"Smoky Paloma" & "Spicy Tropical Margarita" - Cheers!
    Linda K.

Midtown East isn't generally known for trendy eateries, in fact certain Yelpers have gone so far as to deem the area "a sterile corporate wasteland." Well Monterey certainly defies that stereotype with its gorgeous Art Deco decor, friendly attentive service and inventive steak-forward menu. Walking into the beautiful space with its curved bar, pink walls, blue banquettes and dim lighting, I felt beamed back into the glitzy Manhattan days of yore. (Just think James Bond meets Miami Vice and you'll get the idea). To really enhance the old-school vibes, there's not one but three tableside carts for tableside preparations and service - one each for prime rib, flaming desserts and martinis. We went with their signature $75 three course prime rib price fixe (available on Fridays and Saturdays), which gives you a choice of ceasar salad or smoked salmon appetizer, prime rib with fries or potato puree, and dessert. I started with the Smoky Paloma cocktail, a tasty and refreshing concoction although a little light on the mezcal. Caesar salad starter was a copious portion, very tasty and swimming with fresh anchovies. Prime rib carved tableside was tender and juicy, although I would ask them to lighten up on the salt next time. Potato puree was absolutely divine, so creamy that I'm salivating just thinking about it! Lime cream cloud cake dessert was light and lovely. Partner said his dark chocolate tart was fantastic too. Despite Monterey's glitzy decor, I saw a nice mix of couples, family gatherings and friends enjoying themselves on a Saturday evening. No pretentious snarky vibes, just a very pleasant experience overall.

I've been wanting to try out this restaurant, because the name is the place I grew up in: Monterey (in California). The interior was stunning, classy, and spacious with fancy lights, white table cloths, cream color scheme with colorful accents, and full bar. My plan was to order the classic dish, Steak Frites, but the Berkshire Pork Shank intrigued me. This was served with cabbage, roasted apple, along with a nice crispy element on top. I think it would have been better with something more substantial, such as roasted potatoes and carrots. The Pork Shank itself was an impressive size with a fair amount of meat, but a lot of it was bone. The Pork was wonderfully succulent and full of bold flavor from the tasty, savory smoked pork sauce. The apples brought a bright, fresh, sweet element to the meal. Cabbage was just okay. I was able to try the Steak Frites, which I really enjoyed. The Steak was slightly charred, tender, and well seasoned. Fries were steak cut, delightfully crispy and hearty. My friend and I shared dessert of Peanut Butter Chocolate Mousse with ice cream. I found this to be disappointingly small with barely any peanut butter taste. The chocolate mousse was rich, smooth and yummy though. Service was solid. Our waiter was welcoming, knowledgeable about the menu, and accommodating. Prices are on the expensive side. I would be open to returning, but not for a while.

Little corporate spot-- very pretty interior. Wish the food had a bit more flavor, but still very delicious (we're just suckers for adding some hot sauce) The lamb was perfectly cooked and the special of soft crab was a nice little warm up! Cheers!

The waiter was very attentive, and the space itself is beautiful. Most of what we ordered was very good, with one major exception. We started with the onion bread, which was delicious. The prawns were very good as well, though I wish they weren't quite as spicy. We also enjoyed the meatballs and the steak frites--the steak itself was good, but the sauce was a bit too mustard-forward for my taste. Unfortunately, the chicken dish was a big disappointment. We specifically asked the waiter beforehand if it was made with chicken breast and were told it was, but it turned out to be mostly dark meat. It came in large, thick chunks in a sauce that made it taste even worse. When it was put on our table it didn't even look appetizing. My husband and I took one bite and couldn't continue eating it. I really regret not sending it back, especially since we barely touched it and it wasn't what was described to us. To end on a positive note, the cheesecake was excellent and definitely a highlight.

Monterey is a steakhouse but has something for everyone - including vegetarians! The restaurant is clean, classy, and beautiful. To drink, I loved the Bittersweet Citrus Spritz (very similar to an aperol spritz) which is featured on the menu at their sister restaurant, Acadia (also a huge fan). To eat, the Comte Onion Bread is a must. The Truffle Lasagna is a delicious vegetarian option, I would have loved to have had more of that yummy truffle sauce on it however. For dessert, the Chocolate Soufflé should not be missed. The Bananas Foster is also tasty, but I think it's a bit overpriced for what you get. Overall, very tasty!

Had a wonderful Holiday Lunch here. The food (see pics) was very well prepared and VERY flavorful! The service was the star for sure. Interior...superb, bright, cheerful, cozy. Go early and often.

Had dinner on a weeknight here and was unimpressed. The restaurant has an art deco vibe. It was very warm inside since they had the main doors onto 50th street wide open. Our server was inattentive and it took forever to get drinks; when she did pour my rose, it was the weakest pour ever for $18 (she poured it tableside). The spicy strawberry margarita was very heavy for a cocktail. Tried one and couldn't do another since it was so heavy & filling. The food was average at best. To start we shared the tuna tartare, fried calamari and a half dozen oysters. The calamari sauce is VERY spicy and the portion was small. The singular crouton that comes with the tuna tartare is so thin and tiny - while the tuna was good, the dish could have used another crostini with it. For mains, two of us had the filet and another had the steak frites. The portion of fries with the steak frites could have been more generous. They don't include any choice of sauce with the tenderloins which is a stingy move. From the sides, the creamed kale was delicious and the broccolini was good. The rosti potato was weird - would have been better it was served warmer. Ordered the bananas foster for dessert - taste was fine but also excessively overpriced for the portion size. The bathrooms are downstairs and weren't clean. I have no reason to come here again - slow service and average food.

I come here very often because it's very close to work and the ambience is great; nice high ceilings, nice decor, low mood lighting, and lots of seating. Usually get just drinks but have also gotten the food which has been very solid. Service takes a bit longer though because it does get quite busy later in the evening, but usually at 5-6pm it's not too busy!

Comte & Onion Bread, Chopped Salad, French Dip & Fries

Walked by many times on my way to work and finally had the chance to drop in and enjoy lunch. As soon as you walk in, you can tell this place is trendy and new; the space is beautiful - aesthetically pleasing with accents of gold. Started off our meal with a drink: coffee and a carrot juice (mocktail). Take note, free refills for coffee and alternate milk options are available. The carrot juice mocktail was well concocted - was tart (lemon or lime) and ginger-y. We ordered three things to share: comte & onion bread, chopped salad, and the french dip sandwich. DO NOT SKIP on the comte & onion bread. Although it is pricey ($18), it was the best thing we ordered - warm, pillow-y, garlic-y and onion-y, and cheesy. Paired wonderfully with the creme fraiche (and chives). The french dip was perfect to share. Stacked with enough beef and a generous portion of fries. The paired au jus was not necessary - the sandwich was juicy and moist. However, the au jus did give extra bit of flavor. The chopped salad was nothing special - just some greens to balance out the meal. All in all, beautiful spot with an amazing comte & onion bread. I would come again to order the bread and try out their cocktails & prime rib.

Worthy of my 1000th review, a stunning Deco vibe steakhouse upon entering. First thing you'll notice besides the energy is the lightness of the colors of the place. It's pastel seating makes it warm and vibrant. Great for business meetings, social gatherings or a date. Totally a vibe. First thing I noticed once seated, was the awesome Martini bar cart. The menu showcases a few pre-designed drinks or you can customize your own classic with perhaps a twist or a shake. The idea is to watch the Sommelier at work. Then there's the prime rib entree, also served table side -- wheeled over on a cart! It's quite a presentation...get that camera ready. The dome shaped lid unveils a beautiful prime rib roast, just waiting to be sliced. The server knows just how to plate it, some au jus is drizzled on and then served. The prime rib was perfect. Just the right amount of fat on the edges, prepared medium rare. It was a beauty. (Comes with a side of super creamy mashed potatoes and an even creamier whipped horseradish). That was heavenly as well. Other must try items, for starters, the balloon sesame lavash. It was very hot to the touch (be careful when ready to pull it apart to eat). It was like a thin flatbread but presented in this balloon shape. A hint of olive oil flavor paired with the sesame seeds and the carrot tahini spread - it was divine. Another appetizer I had was the Hokkaido scallop. I could never resist the raw bar if scallops are on the menu. Presented with daikon, chive oil, serrano chili and yuzu. Chef's Kiss. It was a beautifully balanced dish both in texture and flavor. My friend had the barbequed prawns for his appetizer. Goodness, the size of the plate and the prawns! It looked like a full entree. They were served over grits, New Orleans style. I couldn't try it due to my shrimp allergy but I can tell it did not disappoint. My friend thoroughly enjoyed his meal and he normally doesn't order any seafood that he needs to "work" with so minus removing the prawns head, it was worth the work. It was quite the sizeable appetizer and delicious I'm told. Another entree we must mention, the Iberico pork chop. I mean, what's there to say besides the name. It was a must try just because. Served with ginger cabbage and mushrooms, house bacon and a smoke pork sauce. What's not to love? The pork and mushrooms were excellent (I asked to try some). So juicy and so tender. My dining companion was celebrating his birthday so you know we had to order some dessert. Truth be told we were both quite content with our meals and our stomachs were at capacity. Between the food, before dinner cocktails, and wine throughout - I couldn't really eat another bite. In the spirit of his birthday, we chose something we could share. The ricotta beignets were delightful. Very light and airy with lemon curd. Surprisingly (and thankfully) they were not coated with powdered sugar. The cinnamon and vanilla sugar worked better as a topping. To our surprise, our server presented my friend with a complimentary slice of cake as well when she brought our dessert. Candle and all. It was nicely plated too. I believe the cake was the cloud cake (which is a strawberry layer cake). That was such a pleasant surprise - so sweet of the server to do that. She must've seen or heard me present him with the Birthday card and gift. Fun fact, if you order the bananas foster dessert, that is served on a cart as well! It is flambeed tableside too. The overall dining experience Monterey provides makes this place so welcoming. It's so lively and fun. Did I mention great for socializing? Even if you're not looking to dine here, drinks at the bar is reason enough to pay a visit. The bar counter and seating area is a whole scene by itself. There's pop music playing overhead throughout the restaurant , I think it sets the mood for a great night on the town. I highly recommend and look forward to returning.

Great all around restaurant. Would strongly recommend to anyone looking for a fancier place in the heart of midtown. Definitely caters to a business crowd, but still good for family or date dining. Servers were very polite and knowledgeable. There were also a lot. We had a table of 8 and it seemed like we had 3 waiters/servers. Interior lighting was great. Warm yellows everywhere. While it was lit at night, it was not too bright. On Friday and Saturday night they have a very good prime rib special - $65 for Caesar salad, prime rib, mash potatoes, broccoli rabe, and dessert. Very good value. I ordered this and was delighted. It is carved on a tableside cart. The rest of the table ordered the following: Comte bread - amazing with the chive butter Lavash - I didn't love this but others did. Not a huge lavash fan Another Caesar - came with anchovies Strip steak - very meaty and good quality but needed a little more flavor Monkfish - excellent but small. Amazing flavor Pork chop - excellently prepared BBQ Prawns - prawns were a little small. Flavor was very good tho. Quite saucey. Would go great with additional bread or toast Pan roasted salmon - I didn't try it, but people said it was good Crispy artichokes - insanely good Chocolate soufflé - very good. Not super rich. Could use a little more sugar Cloud cake - eh wouldn't order again Fries - perfect I ordered a vesper that was amazing. Unfortunately quite small tho. Wines were excellent and not egregiously priced for a midtown high class steakhouse. Would definitely come back. Loved it

We shared the lobster pasta entree. Tasted more like Mexican goulash. No Italian flavors to be found in the sauce. Never once did the nameless waiter stop and inquire about our meal. Ambiance: This place has a nice ambiance, definitely very "New York" -- dark (you can't see how dirty the floor is) and loud music (maybe too loud). We sat upstairs (we had a reservation) and of all the people on the top there was a party of 4 (us), a party of 8 (all dudes celebrating something) and the rest of the tables were on a DATE - which I thought was funny. Service: We were served by Ann-Marie who was so delightful. She was kind, super nice, and took the time to speak to us (which is basically how we figured out she wasn't a native New York City person). She gave us good food suggestions and we were very happy with our selection. Food: Here is what we ordered * Steak Frites: My two boys got the steak frites and I have to say the steak was awesome! I wouldn't get this if you are looking for taste. I had to put salt and pepper on it to make it have any semblance of taste. The buttermilk tenders is supposed to come with pickled shallots and marinated green beans. We didn't get the pickled shallots or the marinated green beans, which was a shame. The chicken tenders by themselves didn't have much flavor. It also is unfortunate paying $17 for what was considered a small plate and just getting the chicken tenders. The Asian-sesame wings were okay. Also, didn't have much flavor and weren't that impressive. There was also still hair on some of the pieces of chicken, so the chicken could have been cleaned better. The bread was fluffy and not dry, which I had seen previous reviews say before. Paired with the creamy truffle butter, it had a luxurious mouthfeel. My favorite was the pork chop (cognac, sweet prunes, bacon, rosemary) -- the sweet and soft texture of the prune was melted in my mouth like fat, and the pork was tender, with the rosemary also coming through. The vodka rigatoni was a skip, somewhat bland and one-note, we ended up putting some of the truffle butter and garlic aioli from the fries to make it more flavorful. This was especially in contrast with the spicy shrimp pasta which was much tastier. Honestly, it's probably in my top 3 bread experiences of my life. If you love truffle, butter, cheese, and basically everything good in life, please get this. It comes out slightly warm and is just incredible. I will probably dream about this bread. The French Dip was good, although it was a little too salty for me. If I get the chance to come back, I'd probably try one of their actual steaks instead. The pommes frites were super crispy, basically McDonald's fries but elevated. The Banana Split Sundae was so pretty. I loved how they placed all the little treats around the crevices/imprints of the dish (not sure how else to describe it ). It's huge, though, so definitely don't expect to finish it yourself. I'd recommend sharing it with 3+ people. I was also celebrating an anniversary, and they brought out a strawberry scoop for us. It tasted homemade and really fresh. I could actually see pieces of strawberry in it, which I loved. The restaurant is definitely on the pricier side, and getting a dinner reservation can be a struggle, but I'd absolutely go again if I got the chance. My only real complaint was that our waitress kept pushing us to order more, which got a little annoying, especially since we had already ordered quite a bit. Overall: expensive + difficult reservation, but absolutely worth trying. And please get the truffle monkey bread.

They have to let you in. I didn't have a reservation, but was seated immediately. Win! I really should've asked questions instead of going rogue. My intention was to do the lunch prix fixe menu. The menu on the table was a la carte. This did however work out better for me as I had limited time since I was catching a broadway show. Started with the olives then followed with the hot dogs and closed with the gem lettuce. They did come at different times. This gave me the perfect time to nibble slowly. The olives paired perfectly with the salad. The hot dogs were my favorite. The whole meal was perfectly balanced for me. Just have to mention how amazing the service was. No table had anything waiting to be taken away because there was always someone walking around. At one point, one of the guys clocked I had just finished drinking my water and within seconds he was at my table refilling my glass. I mean c'mon. Will took great care of me. He even suggested the dessert I ended up getting which was the peach cruller. I'm gonna try to come back to do the lunch tasting before I go back home to LA.

Bursting with flavor and the potatoes made for a nice variation of textures. Salmon with endive salad was also great. Salmon skin was cooked perfectly. Only thing I wasn't crazy about was the corn gelato. Just didn't taste like much and the peaches I found didn't really play well with the dish for me. Overall though, service was top notch and you can't beat the upscale vibe. Would definitely recommend this for restaurant week experiences if you're looking to get a fine dining taste at a reduced cost. Portions felt reasonable for the quality and left full (far from bursting, but definitely not hungry at all).

The hostess was welcoming, our waitress was friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, and the support staff kept everything running smoothly throughout the evening. We took several of our server's recommendations and were happy with every one. What we ordered: * Butter Service Garni * Dressed Big Rock Oysters * Yellowtail Crudo * Filet Mignon with Pommes Purée * Nutella Opéra Cake Everything was beautifully presented and full of flavor. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly, the pommes purée were rich and incredibly smooth, and the Nutella Opéra Cake was the perfect way to end the meal. The only thing I'd mention is that the restrooms are located down a fairly long flight of stairs. If you're wearing heels, have a stroller, or have mobility limitations, it's something to be aware of. Overall, this was a fantastic experience with excellent food, attentive service, and a beautiful atmosphere. I'd gladly return and would recommend Quality Bistro to anyone looking for an upscale French dining experience.

We started with the kale salad (although it seemed more like spinach than kale), and it was still fresh and delicious. The tomato burrata was outstanding--definitely a must-order! I had the steak frites, which was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. My husband ordered the French onion burger, and after trying a bite, I already know that's what I'll be ordering next time--it was incredible! The cocktails were made perfectly, and to finish, we shared the lemon ice cream cake. It was light, refreshing, and not overly sweet--the perfect ending to a great meal. Everything from the food to the drinks and exceptional service made this a wonderful dining experience. We had such a great time and can't wait to come back. Highly recommend!

Thanks to my fellow Yelpers, I was lead to this great spot for a late dinner and cocktails on a Friday night. The hostess was really friendly and quicky sat us at a two seater near the bar, which we appreciated. The ambiance was light and friendly and they even had a DJ playing all the good jams! I think I danced a bit, (definitely liquid courage). The DJ read the room and created a fun ambiance. The waitress came over a few minutes later and quickly took our drink and meal order. We ordered the Tuna Crispy Rice ( Yum), Guinness Wager Sliders (Nom Nom), Korean Chicken Boas (My Favorite!) and Carnitas Tacos.....I'm embarrassed to admit that we cleaned our plates like a couple of savages. Bartley Dunnes is a great choice to come solo, meet up with friends or come as a group of no more than 4, unless you make a reservation. They have a second floor that I unfortunately didn't get a chance to check out, so I can't write about that. However, I did see people coming and going straight up. I'll be back!

They have a great happy hour running from open until 8 PM, including $6 beers and $8 cocktails, which is a great deal for the area. ordered the Bartleys Spritz (Aperol Spritz) and a Tequila Mule. We sat at the bar, which runs about half the length of the space, and there were also plenty of tables throughout. The back section of the bar feels a bit separated from the main entrance area. There are some TVs throughout, and everything inside seemed fairly new and well maintained. It was not very crowded on a Tuesday early evening, so service was quick and the staff was very friendly. We did not order food this time, but everything coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled great. Overall, I would definitely recommend this spot for happy hour drinks in the MoMA/Midtown West area.
