The service was excellent so that wasn't an issue. It was not too rushed but we also didn't wait too long for food and our server was very. Ice. It also seems like they spruced up the restaurant a bit and it looks really nice in there now. What I didn't like about my last trip is that instead of the chips and salsa they usually give you in the beginning, they switched it to four dry, bake tortillas (?) that tasted kind of similarly to cardboard. We had to order chips and salsa separately. I also got the pollo asada burrito and it was okay but not the best. It wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked it to be. I still love this restaurant and will try again but I think that instead of just working on the look of the building, they should try to work more on their food too. read more

Horrible customer service here. Try other places in the area. Me and my husband came here, were seated, the waiter brought us water and some dry tortillas with salsa and we ordered a starter.... We sat for 20 minutes and not once did the waiter return to check on us or take our order for the entree. We never got the starter either. Each time he passed we tried getting his attention, crickets, he would walk the opposite direction. Avoid this place at all cost. The seats were dusty and the window seals had dust bunnies and webs. The greatest thing about my experience was the server! He was absolutely phenomenal. He was so attentive and friendly and very helpful and honestly made my night better because the food was just mediocre. To start they offered complimentary tortilla crackers with a salsa. The salsa was more like a sauce, very thick. We ordered a ceviche in a cup that was presented beautifully but also was in a thicker textured "sauce". For my main course I ordered the fajitas with steak, chicken and shrimp. The portion size for 30$ was not what I expected because I only had 4 pieces of shrimp. It was also very greasy. Let me start by saying , we used to love this place. Fun atmosphere, great staff, good attention to detail. Probably been going 21 location or another for close to twenty years. But, thier chips and salsa now come with some sort of fried circle bread. I literally don't know what to call it that is how not chips and salsa it is. I literally don't know what to call it. Bring back the old chips, the triangle corn chips. Noone wants to deal with what seems to be over cooked flower tortillas you made by mistake. Came here on a Saturday evening. It was busy but we were seated as soon as we walked it ( because it was just 2 of us). We sat at a table in the bar. It was fine , just a little loud. We ordered drinks a Guava Margarita for me and Santiago Special for hubby. Both we're very good. Chips(need salt) and salsa is very good. We also got a favorite of ours Cocktail de Camarones ( Mexican shrimp cocktail (warm), the broth is amazing. We both ordered Molé dishes. Love their Molé. I had a nice red wine with dinner, it wasn't clear what type of red it was but I think it may have been a Tempranillo. Anyway our server Carlos was a sweetheart! Very kind and attentive. My brother and his girlfriend got me out of the house. I'm so glad I said yes. Puerto Vallarta really surprised me. We walked in and instantly the decorated host station looked ornate. We were seated quickly, made our drink orders. I messed up. I ordered the jumbo guava margarita. I messed up because this drink is HUGE! Taste and quality wise, outstanding. Tajin salted rim was a game changer! It was so much that I needed a to go cup. The food.... Oh my goodness. The chips and salsa were fresh and the queso was phenomenal. I ordered the California combo with a shredded beef (birria) filling and a cheese tamal. The food came FAST and was hot. As soon as I took the first bite of the tamal, I forgot why I was having a bad day (maybe with some assistance from the margarita). I had to take the burrito to go, the portions were plentiful and filling. But for the important part. The service. Our server was Miguel, and he was without question top tier. He made sure we were set with things but wasn't annoying at all. He was exceptional! We made sure to give him an above and beyond tip for being above and beyond. We went there last evening for a birthday party. We had a large group but the staff handled us all with the utmost professionalism. We were comfortable, well served, and never rushed. The group ordered a lot of food and everyone got it quickly, hot and just as ordered. I ordered the Carnitas Burrito. I was served with refried beans, and rice and covered with hot melty cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. The flavor was spot on, the burrito was stuffed with meat and veggies. I did not walk out hungry and most of the group walked out with a to-go container or two. I can't say enough about the staff. They were very friendly and accommodating. It was a Monday and since Salsa was closed, we decided to go to Puerto Vallarta for lunch. We were greeted by a friendly hostess. Within seconds of sitting down another friendly person brought us chips and salsa. I forgot how delicious their chips are. I had the mole de pollo which was very good. It came with rice and refried beans. The lunch portion was so big that I had to bring half of it home. My son liked his ground beef tacos and let me have his refried beans. My husband liked his shredded beef tacos. Service was great. I know there are many restaurants to choose from on Queen Street but this is a fun place with nice people working there and many yummy things to choose from. You will not be disappointed. read more

What happened to this place? We went tonight and are still trying to figure out what happened to this place. The staff is typically friendly and pleasant and the did is generally good, but the guest experience has gone off a cliff. We arrived around 6PM on a Saturday. NOT busy and got seated quickly. Our server arrived fairly quickly and we asked for only water to start while we looked at the menu. It took almost ten minutes for the server to return with water and to take our order. Our water glasses were MAYBE four ounces in size with about three ice cubes. They left a bottle of room temperature tap water. After our order was in, they brought some sort of miniature tortilla that was quick heard on a grill (and burnt) with salsa. What happened to the tortilla chips? When we asked the server to remove the plate we didn't order, he offered "regular chips" and brought us the smallest basket of chips ever. Service was excessively slow for the remainder of the meal as our server was never around. We had to wait another extended period while our leftovers were packed. The ONE thing our server didn't force on us was to use their device to "pay at the table" and instead left us a printed bill. We have normally enjoyed visiting this location but it appears to have been "updated" to operate like major generic restaurant chains and had completely lost touch with treating customers like they matter. read more

We've been here a dozen times and it's been fine, but tonight I ordered an enchilada and tamale. I specifically stated that I have a peanut allergy, and NOT to use mole sauce or any other sauce with peanut. "Of course! No peanut! No worries!" Then I had an allergic reaction, rushed over to Shop Rite next door, spent the next hour eating Benadryl and chugging milk, and hating life. My family now had no car and - after paying the bill (I was shocked they had charged us) - walked over because I could not drive. This is the first time in 15 years I've had a problem eating out due to my allergy, and I often eat out for Mexican, Thai, and Vietnamese where peanut is a concern. I'm especially angry because they had been informed before the meal started AND acknowledged that there was no peanut. Shame. read more

Health conscious?? All well and good, but the "new" Puerto Vallarta falls flat, and I don't plan on returning unless they return to the menu (and free chips and salsa) they had before the "genius" behind the bland fried flour tortillas ruined the dining experience. We always have a fantastic time here!! Their mole enchiladas are unbelievably good, I have dreams about them. My dining partner usually orders the chicken fajitas which are equally as fantastic. Portions are HUGE - expect to take home leftovers. Prices are amazing for the amount of food you get. Service is always friendly and helpful, I have never had bad service here in the dozens of times I've visited. The place is decorated like any other Mexican restaurant you'd find in New England, with murals and sugar skulls everywhere. Margaritas are okay, the flavored ones are not my favorite: too sweet and not strong enough. The food and service more than makes up for it. I love coming here! read more

It was just me and him- so I probably messed up bringing him here versus chili's. I had the taquitos Lindos appetizer (small tortillas rolled with chicken or shredded beef, lettuce, tomato, guacamole, sour cream, and ranchero cheese), my son got a beef taco and we got a California quesadilla with chicken to go for my daughter. First and foremost, the service is always great...that being said.... We go to Puerto Vallarta for what they are known for, large portions of delicious Mexican food preceded by a basket of tortilla chips and salsa to enjoy with our margaritas while waiting for our food to arrive. However, today was different. I believe we stepped through a portal into an alternate dimension with a vastly different version of Puerto Vallarta. Now perhaps the Southington Puerto is different than the Newington one which is typically where we go, but this is not what we've experienced in the past. Tonight we were seated by a delightful hostess and greeted by a pleasant server. Then...things got weird. We found placed on the table before us was a large round white dish containing three round baked...well I don't know what they were. They were kinda pita like but without the taste. I mean without taste. They didn't taste like anything. Apparently they are just vessels for the salsa in the bowl on the plate. Then there was a brown smear on the plate. Can't tell you what it was or what it tasted liked because it was so thinly spread my husband couldn't collect enough on the vessel to taste it. As we sat discussing what we were supposed to do with the contents of the plate in front of us, I heard a brave soul behind me questioning the server on the whereabouts of the traditional chips. Perhaps these folks had followed us through the portal and have too found themselves in this alternate dimension Puerto Vallarta. Then the margaritas! We ordered two medium house margaritas on the rocks with salt. Our usuals. No need to see a menu for that. We ordered mediums at the suggestion of the server. This would lead one to believe there are at least three sizes, but not in this alternate dimension! As delicious as the margaritas may have been, we were shocked when the bill arrived and we learned that medium was the larger of two sizes at $19 each! Now when it comes to food, my husband is a card carrying member of The Clean Plate Club. When it comes to Mexican food, he's like a goldfish and will continue to eat as long as you put the food in front of him. Our typical Puerto Vallarta experience consists of him cleaning his plate, then cleaning half my plate which I couldn't finish. Then I have to go out to the car and get the wheelbarrow to get him out of there. However in this alternate dimension my husband could've worn skinny jeans and no need for the wheelbarrow! He ordered the Enchiladas de Mole Poblano. They used to come with three enchiladas completely covered in the mole sauce. Now you get two enchiladas and he ran dry on the sauce. He says the taste was good, but just a smaller, less satisfying portion at the same price. $18 I ordered a combination plate with two tacos. It also came with rice and refried beans. The tacos were good but the shells were cold. I ate both my tacos but fearing my husband would spiral into a depression if he didn't get more Mexican food, I graciously surrendered my plate of rice and refined beans over to him. I resorted to my margarita and his for my caloric intake. No issue with the staff or atmosphere but at $78 plus tip for two margaritas and two entrees, we shouldn't be standing in the parking lot considering if we should play Frogger across the street to the BBQ place! read more

So disappointing. This was our go-to Mexican spot but they changed the menu to something unrecognizable. No more tortilla chips. Instead, they are using a poorly flavored "crisp" and only give you a few. It was inedible. They also removed the vast majority of the food choices. What they replaced them with is a totally different style of food. No longer finding our favorites, we ordered burritos. Inside of each, it was full of rice and beans. We only found about five small bits of meat in each one. The ingredients were also lower quality than they used to have. Cheese was not melted. I asked for cheese queso and they forgot. I asked again and they gave me a dry crumble instead. Not worth the high prices. Also, the waiter told us they add gratuities ahead of time for the "back of house", so if we wanted to give a tip to the waiter we'd have to give more when we settled our bill. (See other reviews here for similar info.) We ended up doing that because the waiter was great and it wasn't his fault that this restaurant is choosing to run itself into the group. Whatever owners took over ruined the place. Now we need to look for a new Mexican spot. I was so sad I could cry. Also, our booth was dirty. Goodbye Puerto Vallarta. :( read more

The food is regular normal with rice and beans, only they surprisedly cooked the skirt steak to medium rare for Mexican restaurants. However they charged a mandatory 20% tip calculate with the subtotal and taxes, meaning that's 21.5% tips, for party of 2 without telling tips included. For us without knowing, we added more tips. It's so not right for restaurants mandatory tag on this outrageous amount of tips to the customer. For this kind of restaurant practice, I would not recommend or suggest to anyone to come to this place. read more

FRESH and Delicious! They made our guacamole with two avocados at our table. The Spicy Margarita was excellent- good mix of flavors, not too spicy, just right! Fajita Quesadilla was filled with green peppers, onions, tomatoes, grilled chicken, and cheese - very tasty with pico de gallo and guacamole. Chicken Enchilada filled with lots of chicken and cheese. The plate came with beans and rice. Our Server was personable and checked on us several times. This restaurant is great for families and friends - lots of tables, great Mexican music. Not pleased with the changes to this Puerto Vallarta location, and I really hope the others do not follow suit. This used to be, for a very longtime, my go to place with friends and family. Literally have been going there for years, since they opened. On my most recent visit a couple of weeks ago- there were some changes. Candles on tables- alright, whatever. However - no chips and salsa. Some awful flat tortilla thing. When asked for chips and salsa- were told I have to buy queso. That's- a thing. The chips and salsa, as silly as it may be, was a highlight of this restaurant. So, yeah. Friend and I ordered our usual house margarita. Didn't get the large, cause i don't like the ice melting. Expected normal sized margarita- instead, came this drink, not strong, in literally what looked like ( and was the same size as) a kids juice glass. And it was like- a mix or something?! Not at all the same high quality margarita. It was gone in about 3 sips. The dinners- left a lot to be desired. They are smaller and the variety on the menus isn't there anymore. However- the bill. It was literally double what we paid before. If not double, significantly more, especially on the awful drinks. And the chips that we now have to buy- and btw did not get refilled, or offered to get refilled. The drinks I think are the same price if not slightly more, for literally half of the margarita you used to get. Then they made me pay with that machine. No thanks. I gave my card to the waiter, saying I do t want to use the machine, and he literally still used the machine standing there. When asked about the security of these machines, he didn't seem to know what I was talking about. Honestly- I am sad to say we will not be returning, after going for about 20 years to a place that we always enjoyed. There's a place further down the street that has been around longer, we will go there next time. I hope they go back to the way they were - but I doubt it.
