I heard about Hugo and MLC Tree Service from their flyer they left on my garage door. I called for a quote for tree removal on a large pine and cleanup on 3 tall palm trees. Hugo came out and gave me a written estimate. No sales pitch or anything to make me uncomfortable. He showed up on time, was professional and best of all -- gave us a great quote that we were happy with. I left him a message saying I'd like to move ahead with the estimate and he scheduled me in for the following Monday. We have just had Hugo and his team leave our property and are very impressed with their work. These guys are pro's and do this every single day of their lives! Palms were taken care of within an hour and they quickly went to town on the large pine tree! A few short hours later, they were done and had our home looking exactly as it did before they arrived but with one big difference... no more pine tree and 3 clean palm trees! They used pulley's to drop heavy branches, put down tarps to catch mess and did a full once around our entire property with their blowers to ensure everything looks perfect. Hugo and his team do really great work. My wife and I got a few bids but ultimately you get what you pay for. Some clowns from Craigslist were almost as much and were really dis-organized in bidding, adding over 50% after first bid! Hugo and his team first did a stamped concrete redo where we had a underground gas pipe break and matched our other stamped concrete. Then we had a HUGE 56' retaining wall and fence project right after that was a ton of work! Since it was over 4' we were correctly informed by Hugo we would need to get a permit. One we got that, Hugo's team removed the rotten railroad ties & rebar, removed dirt, set blocks, poured new concrete, set rebar nicely in the concrete set blocks, and added a side fence redo as well. All said we are very pleased with Hugo as he is a great guy to work with, giving us options and cost difference along each step.it took 15+ days but now we are all set!!! If you have a concrete or retaining wall or fence project don't hesitate to call Hugo and get a quote. They arrived on time, completed the job in 2 hours in 100 degree weather. They also helped us by clearing a large pile of debris we had from previous clippings that they put into the wood chipper. We had Hugo out to trim multiple trees and bushes on our property. He came out ahead of time to provide a detailed estimate and was very professional and knowledgeable about the plants on our property. The day of work Hugo and his team arrived around 8, set up there equipment and got to work. They were much quieter than I expected and quick! DO NOT HIRE this company to do tree work- check out the photos I posted of the results. I made this hiring mistake and Hugo and his MLC crew did such poor work and incredible damage to my landscape that I dismissed him from the job. Here are some of the highlights of what went wrong: - One the first day of the job I came home from work to find that MLC had BUTCHERED one of the eucalyptus trees they had worked on. They were supposed to trim it, but instead entirely removed all of the branches so I was left with nothing but unsightly bare tree trunks. (Scroll through the photos on this site to see.) Hugo didn't proactively call to tell me he made a mistake or apologize. I had to call him to ask what happened and I got no apology or offer to discount the bill, but rather excuses. Hugo knew the mistake had been made, but when I pressed him about how it happened, the answer was "I don't know" and that the trees will grow back and look better in several months. Against my better judgment and because he already had $1,500 as a deposit, I asked Hugo to arrive at my home at 8 AM to discuss the issue and personally oversee the work of his crew so a similar issue wouldn't occur on the second day. - On the second morning Hugo didn't arrive at 8 AM to discuss the poor job from the day before, but showed up almost an hour late, which resulted in me arriving late to my own job. Again, Hugo continued to make excuses for the horrible work his crew had done. It wasn't the way I expected an owner of a business to repair a damaged customer relationship and a poorly done job. When I asked how he would compensate me for the damage, he offered an insufficient discount until I insisted that I wouldn't pay for the work he did on the tree he stripped bare of all branches. - On the second evening I arrived home to find poorly trimmed trees with ragged edges where it looked like the branches had been ripped vs. sawed off. The crew had also hacked up a roughly 15 foot shrub that was a focal point in my yard, completely removed a 5-6 foot mature butterfly bush, and another 5-6 foot mature butterfly bush was torn down to about 2 feet. They took zero care to protect the rest of my landscape and my yard looked significantly worse than before I hired MLC. Again, Hugo didn't call to inform me of the damage, I had to follow up with him to hear more of his excuses, which ultimately resulted in dismissing him from the job. - The crew also made zero effort to clean up after a day's work. I came home to find pitchforks lying tines up throughout the yard, trash strewn around from lunch, and a saw that was literally hanging from one of the trees. Hugo and his company are unaccountable, unprofessional, and do amateur quality work. He made my landscape look worse than before I hired him. Even my neighbors were commenting and asking questions about what happened to my trees. Do yourself a favor and hire a certified arborist (which MLC is not). It will save you time, money, and hassle. read more

I congratulated him and asked him if he still wanted to bid for the work. He said yes. I emailed him pictures and gave him the address again. He said he would get me and estimate. Surprise surprise! Montejo Landscape did a GREAT job with our backyard hillside. They were punctual, professional, and hard-working. They came out on a Sunday and worked from 8 am to almost 5 pm. They cleaned up our entire backyard - chopped down trees, removed stumps, trimmed bushes, leveled out the dirt, chopped up our hot tub, hauled away all of the limbs and junk, and did it all at a great price. I met with Chris Montejo whose company is named "Chris Montejo Landscaping." I needed a yard clean-up with lots of weeding and tree trimming, irrigation check-up, hedging, etc. I have a large yard. I asked if he is a licensed landscape contractor and he showed me a picture of a contractor's license card on his cell phone. But, as it turned out, the license belongs to his brother and the license is for "Montejo Landscape Construction." The company named "Chris Montejo Landscaping" is not licensed and what is worse AND misleading is that they have a big sign on the truck which shows License #122511 so it looks like they are properly licensed, but they are not. I did not learn this until the last day when I checked the license number 122511 on www.cslb.gov and it said the license #122511 does not exist. Chris Montejo runs a separate business but uses his brother's license #974598 which is for a different company named "Montejo Landscape Construction" and that company is not the company that I hired. These guys do NOT know how to trim trees. They ruined the monument large olive tree in the front yard on the first day, so I stopped them from trimming any more of my olive trees. They cut all the main branches off at the top. I had spend 5 years trimming that tree into a beautiful shape and in an hour they demolished the tree. Throughout the 3-day job I had to provide constant direction because his workers are not skilled in landscaping. They can pull weeds but they do not know how to trim plants properly. Their truck leaked oil on the driveway pavers. I was very, very disappointed that Chris Montejo does not actually have a valid contractor's license because I did ask and he told me he was licensed. The work they performed as UNlicensed landscape contractors was expensive and averaged $40/hour. I cannot recommend these guys. I didn't even have a chance to read some of the other negative YELP reviews because of the confusion regarding "Montejo" and which company was really doing the work and who is licensed. Although, Montejo Landscape Construction did not perform the work at my home, their family members are being allowed to use this company's contractor's license. We presented Hugo with a monster challenge, in the form of an enormous pine tree. All the growth was on one side, bending the tree to a near right-angle over our house. When the tree started to lean, we started to worry. I knew things were NOT good. A few services came over and immediately started whining about the difficulty of the job, and sprouted off insane prices, in verbal quotes only. Then Hugo stepped in. BY FAR the most professional service. By far the best price. And I can now say, BY FAR the craziest skills! His crew tackled that tree like professional lumberjacks. In an area that had merely 4 feet of space between house and fence, they didn't so much as damage a slat, I held my breath as they worked over our house, and only one or 2 branches softly scraped. (My hubby is rougher, sweeping leaves off the roof!). They were amazing. Tree down to base level, area completely cleaned. They were so good that our neighbors were asking for their card! We can't say enough positive things about this company. Absolutely awesome. read more

They seem to be having issues with figuring out billing, still. I thought the issue was that the business changed owners but it has been long enough and they are out of control. We received a bill for May; then a bill for May and June; and now a bill for May, June, and July. We will be cancelling their service tomorrow. read more

Very disappointed in the job Montejo did in installing a drip sprinkler system in my yard. it was expensive and they did not stake down the lines and did not install a pressure regulator. Without the pressure regulator, the small caps keep popping off of the drip heads. Several call backs failed to resolve my concerns. I would not recommend this company. read more

I had a up and down experience with this company. Some good some bad let's start with the good. The team works together well. Good guys work hard. My neighbor and I were having a fence in common being built. At completion of the project all of the mortar, rocks, decorative white rock from my neighbors planter was mixed in with all the new planting soil i was planning on planting. When I called i left a message that i wanted it handled or i was going to notify yelp. Hugo replied "are you trying to threaten me, that's not the way we do business. If you would just called we could talk about it". I apologized "i didn't mean to sound like a threat, it was a promise and i was trying to give you a heads up, a chance to make it right". He said he would be over about 2-3 in the afternoon. Closer to 4:00 Hugo did show up with his faithful crew, and to his credit cleaned up the debris and gave me some helpful hints on how to transplant some bushes. (side notes- they ran out of right length nails so they used longer nails that extended through the boards then cut them off with a grinder making circular marks on the wood. Not on all the boards just one section.) I prefer not having to argue my point with a company in order to get what i deem proper service. I consider 5 star service "yes sir, we will be over there asap to handle that, will today work for you?" All in all I feel the good out weighed the not so good. read more
