Needed coffee early this morning and wanted to support a local spot. Most coffee shops don't open in the downtown Durham area until 8am due to covid-19, but they were open here for outdoor takeout service. The menu was on the door and the signage for instructions was clearly posted. When I drove up Kyle greeted me and he was a total angel! He was wearing a mask and kept a good distance. He was so nice and helped me through the process. I called in with my order, paid over the phone and in minutes my hot latte was ready to go! It tasted fresh. This is the place I go and get breakfast before heading out to work. There's parking available on the side but if there's no parking spaces available you can park on the road. Usually it's quite busy for breakfast with a line. They have delicious breakfast options including caffeinated beverages, pastries, and donuts. I ordered 2 dozens to take to work on a Friday and they were very fresh. We ordered the Banh Mi bagel sandwich and the lox bagel as well with a soy latte. I'm in love! I actually happened to try this place because, I was in town with my best friend and she highly recommended that we stop. As a matter of fact, when ever she comes through Durham, she said that she always stops (if they're open) and I see why! The food is deliciously awesome! I lived in Boston and now live in the DMV area, and I love spots like this where the food is fresh and really good! It tasted like a flavor explosion in my mouth! Oh my gosh, the sweet with the savory sour buttery taste was amazing! The chicken breast was perfect, the garlic aioli was delicious, the biscuit was buttery and perfect, and homemade pickles set the sandwich off! I was living my best life on cloud nine after eating that sandwich! Alls of the flavors were complimentary to each other, it just worked! I loved it! Next, I had the Cinnamon Brioche (fabulous), the coffee cake (it was just a coffee cake, I mean it is what it is), and Strawberry Lavender. Now, I have to give it to straight and let you know, at first I wasn't feeling the Strawberry Lavender donut. Why you ask? Well, let me tell you, LOL! It tasted like lavender essential oils. But, wait! I kept eating and the taste grew on me. So, you get this nice chewy donut and then you taste the sweet, next the strawberry, and finally the lavender comes in and finishes off the flavor trip! It literally had a calming effect on me! This place is called Monuts, which means you come here and must get donuts. I don't care what other people say about their biscuit sandwich and such, you get donuts when you come to Monuts. In my opinion save the biscuit calories for Rise! Their donut flavors each day change, and every time I come here I am overwhelmed with joy and happiness by the different combination of flavors that Monuts provides each day--from cider cinnamon, to frosting flavors you have never heard of, nuts, sprinkles, things baked into the batter. Mmmmmm And their breakfast food or lunch overall is pretty solid. This place isn't giant inside so at peak hours you should be prepared to wait for a table, and they try and help out by not letting you grab a table until you have ordered which I appreciate. The parking lot is also small and awkward to park in and leave from in general, so I always prefer the street. But great sandwiches and salads but their soups are something I would not pass up either at lunch. But don't forget your donuts! read more

We also decided to split a few of the seasonal donuts (apple cider and red velvet) which were AWESOME! I have to say that their donuts are consistently the best I have had in Durham. The drip coffee comes with one refill and there's plenty of seating, so it's a good place to come eat and drink coffee for a while. Monuts is famous for its freshly made donuts which they make at 5 am everyday and usually sold out very quickly. I love their donuts simply because each donut gives me very different taste. We ordered strawberry shortcake donuts and strawberry jelly donuts. The shortcake donut is soft, creamy, and rich. I even taste bacon in it. In contrast, the jelly donut is chewy and juicy. However, their brunch is not that good compared to the donuts. Pretty "exotic"(Turkish eggs, turmeric milk, etc) but not delicious. To sum up, I would recommend for its vibe and donuts. I wasn't sure what to do when I initially walked in and felt a little out of place amongst regulars. However the nice guy at the register shared the 'how tos' with me and hand held me through the process. I ordered a Cheddar Poblano Quiche slice, chicken potato corn chowder and a blueberry almond slivered donut. Although I like my quiche a little firmer, it was quite yummy - loved the Poblano pepper touch. Finally got back here for a brunch/breakfast with my family, and wasn't disappointed. I don't like their doughnuts as much as Rise, so I hadn't made it back here in some time. However, they have a great spot here, offering a very diverse menu and offerings of baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, and other delicious foods. The quiche is can't-miss, and you can't go wrong pairing it with soup or salad. Also, they have a great beer selection and Counter Culture coffee as well. My only food-related gripe is that the only vegetarian substitution they allow is avocado in place of meat. Being able to sub egg would be much appreciated! The line can be long on weekends, and even if the place is mostly empty the acoustics are such that you have to talk loudly to be heard. All the donuts are spectacular but the bagels and sandwiches are the best part. I could go on for awhile about their focaccia (make sure to pick some up when they offer day old bread at the front counter and heat it up at home with some oil/ however you like) which makes a great base for my current jam, "apple of my eye". Monuts outdoes themselves every time I go (and I am a regular). I cannot for the life of me understand why they don't have 5-star reviews all around except for the fact that the people of NC want gourmet doughnuts at Krispy Kreme prices, which is completely unreasonable. Inventive flavors and a constantly-changing rotation are the main reasons why I keep coming back (but don't worry--they always have plain glazed and apple cider as main stays). Some unique flavors include candied ginger coconut, matcha coconut, and chocolate caramel pecan. Check the menu before you go so you aren't having to decide while you wait (and you might have to wait a LONG time on weekend mornings). You would be truly missing out if you didn't get a breakfast sandwich while you are their. Their biscuits are the best I've ever had (yes, EVER). Tender, buttery, perfectly salted. Their biscuits are amazing. They are large and super buttery. Their home fries are perfectly balanced and taste delicious.
