There was so much hype for this place and i really don't know why. I was hoping to support local businesses and fall in love with this place like lots of people were saying on yelp but it was not what i expected. The first impression of the place was kind of grungy. It wasn't the cleanest looking building. Wait staff was very friendly and attentive which was about the only thing i liked here. Food: it was nothing special for mexican food. You first get served chips and salsas which the chips were stale. Then we ordered the "steak" empanadas which werent your normal empanadas with normal steak, it just didnt seem right to me and didn't taste that good. Then our meals were off too. Stay away from the taco salad. Lettuce was wilted from the hot chicken; it didn't have rice or beans as a bottom layer, and the dressing should NOT be French.... the restaurant needs to make a simple cilantro lime vinaigrette. The black bean soup didn't have much flavor, it was ok when I added some salt. My husband didn't mind his burrito. The ground beef they use tastes ok so maybe if I went back I'd get something with that. Next time I will drive a few extra minutes to Salsas in Southington. read more

1.) Just to warm you up (with Chili and Habaneros): I was in the area, and decided on a whim to try anything that was family friendly. This place was rated highly by Yelpers. I figured "eh, what the heck!" So I went on in........minus the sombrero and mariachi band. 2.) What your eyes may see: Yes!!!! What a hole in the wall! At first, when I entered through one of their side doors, I was welcomed by an 8 year old girl and a pool table. Kind of reminded me of a friend's house. A little dark in there, but after seeing the Yelp stars and the appearance of the place I was already believing the hype. There is a thing about me and Hole-In-The-Walls. I feel places like that really say "eff the looks, it's all about the food!" So I dove right in. 3.) Food: I ordered the Chips and salsa. They gave me a side of salsa and a side of that wonderful green sauce that I underestimated, which was Avocado and Jalapeño. Nice and spicy! Delicioso! Then I ordered the Acapulco burrito which was made with pork and served with a side of refried beans and rice. I used that green sauce to put on my burrito. Oh man were all of these items good! The pork was juicy, sweet, the flour burrito was moist, the refried beans and rice melted in my mouth, and everything was served temperature hot! 4.) Staff: Alejandra was a cutie and very sweet and attentive, running the bar and serving tables. Her sister came around towards the end of the meal, and introduced herself. I love family owned restaurants! It's good to know that they were like Archie Bunker...................All In The Family. 5.) Came here from Florida and really wanted some good Mexican! After reading all the good reviews I had to come. I pulled into the parking lot and thought wtf ..not cute kinda looks sketchy. But it's actually nice and very clean inside. That being said, the chips and salsa was great but the food was awful! :( I ordered the burrito (chicken and steak)which came with rice and beans and They actually gave me beef instead of steak, both burritos has very soggy tortillas and the beef had a mushy consistency and kind of tasted like corn beef wth! The chicken was just disgusting it was soo salty and barely had any meat in it I only had a bite of it and threw everything away I'm so pissed !! Go to Puerto Villarta it's a gorgeous restaurant and you can get the same thing for the same price but it's actually good food no soggy mess! read more

The enchilada literally just had 2 small slices of chicken breast. Nothing else inside. I'm floored. The rice was absolutely flavorless and the beans were like water. After a day at a brewery, we needed some food for the drive home. This place was dead on a Sunday afternoon, which was great for us. With chips and salsa on the table, we dug into the menu - they have an entire page for tequila! I opted for the enchiladas - one beef, one chicken, one pork. They were good, if not a little altered since I only had one type of sauce on all three. Very basic, standard, good enchiladas. They were good about bringing me mugs of hot water, and while I didn't get to try any, the spinach quesadilla across from me looked pretty good as well. Fantastic Mexican food! It's the best that I've had in Connecticut and even in Las Vegas. Definitely a hidden gem tucked away in Bristol. The food was delicious and seasoned well. Ok - I hate doing this... service was awful. Waited 10 minutes for a table. Then asked for a white sangria three times. Finally went to the bar to get a water. Service was so slow, we were served by 2 waitresses and the bartender. Nothing was consistent.The food was bland. We weren't offered dessert! Delicious Food. Terrible Service. I had 3 different waitresses serve me and my guest during our visit at Monterrey's and all 3 of them were seriously slacking customer service. Our original waitress was great at first, but was chatty with other tables and neglected us. One of the waitresses that handed us our food replied, "oh, i don't know" when asked which one of the orders it was she was handing me and said it quite snarky. One of the worst food delivery experiences ever. It all went in the trash. Tacos weren't assembled, and what was allegedly the ground beef FILLING for the tacos was in a separate container, was watery, and did NOT taste like any ground beef I've ever eaten. The tamal was dry, hard as a hockey puck, and without flavor. It was not the traditional size or shape and didn't come wrapped in a corn husk as is the traditional, authentic way to cook and serve tamales. Empanadas were inedible. Tres enchilada's meat filling wasn't cut to manageable, bite sized pieces. Beans and rice were cold. Queso was gluey and tasted processed, not fresh. I'm not huge into Mexican, but all my friends seem to be, so I eat Mexican often in the area. Monterrey has really good fresh salsa and they also serve this spicy green avocado type dip with the chips as well, which is a nice change to salsa. I usually get a burrito or some sort or something with shrimp and veggies. The staff is very nice and welcoming, service is always good and the margaritas come in all different flavors, so don't forget the margaritas! read more

I read another review on here; a lady sent her CHIPS back because they weren't warm?!? REALLY? LOL, who cares? The chips in the store aren't warm; do you warm them before you serve them at home? I doubt it....just thought that was a weird thing to focus on. They just remodeled and have Mariachi singers who just add to the new look and atmosphere. This restaurant has the BEST margaritas on the Planet! They should be served in a larger glass, LOL. They greet you with chips salsa and this green avocado/ jalapeno sauce, so delicious! I was in the mood for Mexican, and this place had very high ratings, so I was excited to try it. Boy, was I disappointed. My girlfriend and I went on a Sunday afternoon. The place doesn't look too great from the outside, but it was nice enough inside. Chips and salsa were fine, however the rest of the meal definitely left something to be desired. I ordered tacos with chicken and Mole sauce. Just about every Mexican place I have been to uses shredded chicken. Here, however, it was really just fried cubes of chicken. My girlfriend ordered some sort of taco salad and was surprised to see it served with FRENCH DRESSING (I'm told something with chipotle in it would have been much more appropriate). Neither of us were crazy about our meals, and my girlfriend ate less than half and didn't want it wrapped (which is very rare for her). Both of us left with queasy stomachs as well. To summarize, I'm not sure why this place is so highly rated- perhaps it is because it is in Bristol, and people are not used to actual good restaurants. Don't get your hopes up! read more

We love this place!!! My whole family has been going here since they opened...it has been consistently wonderful. The food is fresh...they will cook to order. The atmosphere is casual...comfortable...and the family that are there are extremely friendly and helpful. Went there on a Saturday night a half a hour before they closed. Didn't matter the service was good and the food was good. We ordered 2 apps to make things easy. We had the empanadas and nachos. Everything was hot and tasty. The green sour cream sauce (not sure what it is called) was crazy good! Had a little spice to it and I liked it. We had to drink 2 beers and 2 of there yummy mango shakes! I should have only had one but I couldn't help myself. Solid food for price and service was good also. My dish of chicken mole was good, came with rice, black beans, and guacamole, but the chicken was dry and tough. I would like to believe it was a fluke. I ordered a side of guacamole which was good but the salad was something I could have made myself, much fresher. Yes, it's a hole in the wall, but by the reviews, I, at the very least expected the chips to come out HOT. I expected the salad to have maybe some beans & rice. I MIGHT give them another chance, but truly have to think about it!!! I could spend my limited cash better by making a meal like this myself. Bad. Placed an order with grub hub and it was never delivered. 2 hours later i called the restuarant and they didn't pick up. Called grub hub, they called the restuarant, and they didn't pick up for them either. If they couldn't fulfill the order they could have called or texted me or grub hub. Really awful business. I wish i could have tried the food but i won't be doing business again. Grub hub handled it well and gave me a credit and i ordered from a different restuarant and had a good meal. Hope this restuarant will inform the customer or grub hub next time instead of letting this get out of control (2 hours after order placed is crazy, and i live less than a mile away from the restuarant so there's no excuse here and the food was never marked as ready so this was not a delivery issue but a restuarant issue). read more
