I've been coming to this building for my hardware needs for over 20 years. Regardless of the name on the wall I've come here because I wanted to support local millbrae business. I've spent THOUSANDS of dollars here over TWENTY PLUS YEARS! I'm a "member " here. Basically they track my spending habits with my phone number. (I guess. Because I've seen no benefit to me from it ). Anyways that ends here and now. I've never been made to feel more unwelcome or unappreciated than I was 45 minutes ago. I work hard. I started my day at 5 am. Midday my trusty Carhartt jacket tore and I spent the rest of my 13.5 hour work day with cold drafts and a plan to come here for a new one. This is after all the same place I'd bought all my other high priced Carhartt gear. Put yourself in my shoes. 5 am start. Off at 6:30pm with a torn jacket. A feeble lunch of whatever it was I had and enough coffee to get me through. Race to the Outdoor supply and walk in the door to be "Greeted" by "You have one minute to shop!' We close at 7!!" (Mutters to coworker. Loud enough for me to hear "I know I know I shoulda locked it !" ). But I look at my watch it's 6:58. So apparently you don't "close at 7" you close a little before that. I'm followed by 2 men that are acting like children telling me "we close soon ! We close soon ! He's closing the register !!" In the MOST WHINY AND PATHETIC way I've ever heard. As I say. "I know I know I was already told. But I NEED A JACKET!" I'm followed to the jackets then I'm told again. "We close soon he's closing the register !!" (Look at my watch. It's 6:59) I find my jacket. It seems to have increased in price nearly double what I remember having paid previously but I'm literally so uncomfortable because I have two grown men and a teenager pacing and acting like they'll all be punished or something terrible will happen in the next 12 seconds. So I quickly find my size jacket. Only to discover that it's literally CHAINED UP!! With a steel cable and padlock ! In MILLBRAE. Not a third world country. Millbrae. Let me be clear. They've chained up the jackets and you can't even try them on!! Then as the three employees pacing around me figure out that they can't annoy me away. They begin to frantically try to unchain my $150 windbreaker while conversing loudly how inconvenient I am and how "he's closing the register !!" (Question ? Does ... like ?? I dunno. A BOMB GO OFF? Does like little Timmy lose a thumb if the register closes at 7:01? ) Cuz by 7:03 as I walk ran to the register in time to see another man shooed out the door with the entire rest of the store staff pacing by the door as If they all need a wee wee and the potty is closed .. the cashier is hurriedly ripping the cash drawer out of the register and trying to leave. Making me wonder what woulda happened if he left my sight ?? Would I have been told in that same whiny tone "sorry. We told you. He. Closed the register .." Seeing me ; his shoulders slump , he turns to the cash drawer and shoves it closed and BEFORE I can even ask "what's the easiest way I can pay and get out of this awkward mess?" He says "card only we're closing ". (Ok. I get that. It's literally all I've heard In the 4 minutes I've been here. ) I (for some reason) give my phone number even tho I already am seething and also oddly feeling guilty like I've somehow ruined 6-7 people's night by being their last customer. I pay and I'm followed out by 2 people. Only hearing my first friendly "thank you " as I walk out. Thinking to myself it felt like "thank you for FINALLY LEAVING !" It was 7:05pm So. I'll say online. Publicly for all to read what I said to her. "I'm sorry I came in .." I mean it. And when I say "I'm sorry. " the man I am means that it won't happen again. So don't worry Outdoor Supply. Was in search of a metal 33" inch tomato basket for a plant that we had grown inside but now needed to be planted outdoors in our yard. Initially I was going to go to a local Ace Hardware but soon learned many locations did not have it in stock. As it happened, I was in the area and stopped by OS in Millbrae where they had several baskets of which I selected the 42" which was actually the size that I really needed. Customer service is amazing and they host so many great neighborhood events. Recently came out for their spring planting event with free BBQ. The free BBQ was really a piece of hot dog (they ran out of buns by noon) but I love how the company is giving back to the community unlike other big box stores by doing these events every month or two. They invited local organizations to come and table and I learned about some local chapters I never knew about. Their product selection is decent and the price can be cheaper or more expensive than other big box stores, but the customer service here is 100% better than Lowe's or Home Depot. This location has the best customer service of any OSH I ever went to. They strive on providing the best customer service and make sure that their customers are taken care of. From the greeting at the door or checkstand to the service at the key center, I give this store a ten out of ten. Not as good as the old OSH, but still nice to have this store when homedepot and lowes is too far and Ace Hardware is too small. Some of the items are a bit better quality than big box but home depot online is catching up. Service is no better than homedepot and in some cases even worse. They seem to staff it with retirees that get flustered easily and not knowledgeable in the dept. they work. It is clear they have no vested interest in whether they make a sale or not. Often times they will tell you they don't have something when they actually do because they don't know and too lazy to go look or ask someone else. The greeting when you get in the store is very robotic. It's like they are forced to do it but really don't mean it and hope you don't ask a question. I don't understand why it is so dark in the store. It is very hard to read the labels when you're buying stuff. The plant selection is ok but not as good as before. Impossible to find any help. Corporate must not care either. They do not publish and email address. The phone number listed on their website is disconnected. Their CEO makes his Linkedin profile private. It's great that they found another hardware store to take over what used to be orchard supply. I came here for my home repair needs and I find that it's less stress than going to a huge hardware store like Home Depot. Especially if I need something small like some screws or bolts to fix a cabinet or something broken or pick up some tools. It sure beats waiting in those long lines at Home Depot and there's plenty of parking here. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! Went to purchase 4 bags of orchid bark and a heavy umbrella base and was received with poor customer service. My 70-year old mother was asking for assistance and DOMINIC refused to help bring the heavy merchandise to the car, nor did he try to call another associate to help. WHAT A DICK!!! He was very rude and curt. It was a very upsetting trip to OSH. Maybe they're all disgruntled workers? Something is definitely wrong there. The cashier lady with the white hair was also not very helpful in finding the QR codes for the orchid bark in the book to ring us up, nor did she know how to ask an associate to obtain the code from outside to assist. Newly opened! Lots of parking, brightly lit with wide and tidy aisles, easy to see/read labels, unlike Lowe's (more cluttered/dark and parking more annoying) or Home Depot (similar issues). Prices seem a tick higher than the other two, but the weekly specials and rewards program helps balance it out. I was most impressed by their bird feeder/food section. It's the biggest I've ever seen in a hardware store, with a TON more variety and brands than I've ever seen! Walk around the garden center and get some inspiration for your spring and summer planting. Another quick and pleasant experience. You got to hit this place up. It beats going to Lowe's or Home Depot, because the sales persons will not run away from you, but run to you. Every time I've gone in there someone has been there to either greet me or ask me if I need help. Today I replaced the kitchen sink drain. I went in to buy one thing and got into line at a register. The cashier looked at me and decided she would close after the man ahead of me. Who does that? You close after the last person in line. That's being courteous to your customer. What was the first priority? A break? End of shift? You just don't do that. Instead she sent me to another register, at which a second cashier was closing for a break. Nope. Not going look for a third cashier and not going come back. Staff is super nice. I dropped my wallet and the manager came and found me. I can't say enough about how honesty goes a long ways. I am a fan! I went to the nursery and they have a small selection of nice plants. They also have a lot of nice pots. They have a dedicated drought tolerant selection, fruit trees, ornamentals and shrubs. They have good soil material also. It's a cross between a super dedicated Nusery and a big box retail. OSH has been there for years but this version is much nicer with good merchandise and pricing. read more

Its eerie - just eerie how similar this store feels to the old OSH that was here. It's as if they locked the doors and and opened them 2 years later untouched. Yet something feels slightly nicer about this place. Its neat, clean, well stocked, well organized and a welcome change from Home Depot's drafty, impersonal cargo warehouse. Some areas have been changed around, but the general location of things is fairly similar to the old OSH. Its more than obvious they're trying to replicate the look and feel of the old OSH - right down to loyalty program - and that's great because like me, a lot of people probably miss the old OSH. I ended up buying a few small items and the cashier couldn't have been nicer. I'd like to name the cashier as he was so nice - but neither his name nor the phone number of the location appears on the receipt - so hopefully that will change in the future. read more

I just got home from the Millbrae store. I live in South San Francisco. My trip was to have two screens re-screened and to purchase a few other items. I went to the rear work-bench area and waited for approx. five minutes. No one showed up so I went to the front of the store and spoke to a guy who looked like he was the manager. He said that he would send someone back to assist me. I waited another fifteen minutes and no one showed up to assist me. I told the manager looking guy that I was leaving and would come back when "someone is working around here". He said, "i'm sorry" and let me walk out of the store with my screens. I really missed the old OSH in Millbrae. Yesterday, I discovered Outdoor Supply Hardware in its place, so I stopped by. I needed garage door lubricant. Now quickly, tell on which aisle of Home Depot that would be? Good luck. When I came to the door at the new OSH, a friendly gentleman asked if he could help. I asked where I would find garage door lubricant, he told me with great detail, and he was right! Looking around the store while I was there, there's all the same inventory as the old OSH. Very happy that the new OSH (now Outdoor Supply Hardware) is back in Millbrae! While no store is perfect, I noticed that all their employees do their best to ensure their customers are valued and important. Not an easy feat in today's environment. Here's a recent example: Today I received my delivery of outdoor dining room set and Weber S-435 grill. When the delivery team of Tyler and Raphael arrived, I asked them if they could place the products in my backyard rather than typical front door delivery. Without hesitation, they said yes (keep in mind that the location was about 20 yards from the front...so a little distance. After they placed my outdoor dining on my 2nd level patio, they proceeded to unwrap the plastic wrap from my grill. I asked them if they could test the grill to make sure it works. They said no problem. Unfortunately, the side burner was not igniting, but they were not deterred. To make a long story short, they spent over 20 minutes trying to trouble shoot (taking apart partial components, reading the manual and discovered that Weber did not properly connect the wiring. They connected and the side burner worked fine!! How many big box delivery people would spend the time trying to trouble shoot a grill? Thank you Tyler and Raphael for your excellent service. I also want to give a shout out to the Store Manager Kusmana Ali and Assistant Store Manager Francisco Fernandez as well for donating another gas grill for my community service organization for our recent fundraiser. Awesome replacement for what used to be another "OSH," Orchard Supply Hardware--not sure if it's the same owners or same chain and another name, but this shop is just as terrific, if not better than its predecessor. Spacious, clean, and full of everything you'd expect from a large scale hardware store--and as if that was not enough, they have a remarkable nursery outside, with colorful planters of all sizes and vibrant colors, all different manners of plants. The customer service is fantastic, e.g. we went in on a night weekday just before closing, literally ten minutes, and we were ushered in, a super sweet woman helped us buy the gardening twine we needed in two different colors and thickness. This is such an awesome store to have in our backyard. Parking is in front of the store with its own lot, free and convenient. read more

I love the idea of a hardware store in Millbrae but we have a lot of older homes in this town and I find myself constantly going back to the big box home improvement stores or A*# to find home repair items. Outdoor seems to be geared more toward the upgrades rather than the maintain and with that the price point for the items they do have are higher, with that I've had a couple of experiences that don't reflect great customer service. At the check out you're standing in line to pay them for your goods and they answer the phone and make you wait, wasn't I there before the phone call? This has happened on more than one occasion as well a several times while in line, there are other associates in the store not helping customers but they don't answer the phone, why not? Customer service, the face to face interaction in the most important in any retail environment, phone calls, emails and texts are secondary, if management or corporate feel these are of a higher priority then they should have dedicated staff for that. read more
