I have been to Monuts several times and love the local feel of dining there. There aren't that many service interactions as a lot of it is serve yourself after you order at the counter. This most recent visit I was disappointed compared to past visits due to the extended wait time for our food even though it wasn't as busy as I've seen it in the past. The bagel sandwich I ordered also was quite small for the price point and the bagels were over toasted to the point it was unpleasant to eat. I love Monuts overall but can see it has some inconsistencies over across different visits.

We had not been here in a long time since whenever we're nearby the place is packed. Finally stopped in on a Saturday in March when it was not mobbed (maybe spring break at Duke?). We've gotten donuts and coffee in the past but this time got a quiche with a side salad and a cheesy kale scone. Both were delicious. It's fast casual so you order at the counter and they bring out your food. We also like that they pay good wages and have a little section with pantry items and merch. This has become a Durham institution and we wish them continued success.

    Turkish eggs and avocado sandwich

Turkish avocado eggs sandwich always slaps, but also got the lemon ginger curd pie and it was delish. The puff pastry crust was a little weird but the filling was so good that I didn't even mind! This place gets packed so I would recommend either ordering ahead or expecting a wait. Service is friendly and this is a no tip establishment. Ambiance is very cute!

Monuts is perfect for coffee, sweets, and lunch! I stopped here for an afternoon and sat outside on the picnic tables. The outdoor area is gorgeous and perfect to study or catch up with friends. The food and drinks were great! The staff was helpful and friendly. I was just visiting Durham but could definitely see myself coming here regularly if I was a local. Every person I met in Durham recommended Monuts and it did not disappoint!

Apple cider and chocolate peppermint donuts

We picked up donuts for breakfast for my daughter's birthday. I appreciate that they open at 7 so that we could get them before school. I loved the seasonal flavors of apple cider and chocolate peppermint. The donuts are the right balance of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The biscuit sandwich took some time to get ready, but the biscuit was worth it - delicious and flaky. The seasonal coffees of eggnog and Christmas tree lattes were also tasty.

Omg what an amazing eggnog donut! Serious yums!! I thoroughly enjoyed all of my food as well as the chill atmosphere. The cashier took the extra step to ask if I wanted my focaccia heated, what a sweetie!

If you're in need of a sweet treat this place has got you covered! They've got donuts, muffins, cookies and even breakfast sandwiches. I'd recommend getting here 15-20min before they open because the line gets LONG!! There's plenty of seating inside but parking is definitely sparse so come early :).

I never would have guessed that I'd have the best bagel of my life during a spontaneous lunch trip but that is indeed what happened today at Monuts. There were a lot of menu options that sounded good but I couldn't decide what to get / panicked and ended up ordered a plain bagel with egg whites but it was A M A Z I N G!! The bagel had perfect taste and texture, I can only imagine how good their other varieties are. Bonus points for having delicious vegan cookies, almond milk, lots of indoor and outdoor seating, and the sweetest employees ever!! Already looking forward to coming back here.

Ordered donuts and the breakfast burrito and everything was absolutely amazing! I'm super picky about breakfast burritos and they nailed it! Didn't get a picture of it because I devoured it super quickly since it was so good lol.

I was very pleased with Monuts. Based on the name, for a long time had I assumed they served donuts. But they don't! (or at least not much). On a beautiful May morning the indoors was pretty packed but I saw signs about how to get to their outdoor garden (which is just around from the front door). I said I'll do that (and they text you to come pick up your order inside). Well the many picnic benches were a little damp, but it was quite lovely! And so was my interesting spicy egg bagel sandwich.

Monuts is an absolute gem in Old West Durham! The cafe is a perfect destination for breakfast, brunch, and lunch; and you can feel good supporting a local business that pays their employees a living wage! The food at Monuts is incredible with a focus on delicious baked goods, inventive sandwiches, and fantastic coffee drinks. Their menu changes on a seasonal and sometimes weekly basis, so it's easy to keep coming back to see what their current offerings are. In addition to sandwiches, you can also enjoy lunch items such as soup, salads, and quiche! Everything is made from scratch, in-house, no pre-made mixes here. if you're visiting on the weekend, come early and be prepared for the crowd, this place gets packed!

Received a dozen donuts as a gift at work and WOW they were delicious. The variability in flavors is truly unique and the donuts taste fresh.

Great lemon poppy seed donut!! The place was very busy on a Saturday morning, it's more than a donut place as they serve a full breakfast as well

    Ask the Community - Monuts

Are they open for dine in right now?

Not yet, you can order and wait inside for your food but the tables have messages of no seating until they feel it's safe enough.

    Do they have wifi?

    Yes

What kind of vegan baked goods items are offered?

They recently started having at least one vegan baked item Yesterday I had a delicious vegan chocolate chip cookie. Probably the best in town.

    Any vegan donuts yet?

I hope they can work on some soon! I had one that they made for the Bull City Vegan Challenge one year and it needed a lot of improvements.

    Can you study here?

It can get pretty loud in there during peak hours. If you can catch the place when it's not too busy I'd say it would be a nice place to sit and study.

They have the standard types of donuts (glazed, chocolate frosted, vanilla frosted, strawberry frosted, fritters, filled, etc.) Most of the filled donuts are filled to order as you can choose from different types of custard or fillings (Bavarian, white, strawberry, etc.) The donuts are fairly good and for the most part pretty good the only issue is that they run out pretty early. The apple fritters here are massive. They aren't the greatest (I prefer a more crispy outside and doughy inside with lots of apples) but the size alone makes it worth it. The only problem is they sell out really fast so if you're not there before a certain time you'll be SOL. I haven't tried the savory breakfast options but they do look fairly good. The service can range from good to not so great as sometimes you do feel ignored or you feel like you're troubling the staff be being there. I like how they have a retro Street Fighter 2 arcade inside that you can play for free. There is seating inside and a few tables outside. I would go more often but if I can't get there before say 8a - 9a I probably wouldn't bother.

I know they make their pastries fresh every day but on a busy Saturday at 10:30 am, the eclair dough didn't taste fresh and was not as light and airy as I hoped. Cream puff was ok. It's got a happy vibe. Second, I like the footprint of the store. You can see the whole process from beginning to end. Third, the shop owner and employees were incredible nice and helpful. Now the negatives. This is a franchise. Because of that, the owners have to live and die by the equipment that they are required to use. And that is most of the problem here. The donuts are unremarkable. While I really do appreciate that the base of the donuts are cake mix, the fryers are woefully inadequate to cook the donuts properly. It's almost as if the oil temperature is too low to give the donuts a nice crispy exterior. The result is a slightly soggy, undercooked donut that falls apart when you handle it. It should be firm enough to support the toppings and actually make it to your mouth without falling apart. Next is the topping issue. The syrupy topping is put on top of the already soggy donut and the whole thing becomes a sticky mess when you try to pick it up and it falls apart. The last thing is the menu. I do enjoy the variety of toppings that they offer. But the menu picture suggests that they have vanilla and chocolate cake donuts, so I order one donut that I believed to be a chocolate cake base and it wasn't. I watched the cooking process and there were only vanilla cake donuts being made. So not getting what is advertised is a big negative. With all that said, I want this little shop to succeed and I hope that they take the necessary steps to tweak their process without getting in trouble with the franchiser. But if they don't change soon, I fear for their future. They seem like very nice people who deserve to succeed!
