked back to the center cashier, who said there was now no one on the floor to help as everyone was on lunch break. I asked for the manager, and he said he was on a break. There were now three people waiting to get keys copied, and no staff to help. After waiting a few more minutes, I walked back to the center of the store and spoke loud enough so that the manager could hear in the back. The message? That customers needed help at the key counter. Finally, a staff person came to the counter, clearly annoyed, and said they were having problems with their staff-to-staff communication device. Unlikely. What they were having a problem with, was a clear misunderstanding of what customer service means. Talk about a failure to train employees. Never coming back, nor recommending this business to my friends or family. There are better businesses nearby, ones that actually understand the importance of customer service ... and they're just a short drive away.

I've spent THOUSANDS of dollars here over TWENTY PLUS YEARS! I'm a "member " here. Basically they track my spending habits with my phone number. (I guess. Because I've seen no benefit to me from it ). Anyways that ends here and now. I've never been made to feel more unwelcome or unappreciated than I was 45 minutes ago. I work hard. I started my day at 5 am. Midday my trusty Carhartt jacket tore and I spent the rest of my 13.5 hour work day with cold drafts and a plan to come here for a new one. This is after all the same place I'd bought all my other high priced Carhartt gear. Put yourself in my shoes. 5 am start. Off at 6:30pm with a torn jacket. A feeble lunch of whatever it was I had and enough coffee to get me through. Race to the Outdoor supply and walk in the door to be "Greeted" by "You have one minute to shop!' We close at 7!!" (Mutters to coworker. Loud enough for me to hear "I know I know I shoulda locked it !" ). But I look at my watch it's 6:58. So apparently you don't "close at 7" you close a little before that. I'm followed by 2 men that are acting like children telling me "we close soon ! We close soon ! He's closing the register !!" In the MOST WHINY AND PATHETIC way I've ever heard. As I say. "I know I know I was already told. But I NEED A JACKET!" I'm followed to the jackets then I'm told again. "We close soon he's closing the register !!" (Look at my watch. It's 6:59) I find my jacket. It seems to have increased in price nearly double what I remember having paid previously but I'm literally so uncomfortable because I have two grown men and a teenager pacing and acting like they'll all be punished or something terrible will happen in the next 12 seconds. So I quickly find my size jacket. Only to discover that it's literally CHAINED UP!! With a steel cable and padlock ! In MILLBRAE. Not a third world country. Millbrae. Let me be clear. They've chained up the jackets and you can't even try them on!! Then as the three employees pacing around me figure out that they can't annoy me away. They begin to frantically try to unchain my $150 windbreaker while conversing loudly how inconvenient I am and how "he's closing the register !!" (Question ? Does ... like ?? I dunno. A BOMB GO OFF? Does like little Timmy lose a thumb if the register closes at 7:01? ) Cuz by 7:03 as I walk ran to the register in time to see another man shooed out the door with the entire rest of the store staff pacing by the door as If they all need a wee wee and the potty is closed .. the cashier is hurriedly ripping the cash drawer out of the register and trying to leave. Making me wonder what woulda happened if he left my sight ?? Would I have been told in that same whiny tone "sorry. We told you. He. Closed the register .." Seeing me ; his shoulders slump , he turns to the cash drawer and shoves it closed and BEFORE I can even ask "what's the easiest way I can pay and get out of this awkward mess?" He says "card only we're closing ". (Ok. I get that. It's literally all I've heard In the 4 minutes I've been here. ) I (for some reason) give my phone number even tho I already am seething and also oddly feeling guilty like I've somehow ruined 6-7 people's night by being their last customer. I pay and I'm followed out by 2 people. Only hearing my first friendly "thank you " as I walk out. Thinking to myself it felt like "thank you for FINALLY LEAVING !" It was 7:05pm So. I'll say online. Publicly for all to read what I said to her. "I'm sorry I came in .." I mean it. And when I say "I'm sorry. " the man I am means that it won't happen again. So don't worry Outdoor Supply. I won't bother you all again ever with my patronage. I'm sorry.

Since the 2019 lockdowns the current manager seems to be hell-bent on making it the most miserable place to shop on Earth. All the cashiers are gone. Now there are just an array of self checkout kiosks and at least 8 of them are closed at all times just to make sure that you still have to stand in a ridiculous line while some old woman looks over your shoulder to upsell you on a rewards membership. Item doesn't scan? Welp. You'll just get to stand there for half an hour while somebody figures out what to do about it. Need to push a large cart full of drainage pipes to one of those three open self-checkout kiosks? Well surprise, idiot. Mr. Manager Man has decided to put giant display racks in the middle of every aisle making that completely impossible under the best of circumstances. 99% of the time there will also be a waddling gaggle of morbidly obese people obstructing whatever's left of the aisle because they want to look at the moose scented candles or whatever stupid bullshit they're carrying for no apparent reason. Need to find a particular electrical or plumbing fitting? Too bad. Every single box has had its contents thoroughly shuffled with every other box in the store so there's absolutely no chance the fitting you need is anywhere near where it's supposed to be. Asking anyone where they put them just gets you a stoned "Uh, like... What?" from the random idiot wandering around. Entire aisles will be cordoned off for the entire day because someone eventually plans on restocking something. They're not stocking it now and they won't be stocking it in the next hour but it's closed. If you dare walk down it anyway a pimply kid will yell at you and that's like really threatening or something. Just in case you haven't been run off yet, there's also an obnoxiously beeping inventory robot ramming into you from behind and a scam artist from some solar incentive sales ponzi scheme following up shortly thereafter. He got his job on the TikTok. Given what an unbelievable hassle it is just to set foot in this place, you might think that you'll be clever and order whatever you need on their website so they have to go burrowing through their own randomized inventory piles but you'll be screwed there, too, because the website automatically reloads itself at least a dozen times so the search field clears itself out and is absolutely worthless. The actual order pickup process is also every bit as time consuming as it involves a stoner doofus reading numbers on a tag to find your order. The manager needs to be removed so things can get back to their usual degree of mediocrity.

So I've been wandering around in the store to browse for random things to connect to this piece of wood and hope it's safe enough for a toddler to play with it. The variety of "stuff" they have is impressive so it took me a while to get a good overview. The friendly staff kept asking me if I need help, but I declined saying "I'm just browsing". I'm sure they thought I wasn't going to buy anything and might even steal a thing. After being asked for the fifth time I gave in and explained what I was building. The guy helped me find a couple of things and even came to me later with a suggestion (battery powered light with a switch). Service here is severely lacking - I was trying to make a return and the man at the front was straight rude about it. They dont accept returns outside of the three franchises stores owned by that specific owner. That is ok, but this wasn't explained well and when I asked further, they rolled their eyes and said "like I already said, I can't help you - this isn't Fremont ".. uhm. ok. Still 3 stars cuz it would probably be clutch when you need something last minute, but dont expect any kindness here.
