Like my favorite song, I have this restaurant on repeat. I'm a sucker for good Americanized Mexican food. Super fast service, freshly made food, and giant margaritas. It's hard to be sad with a marg and endless chips and salsa. I go between chimichanga and the enchiladas, both of which are classic. I might like the chimichanga a little more because of the queso. Buyer beware: TLDR the waiter here was incredibly rude and almost stole my card. Would NOT recommend. While the food and ambience were ok, our server made our experience superlatively bad. My wife made an order and he came back to confirm the order. The wrong order still came out, and we asked for it to be corrected. This would not be an issue (mistakes happen), but the waiter proceeded to deliberately ignore us afterwards. We did not receive any refills, napkins (we did not receive any and had to use baby wipes that we brought), or any other check-in after this. After we were clearly done (cleaned the table, stacked plates, etc.), we did not receive the check until we stopped our waiter and asked for it. This whole time he was incredibly attentive to other tables in our section but avoided us. The major issue is that the waiter did not return the card with the check. We were leaving with a baby, a backpack, and a box of leftovers so I did not notice the missing card until we got to the car. I had to return and ask for the card back from the staff. The host staff member had to go search in the back and get the card from the waiter. Fortunately it did not (and hopefully will not) escalate into a larger issue. I normally wouldn't consider this an issue (again, mistakes happen) but after our treatment here it seemed incredibly deliberate. I would not come back here. I honestly don't know why anyone does. We were seated relatively fast and provided chips pretty quick. The salsa is very bland. I ordered the street tacos and they were lacking some serious flavor. The corn tortillas tasted stale and like they tried to soak them in oil or something. I asked for cheese and limes and my tacos were cold by the time I got what I asked for. They had no horchata. I won't eat at a Mexican restaurant again with no horchata. I can definitely say this is the best mexican restaurant in this part of Augusta. Honestly of all the Monterrey locations, this one and the North Augusta location are the best ones. Never encountered many problems or issues whatsoever and I can say their food is just as amazing as their service is. Also got to sit in the back away from the crowd for a party of 8 which was nice. However the waiter seemed very confused when asked about margaritas. Every Mexican restaurant I've been to has a drink menu and a full list of margaritas. Here it was more so "we only have one house margarita pre made" which made me automatically cancel my order for one. Especially because he seemed to have a hard time describing if that meant the margaritas were from a package or made by the restaurant at the beginning of the day to serve all day. Additionally, when asked about the flavors he couldn't even give an answer except "you name the flavor and I'll see if we have it." You either do or don't. No one wants to play "guess what flavor margaritas we have." My entire group had to ask for utensils and were told "they'll come out after all the food is on the table." So we're supposed to starve while others are waiting for their food? Especially when this restaurant gives a lot of food! Which is probably the only plus. Now I have tried this restaurant twice so far, recommended so I figured I give it a try. #1. The first time I tried them out they were busy. Since this wasn't my worse Mexican I figured I'll give them another try one day. #2. Found out the online menu and prices are incorrect. Lunch special #6 quesadillas, rice and cheese sauce for $5.25. Not only does it show the item and price they don't honor the price. That should've been my clue to leave. It was $3.00 more than the listed price . Thank god I always check my food before going home. There were items missing, my Speedy Gonzalez and chips. I didn't find out until I got home. Alright amigos welcome to the ball park so I Get here order a Dos Equis lager and they bring out a Dos Equis amber.. strike one but I'm okay w it bc I pretty much like all beer. Anyways here comes an up and in fastball for strike two. I order Texas rice w no shrimp and it comes out with no steak but loads of shrimp 0-2 count not looking good for the home team. Anyways food was good once they got it right so props for that. Anyway the last pitch is coming it's a belt high fastball again.... No way they miss this one. My ole pops orders a half/ half sweet tea y'all know what that is right ? Half sweet half unsweet tea. The man has ordered it for years... Clean, friendly and Mexican! Before I rave about the food, let me give FIVE STARS for bathroom cleanliness! And lots of booths to seat large groups or smaller for 4 or fewer. Mexican music not overly loud is pleasant. Tile floors, interior windows rather than walls adds a sense of spaciousness. Guacamole dip deliciousness with just a touch of added flavor, to enhancee rather than overpowering the avocados. Margarita made from scratch and delightful! $3.00 is a good value! Having a fun girls weekend and needed some Mexican food! We were seated right away and our server provided great service. The food was tasty - started off with some yummy cheese dip!! Oh yes!!! Who doesn't love cheese dip??? :) Unfortunately, their frozen daiquiri machine was down. Bummer!!!!!! Big Bummer!!! I've been on a hunt to find the perfect shrimp taco with grilled pineapple/mango toppings to trump the wonderfully great tacos I had in Miami FL. I decided to come to Monterrey's to give their tacos a shot and I am EVER SOOOOO GLAD that I did! The service was slow, but nice. When we sat down, no one brought us menus. I think the "salsa" they served us was not home made and it was frozen at the top and we were only given two bowls for four people. The food itself was sub par-lacking in taste/flavor/seasonings but not presentation. The meals all came out hot and fresh. The waitress and manager were friendly and got us refills and silverware when asked. When I asked about menus I was asked if I'd ever eaten Mexican food before because the menus are the same at every Mexican restaurant. I have written a few reviews in my life but after the amount of stress and annoyance caused by my experience here I needed to say something. Other than the server being such a sweetheart, the other employees were rude and didn't acknowledge me or anyone at my table. One of the servers, Marcela, was drinking on the job while serving other tables. She didn't help me with what was needed which were extra napkins and utensils; she was very rude and seemed to not want to be there but when it came to drinking with who seemed to be her boyfriend she was ready. On top of that, the food was such a disappointment, I ordered some tacos and 80% of it was fat and not meat. I can't express my dissatisfaction enough. 1 out of 5 stars. read more

The street tacos are fine but there are better options in both quality and price for tacos while the other mainstay items have seemingly gotten worse in quality and taste. Clean, well lit, a little on the noisy side - which isn't a bad thing seeing that it was packed with happy customers. I had the La Macarena for One. They gave me enough food for 3 people. lol Most would take portion size into account when reviewing, but honestly I'm too poor to turn down a pile of extra food. The fajitas were great, served on a sizzling plate with fresh tortillas and sides. My husband had the cheese burrito, and said it was great. I thought it sounded tacky, but it actually looked pretty good. Brother in law ordered from the combination menu, so I have no idea what he got. lol My mother in law got the spinach enchilada, and she loved it. Solid mexican food here. If you're craving that California feel, Monterrey has it in abundance. Oh, and the chips and salsa are BOTTOMLESS. Which is just.... so awesome. I love it when restaurants are generous like that. The servers were attentive, and there are t.v.s on the wall to grab your attention if the conversation dies. All in all, I would go back to try another one of their specialty menu items since the fajitas were delicious.
