Me and my boyfriend have been coming here since we moved to the area... and normally it's good but this last time we went.. unless you were buying shots or a big party they didn't pay you no attention! Me and my wife came here on a Sunday. It was one of those Zippity Doo Dah days. First thing I noticed the menu and sticker shock! I've been to other locations in the past and it seems like this is the highest I've ever seen the prices even for the lunch specials during the week. I mean $5 for a cup of soup? Anyway, having said that the food is still good and the service is still great! I don't know how Mexican restaurants do it they always seem to have the freshest Coke. The only complaint I have about Monterey is the quality of the meat doesn't look as fresh as other Mexican restaurants. It's almost of the Taco Bell variety which is pretty bad. Stopped in for dinner after a long drive from a business and met my wife here. Haven't been here in a long time and wanted to try it again. We were very surprised how high the prices have gone. We decided to order anyway and I got the Fajita Quesadilla for $15. When it was delivered to the table, it was soooo small and barely any fajita meat on it. Our family usually stops by Monterrey to grab a bite with friends on Friday evenings. We have found it to be a great way to cap off a long week and ease into the weekend. The spot is easy to get to with ample parking in a large strip mall parking lot. We usually arrive around 6:30, and we have not had to wait for a table (although the restaurant fills considerably while we are there). We typically have 7 in our party, and the restaurant is large enough to accommodate several larger parties of that size. Chips, salsa, and queso are all great starters with the warning that it is easy to fill up on them. Proceed with caution. My husband and I are fans of the fajitas. We recently ordered the chicken fajitas for two and were overwhelmed with the portion size. That being said - we Put. It. Down. We cleared the plate! The fajitas were a great option. They also have a kid's menu with several options for kids. In our experience, service has always been quick and friendly. I am sure we will be back when we are in the area. read more

I went here for lunch today. I have been going here for 17 years. I sat outside. Same guy has waited on my for years. After 20 minutes I finally got my food. No cutlery. No napkins. He finally brought me a napkin. I had to use the spoon that came with the dish because again no cutlery. He brought out the bill. I waited 30 minutes for him to pick up the payment. Went inside to pay.. I told the young lady at the counter that if they sit someone outside they need to wait on them. She ignored me. I said did you hear me? The pen didn't write , I said can you please do your job? She said it wasn't her job.. NO TIP I will never ever go back here again. I have never been so disrespected at a resaurant in my life. I came here last weekend and I had an awful experience. My sisters and I asked to sit outside due to the somewhat crowded restaurant. When we were seated the tables did not look clean and the server took a while to come to our table. We decided to order our drinks, tacos, & queso. This was the WORST Mexican experience that I've ever had. Ordered chicken nachos, beef nachos and carne asada tacos. What I received was chips, large chucks of boiled , flavorless chicken and ground meat and cheese. No lettuce,tomato, cilantro, pico de Gallo. Also the tacos were literally just meat and a tortilla. No cheese or lettuce! When I called, I was told that you have to ask for special nachos. That's crazy!!!!! What in the world?The bill was 31+ dollars and the manager offered me a 15.00 credit. TL:DR-pretty standard Americanized Mexican food that misses on some of the basics. Better options in the area. Like others have said, this is a pretty standard Americanized Mexican restaurant. The other dishes on the menu seem overpriced for what you get compared to other restaurants in the area. Tacos-nothing special. Nothing wrong with them. They're cheap. Burritos-smaller than many nearby restaurants for the same price. Chimichanga-disappointingly soggy, not at all crisp. Fajitas-good, pretty normal imo. Chips-depends, I think they save the previous day's chips. If you show up early in the lunch hour they may taste dry and a bit burnt. For me, chips are a basic and it should be impossible to mess it up. Lunch specials-careful when you order. There are options (sort of listed as included?) that can cost $1-$2 extra. Today I ordered steak fajitas. They came out to the table without a plate or tortillas. They sat on the cast-iron for a while. The onions were burnt, and the beef had a strange, unpleasant flavor. I returned them right away. They gave me a burrito with the same meat. I took one bite of that and return it as well. The waitress said she would take both off the bill. Instead, the manager still charged $10. When I asked what was going on, he accused me of doing this on purpose in order to get free food. "You order one thing, you eat half, we give you a different dish, you eat half, you look for a free food. I charge you $10." For Americanized Mexican food at lunch, this is my spot. I almost always get the nachos and they are completely covered in queso. They have some great $5.50 lunch specials too. Best standard mexican restaurant in the area. I really love Chile Rellenos made with real Poblanos or Hatch chiles. I will always order them on one of the first couple times I try a place. Not a big fan of the food here. We took a risk and came here sans our usual Mexican spot and left disappointed. It was mainly the food taste that let us down. The people and service were good, but the food lacked flavor and was very bland, which is hard to do in my opinion with Mexican food. Even the salsa tasted like it was from a jar.
