My wife and I had dinner at Moonlight because of good reviews and close proximity to our hotel. Service was good but we were unimpressed by the food. We started with the fried calamari which was of the quality of a fish and chips restaurant in the US and was quite salty with no other seasoning; VERY overpriced for the quality. My wife had the Gnocchi alla sorrentina which was fine but nothing special; sauce was bland. I had the Lasagna Pasticciata which had a fairly small helping, was a bit burnt around the edges and lacked sauce; flavor was nothing special. We've had way better of all these dishes and will not be returning. read more

After a month eating our way across Italy, Moonlight stands out in our top three. A warm welcome from Umberto, a calm and shaded dining area, and an introductory glass of red ginger cocktail, and we knew this was someplace special. The Bronzino was so fresh it may have thought it was still swimming- perfectly cooked, prepped at table, absolutely a 10. An earlier plate of tempura style shrimp and veg was also excellent: crisp and light, with the freshest shrimp ever, plump, bouncy and juicy. Do not miss the Chef's choice dessert, a lemon tiramisu that will make you tear up your return ticket. Lovely wines, house made bread, seafood lover's delight. Moonlight, a dream of a restaurant! Sant'Agnello is a short walk or one tram stop (toward Napoli) from Big Sorrento, and so very worth the tiny effort. One of the best meals we've had in Italy! This family-run restaurant served up incredible food and warm hospitality. The mother and daughter took care of us with such kindness, the son made our drinks behind the bar, and the father cooked everything to perfection in the kitchen. The front of the restaurant is lined with lemon trees and fresh herb plants overflowing from a terracotta border wall. Absolutely special! We started with a tagliere of local salumi and cheeses and a classic insalata caprese, followed by trofie del bosco and gnocchi alla sorrentina -- both bursting with flavour (side note -- possibly the best tomato i've ever had) Our main, the filetto di pesce alla brace, was perfectly grilled and full of smoky, fresh taste. The welcoming and attentive Ristorante Moonlight was a lovely experience. Our nearby hotel recommended it and we'd read glowing reviews, but still were pleasantly surprised by the artful plating, generous servings, and delicious offerings. The Gamberoni in Tempura arrived piping hot and the fried zucchini and green pepper paired nicely. The wonderful Risotto alla Pescatora had clams, mussels, fish and shrimp, and sat atop a bed of risotto infused with a delicate seafood stock and prepared perfectly al dente. The Spaghetti alla Nerano, a savory harmony of spaghetti, fried zucchini and provolone cheese, was rich and satisfying. We finished with a clean and refreshing salad of cherry tomatoes and rucola. To cap off our meal, our affable waiter Alex brought us house made limoncello, the best I've ever had. My boyfriend and I came here on the last night of our trip to Italy and pretty much only chose because it was close to our hotel. We'd seen some good reviews for it on another review site so made a reservation. One of the things we had read about this place is the in-house cat. A CAT!! I love cats! (#crazycatlady) Anyway, I figured we wouldn't even see this cat but it kept visiting our table and seemed to love my boyfriend! The cat was sweet and pretty friendly :) Seeing as it's a food establishment, I should really review the food too! By this point of the trip I had eaten so much pizza, pasta and seafood I was getting a bit bored and was craving a salad so much! I went for the octopus salad which was actually pretty darned good and a very generous portion size too! For the main I got their Spaghetti alla Pescatora and my boyfriend got the Gnocchi alla Sorrentina. Both were delicious! The gnocchi was actually a pinky red colour and the sauce it came with was so good! As it was our last night we thought we'd go all out and get a dessert each too! I got the profiteroles which were drowned in chocolate sauce, so much so that you couldn't see any of the choux pastry (not that you can ever have too much chocolate sauce!). The boy got lemon sorbet which was so yummy and lemony! The service here was great too, the service was quick and the waiter was very attentive. I have to say that the final bill was so much cheaper than anywhere else we had been in Amalfi/Capri/Sorrento that week! A three course meal and a bottle of wine came to just over 60 Euros! Amazing! Most places would easily be over 100 Euros and that was when we had shared a started and dessert! If you're ever in the area do pop by this place, lovely atmosphere, good food and good value for money! (Plus a cat, if you're into that kinda thing!) I'd give this place zero stars if I could. JuT arrived in Sorrento after having great food in Orvieto, Florence and Ischia. Had decent expectation. This place was set up by our travel agent who I am now having serious issues with. If you look at the reviews that are good, they are at least 2 years old. Maybe the food has gotten worse. I had a chicken, steak and sausage combo that wasn't edible. A few bites and now, I still feel sick. Octopus appetizer smelled terrible. Sent that back as well. What makes this place terrible is that they not only made us pay for this crap, they didn't even offer (or ask) what they could do to make it up. Had an amazing meal with a group of five while traveling in the area. My husband and I stayed at a nearby hotel, and our friends stayed at an Air BnB in the area. It was perfect walking/meeting distance for our group in the Sant'Agnello area. We arrived without a reservation around 8 and were seated promptly without any issues. We ordered a bottle of the house red wine (why would you choose anything else in Italy, it's going to be good), and the burratta and prosciutto for the table. We got entrees rolling and we were all very happy with our meals. Three of us had the crab linguini which was actually served in an empty crab shell, one had a steak, and my husband chose the gnocchi. All of us were very happy with our meal choices, and everything was cooked to order, tasted fresh, and very filling yet we didn't leave feeling stuffed. This is a great choice if you're in the area. Friendly staff, much more reasonably priced than downtown Sorrento, and felt more like a neighborhood spot than one that was overrun with tourists. If we are back in the area, we will return! read more

Went with my daughter last night. Unpretentious humble and caring family restaurant. Best mozzarella/buratto we have had in Italy. Fish dinner was excellent, homemade ravioli was excellent. Very unassuming. Out of the tourist route. Quaint atmosphere where the food gets all the attention. Maitre'd and hostess are the lovely well informed owners. BEST MEAL WE ATE IN SORENTO. I ate swordfish rolls, risotto with Sorento citrus(worthy of a trip to Italy just to eat) and beef filet with peppercorn gravy. My mate had homemade pasta with sausage and mushroom. Good find while staying close by. Seafood risotto and a cod dish were good but not spectacular. Interestingly, the shellfish were very light on meat content for being so close to the sea. I've had mussels in Naples as big as a spoon--really no excuse for minuscule clams and mussels. Green salad was just plain lettuce with zero dressing (for 2 euros). Brown bread was filling but no butter offered. Spousal unit was just ok with her cod dish. Service outstanding and prompt. Local wine was totally fine for the price. Do not miss this hidden jewel. We were staying in the Hotel Mediterraneo in Sorrento Italy and looking for something within walking distance for dinner. Restorante Moonlight was a quick 5 minute walk away. My wife had tuna tartar and I had grilled octopus (a favorite as it is caught locally). Both were delish especially the octopus which was extremely tender. For a main my wife had linguine with crabmeat and cherry tomatoes, and I had scialatielli with porcini sausage and provolone cheese. Bothe were superb. We were trading dishes the entire evening. For desert my wife had the small cake with lemon cream and I had a traditional tiramisu. Again, wonderful. This is a small family owned establishment. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and treated us tourists like we were locals. It was a wonderful experience. read more

Great little restaurant off the main streets. Well worth the extra time it might take to get there. We were in town for seven nights and had diner there twice. Spotless, polite service with an extensive menu. Both times the owner came to our table to welcome us, thanking us for selecting the restaurant and explain the menu and specials. First night was a side of octopus and tuna tartar for my wife and a pasta seafood dish for me. Excellent flavor and taste. Second night was fresh mozzarella for an appetizer. My husband and I were on our honeymoon when we came to this restaurant. We have been to 5 different cities and several restaurants all through Italy ranging from Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples and lastly Sorrento. This was by far the best restaurant we had gone too during our entire 3 week tour through Italy. We stumbled upon it since it was close to our hotel and we went back several times for lunch and dinner during our 5 day stay in Sorrento. I could taste the difference of homemade authentic Italian food especially since I grew up eating it my whole life (mom from northern Italy). The staff was excellent and very attentive. Bruschetta is on the house and you really can't choose a bad dish. We ate something different every time and were not disappointed. It is a family friendly restaurant but great for honeymooners like ourselves. The house wine was fantastic and the bruschetta was my favorite, after trying bruschetta at every restaurant we ate at during our Italian tour. Unfortunately this is a huge tourist trap. I don't usually write negative reviews, but given the other reviews of this place I feel like that I must warn others. We read some good reviews, and being very afraid to end up in a tourist trap we tried this place, unfortunately that is exactly where we ended up. The place was packed with Americans, I don't think that we saw a single Italian there. The bread that they gave us was very stale, we could not even eat it. The house wine was ok but very expensive, only option was for a full bottle or for a glass, no half or quarter liter options like at most other places. But, the real disappointments were the main courses. The pasta was just something that could have came out of a box. It was edible, and maybe it would be three stars in another country, but in Italy, where we had delicious food day after day, coming to this place on our second week of traveling was very disappointing. We also tried the fish, and again, it was plain, and honestly, very cheap, something similar to fast food. I am giving it 2 starts for the service. The hosts very welcoming and nice. We could tell that they were swarmed with tourists and that they were doing their best to be inviting and nice. Unfortunately, I must advise to avoid this restaurant if you want anything that resembles authentic Italian food. read more

We were very happy at moonlight. We are traveling with an infant so we were looking for a comfortable location with good food and service. This was exactly that. The decor was pleasant, as was the staff. Food was excellent i highly recommend the grilled octopus and the pizza. The amaretto tartufo for desert was one of the best things i ever tasted.
