In a lot of ways this really is "just your typical Mexican restaurant". But what makes it stand out to me and the reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3, is that it has an awesome fully covered patio. And on said patio there is plenty of seating. I prefer high tops and love that they have several out there. They also have fans and TVs. It is an absolutely fantastic place to hang out, eat some food, drink a beer and chill. The food and service really didn't stand out. They were "fine". I had several various kinds of tacos. They have beer on tap but it's not a particularly robust selection. But in these respects there is nothing that would really distinguish it from anywhere else. The real winner is the atmosphere generated by the patio. I've been going to the various Monterreys locations for over 20 years and I've never had anything there I didn't like. My new favorite go to is the Pollo Santa Fe. First time here, nice spacious restaurant with a bar. Service was efficient/good. My friend had the lunch portion steak fajita as and said the steak with good. I had the vegetarian plate which included a cheese quesadilla, bean burrito and bean tostada (called the chalupa in the south)....i am used to the Mexican food in the southwest so this food is quite different for me. Free chips and salsa but requested a hot salsa, the waiter brought ed and green hot salsa....which had the nice boost I was looking for! Two Vegan Friendly lunch items I chose this location as they could sit a group of 30 together for lunch. Beans and flour tortillas contain no animal products. Ordered the veggie fajitas with no cheese, no sour cream and a bean taco for Taco Tuesday. Staff was great, they immediately started taking beverage orders as people came in. Everyone enjoyed the chips and salsa. Unfortunately, they brought mine with cheese on top so it had to be returned to the kitchen, but most other orders were correct. This restaurant has a moth infestation, moths flying all around the booths for months now. That means larvae is infested in the restaurant around the tables and it's disgusting, if you don't know about it, google pantry moths and see what and how nasty it can be. Honestly this Monterrey's has really gone downhill. Starting with the service. The cashier seemed to have his mind elsewhere and I noticed alot of the workers were wearing masks but not gloves. It made me truly feel like this place was definitely unsanitary and didn't seem to take it seriously When we got the food both my mom and her godchild said that the street tacos I purchased were absolutely disgusting and didn't have any taste whatsover. Honestly I've experienced better at other mexican restaurants and this one isn't one of them. I don't recommend coming to this Monterrey's. The place felt authentically Mexican. Music was good. We were seated quickly. The food was so good. I got a shrimp quesadilla. It was small but when I put the queso on top I knew I had to ge time to go. My nephew got the nachos. He said they were great and they filled the plate. They definitely didn't skimp there. My husband got the chicken street tacos and the steak street tacos. He said the steak one was tough but the chicken one was much better. The food was filling too. Only thing is our waiter kind of disappeared. Never really available. We had to get up and ask someone else to refill our drink. Maybe he's just new to it all. He just wasn't very attentive. While picking up my food was easy enough, it literally had no flavor! The beef was not seasoned at all....tasted like didn't even have salt! The taco's were soggy in the 10 min it took to get from there to the house. (Fed the shells to the dog because I sure wasn't going to eat them.) The server did not speak English or was just being passive-aggressive with me. I ordered simple ala carte entrees of a burrito and tacos with a side of dip with nachos. She would not even answer in Spanish when I asked her about the menu. The food was very salty and the chips were burned and very dark. My husband's quesadilla had almost no cheese on it. I'm not sure why the ratings are so low for this place. We drive by it often and the parking lot is always full. That propelled us to want to go - plus we like good Mexican food. It didn't disappoint. The waiter was at our table taking our order within three minutes of us sitting down - great sign. My wife had a veggie burrito and I had the burrito grande with a side of rice and beans. The veggies on (and inside) our burritos were fresh and the taste was excellent. Such a fantastic experience! I was part of a group of 30 people. We were seated outside on the patio to enjoy Taco Twosday(2/22/22) and National Margarita day. Our wait staff were attentive and when we told them that one person was missing her meal, it was promptly attended to and magically appeared. During a quest for Mexican food; I decided to visit this restaurant. I must say that although I've visited the Monterrey's in North Augusta quite a few times; this was a totally different experience. The environment was festive but not crazy. The food is exactly what is described in the menus. Very flavorful and well prepared. The service was second to none. The staff makes every patron feel welcomed and special. They make sure that you're comfortable and satisfied w/ everything but they make sure not to hover or annoy. What could have been a bad experience ended up being wonderful thanks to our server Megan! We walked in around 2:30pm on a Friday and the place was almost full. Before sitting at a booth (that we picked) we noticed the $3 house margarita special. We sat down and had questions about the margaritas....BUT there was a STRONG communication barrier between us and 2 servers (even the manager). Megan came over and explained the drink options and was very knowledgeable. We ordered 2 "fresh" margaritas (skinny) instead of the premixed, nachos, and a chicken dish with spinach/veggies covered in cheese. Everything was delicious and truthfully we didn't even get to the second dish because we shared the nachos and were full! $39 for two entrees, drinks, and great service was worth the price! Ok... I'm must be having de javu. Having just eaten at Pablanos the day before I could have sworn that this was the same place. Their menu are exactly the same, they even have the same exact sign saying that you can get black beans instead of refried beans. I will say that the salsa compared to Pablanos was heads above. It had the right amount of spice...I almost filled up on chips it was so good. The cheese dip is exactly the same...so. I ordered the taco salad, and I gotta say a little disappointed, and it was more expensive than Pablanos. Overall I guess it was okay, but having to choose between the two i'd rather have Pablanos. I just wasn't really blown away by this place. But, I guess you could give it a try...otherwise drive less than a mile down the road to Pablanos and literally get the same exact thing for less...literally. read more
