VIP Tires & Service

Our 2013 Honda was making weird noises, braking unevenly. VIP diagnosed the problem, replaced the…read morebrake calipers. They also noticed that its tires were 9 years old with rubber starting to break down. It was an expensive visit to the garage, but all the expenses were listed and I compared with industry averages and VIP charged reasonable prices. This is an efficient and ethical shop that does good work.

My car broke down in an unfamiliar neighborhood, and AAA offered 3 options of places to tow it to…read more I picked VIP because it was the closest to my home. I regret that decision now! I spent a fortune to have my serpentine belt and tensioner replaced + the $250 baseline fee for diagnostics. Mechanic friends told me that I was way overcharged for the serpentine belt and tensioner, and that unless it was completely fried, that was probably not what caused my car to die in the first place. VIP then they told me that I needed my radiator replaced and that it was leaking coolant so badly that if I drove the car anywhere farther than the grocery store, the coolant could all leak out and the engine would seize up. They could fix it all for $1700 more, but they couldn't get to it for another couple of days. Meanwhile, I had to drive to my mom's house 350 miles away for a family emergency, so I opted to not get the radiator. When I drove the car home (~2 miles), I checked the coolant and there was none in the reservoir (VIP said they had topped it off). I talked to a mechanic friend, and he said there was no way that much coolant could leak out in a 2-mile trip-- just buy a jug of it, fill it up, and check it along the way on the 350 mile trip. I did that. When I arrived at my destination, the coolant level had barely budged. That seemed a little sketchy, but then... I took the car to my family's favorite repair place. They said the radiator was fine, and nothing was leaking; it just needed a new hose connector and for $50 I was good to go. They also said $1700 was an insane price for a radiator replacement. So good. Dodged that bullet. BUT THEN... I took my cat to the emergency room a couple days later and when attempting to leave, the car was dead. Completely dead-- when you turned the key, nothing. No lights, no clicking, absolutely nothing. My cat and I took an Uber home, and the next day I had a mechanic friend drop me off at my dead car. He looked at it and found that when VIP had replaced the battery (I am pretty sure I didn't need a new battery as my old one was only about a year old), they hadn't tightened down any of the screws, so it shook itself loose and disconnected. We tightened the screws (they were so loose we could have removed them by hand with no issues), and it's been fine ever since. So, TL;DR: 1. They said they had topped off the coolant when they had not. 2. They replaced the battery when they didn't need to, 3. They didn't tighten down the battery housing, causing my car to unexpectedly die. 4. They attepted to scare me into thinking I needed a part that they were going to overcharge me for. 5. The part they did fix was probably not the cause of my original problem. So yeah, I do not recommend this place.

I wish I could give you more than five stars…read more.... I went to a local shop, Eastland Motors, this week to get an inspection sticker. The mechanic told me that my car didn't pass, due to brake issues. He offered to access the brakes and fix any problems. They put a rejection sticker on my windshield. Since this effort could potentially be an expensive effort and I didn't know the place, I was reluctant. But the owner assured me that they would do a good job. So I made an appointment for the next day. Still has reservations about them doing the work. My neighbor suggested reading any Yelp reviews before moving forward. I did this and was shocked at all the bad reviews. Told them in person the next day that I couldn't do business with them, due to the bad reviews, and drove away before the mechanic could respond. Made an appointment with Direct Tire in Watertown, who I had been going to for about 30 years. They are great! Susan, the representative, looked up my car in Carfax, She found that my brake and rotors had been replaced in early June of last year by Parkway Toyota. I bought the car from them a few weeks later. They gave me a loaner car, too. Thank you, Susan and Godfrey, and thank you, Direct Tire and Parkway Toyota for being so honest!! This is why I have gone to Direct Tire for so long.
